At times seems like a mediocre student film, but has its moments
cherold2 June 2015
After watching the first episode, I'm on the fence about Powers. At times it is absolutely dreadful, coming across as a low-budget student film. There are two tedious expository speeches that give information, and in one of them, a newscast, we are told that people aren't sure if they can trust the main character but it's inexplicable why. Often something happens not because it seems organic to the situation but because it's that clichéd thing that always happens. Some scenes seem pointless, like one involving a deck of cards.

At the same time, there are some intriguing moments. The "Wannabe" is an interesting character, and the scene in the bowels of the prison has a genuine tension to it.

Most of the worst of the episode is in the first half, and I almost gave up on it before finishing, but by the end of the episode I'm feeling like it might be worth watching one more. Although I'm not that optimistic.

Read the Comic

I will admit I am pretty bias. I love the comic. Its wonderful. This is a terrible rehash of some of the comics most amazing moments. It hurts to watch them unfold in what has been made to look like a CW style melodrama. Sharto Copley is usually great, he seems uncomfortable in this role. They have reduced Christian Walker into a cop cliché. The acting is all around bad. I really dread what might become of some of the other more memorable moments. I was very excited this show was being made, this is a huge letdown. I hope it gets better, but I implore you to check out the comic whether you like this show or hate it, you'll see that this show does no justice to how great the comic can be.
