Johnny Depp's controversial exit as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 sparked major backlash and legal battles, leading to recasting with Mads Mikkelsen. Despite the criticism, Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 received positive reviews, overshadowing Johnny Depp's performance. Warner Bros. faced challenges with the franchise after Depp's departure, as recasting Grindelwald didn't lead to a significant box office boost.
Johnny Depp was recast as the Gellert Grindelwald actor for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and the decision was controversial and headline-grabbing for multiple reasons. Depp's Grindelwald was first introduced at the end of 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them before the actor went on to star in the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Since then, a combination of controversy and poor box office returns for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore ended the franchise after just three movies.

The Fantastic Beasts franchise includes three movies, with Secrets of Dumbledore potentially being the last installment. The prequel series connects closely with the Harry Potter franchise, focusing on Grindelwald's rise and Dumbledore's involvement. Despite initial plans for five movies, the future of the series is uncertain due to poor box office performance and controversy.
As the Wizarding World franchise continues to grow, the complete Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies order becomes more complex. J.K. Rowling's magical novels became one of Hollywood's biggest franchises throughout the 2000s. Audiences watched eight movies centered around Daniel Radcliffe's Harry Potter that showed his ascension through Hogwarts and pivotal role in defeating Voldemort. The eight Harry Potter films were followed by a prequel series, Fantastic Beasts, and is now going to be expanded further by a reboot TV series.
The Fantastic Beasts movies kicked off in 2016 with Eddie Redmayne's magizoologist Newt Scamander taking the lead role.

The Harry Potter franchise is incredibly successful, making over $9.5 billion in worldwide box office sales and selling millions of copies of the books. The first two movies, directed by Chris Columbus, are the most faithful adaptations of the books, staying true to the narrative beats. As the series progressed, the movie runtimes varied, sometimes leading to pacing issues and the exclusion of important characters and plot points. However, the split of the final book into two movies allowed for a more comprehensive adaptation.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films began with The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. Over the next 14 years, Disney would go on to produce four more films in the franchise. As of 2017, the film franchise did not seem to be slowing down at all, with fans still watching the sequels. However, the franchise hit a bit of a roadblock when, in 2018, while plans for a sixth film were underway, Johnny Depp's ex-wife Amber Heard posted an editorial piece in The Washington Post alleging that Depp had abused her. Disney parted ways with Depp, and he was removed as Captain Jack Sparrow, his infamous and Oscar-nominated character from Pirates of the Caribbean. Whether you agree with Depp or Heard in the 2022 defamation trail, where Depp sued Heard and won, it's clear from the films so far that Pirates of the Caribbean is a franchise built upon his character.

The format of a TV show provides opportunities that the Harry Potter movies didn't have. John Williams' music is an iconic element of Harry Potter that needs to be preserved in the TV show. Other franchises like Spider-Man and James Bond have successfully reused their iconic music in reboots, and the Harry Potter TV show should do the same.
The Harry Potter TV show will likely explore different avenues to separate itself from the movies, but there's a certain element that needs to remain unchanged. The format of a TV show allows for various opportunities that the original movies missed out on when adapting every Harry Potter book. While the coming reboot should distance itself from the famous film series led by Daniel Radcliffe, keeping one specific element intact will be unavoidable when the story is once more reimagined.

The international box office was generally muted this weekend, save for in China which ushered in the Year of the Dragon on Saturday, and with it the lucrative Chinese New Year moviegoing period. According to early figures from Maoyan, the first two days of Spring Festival 2024 amassed Rmb 2.44B ($339M), just a touch below the comparable days in 2023.
Although Maoyan’s Pegasus 2 was tops on Saturday, the first day of the holiday, ultimately it was the Jia Ling Cfg/Alibaba inspirational film Yolo that won the weekend with an estimated Rmb 804M ($112M/comScore has it slightly lower at $110.4M) across the two-day stretch. The year 2023 didn’t shine brightly for superhero movies, particularly within the Dceu, where profitability was a struggle for most releases. The last Dceu installment faced daunting challenges, as ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ marked the end of the Dceu era without a clear narrative continuation. Compounding this, the movie faced limited marketing due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, and controversy surrounding Amber Heard’s involvement following her highly publicized trial with ex-spouse Johnny Depp, leading to potential viewer boycotts.
Initial critical reception reflected the challenges, with the movie holding a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes within the first 48 hours and receiving a “B” CinemaScore, placing it among the lowest-rated Dceu films. Despite earning $28 million in its first three days—less than the projected $40 million—the film outperformed others in its opening.

2023 was not exactly a stellar year for superhero movies, and this trend continued even before as far as Dceu is concerned since barely any movie struggled to make a profit. The expectations were pretty grim when it came to the last Dceu installment for several reasons. First, following the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Dceu was officially over, and the movie quite frankly led nowhere. Second, due to the SAG-AFTRA strike the movie had barely any marketing and to top it all, Amber Heard had a role in the movie following her messy public trial against former spouse Johnny Depp which caused some would-be viewers to boycott the movie.
Following the release, the movie held 36% on Rotten Tomatoes during the first 48 hours, and it earned and “B” CinemaScore based on early audience impressions, which put him among the lowest-rated movies in the Dceu.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Each actor who portrayed Gellert Grindelwald brought their own distinct flavor to the role in the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises. Grindelwald and Dumbledore were close in the past, planning to bring the Wizarding World out of hiding, but Dumbledore distanced himself after his sister's death. Despite the recasting of Grindelwald multiple times, the franchise's final installment, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, was a box-office disaster and couldn't save the franchise.
There were many Gellert Grindelwald actors throughout the Harry Potter franchise, especially as Fantastic Beasts brought him into the spotlight. Each iteration of the infamous wizard Gellert Grindelwald has been wildly different from the other, with each actor bringing their distinctive flavor to the role. Gellert Grindelwald is mentioned a few times throughout the Harry Potter books, but his first official introduction was in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book as an old "friend" hidden in Dumbledore’s past.

The third installment in the Harry Potter prequel series certainly had a lot of questions to answer. Its predecessor, 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, had ended with the shocking revelation that the Obscurus, Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), was a member of the Dumbledore family. Credence is recruited to the dark arts by the evil wizard Grindelwald; Johnny Depp originally played the role, but in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, he was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen. The recasting was only part of the reason that The Secrets of Dumbledore had such a troubled production. J.K. Rowling’s transphobic comments shadowed the project, and many felt that The Crimes of Grindelwald had masked the romantic relationship between Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), in what could have been a great moment for LGBT+ representation in a blockbuster film.

The first book in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone" here in the States) was first published in June of 1997. It was written by author J.K. Rowling, long before she had been driven mad by an infuriating streak of unabashed transphobia that she insists on adhering to. Thanks to years of bigoted screaming, Rowling's legacy has been wholly tainted, and it's hard to read her lighthearted children's fantasy books without thinking of her poisonous worldview. If one checks out the Harry Potter books from the library, however, one can still enjoy the adventures and complex Wizarding World of Harry Potter without giving Rowling another dime.
Before her mind snapped open in public, however, the Harry Potter books — and their subsequent movie adaptations — were widely beloved. The title character was an impoverished 11-year-old who was forced to live in a closet with his abusive aunt and uncle.

Mads Mikkelsen believes that his frequent casting as the villain in Hollywood films is due to his Danish accent, which has become popular in recent years. Veteran actor Mads Mikkelsen is often playing villains with his roles, and the reason for that is pretty simple according to the Hannibal star.
Mikkelsen has notably played villains for major franchise films including Casino Royale, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Per Deadline, he addressed his frequent villain casting in a masterclass at Marrakech Film Festival on Saturday, observing how that typically happened in Hollywood while he's more often cast as a flawed hero in European productions. That has Mikkelsen guessing that it's his accent more than anything that leads to his villain roles.

Directorial swaps can work to the benefit of a franchise, as seen with Alfonso Cuarón's impact on the Harry Potter films. Sticking with the same director can lead to declining quality, as exemplified by the Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay. Sometimes, a new director is needed to bring a fresh and successful vision, as seen with Taika Waititi's impact on the Thor series.
It's common for major movie franchises to switch directors frequently, but oftentimes, franchises have stuck with the same vision when it wasn't working, resulting in weak installments. Film is a director's medium, but franchise movies often rely more on their intellectual property than their director. Typically, big blockbuster movies have a larger creative team making decisions rather than smaller independent films that depend on the abilities of their auteur. Still, the director is responsible for bringing leadership to a set and for bringing the studio's vision to life.

Newt Scamander's story has become less of a focus in the Fantastic Beasts franchise as the narrative has shifted toward exploring the past and the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. The likelihood of Fantastic Beasts 4 happening is very low, as director David Yates is busy with other projects and there is no confirmation or information from Warner Bros. about continuing the franchise. An Easter egg in the Harry Potter series suggests that Newt Scamander was present at Hogwarts during the events of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which opens up opportunities for his inclusion in the Harry Potter remake and further exploration of his adventures.

Ever since the release of the first movie, the Fantastic Beasts franchise clearly hasn't had an easy ride, and it seems as though it is in dire need of some Felix Felicis. The franchise's failure really comes as no surprise, considering its blatant disregard for a significant portion of what made the Harry Potter movies so exceptional and well-liked. To be fair, it is extremely difficult to follow in the footsteps of the Harry Potter movies since the worldwide success is undeniable, and an utterly dedicated fandom was formed.
That being said, Fantastic Beasts would have a wonderful foundation to work with, look up to, and take notes from; however, they seem to overlook valuable facts instead. With five films planned to depict the story of magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), the Wizarding World, and the truth about Gellert Grindelwald's ascent, Warner Bros. had high hopes for the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

The Harry Potter TV remake won't be enough to save the Wizarding World, as it lacks the awe and wonder of the cinematic franchise. The Fantastic Beasts movies failed to live up to the excitement and immersiveness of Harry Potter, with rushed storylines and lackluster character dynamics. Warner Bros. should redeem the Wizarding World with a new Harry Potter movie like "The Cursed Child" or a spinoff focusing on Charlie Weasley's thrilling adventures in Romania.
The upcoming Harry Potter TV remake is a bittersweet development, as even the benefits of returning to the original story won't be enough to save the Wizarding World. Although the original Harry Potter story could benefit from the length and pacing of a TV series, which would allow it to expand on the events of the books, this remake isn't what the franchise needs.

Fantastic Beasts 4 is currently on hold with no development happening, according to director David Yates. Yates has mentioned exploring other non-wizard projects, suggesting his involvement in Fantastic Beasts 4 is uncertain. The declining success of the spinoff franchise and lower Rotten Tomatoes scores also cast doubts on the future of Fantastic Beasts 4.
Fantastic Beasts 4 gets a discouraging update from the franchise director. Helmed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a film trilogy consisting of the first film of the same name, as well as two sequels: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The Fantastic Beasts series has been thought to have a Fantastic Beasts 4 and Fantastic Beasts 5 coming after The Secrets of Dumbledore.

Fantastic Beasts 4 & 5 are unlikely to happen, which is ultimately best for the Wizarding World's future. The franchise wasn't working and lacked audience interest. The Secrets of Dumbledore provided a fitting ending for most characters, wrapping up several arcs. However, not getting to see the iconic Dumbledore vs. Grindelwald duel, which Fantastic Beasts was building to, is a missed opportunity.
Fantastic Beasts 4 & 5 almost certainly won’t happen, but ultimately that’s best for the Wizarding World’s future. Fantastic Beasts seemed like a bad idea from the get-go: turning a small textbook from Harry Potter into not just a movie, but an entire franchise, was very much the move of a Hollywood increasingly obsessed with IPs and a studio who needed to maintain a huge cash-cow. However, the first movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, proved people wrong. It was a movie filled with great new characters, and captured...

Fantastic Beasts director David Yates was surprised to learn that there were plans for five films in the franchise, as the announcement came during a press screening for the first movie. The franchise's box office performance has steadily declined with each successive film, leading to doubts about its future and the likelihood of another Fantastic Beasts movie being made. One of the main reasons for the franchise's failure was the drastic change in direction and tone between the first and second movies, which alienated viewers and undermined the overall coherence of the series.
Fantastic Beasts director David Yates did not originally know about the long-term plan for the franchise. A spinoff and prequel for the Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Beasts is set decades earlier and revolves around Albus Dumbledore and Newt Scamander. The movies have suffered extreme criticism due to the extreme change of tone and stakes between each iteration.

Fantastic Beasts filmmaker David Yates told Total Film that the Harry Potter spinoff feature franchise “is parked.”
That’s a very similar message to what he told us back at TIFF, however, that was in regards to his involvement with the overall Harry Potter franchise..
We’ve reached out to Warner Bros to get an update on whether the J.K. Rowling spinoff features are truly on ice; the author originally announcing on a pre-fan day for the film back in 2016 with producer David Heyman that the plan was for five Fantastic Beasts movies, set in five different cities.
Fantastic Beasts followed the adventures of writer Newt Scamander (who penned one of Harry Potter’s textbooks) in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards.

The Fantastic Beasts movies are essentially done, at least for now.
David Yates, who directed the three Wizarding World of Harry Potter prequel movies and the last four Hp movies, is speaking out about the possibility of a fourth Fantastic Beasts film.
If you recall, the last one, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, did not do well at the box office and was the lowest performing film in the entire Harry Potter franchise. Because of this, it was unknown if another film would be happening.

Speaking with Total Film Magazine, the director of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts said the enchanted spin-off prequel franchise is “parked” after three movies. The “Fantastic Beasts” movie franchise is “parked,” director David Yates said in a new interview with Total Film magazine. The franchise, headlined by Eddie Redmayne, is a prequel to “Harry Potter” that was designed by author J.K. Rowling as a five-film series. Three films have been released — “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (2016), “The Crimes of Grindelwald” (2018) and “The Secrets of Dumbledore” (2022) — but the lackluster box office returns to the third entry ($407 million worldwide) led many “Harry Potter” fans to question if two more films would become a reality.

Warner Bros. has cast an Immobulus spell on Fantastic Beasts.
Director David Yates gave an update about the beleaguered franchise, which halted after three of its five planned films were released.

David Yates, who directed all three Fantastic Beasts movies and four Harry Potter films, casts doubt on the future of the spinoff franchise. While there was originally a five-movie plan for Fantastic Beasts, Yates says the franchise is "parked". The two most recent movies in the franchise were not especially well-received, and The Secrets of Dumbledore underperformed commercially, suggesting that it's for the best that the spinoff saga not continue.
Harry Potter veteran director David Yates, who also directed all the Fantastic Beasts movies, casts doubt on the spinoff saga's future. Keen to capitalize on the enduring love of the Harry Potter franchise, Warner Bros. released Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016. The success of the spinoff led to two sequels, the most recent of which hit theaters last year, neither of which were particularly well-received.

It was announced in May 2022 that Netflix acquired the film Pain Hustlers in one of the largest deals at the Cannes market, coming in at a whopping $50 million. Netflix has been working overtime to build up its catalog of original movies, and it seems that this deal only cements that notion. Their original content is produced, co-produced, or distributed by Netflix exclusively and is funded differently than other TV networks.
Pain Hustlers had a lot of major talent behind it, from being directed by David Yates, best known for the Harry Potter films, as well as securing stars like Emily Blunt and Chris Evans. The film's plot and trailers have hinted at a satirical comedy about corporate greed similar to films like The Big Short or The Wolf of Wall Street.

David Yates, director of seven Harry Potter films, definitively states that he has no interest in being involved in the upcoming TV adaptation. The Harry Potter TV show was announced earlier this year, with Max promising a "faithful" adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novels. The series will feature an entirely new cast and is expected to run for at least seven seasons, one for each of Rowling's books.
Harry Potter director David Yates comments on whether he will be returning in any capacity for the announced TV remake. Based on the beloved novels by controversial author J.K. Rowling, the first Harry Potter in 2001 spawned a series of popular sequels and spinoffs. With the main saga having concluded back in 2011, Max announced earlier this year that a TV show adaptation of Rowling's book was in development.

Before the “Harry Potter” films, there were J.K. Rowling’s books. The first book, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” was published in 1997. Nearly 26 years later, eleven films, one reunion special and a Universal experience dedicated to the magical Wizarding World have grown out of Rowling’s literary staple in childhood fiction.
