Python are back
27 January 2019 | by Donatien3See all my reviews

After a break of 30-odd years, Monty Python announced a special live comeback at London's O2 Arena in July 2014, "One Down Five to Go." This documentary tracks the origin of the shows, the rehearsal, how the Python boys got on after so many years apart and the reaction to the shows.

While the shows are necessitated by a massive lawsuit debt, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam take it seriously, wanting to make the audience laugh like it's the 70s again, rather than coast on past glories (they navigate warm up show technical problems with good humour). They make plenty of jokes about being old men, but don't let it affect their professionalism, though Cleese does crack up a few times. There's also a special cameo from Mike Myers (arguably the best thing he's done since Austin Powers finished) in the televised final show.

The most interesting revelations come from Gilliam, who still feels the self-imposed pressure to perform with the others after all these years, as he says his strengths are up on the screen in the linking animations.

There's also some reminiscing about the old days, with archival footage and fond memories of the late Graham Chapman, who Palin reflects would have loved doing the new shows.

A perfect companion to the "One Down, Five to Go" live show, "The Meaning of Live" is a must-watch for Python fans.
