Alan gets a letter saying that Charlie has over two million in royalties. And he of course tries to get it but he needs Charlie's death certificate. So he goes to his mother to get it but she doesn't have it. And when Alan and his mother get packages and messages of a threatening nature, they wonder, is he really dead.

In the beginning of Part 1 Alan wants to obtain Charlie's death certificate. He begins by asking his mother, but that would be unnecessary since death certificates are public records filed at the local courthouse. More importantly, a death certificate is required to close out an estate even if the person died intestate. Walden could not have purchased Charlie's house unless a death certificate was filed.
