You get what you expect
nooneheremovealong1 September 2017
I am guessing the main reason to watch this movie is the cast, and it delivers. Everything you would expect to be there, is there - in full.

Dialogue is a bit stilted, but then again: to be expected. Acting and story also not amongst the strengths of this flick.

All in all: one of the breast movies of 2017.

Stupid but Fun
aprilsfriendorin22 August 2020
Is this movie kind of dumb? Yes. But did I enjoy it? Honestly- yes. Obviously the whole trope that two good friends would jeopardize said friendship over a random guy is ridiculously overdone and stupid, but as long as you don't take it seriously you'll have a solid time. It's not witty humor- it's largely slapstick comedy. If that's not your thing, then skip it. But if you're looking for something dumb but entertaining, give it a shot.

too hot problem
SnoopyStyle24 February 2018
Meg (Kate Upton) and Kate (Alexandra Daddario) are best friends since childhood. The two Seattle roommates are struggling and Meg decides on a girls trip to Fort Lauderdale. They have hunky Ryan (Matt Barr) sitting in between them and a competition ensues. The plane is diverted to St. Louis due to a hurricane. They stay at a hotel with fellow passengers. The threesome join passenger Craig (Matt Jones) on a drive to the Fort.

William H. Macy tries his hand at directing. It's questionable how two of the hottest women on the planet would fight over the same guy. Sure he's hunky but these girls could snap their fingers and get any guy they want. As for their acting talents, Kate Upton functions well for an SI Swimsuit model. Daddario actually has some comedic skills although that's not her natural talents. It's also weird to have her as a less-hot side kick. That standard role has a pantheon of great actresses. I don't think she is build to play one. While this has some slapstick fun, it can never overcome the hot-girl-struggles problem. Daddario is too hot to be the dumpy best friend. Although I love Daddario, her role needs to be given to a real comedian. The script is nothing to write home about. I do sympathize with the girls trying their best.

You need to see it to understand how horrible it is because no words can do that justice.

absolutely lame

Absolutely horrible.Terrible plot. Attempt at humor: someone farting in the car and the others characters' reactions.Their hot air balloon falls on a kids birthday cake.Kate Upton is a terrible actress-she f bombs her way through the plot on one emotionless level. An absolute waste of time.

Awful
isabellagamble1 September 2017
Didn't laugh once. The story, acting and directing was terrible. I usually don't find these sorts of romantic comedies that bad and I laugh very easily but the humour was just so forced and lame. 100% Wouldn't recommend watching it in cinemas. Shouldn't even be rated R as their is no nudity, foul language or heavy violence.

A raunchy comedy that doesn't overstay it's welcome
SkyWater818 November 2020
Alexandria Daddario and Kate Upton are obviously having a blast in the occasionally funny raunchy comedy. And they both come through in the eye candy department as well. They'll have you wondering which of them you'd choose if you were the lucky guy they were smitten with. It's light and fluffy. And watchable, of course, Kate and Alexandria would be.

Goes unnoticed
Floated22 June 2018
The Layover is an R-rated comedy starring Kate Upton and Alexandra Daddrio. The film has its moments but it's clear from its trailers what to expect. Being largely panned from critics, one should have low expectations when watching. At most, the Layover, the film feels like a teenage sitcom or something in which twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have done in their time back then.

The comedy isn't too forced but it really isn't funny in many ways. Predictable and television type humor. The film isn't too long which passes time quickly, though other than most there is some entertainment watching both leads interact with one another. It's a light hearted comedy, perhaps some critics are being too harsh. It's what to expect.

A variation on a theme - adequate road movie
thekarmicnomad24 October 2017
Two women who have known each other since school find themselves down on their luck. One is impulsive and care-free the other responsible and considered. A spontaneous trip away sees them stranded with a hot guy they are both interested in.

This is a pretty well used format, but normally with two guys chasing a pretty girl. With the genders flipped it means the knob gags are switched for boob gags and the girls try to out-flirt each other rather than out- impress each other.

Now there is nothing particularly new here and I didn't find the film hilariously funny.

But the two leads are very engaging and have great chemistry. Their relationship is quite subtly handled and I enjoyed their antics. Their quarry fits the bill perfectly and feels worthy of their attention.

This isn't the funniest or slickest comedy out there but I found it a great waste of ninety minutes.

Just because hot girls do crazy stuff, doesn't mean it's funny
srdjan_veljkovic13 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The girls are hot and actually interesting, not one of these modern cookie-cutter girls you see all around. Kate Upton with a "I'm not skinny and I don't care (mostly because I have big boobs, but, that is beside the point)" and Alexandra Daddario with those peculiar eyes, also do a decent enough job acting, which is actually a nice surprise for Upton. Story is also mostly OK, nothing special, but, based on real stuff (we've all seen these "girlfights for the guy" amongst our friends) and has the potential to be funny.

Sadly, it's not. Funny. In all honesty, there are a few funny moments and some fun to be had, but, mostly, it's just these hotties doing crazy stuff. It's somewhat interesting and you do stay watching them, but, it's far from enough to make even a half-decent comedy.

Apart from some problems in the script (like near the end, when Daddario "threatens" the principal, refusing to resign as a teacher, yet I don't think anybody has any idea what she threatens him with), the biggest problem seems to be the lack of "chemistry" between the leads, including the male (object of their affections). Look-wise, it's good casting. Otherwise, it's bad. The best chemistry we get from Upton and the "fourth wheel" guy they pick up along the way.

Bottom line: you can watch these hotties in other stuff, so skip this one.

Why all the negative reviews!
michelle_kummer9 June 2018
I absolutely loved this film, being female I have seen the competition for a guy over the years and it does happen. Sometimes friends are attracted to the same guy and will try and out do each other. Both Kate and Alexandra did a fabulous job acting so crazy for this one guy. The lengths they go too literally had me laughing so loud. The girls are totally opposite in personality but both equally gorgeous. Personally I think Zac Efron or Scott Eastwood should have been cast as the guy isn't even really worth the fight. Don't listen to the bad reviews and give this film a go. Definitely a chick flick and well done to the girls.

An Abomination
larrys34 October 2017
It's hard to believe one of the screen's fine talents, William H.Macy, directed this abomination of a movie. I don't care if it's raunchy and crude which it certainly is, but it's also horribly unfunny and that's a deadly combination in my book. To add insult to injury, I found the film to be terribly demeaning of women.

All in all, save yourself the pain and run far far away from this stinker!

Possibly the worst film I have ever seen. Really sad to see two strong beautiful women clambering after one man in a desperate situation. Pathetic. Don't bother.

Poor
ian-86421 November 2018
Dissapointing in that there was a lot of untapped potential in this movie. The main problem in my opinion is that The main characters are as likeable as they are funny - and they are not funny. It's poorly written and suffers from a kind of thinly veiled cynicism that is actually quite depressing.

VIEWS ON FILM review of The Layover
burlesonjesse55 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Meg (Kate Upton) and Kate (Alexandra Daddario) are best friends who live together. Meg is really bad at selling beauty products and Kate is a high school teacher who might be forced to resign. When their lives become screwed up, they decide to relax and take a trip to Florida. On their plane ride to the Sunshine State, Meg and Kate encounter a pending hurricane and are diverted to St. Louis, MO. While stuck in St. Louis, they compete hard for a hunky guy (Matt Barr as Ryan) and fracture each other's friendship in the process. That's the central theme of The Layover, my latest review.

By definition, a film director controls a movie's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision. William H. Macy, a shining TV actor who kills it on Shameless, is "Layover's" antonym director. As you watch The Layover, you wonder if Macy lost a bet or had pressure from the suits at Vertical Entertainment to put out an assembly line, R-rated comedy product. In jest, "Layover" has almost no cinematic innovation, a loose plot, and virtually zero character development. It runs 88 minutes, is playing in only a handful of theaters, and has been mostly demoted to release by way of the Internet. Granted, these are all bad signs. Believe that.

Now it's hard for me to accept that William H. Macy actually filmed The Layover. Sadly, he did and he makes a lot of mistakes in his second directorial effort. The first is casting Kate Upton in one of the lead roles and then relegating known troupers like Kal Penn and Rob Corddry to two-minute cameos. Listen, I think Upton is pretty to look at and she gets props for having the same birthplace as me (St. Joseph, MI). But let's be real shall we. She's not ready to carry a movie yet and her acting is borderline inept. It's mind-boggling to think that Macy would truly approve of some of her dialogue takes. When Kate's Meg is trying to say something sincere or trying to appear unladylike, it's cringe- worthy as heck.

Another mistake Macy makes is the general way in which he presents The Layover itself. There are plenty of slapstick moments, road trip instances, a ridiculous sex scene straight from the annals of Macy's own Shameless, some bathroom humor, and the usual, sexual innuendo. These elements feel like pawns to simply keep the narrative going. Overall, the brand of funny here feels forced and familiar and that's something William H. Macy never exhibits when brilliantly playing a sleazeball on America's television set.

Finally, Macy makes the big miscalculation of approving a film soundtrack that could take Muzak to a whole new level. With the exception of Human League's 1981 ditty "Do You Want Me", every song in The Layover could easily be featured on a Kidz Bop compilation album. Basically, we're talking about tunes that can make your ears bleed.

In conclusion, William H. Macy's direction is uniformly standard. With minimal sway, Bill almost holds back on the R-rated fare and tries to wrap up "Layover" in the same sort of fashion as Kate Upton's other flick, The Other Woman (small spoiler). Here's the problem: The Other Woman with its notion of girl-minded revenge and guy player mentality, wasn't that great to begin with. Bottom line: The Layover gets a one and a half star rating from me. As a moviegoer, you really need to "delay" yourself from seeing it.

A nice experience for home theater
abokhaiirvin2 September 2017
There was a lot of natural acting done in this movie, and by natural i mean not over enhanced for viewing experience, by that i am saying that Kate Upton and Alexandra Daddario are very good actors, the only problem was that their acting was too real in a sort of way that puts the viewing experience off at times, but i had a lot of laughs and reactions to scenes so it was a good experience.

With that being said ill have to say that yes the scripting was really bad, they could have done a lot more to make this a good movie, the camera shots were good most times, and there is a fair amount of fan service as you may expect.

So its not really a cinema worthy movie for everyone, but i would still recommend it to be watched for the experience.

A fun watch
L_Miller22 July 2018
Get your mind out of the gutter - these two ladies aren't going to take it off for your premium cable viewing pleasure like Cinemax soft-core stars.

They're just a couple of beautiful women looking to break out of that mute object of desire/rescue/affection model by doing a fun Bridesmaids/Girls Night/Sweetest Thing misbehaving ladies comedy so there's poop jokes and simu-sex a la Melissa Rauch in The Bronze.

You get some watchable chemistry between Kate and Alexandra and Matt Jones adding some fun - it's good to see Badger getting work.

Check it out - some laughs and there's a couple of cheesecake scenes but not going to need any blurring in the cable version - R is for language and drug use.

Wasn't that bad I've seen worst we all do , main reason of watching this movie I wanted to kill some time in early morning 5am so other genres won't fit at this time so comedy was my choice also because of Alexandra Daddario in it , The movie was funny enough for me wasn't that great and wasn't that bad either so don't depend on the rating and reviews all the time !

I surprisingly enjoyed this movie. Well done comedy for females. Kate Upton and Alexandra Daddario worked well together. Great comedic chemistry. This would definitely work well as a sitcom.

It always pulls me to check movies where half of the people put horrible rating and a few nice one. This is a different and original movie. It's not perfect but quite entertaining and not with a s typical structure.

Frustrating
katypualani20 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I don't mind that these aren't the most poignant or well-written movies. It's a rom-com; that's not why you watch them. But this was hard to watch at times. It's one thing for them to be constantly competing over a guy, but Kate Upton's character is just awful. She steals her friend's airline miles, locks her in an unsanitary public bathroom, doesn't care when she has a panic attack on a hot air balloon, endangers everyone by blinding the guy flying the balloon, tries to drug her friend, doesn't tell anyone that she accidentally drugged the guy driving the car which led to them getting in a car accident, punches her "friend" in the throat, and probably more I'm forgetting. Alexandra Daddario's character may have competed for the guy, but she always looked out for her friend - warning her about flashing people in a bar, tried to keep her from getting hurt in the pool, and genuinely caring for her friend.

From the get-go, you know Upton's character a terrible person. Daddario seems to get in trouble with her job for asking a kid to read from whatever he's hiding, which happens to be inappropriate. Upton's character gets fired for intentionally trying to deceive companies into buying illegal North Korean cosmetics. At least there's a semi-happy ending when they stop living together so Daddario can get her sh*t together without Upton around.

Layover
questl-185929 October 2019
This is classic movie fodder for one of the cable channels to run during the day. It's not really aiming for anything particularly lofty and it doesn't get there. It's a mostly not funny comedy about a sexually outgoing woman that relies on her looks to make it through life and an organized, reserved worrier with a long list of "flaws" that also happens to be beautiful competing for the attention of some hot stranger.

What follows is nearly an hour and a half of who can outflirt the other. With a resolution that doesn't seem to make up for the rest of the movie. There's definitely eye candy to be enjoyed but the humor mostly misses, the performances are uninspired and there's a lingering sense of fan service that is probably a touch inappropriate in this day and age yet at the same time fails to even be proper fan servicing, which is an impressively disappointing line to walk.

It's not actively offensive but it also didn't hold my attention to really be 'actively' anything. It's just... There.

If this is the kind of garbage kids are watching and absorbing with glee today, no wonder the country is in such a mess.
