‘The Outsider’: How HBO’s Sleeper Hit Made the Boogeyman Into a Reality
Can a gritty crime drama really ask viewers to believe in the boogeyman? “The Outsider” is about to find out.

“I hate stories in which on page seven the zombies are there, and by page eight everyone is going, ‘Oh, [sure], zombies.'” showrunner and executive producer Richard Price said in an interview with IndieWire. “It’s like, wait a minute — I don’t care if they’re a cop or a mailman, how do you get a normal person not only to believe in some crazy shit that’s not human — but act on it?”

The question lingers over Price’s blend of police procedural and supernatural thriller, as both the characters and audience have to be satisfied with answers based on the “crazy shit” Price is talking about. After five episodes setting up a mystery, the pivotal sixth entry in HBO’s Stephen King adaptation reveals how its confounding central mystery will be solved,

‘High Maintenance’ Season 4 Review: The Only Show That Gets New York Is Still Flying High

Back in HBO’s heyday, “Sex and the City” defined a particular highly-branded image of New York City: Cocktail bars with velvet ropes serving Cosmopolitans to sexually-liberated thirtysomething women. New York was Carrie Bradshaw’s true first love, and it was the fifth member of the gang, as much a part of the show as Mr. Big or Manolo Blahniks. While acknowledging all of its humor and heart, the world of “Sex and the City” was moneyed, white, and apolitical. More than 20 years later, HBO is airing a very different little show, one that is just as in love with the unique texture of New York City while reflecting the breadth of characters that make it so beautiful.

In its fourth season, “High Maintenance” is still riding high. While certain vignettes will always resonate more than others, early episodes of Season 4 prove that creators Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld still

‘Clockers,’ ‘The Night Of’ Writer Richard Price: ‘Screenwriting Saved My Life’
“Screenwriting saved my life.”

That was the simple and heartfelt statement delivered by Richard Price, the acclaimed novelist and screenwriter behind such notable works as “Clockers,” “Mad Dog and Glory,” “The Night Of” and “The Wire,” as he collected the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for career achievement from the WGA East on Saturday night during the East Coast ceremony at Manhattan’s Edison Ballroom.

Price told the crowd that moving into screenwriting helped broaden his horizons and make him a better overall writer. After writing his first novel at 24, he was burned out by 30 as he worked on book No. 4.

“I was so ripe with despair you could smell it on me,” he said. “Screenwriting saved my life — my mental life, my spiritual life, my financial life and actually my physical life.”

He moved into screenwriting and became a “coke head” at the same time, reasoning “well, if I’m

‘Dare Me’: A Perspective-Twisting Hour Is One of the Best TV Episodes of the Year So Far

‘Dare Me’: A Perspective-Twisting Hour Is One of the Best TV Episodes of the Year So Far
[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Dare Me” Episode 5, “Parallel Trenches.”]

The opening of each episode of “Dare Me” is its own pearl, presenting the audience with a mystifying piece of visual information that hints at where things might be heading. In the case of Episode 5, that image is a floating tooth, drifting — as some of the series central characters are, too. Unsettling in isolation and horrific in context, it’s just one of the many storytelling levels that this USA series has discovered for itself.

“I think we felt freer to be more abstract and surreal as it goes,” series co-creator and novel author Megan Abbott told IndieWire. “This show has gone somewhat into this sort of unconscious state, with dreams and the different POVs. It gives you a little more freedom to play. We’re all David Lynch fans among the room and the crew and everybody, so we would often talk about our David Lynch moment.
