The spaceship, traveling with the speed of light for 10 years, is receiving data communications from Earth about events happening a month ago. Assuming that communications are transmitted by radio waves that travel with about the speed of light, it would take the transmission much longer to play "catch up" with the still-moving spaceship. Writer/director Alex Rask explains, however, that the data communications were traveling through the traversable black holes - thus cutting down on time required to reach the spaceship.
And why didn't the spaceship itself travel that way? - because it's year 2043, and human passage through the black holes is not yet FDA approved, explains Alex. Only data can be sent that way.
