A beautiful anime
soy_exactamente_asi4 April 2021
I'm not going to lie, it took me a bit to get past the second chapter. It looked like it was going to be ecchi. One of those ecchi-comedy that is vulgar as it is bland. The fourth episode hooked me and the sixth one made me fall in love with this. It ends up being a Slice of life anime. A lovely one. I would have liked it to continue, but the ending was nice. One knows that they will stay together. Where they come from? No matter. They found in the group the strength to start a new life.

A continuation of themes explored in Sword Art Online and Log Horizon
jtcanalicsu2 May 2016
This series continuation of themes explored in Sword Art Online and Log Horizon.

Taking a mix of the two...pretend like there wasn't the big reveal at the beginning of SOA as to why they were trapped in the game and pretend like there wasn't the awkward shrug off every character in Log Horizon, that was like 'oh fiddle-sticks I got stuck in a video game,' and you have Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. Not entirely sure how they got into this creative world, but here they are.

The art in the series is a 9 out of 10. The characters are clearly in their own character journey and while at their modest start-up stage in the first 12 episodes, they are entertaining and full of quirks particular to each character.

I am excited for the continuation of the series.

Decent Japanese Animation
ramkoil2 August 2016
I have watched many Japanese animation, some are unforgettable such as Ghibili productions or animation series such as Erased. But not all have to be unforgettable or outstanding, some are light and easy such as Ranma. This animation while is not fantastic it is nice and enjoyable maybe a little slanted toward mid teens. Never the less any Japanese animation is far better than the pasteurized, homogenized, franchised cookie cutter Hollywood productions. In response to a reviewer who said " It is cringe worthy when in the first scene of the series it is portraying the females as useless and clumsy damsels in distress….." Maybe you have watched too many Hollywood shows where 50 KG females with stick figures easily over power men 3 times their size but in real world females do rely on their male kinsmen and friends to defend them, where physical strength is needed, and this is one of the good things about most Japanese animations where women are women and men are still men, this does not mean women are not strong. On the contrary women are shown to be truly strong, i.e. not physically but strong in will and character. You should see Kikyo in Inuyasha or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Again one can not satisfy everyone, especially when views of reality has been so warped by popular culture and interest groups. Enjoy

This show deserves a second season
roel-coppens7 May 2021
This is my first time i write a review besides having rated over a 1000 movies and series. Purely because its such a shame this serie wont get a second season. Beautifully made! Character development is of the charts aswel.

They end the show in a smart way so you wont feel longing for a second season bjt it just deserves it.

For a real isekai/anime lover as myself this was really a refreshing show. Not the standard nonsense.

Fantastic Anime
jeffreystaats6213 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This a really great anime and an epic finish. It was ended perfectly especially since they haven't announced a 2nd season. It definitely has several moments that will bring you to tears. Those moments aside it has a very good story of no matter how much pain and sorrow you are in never give up and push forward. The only reason I didn't give it the full ten stars is that I wish they would've gone into more detail of how the characters ended up in this fantasy world. I would highly recommend this anime to anyone.

Character development, stylized watercolor artwork.
lastunicorns-4184810 September 2019
I really enjoyed the change of pace from other anime. If you don't feel like watching the characters scrounge for food or money, or observing every new item or skill, this may not be for you.

The characters have extremely mixed but distinct personalities, something more reminiscent of reality then many other tv shows. I feel anime as a whole tries to push single or double character traits/personalities even on main characters, and the variety of traits displayed by each character is uncommon among anime. This a quality I find to be rare in anime, and I'm glad to see one with personality development, and even change as the story progresses.

The artwork is wonderful and again, rather unique; it's picturesque and tinted like watercolors, but the 3D animation isn't the greatest, (shown in large group movement/fight scenes).

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash
WeAreLive1 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have just finished watching all 13 episodes yesterday and I actually enjoyed this anime. I am not really into many of Funimation's animes but I actually enjoyed this. But I would skip the OVA because the whole episode was about the boys sneaking into the girls bath. Seriously?

If you enjoy Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, The Hobbit/The Lord of the rings or Fire Emblem then you might end up enjoying this anime. Since it has so many of those themes.

As usually voice actors, animation, art style and character designs are very good. The characters are very likeable except Ranta because I found him annoying and I wish they got rid of him instead. Okay in episode 4 there is a death of a key but I won't spoil who and the episode after it is very emotional.

Long story short please go watch this anime and make up your own mind. Don't listen to the horrible reviews on this site.

May be become some kind of masterpiece
thesauravmeena16 August 2021
People who give low rating I think they are nearly 15, 16 year old so they don't understand the drama and writing. It's a good anime having possibilities to become top rating anime.

A great show, but very slow.
Quarrel-515 May 2016
I really enjoyed this show, but it does have its faults, and I don't think I can actually recommend this to any of my friends.

The artwork and animation is really nice most of the time. (there are points that it seemed a little numbed down and "cheap")

The story line was pretty simple, and not explained very well. They are all put in this situation at the start of the show, everyone is confused as to why and it is never questioned again ******

There is a LOT of down time (with the characters reflecting on EVERYTHING and feeling sad or confused about stuff, also there is a tone of inner monologue that seems to drag on a lot.) and too much singing and music. A lot of moments I felt bored watching and actually would start surfing the internet.

Some of the dialog is a little childish at times as well.

Aside from some of the small plot holes and dragging on of the show it does have some good moments. I would recommend if you have time to kill or need something on in the background.

Unique but at the same time familiar.
dameon_green11 March 2020
On the surface similar in many ways to the others in the genre (hero wakes up in a new world etc..) the many divergences make it worth watching even if it never gets a follow up season.

-The Art is fantastic and blends together different styles in a way that at first is jarring but quickly becomes something I looked forward to. -Character development is key to the depth of this short series, and draws you in. -The "commitment" to the trials and adventures of the group was a pleasant surprise, with the series taking a surprising path early on.

The anime however isn't perfect and falls short in some areas, for example even as it does a great job developing one key character it fails to deliver on another. But all in all it's flaws are forgivable as was only a single season and the hope is this would be ironed out if the show returns.

Good anime like SAO or Log Horizon
rossayoung15 July 2017
If you are like me and just finished Sword Art Online (SAO) and loved the first season you are probably looking for other Dungeon and Dragon / RPG shows. This one has a slower plot that is more suitable for adults since it focuses more on the mental and emotional struggle of being in a RPG and having to kill goblins to survive. There is a sense of maturing that occurs as the main character becomes the leader of the group, I will say I like SAO and Log Horizon more but I still enjoyed this show

Really good series
kennyT-1998721 December 2021
Its a great anime series!

These are the plus points :

1. The animation is versatile.

2. Focus is given on team building and emotional cues.

3. There is comrade situations, so its a good drama and dynamic for each character.

4. The lead voice monologue is very absorbent and likable.

5. This is a great series to watch if you work in an office/ any team related activities, as it will relate to you in ways of how team building works.

6. There's plenty of excitable moments and scenes, one which feels natural and not over bearing.

Over all the anime is great to watch if you live a busy life and want to connect with something quick and relatable. That's been my experiences.

So well done to the to writers, producers and the entire team for bringing something refreshing, although Its been 5 years since release its only now I had the chance to watch this anime series.

Underrated /everyone should whatch this Story
arielsilvab-764073 October 2023
In the firsts chapters, it's a went a bit slow, it's not like any other anime, there are raw human emotions in the characters. They need to understand what is going on, they need to learn new stuffs, and it's difficult. They don't know thats going on and they do not just acept it.

This anime doesn't rely on fan service, the animation is more artistic than realistic. Love is calm, life is tough.

They really need to sourvive to this world.

Too bad that it didn't receive the marketing it deserved.

I followed the story with the light novels, read them online, and when I was in the middle of the story, I bought the next ones

Looks like this is a materpiece for me.

You won't lose anything if you skip it.
LeParas-123 May 2016
The occasional RPG setting within an anime isn't some new, revolutionary trend. Popularized by Sword Art Online, they seem to be popping up a lot more frequently than before and that isn't something I'm particularly fond of. This is mostly due to the lack of originality that comes with these works. To a novice, this idea may seem spectacular on it's own, but at this point, the same thing has been done over and over again and not once did I consider one of them to be good. With that being said, I believe that this is quite close to the epitome of what an anime should not be - from the embarrassingly awful execution to the completely obnoxious and meaningless characters. It honestly baffles me that some people see this title as average, yet alone good.

It is cringe worthy when in the first scene of the series it is portraying the females as useless and clumsy damsels in distress, unable to do anything on their own apart from scream and cry until their beta-male white knight companions come to the rescue. This makes for some of the worst scenes I have ever seen, like talking about Shihoru's breasts for a good 3-5 minutes.

This is a series that had a lot of initial potential and sounded pretty good on paper but A-1 went the wrong way of doing it. Especially if the characters were handled properly, Grimgar could of been the high point of the RPG genre, covering stuff like how detrimental loss can be in some cases. Sadly, the script looks like something from an otaku's basement.

Not a good one.
diogoleugim15 May 2019
This anime might be one of those a lot of people love and most people hate. I happen to have an opinion most people have. It had the premises to be original and interesting, but it looks like they lost their course around episode 2, and didn't found their way back even after 12 episodes. The animation was cheap at times, to not say worst, the dialogue and monologue were inconsistent and a lot of the story they told found me uninterested. Nevertheless, I found my way around the boredom and managed to see all the episodes, but still had a hard time finding a quality in this series. If you have nothing else better to do, don't try to see this with great expectations.

Introduction of a "Wasted Potential"
ham-ma24224 August 2019
This anime had great potential which can be seen in the first episode, it really stirs the pot of interest. The second episode can be seen as a filler... SECOND EPISODE.

Anywho, the pace of the anime is very slow. Story develops so fast that you can predict that there will be at least 20 seasons of the series. Also the story loops over and over around the same sub-subject and gives zero background story (I mean speaking of the "isekai" genre, the question of the origins comes like 2-3 times and is never answered about anything.

If this anime was a movie, then I'd fully understand it, because it seems just like one big episode which was enlarged. Also the art quality is (at least not the main area/background) is very sketchy, I mean sure it's an art style, but it feels very unfinished/cheap and the dialogues were very poor. Almost no overall character development except for the protagonist. This anime seems to be very on a tight budget, that's how it feels. Also pro-longed, like those youtube videos who were made to be 10min length so they would get ads xD.

Though the great news about this is if you are into very chill and atmospheric anime then this would be a good go. I watched it whole in one day and I even got annoyed by the same theme in dialogues being overused, like the developers were really forcing for somebody to get sad over the same being talked over and over. If it was written by one person then I'd say it was somebody who was trying to get over somebody and didn't know how to let them go so they were focusing on it so much that they let it out on paper and then holding onto it made it into the fking series. GAD, GET OVER IT!

Rather watch paint dry
BoutTime1320 April 2021
Good grief this show was the slowest, most boring, childish, perverted, non-sense, I've ever watched. From the ridiculous dialogue to the epically stupid story plot line, this is by far the poorest excuse for anime. Somewhere some prepubescent losers who obviously have a large breast fantasy and zero experience with real women, somehow created this pathetic drivel. The ONLY reason I even gave this show a chance is it was supposedly on par with Overlord. It couldn't be further from the truth and I flush things with more entertainment value than this anime abortion. If I could give a negative score that would still be too generous for whatever train wreck this is. Save yourself and go watch literally anything else. I MEAN ANYTHING!

Don't watch is escape from reality is what you looking for
b_raven28 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is a reason I watch Isekai/Game anime. I speaks to me as gamer, and I see it as way to somewhat escape the reality. Permanent death does quite the opposite thus the my low rating from. I didn't mind slow pace, introspected, and clearly fillers. This devastating drama is what I least need in escape anime. Despite how decent the show was otherwise, this drastic event killed the show and it was rightfully not renewed.

The animations are ok, though sometime the watercolor painted backgrounds seemed on the weaker side.

Without the death and drama, I might have rating it 7 or 8, but as it stands 4 is what I feel it's worth overall.
