American Masters: Mike Nichols (2016)

*** (out of 4)

Good, if somewhat flawed, episode in the American Masters series takes a look at Mike Nichols, a man who won an Emmy, an Oscar plus plenty of other awards during his career. His partner Elaine May directed this documentary, which features an interview with the man himself as well as comments from the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Nathan Lane and various others.

For the most part this is an entertaining documentary. The interview with Nichols is good and very entertaining and it's nice hearing some thoughts from the famous people he worked with. With that said, there's no question that just 50 minutes wasn't enough time to really get into the career of this man and the film just seems extremely rushed and at times unfocused. I'm not sure if the documentary will be extended at some point but having Hoffman and Spielberg just say a line or two makes you wonder why they were even interviewed.
