Good Teen Movie
destinylives529 October 2016
Better than I expected, "Be Somebody" is about a famous pop singer (played by Matthew Espinosa) who "escapes" his mom/manager and assorted handlers for a few days and lives the life of a regular teenager in a small town. He meets a hardworking, talented, down to earth girl (played by Sarah Jeffery); and despite their lives being complete opposites, they hit it off and become friends quickly. Of course, there is more than a friendly spark between them; but he cannot stay in her world and she cannot be in his world. If a fine balance isn't met, then their budding romance is doomed from the start. "Be Somebody" is not the typical teen movie. Yes, it has a few clichés; but it also leans toward the melodramatic and serious side, and most of the scenes involve just Espinosa and Jeffery. This is a movie older teens will appreciate and find refreshing, I think. My most memorable, movie moment of "Be Somebody" is the scene when Jeffery lets Espinosa in her car so he can avoid a few teen girls who are chasing him. Completely unbelievable, as she has no idea who he is; and therefore is letting a stranger in her car at night. Still, it was a cute scene.

Warning: Spoilers
Be Somebody is a 2015 film about a teenage pop-star's escape from his celebrity life and his developing relationship with a normal girl. I agree that the plot is quite cliché, but his film definitely brings a lot of meaning topics to the table. One significant difference between the two protagonists is their relationship with their parents. As the opening scene shows, Emily's parents are extremely indifferent; while Jordan's mother, also his manager, over-concerns. Even though the film extravagates Emily's parents' indifference, I must say that it is a worthy topic to be discussed. With the fast pace in current society and high pressure from nowadays workplace, modern people, not just parents, have grown a habit of indifference. Another intriguing topic that this movie has brought up is the celebrity pressure. Celebrity pressure has been a constant them in celebrity with non-famous people Rom com. This film is interesting because it is a teen movie about teenage celebrities. The other teenage movies such as Another Cinderella Story, Hannah Montana and Camp Rock tend to focus more on the shiny, fun side of the celebrity life. This movie discusses celebrity's identity. One character says that "He is celebrity, so he is not real." There has been a constant discussion of celebrity's identity. Are they just fake images that are built to be worshiped? This movie gives a sneak peak of celebrity's real self when they are no longer on the media altar. This movie also again confirms that even as successful as Jordan, there is something he wants from normal people's life. The celebrity and non-famous Rom com genre works as a modern, more realistic fantasy. I have always look at films as a window for audience to fantasize and let go of reality. This film does it very well and at the same time discuss realistic problems in modern family and in celebrities' image. There are parallel between this film and a 1999 film Notting Hill (Of course, this film is far not as good). Even though both film discuss the pressure and the downside of being celebrity, they also show the power a celebrity has. I think Be Somebody is a film worth notice.

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this film on Netflix on a Sunday night. I watched it instead of studying and thought it was adorable and I was very into it and I had already started making plans on watching it again. Not only was the famous guy supes relatable, but the loser chick was too. It was the perfect mix, like peanut butter and jelly. u feel? but im still really mad and wouldn't recommend this for people who are looking for the PERFECT ending, because that is exactly what this movie does not have. the sexual tension in the bedroom scene was R E A L and it made me angry nothing sprouted from that scene. How did he postpone a tokyo tour to go to prom. wtf. they didn't even kiss

Basic fun teenage romance?
AscendeSuperius14 August 2022
It's perfectly mediocre, with a classic teenage romance trope between a 'pop' kid and a regular kid. Even so, it's a good form of escapism from everyday life.

Predictable and worst acting I've ever witnessed
ellafletcher119 June 2016
This film is so predictable; you can guess the ending from the very first five minutes. You can even guess the dialogue. It is the most cliché film I've ever seen and I also noticed that it completely steals scenes and dialogue from other films. Matthew Espinosa's acting is some of the worst in history and I would definitely advise he keeps his day job...I'm guessing this will be his first and last film. Being a fan of awful romantic films like this, I'm used to predictability and performances that aren't award worthy, yet I wouldn't even watch this film if someone paid me and I don't want anyone else to suffer like I did.

This film is very awkward, I'd suggest it if you are having trouble sleeping.

Warning: Spoilers
Honestly I don't know why this was even made in the first place the two leads have no chemistry whatsoever, the acting was disgraceful, Emily (Sarah Jeffery) didn't seem to bad but she would probably be better in theater, now on to Jordan (Matthew Espinosa) a huge reason this film was probably even made his 'acting' was by far the worst thing in the film it somehow managed to be worse than the dreadful plot I don't know how he stuffed up such a simple character to play but he did he brought down his co-stars performance and everything felt so forced it was honestly hard to watch.

The story line was about as cliché and mediocre as they get, everything was predictable the romance was underwhelming as they did nothing not even a kiss (but honestly the actors would probably have messed that up to) other than that there wasn't really anything that exciting the whole film just seemed like it was a message which overall wasn't to bad it's the delivery of that message which was terrible.

Overall the message was fine I'm more surprised how bad the actors were in such a simple role especially Matthew who wants to be 'one of the greats' which is quite laughable since he is a horrendous actor(which I shouldn't even call him an actor as he's not worthy of the title) the only reason this film is a thing was because of his internet popularity he should stick to the internet and please don't do anymore movies cause if he even gets a glimpse of the real Hollywood they will laugh at his 'acting'

Read this review, you won't regret it. If you do, tell your friend to read it.
polly-blythe28 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Coming from a person who has watched a lot of rom-coms, this is by far the worst I have ever seen. I watched it and subsequently made my friend watch it also, so we could laugh about how bad it was. Our judgment was not only based on the non-existent plot, but also on the extremely poor acting which added the comedy aspect to this neutral film. On top of this, this is simply just a poor attempt at replicating the film Starstruck, which is far far better. If your thinking of watching this film, I'd recommend you just watch Starstruck instead, or bang you head against a brick wall for an hour and 27 minutes, because that would probably be a better experience than watching this dreadful film. However, if you are in the mood to watch this with a friend and make fun of how awful it is, then go ahead because that's what we did and it was quite fun. Don't listen to the people who say it is good because they are deluded, don't waste an hour and 27 minutes of your life watching this when you could spend that time doing something worthwhile, for example baking a cake. In a nutshell, we are teenage girls who love any sort of rom-com, but if this film cannot even be tolerated by us, then I don't know who it can be tolerated by. However, if Zac Efron had played the lead boys role, we would have know complaints. Jordan Jaye's gelled back hair at the end really didn't do it for us - he looked like a tadpole going to a dinner party. The whole time you think you're watching a romance blossom, but at the end you realise you've just been watching a guy who looks like a tadpole and a pizza delivery girl be friends for an hour and 27 minutes. Do seventeen year olds not even kiss anymore? LAUGHINGLY AWFUL.

Cheesy Young Romance Movie -With Something to Say that Speaks to the Viewer
HansenKid10 June 2016
It might just be the mood I'm in, or the fact that I've been up so late tonight, but this movie made me feel something more than the average teen romance movie has in a long time. I chose to watch this movie tonight because it happened to be uploaded onto my preferred streaming site just today, and it looked like something I could watch without really having to focus on it. While it definitely wasn't the kind of movie that required you to watch every minute of it, I still found myself pausing it every time I had to go out of ear shot. Something about this quiet film, with its very straightforward plot and unembellished characters, is just different enough to make it impactful. It reminded me that the best films are ones you don't have any expectations about at all. You don't see them coming. The acting is a little underwhelming, but it isn't a film that really asks for too much from the actors to begin with. It manages to accomplish it's goal of entertaining, without trying to be something more. Because of that, it left me feeling perfectly content. Sometimes, that's all I want from a film.

Badly Remake Version
ellecfinn18 April 2020
Obvious remake of StarStruck in the beginning of both the movie trailer and the movie. Everything was vey predictable since they made it pretty much IDENTICAL to StarStruck movie. Sitting through and watching this movie was it not only painful due to it being a bad remake but also how obvious it's that they tried so hard. Which only lead it to be very cringe worthy and only dragging out its message throughout most of the movie making it exhausting. It has all the traits of a basic remake rom-com but makes so badly it's almost that they made it to be a horrible parody of StarStruck

Um no sweaty
camillee-619314 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The plot was super basic and the actor for Jordan simply had no emotion. The scenes were awkward and misplaced. The message could've been better delivered but overall that was pretty okay. I started watching the movie hoping to see the perfect ending but there was absolutely no build up. First of all, how did nobody recognize him other than in the beginning if Jordan is so "famous?" The camera work was jumbled and the effects were not used correctly. The black screens at the end were misleading and they didn't even kiss at the end. Wtf. The entire movie was misleading and a waste of time. Way too predictable.

awful acting by Espinoza
gursimranvim22 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I got 30 minutes into it and i couldn't watch it anymore. Espinoza lacked very much acting wise and often made me cringe when he said things. Although the plot of the story is refreshing the acting wasn't up to par. However, compared to his castmate, Sarah Jeffrey was much better acting wise. Espinoza lacked facial expression and his voice often felt monotonous and boring. Sometimes he would prolong and stretch out some words to make things different but it still made it seem somewhat awkward. And when he did try to add some oomf it often seemed fake and forced or could have been helped with some sound. For example, the scene where Jordan confront Emily's enemy, the sarcasm would have been better with more facial emotion/sarcasm, and could have been helped with some bounce in the background like a 'hopping' tack, that would emphasize sarcasm and make the encounter less awkward and silent , and more funny.

Similar to Starstruck
villalobosmeli20 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie seemed interesting as I started watching it. It was so predictable because it was identical to the movie Starstruck with Sterling Knight and Danielle Campbell.

I enjoyed it because it demonstrated a life of a typical teenager and the life of a celebrity, but a lot of the scenes we're similar to Starstruck. It took me back to that movie while watching this movie and just seeing the similarities. Other than that it's a great movie for people interested in romance (like me).

Some of the scenes really got me thinking because they were poetic with a really deep meaning. That's what made me more interested in the movie.

would've thought that it was a Starstruck parody bc of how stupid it is.
joumanaelsheikh22 February 2019
For starters, i love watching cringey predictable rom coms just to mock them with my friends, so i'm very used to seeing bad storylines and cliches. BUT THIS.. this just goes way beyond. Ok so if ur reading this then u probably read the other reviews saying that the plot was technically non-existent, it was too predictable and unoriginal, and the acting doesnt even help. But i just have a little something to add to this list. I literally kept on fast forwarding the entire movie because of how poorly made the scenes were, they were way too boring like i actually couldnt get myself to continue an entire scene without zoning out. They have this entire "artsy, edgy, and deep" vibe going on which i get, cuz there are literally 1 million other movies that did this before, but the way this movie executed it made it look like they were being awful on purpose, as if its a goddamn parody or something. There was a scene where they literally spent an entire 3 minutes (the length of a freaking song) just walking in slow motion and not talking at all, hoping it would add a bit of "deep". Needless to say, they failed. They were trying so hard to deliver this message that they literally stretched out most of the scenes for too long that no one can even listen to what they're saying anymore and just hope they move on to the next scene. Overall, this was officially the worst way I've ever wasted my time.

Nearly a good movie but doesn't go anywhere
emilyjmalbon13 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I chose this movie because I wanted to watch a romance that didn't require too much attention...so I knew what I was letting myself in for. The plot is basic but still caught my interest: a pop star meets a normal girl in a small town and they start to have feelings for each other. The trouble is....that literally is it. To me, it never gets going. They do some fun stuff around town together and they keep in touch afterwards, the end. I really wanted the romance to get going but they don't even kiss and they really had no chemistry at all. I think a big part of the problem was the boy who plays the pop star. He is so one dimensional and, in my opinion, simply not good looking enough to play the part of mega star teen heart throb. He looks like someone's little brother - zero sex appeal. BUT I am a 26 year old woman so I don't think this film was aimed at someone like me anyway!! It's a nice enough, innocent film, If you're 13, you will like it.

Not that good at all
alicia-olofsson12 May 2018
Saw the whole movie and I'm not impressed. Terrible acting from Espinosa and the shooting was awful. Shaky and not professional at all, It is similar to Starstruck in the way that they kind of copied scenes from the movie. Couldn't they come up with something else?

Jordan is also very similar to Justin Bieber and Emily to Selena. Why is that, it's so weird.

I can't really recommend it, it's not that bad that you can't watch it but it's far from good!

Lovely teen movie with a message
issisotelo28 May 2017
When I watched this movie's trailer I thought this was a copy of Starstruck, that DCOM where the main characters meets a pop superstar that she hates and after sharing some time together they got a love connection. Does that sounds like this movie? Yes. Is that 100% true? No. "Be Somebody" is more than a movie with a girl meeting a pop superstar and falling in love to each other. In this movie I watched two young artists trying to find themselves with the other one's help. For me, it was a very slow plot but that didn't make stop watching it. The message is there since the first scene. It's also a movie that you can have fun watching it. Definitely something you should watch in a free time just to have a good time and a little dose of inspiration.

Over Produced
mariekhaze20 November 2022
I see what they tried to do but it was overly done. Tried to make it super artsy with the production, overly drawn out scenes with shaky camera and too much music. Overly drawn out moments of nothing with an expectation of something to come from it but mostly just done to create something cool visually. The direction and production just failed on an easily shot teen love drama trying to make nothing into something.

Over all, the acting wasn't bad. Espinosa didn't do terribly for his first film. I thought Jeffery was good. A little to many typical eye rolls but not bad. I just didn't feel their connection though the majority of the movie was overly done to make us feel the connection when it should have come from the acting alone. It's a cute movie though. I didn't hate it.

Great!!
divina-mariafernanda3 October 2016
It was a great movie, really cheered me up and made me laugh a lot. Makes you think about life, if you pay close attention the movie has a meaning behind it so I think the title really fits it. The actors look like they really put their all in it to make the movie more enjoyable for the audience and it really worked. The plot is great honestly, I loved this movie so much I can't out it into words! This is now one of my favorite movie, I love it! It reminded me of "starstruck" BUT THATS MY ONE OF MY FAVES TOO SO THAT MADE ME LOVE IT EVEN MORE!!! but i'm super proud of everyone in it and specially Matthew since it was his first movie, can't wait for more to come!

Good Escape
glitterglitz244 October 2016
I completely agree with the other review. I picked this movie because it seemed like something whimsy that didn't need all my attention. But, like the other review also states, I found myself pausing it when I needed to step away and would rewind if I missed something. There were a couple of slow parts and I think you notice them because most movies have a lot more action. Whereas this movie just told a story with a really basic message. Even though it's a teen movie I think the message transcends to any age. You need to see the whole thing to understand why it is good, and after you watch it you think about. The movie left me hopeful. Feels weird but I don't hate it.

I took off one star due to a couple awkward scenes that have been over played in all movie plots.

Amazingly good!
bmthnicolelawson14 October 2016
This movie was better than what I expected! They should definitely make a second part! I want to know what happens when he comes off tour and if they get into a relationship or not! Matt did an excellent job at acting and I really think he should start doing it. Very pleased with this movie. 10/10. If they make a second movie I would love to see more about Jordans life and more from his point of view. The movie is basically a fan girls fan fiction come to life and yes I did fan girl a little not going to lie , but I would honestly love to see a second part to this movie. If you haven't watched it , go watch it , you won't be let down! And if you're from the UK and want to watch it , they have put it on Netflix.

Best Movie I've seen this year!
gnorkensmorken14 October 2016
No amount of words can express how amazing this movie is. I love the fact that the scenes are so well done and you can tell that they really thought about what to put in the movie. Also, the actors fit their roles well. The concepts brought up in the movie were really refreshing to see and it was just really unique and cool. I love the philosophical aspect of the movie too. The pacing of the movie was interesting too because it wasn't as fast paced as most modern movies are and it worked well for the type of movie it was. There are so many other fantastic things about the movie as well, but you should go watch it for yourself to find out more about it. If there is a sequel to this I will definitely watch!

Lightweight but enjoyable teen romance
llsee22 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
If you, like me, are sick of the constant barrage of CGI laden fantasy killer thrillers that seem to be common in today's movie world, this is a pleasant little respite that features some character development and human interaction. I'm not sure why there is so much animosity towards this film. I found it to be an enjoyable if light weight film to watch. One criticism is the film is predictable. Well, it is a lightweight romantic not quite rom-com. By definition those are predictable. Have you ever seen one that isn't? And the acting of the two young leads is very good. I found them both to be appealing and to have a chemistry that made there interactions believable. Maybe the thing that bothers some reviewers the most is that there is no drama. Neither character is facing a 'life or death' trauma. It is just two young people examining the life choices they have made and will eventually need to make.

If I have any criticisms to level, it is that for teenagers, these two seem to have the maturity level of 40 year-olds. And there lives are really too ideal. Emily's parents are too good to be real, and even Jordan's 'momager' shows a surprising mellow attitude. Oh, and any resemblance to that cookie-cutter, made-for-TV 'Starstruck' is superficial at best!

Authentic Independent Romance Movie
tabuno12 January 2019
3 October 2016. Finally a refreshing romance movie that isn't a knockoff of predictable, over the top romance comedy movies. This crisp and underplayed teen romance ironic genre has the photographic technique and ambiance of an independent movie more focused on the performance and storyline than on the corny mainstream manners that underlie most teen romantic comedies.

Be Somebody has the teen pop star much more down to earth and seemingly sincere in the depiction of a boy whose life is not his own. The unknown teen artist on the other hand has a pretty every girl face that isn't a gorgeous model. There is a nice seriousness to this movie with overtones of humor in the irony between star and artist.

This movie one of the most appealing in its sincerity and natural performances to come along in a romance movie in years.
