Season 2 Review
IPyaarCinema8 June 2021
Review By Kamal K

Not many shows in television history have put martial arts front and center to this degree, but "Into the Badlands" has stood out against the crowd since the very beginning. The series, created by Al Gough and Miles Millar and directly inspired by classic samurai films like "Yojimbo" and "Harakiri," depicts a bleak universe centuries in the future, where the survivors struggle in a bloody feudalistic landscape.

Best way to survive? Be totally awesome at martial arts, like reformed assassin Sunny (Daniel Wu) and the many other unique characters who occupy this brutal land.

As dense as the mythology surrounding the show might be, "Into the Badlands" oftentimes uses it merely as a backdrop to the beautiful violence on display.

Due to the events of last season, the core ensemble is largely scattered to the winds, but in some cases this gives the characters some quite welcome focus. Sunny, for example, lacked much in the way of drive at the beginning of Season 1, but now his quest to return to his lover and child gives his narrative real energy. And M. K. (Aramis Knight) is now not just seeking to understand the source of his mysterious powers, but use them to relocate his mother.

Not only do the early episodes of the season play up some deliciously "Mad Max"-esque weirdness, but visually, the locations this season also get a major upgrade thanks to the production's relocation from New Orleans to Ireland, bringing some rich greenery to the show's palette that makes its already striking use of color stand out even more.

Another major change to the series is the addition of just a little more levity than before, courtesy of Nick Frost ("Shaun of the Dead") as a new ally for Sunny. His particular brand of quick wit and physical ability makes him a perfect fit for the show's oddball tone, which also finds moments of humor in the below-the-line details. From the extravagant costumes to the imaginative sets - like a mining facility devoted to unearthing lost artifacts of the past, and a lair built in the wreckage of an abandoned train station - there's a lot to appreciate on screen.

Meanwhile, "Badlands" is a wilde rich adventure in every respect, while also engaging with big themes about what it means to be a good person in a terrible world. And it does it with a beautiful and blood-soaked style all its own.

How did they kill Zombie Quinn???
garabedian1237 March 2022
Seriously...How?

Ok so it a pretty good season finale even if they did miss several good plot points. They never did anything with the tumor..Even though they could have actually healed it since there are you know healing powers.. And if the wife was killed by the outlander guy chasing after Sunny...then that would have really tied into what Nathaniel said about keeping away from her to keep her alive.

But still really enjoyable. Even the laughable ending. Because it was hilarious..

Surviving Two Sword Thrusts Was Over The Top!
RJupiter225 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As far fetched as these fighting scenarios are, they are fun to watch so many bad people killed in seconds! Yet the fight scene between Sunny and Quinn (surviving two sword thrusts) pushed the envelope to extreme unbelievablity! I was yelling at the TV "Sunny chop off his head, chop off his head" knowing without a doubt Quinn would rise again to kill one of them! The writers really lost my enthusiasim with this final episode! Now will watch with far lesser likeablity!

awesome just awesome
sregts22 May 2017
The creators of this show chose a difficult path by putting all these genres together in one show. So to make it work is an awesome job by the whole cast! Into the badlands might not be for everyone but if you have an open mind and if you enjoy martial art this show will give you goosebumps!! The acting is sometimes called over the top as are the visuals but I think it is balanced into perfection. The finale is everything that it should be it's really a rock solid performance from all the actors, I mean if a fantasy show can give you a reality check...well yeah it is this awesome!!!

I do not want to spoil your fun..So if you are wondering if you should start watching this TV show it is best to do it in the weekend so you can binge-watch it because stopping is not an option!!

It really is an awesome show and an even better season, I can not wait for what comes next!

Marton Csokas May Be The Greatest Villain Ever
Pete_Falina10 July 2017
"Into The Badlands" is fantastic video entertainment. Superbly cast, written, directed and produced. The Ireland filming locations are astounding. Everybody associated with the show deserves the highest praise! I just wanted to give an extra shout-out to Marton Csokas in the role of Quinn. He is mesmerizing, and when he has the focus, he doesn't let up for a second. I delighted in his performance in Season 1, at the end of which he was apparently killed. I was totally thrilled to have him back again, in Season 2. The man is fantastic!

Spectacular
wiseguy-tr9 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have been thinking a lot about what had attracted me towards Into the Badlands series. The story line? No. The acting? No. They are all very standard..Or was it the martial arts? Not really, as today's most Hong Kong movies are in the same kind of standard. It's the ambiance, the brilliance of the details, music, costumes and locations that were filmed. In this episode it really had been breath taking.

Apart from that, there are really ridiculous scenes too. I mean while Sunny is getting shot by 2x burning arrows, being crushed under heavy concrete, getting stabbed two times and the guy just walks away, whilst Gale gets stabbed once and off she goes on the spot. WTF? Couldn't the scenarists find some better way to opt her out ? Is this all your creativity ? Plus to the fact that Sunny furiously chops away anyone in his way on the way to reach is family and right in the end leaves Quinn to be ? Weak story line strikes again !

Season Two Review
southdavid21 April 2021
I watched season one of "Into The Badlands" towards then end of 2020. I thought it was a bit silly, but didn't outstay it's welcome at only 6 episodes. I was concerned that an increase to ten episodes for the second season wasn't a wise choice and though I didn't find the series too be bad, it's already reusing plot points to fill it's extended running time.

Cast out of the Badlands, Sunny (Daniel Wu) is sold into slavery, where he meets Bajie (Nick Frost). Though initially antagonistic, the pair become friends when they discover they have a common goal, to re-enter the Badlands. M. K (Aramis Knight) has fallen in with a society of people who have the same power that he does, they begin to experiment with controlling it. The Widow (Emily Beecham) continues to crusade against the other Baron's but makes a controversial alliance.

There are positives, plenty of them. Nick Frost is a fun addition to the cast and his characters friendship with Sunny and MK is fun - though there's always the undercurrent that he has his own agenda and can't fully be trusted. Daniel Wu is still a compelling lead - the fight choreography and wirework is still excellent and the gore and splatter appealing. Marin Csokas returns as Quinn, not as dead as previously thought and still chewing every inch of scenery he can get near.

But the plot gets very circular, very quickly. Alliances are formed and then broken, occasionally in the same episode. Lots of the characters motivations are unclear, certain plot points are abandoned and that general sense of campy nonsense never goes away. It does not bode well for the third and final season that has even more episodes at 16. - But I'm engaged enough with the show that I'm going to watch those too. We'll see how I get on.

Last fight scene bloody terrible
cassyryda25 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, I have enjoyed this series until in the last fight scene! Quinn survives two sword thrusts that go completely through his torso and then dies from a Sais that only has an inch or two left to impale him after Veil thrusts it through herself!! Lost all credibility at that moment, even allowing for artistic license. Leading up to that point the number of times the characters didn't 'finish the job' by ensuring their nemesis' were actually dead, became farcical. The producers just tried to cram to much in and spoiled it. Disappointing.

Ridiculous
lovejr0720 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I will start by saying I have never seen so many plot holes in a single episode of any show. That was a ridiculous end to a pretty decent season with some interesting storylines. Those storylines were leading to what could have been a great finale. Instead, this episode made the whole season faceplant before the finish line. I'll say this...with all these highly trained killers, how do so many decide to not simply finish their enemies while they are down? In the last battle scene, three people are unconscious after losing a fight just to wake up and kill a main character. After blowing up a guy or dicing at least 20 henchmen, why couldn't any character make sure their nemesis was truly dead? It was annoying when I started to predict a every stupid plot twist just to see it play out.

Someone wrote this and thought...sure that will work Warning: Spoilers
I genuinely enjoy this show most of the time. I love over the top fights. When a huge sword goes all the way through a characters chest, and the blade and location would make it impossible not to hit vital organs, and the guy keeps on fighting like...sure...ok. I'll deal with that one time....but to do it twice. Inside of a minute. And then to have him killed by getting scratched with a little needle of a weapon...it was so bad it made the whole show feel worse. I don't understand how someone wrote this, directed this, watched it in an editing booth, and thought: yea, that's season finale worthy. No problems there. As much as I'd hate to wish employment loss on anyone, someone needs to be fired for making this/letting it happen.

Laughable
onlinemail-8069623 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Sunny survives the bomb blast and falling concrete stabs, conveniently not being squashed. He then stabs Ryder twice through the body during their duel with his sword and Ryder still doesn't die?? How far fetched is that! Both Sunny and Veil are oblivious to the fact that Ryder is still alive after been stabbed through the body twice, even though he was lying only a few metres away from them. Why didn't the best killer (hahaha)in the Badlands, cut off Ryder's head, arms or legs? Conveniently scripted for the crappy predictable plot ending to season 2. Then one true love sacrifices her life for her man and kid cliché.

An outlived welcome, jumping the shark, & over the top all in one episode
yossarian-6788721 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
As I watched the last episode of the second season, I couldn't help but think "The first season was so much better than this." which is very weird because in TV series, the first season is usually the worst.

The biggest problem is the abandonment of any believability. From Sunny surviving the unsurvivable frontal assault on Quinn's men with hardly a scratch, Tilda's being mostly 'fine' after coming within an inch of death at the hands of her mother, to Quinn's surviving being skewered TWICE by Sunny, it was pretty terrible to be honest. Like another reviewer, I was like "Sunny, just chop his fracking head off already! If anyone deserves a decapitation, it's Quinn!!!"

Another thing that pissed me off is that M.K.'s character was left basically on autopilot for most of the season, plus they removed his power. Ugh, it was always a source of tension wondering when/if he would get cut and the mad possessed killing machine released.

New low
teutonfirst23 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So Queen blast Sunny but didn't go to finish the job, a blast that destroys concrete at just a few meters away of Sunny did not kill him, and even if he got bolted twice, he still fights like a mofo and kills bad guys by the dozen, then fights Queen, gets knocked out twice and guess what, Queen doesn't finish the job and gets clipped once all the way from the back to the shoulders with the blade of 10 cm wide, that doesn't stop him to fight even better, lemme tell you what a wound like that means, bleeding to death, not to be able to move half of the body cause of the lost of blood, swelling, pain and physically impossible, but he gets cut again, stabbed again in the chest and this mofo has the guts not to die, but even to seize Vale and hold her with a knife at her throat then dies when the knife thing only scratches his skin. I'm rofl at the moment when there is dramatic music in the background. Even the child who doesn't understands much is smiling. That ridiculous, illogical, dumb-ed down this show has become. Dear Mr. Frost you made a name working with Simon Pegg as a class actor, don't waste it in this below B grade series. Cheers!

Worst episode
akaalmodova3 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly I'm not even sad about Veil because I really disliked her character. But the whole episode and ending fight scene was literally just the dumbest thing. Incredibly sloppy writing, to the point it just made no sense. Like they just wanted Veil to die some tragic way. So they didn't have sunny actually kill Quin, which after as many kills as sunny has had, you'd think he'd know how to properly kill someone. Not to mention Veils wound wouldn't have killed her that fast. Just...holy cow one of the worst episodes of a show I've ever watched.
