As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

No one said growing up is easy. Beyond peer pressure, raging hormones, and perpetual uncertainty, family loyalty is often a struggle as you prepare to forge your path forward through life. In Momentum Pictures‘ Wildflower trailer, Bea Johnson (Kiernan Shipka) wrestles with remaining close to her neurodivergent parents while deciding her future away from the nest she calls home.
According to the film’s official synopsis, Wildflower is a hilarious, big-hearted celebration of family in all its variety. Shipka stars alongside Dash Mihok, Charlie Plummer, Alexandra Daddario, Brad Garrett, Reid Scott, and Erika Alexander in the coming-of-age film about growing up too fast and slowing down enough to recognize one’s good fortune. In addition to the cast mentioned above, Wildflower introduces Samantha Hyde with Jacki Weaver and Jean Smart.

May will satisfy “Stranger Things” fans everywhere as it delivers Netflix’s hotly-anticipated fourth season of the sci-fi thriller series hailing from the Duffer brothers. However, the streamer’s also getting rid of other shows — most notably, all six seasons of the Emmy-winning “Downton Abbey” and Seasons 1-3 of the Damon Wayans Jr.-starring sitcom “Happy Endings.”
The month will also see the removal of several films, including cult classics like Denise Richards’ erotic thriller “Wild Things” and the Zack Snyder-helmed “Sucker Punch.” “Top Gun” — the long-awaited sequel of which is coming to theaters May 27 — will also go.
Other movies leaving the platform range from horror fares (“The Final Destination” and “The Devil’s Advocate”) to family-friendly pics (“Happy Feet” and “Hairspray”).
Check out the full list of titles leaving Netflix this month below:

Exclusive: Samantha Mathis and Norm Lewis and are set as series regulars opposite Matt Passmore and Floriana Lima in Blank Slate, NBC’s drama pilot from Dean Georgaris, John Fox, Davis Entertainment and Universal Television.
Created by Georgaris and Fox, written by Georgaris and to be directed by Richard Shepard, Blank Slate draws some parallels to Davis Entertainment’s long-running NBC series The Blacklist. In Blank Slate, Special Agent Alexander McCoy (Passmore) is a legend in law enforcement, the agent we all hope is out there, the agent we’d all like to be. The only issue is — he doesn’t actually exist. He’s a ghost, a phantom. So what happens when a man claiming to be Alexander McCoy walks through the door with all of his skills and knowledge but with an agenda nobody will see coming?
Mathis will play Dr. Sylvia Matthews, the team’s forensic psychologist.

“The Crown” star and recent Emmy winner Josh O’Connor and “Normal People” BAFTA winner Paul Mescal will star in gay romance “The History of Sound,” an Oliver Hermanus-directed adaptation of an award-winning short story.
Produced by End Cue, the story follows two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), who, during the WW1 period, set out to record the lives, voices and music of their countrymen. An official description of the pic reads: “In this snatched, short-lived moment in their young lives, and while discovering the epic sweep of the U.S., both men are deeply changed.”
“The History of Sound” is based on the eponymous Pushcart Prize-winning story by American author Ben Shattuck, which is available to read online in literary journal The Common. CAA Media Finance will handle U.S. sales while Embankment will introduce the project to international buyers ahead of next week’s virtual American Film Market.

Scream Factory’s slate of Blu-ray releases continues to expand in all directions, from recent indie releases to beloved cult favorites to the movie classic and esoteric, as evidenced by several of its recent offerings. Here are just three new Scream Factory titles that represent the breadth of the company’s constantly growing catalogue.
The Clovehitch Killer: First up is 2018’s The Clovehitch Killer, a serial killer drama from IFC midnight starring Dylan McDermott as a geeky suburban dad whose teenage son (Charlie Plummer) has begun to suspect he might be a serial killer. If that sounds a little like IFC’s I Am Not a Serial Killer from a few years back, that’s because the movies have a lot in common—though, without spoiling either one, I will say that Clovehitch is missing some of the other film’s more outlandish plot developments. More a drama than a traditional horror movie,...

After writing the DVD Obscura column for years at Movies.com, TheWrap’s Film Reviews Editor Alonso Duralde brings it to its new home. In an age where niche and classic movies are harder and harder to find via traditional streaming services, it’s still worth maintaining a collection of physical media that can’t disappear from the internet (or even from your own online library). Each month, Duralde highlights new DVD, Blu-ray and 4K releases in six categories: Indie, Foreign, Documentary, Grindhouse, Classics and TV.

A haunting coming-of-age tale that's as heartbreaking as it is horrifying, The Clovehitch Killer is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on March 5th alongside another IFC Midnight movie, the occult film Welcome to Mercy (written by and starring Kristen Ruhlin).

The Clovehitch Killer - Tyler Burnside is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad. Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives in: the unsolved murders — in which ten women were brutally tortured and killed by a psychopath known as Clovehitch — that rocked the community more than a decade ago. A haunting coming-of-age tale that's as heartbreaking as it is horrifying, The Clovehitch Killer strips away the cheerful veneer of one small town American family to show the sinister secrets that sometimes hide in the most innocent places. Simply put, The Clovehitch Killer is one of 2018's must-watch movies, and to celebrate the film's release today in select theaters and On Demand and Digital HD from IFC Midnight, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with director Duncan Skiles for our latest Q&A to discuss working with Charlie Plummer and Dylan McDermott, realistically depicting small-town life, and making the transition from comedy to horror.
Congratulations on The Clovehitch Killer, Duncan. This is a tremendously told story about life in a small town and the deadly secrets that sometimes live there. When you first read Christopher Ford’s screenplay, what made you decide that you wanted to bring...

Samantha Mathis has quickly become one of my favorite actors to talk to: she’s receptive, thoughtful and still very much invested in the work she’s doing in the genre space. For this week’s review round-up, it’s a foursome! The quartet of titles today are a real mixed bag, which happens. We have two misfires, one mild recommendation, and a mixed bag that I really hemmed and hawed about in terms of a thumbs up or thumbs down. You’ll see which are which shortly, but the four films are the Vincent van Gogh biopic At Eternity’s Gate, the horror hybrid The Clovehitch Killer, the science fiction tinged psychological drama Jonathan, and the documentary The Last Race. These movies are very different, to say the least. The only thing they have in common? Well, that would be that I’m about to discuss them all right now… Here we go: — At Eternity’s Gate At one early stage in the game, At Eternity’s Gate seemed like a potentially big Academy Award player. Some high profile film festival debuts,...

Duncan Skiles’ new thriller The Clovehitch Killer is the kind of horror movie that gets under your skin and stays there, reverberating in the viewer’s head for hours, days, even weeks after it’s over. Its impact is all the more impressive given its low-key, understated quality. Skiles patiently, meticulously creates a mounting sense of dread without melodrama or explicit violence, relying instead on eerily stark, formal compositions and a career-best performance from Dylan McDermott. McDermott plays Don Burnside, a family man and active member of his community whose affable, slightly goofy façade masks a serious dark side. When Don’s teenage […]...

Don Burnside (Dylan McDermott) is a pillar of his community. He’s the troop leader of his son’s (Charlie Plummer’s Tyler) church-adjacent Boy Scouts, a devout man of the Lord alongside his wife Cindy (Samantha Mathis), and the type of guy to go out of his way to volunteer and make the neighborhood a better place. So we laugh when the town’s resident eccentric teen (Madisen Beaty’s Kassi), carrying a mark of “whore” around simply because she’s an atheist among cultish worshippers needing a reason to denounce the “other,” asks Tyler if he thinks his father is the serial murderer known as The Clovehitch Killer. She laughs too. That guy? The doofy dad-of-the-year who cracks lame jokes and can barely keep a straight face when reprimanding misbehaving children? No.

A trailer has been released for a new serial killer thriller called The Clovehitch Killer, which tells the story of a young man who starts to suspect his dad is a serial killer after coming across some unsettling evidence while rummaging through his dad’s shed.
The movie looks like it’s going to be pretty intense as the boys dad starts to suspect his son is on to him. I imagine that this story isn’t going to end well for anyone. The movie stars Charlie Plummer (from Lean on Pete, The Dinner, All the Money in the World) as the boy Tyler and Dylan McDermott as his dad. Here’s the synopsis:
Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad (Dylan McDermott). Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives...

IFC Midnight will release the horror thriller The Clovehitch Killer. This film stars Dylan McDermott as a potential serial killer, discovered by his young son. This title had its World Premiere at the La Film Festival, where it was mostly positively reviewed. Now, The Clovehitch Killer is set to show in theatres and on Digital platforms, this November. This suspenseful thriller also stars Charlie Plummer as the son, along with: Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty and Brenna Sherman. The film's first trailer is available here. Dennis Harvey, at Variety, has already reviewed the film. He says of the film's narrative structure: "the movie takes a structural risk, diverging from its hitherto straightforward chronology to backtrack and re-tell part of the story from a different perspective." The Clovehitch Killer does not play out as one might expect. Harvey also mentions that this is nearly a bloodless film and not really for the horror crowd.

"Every man has a secret," and some of them are deadly. Raised in a seemingly loving, albeit confining, family, Tyler's (Charlie Plummer) image of his dad is shattered when he finds something disturbing in his truck... and then the shed. The innocent days of coupon cutting and campouts take a deadly turn in IFC Midnight's official trailer for The Clovehitch Killer, starring Dylan McDermott in a truly chilling role.
Directed by Duncan Skiles from a screenplay he co-wrote with Christopher Ford, The Clovehitch Killer stars Dylan McDermott, Charlie Plummer, Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty, Brenna Sherman, and Lance Chantiles-Wertz. IFC Midnight will release the film in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD platforms on November 16th.

At one point or another, many teenagers might believe their parents are somehow evil. Mostly, it’s a hyperbolic thought that springs to mind after your parents take away your phone privileges or deny you the right to go to a party. But in the case of Tyler and his dad in the film “The Clovehitch Killer,” there might be something more sinister below the surface.

"I don't think he stopped killing..." IFC has released the first official trailer for a serial killer horror thriller titled The Clovehitch Killer, from director Duncan Skiles, which originally premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival this year. This "chilling portrait of all-American evil" is about a picture-perfect family that's shattered when the work of a serial killer hits too close to home. Charlie Plummer stars as Tyler, a Boy Scout who discovers evidence and begins to suspect his own dad, a respectable family man and community leader, of secretly being a serial killer known as the "Clovehitch Killer." The title is a reference to the clove hitch knot, a fairly useful knot taught in Boy Scouts. Also starring Dylan McDermott, Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty, Brenna Sherman, and Lance Chantiles-Wertz. This trailer alone sends chills down my spine, it looks like a very creepy thriller. Here's the first official ...

Ever since their integration into pop culture during the ‘70s, America’s morbid obsession with the deranged inner-demons and manifested violence of serial killers has only grown over the decades. Directors like David Fincher have obsessively carried the torch of this fascination for years and independent entities and filmmakers alike have followed suit. This texture brings us to director Duncan Skiles’ latest project, the seemingly Fincher-inspired “The Clovehitch Killer.” A concept which emerged from Skiles’ brief but intense obsession with serial killers a few years back, “The Clovehitch Killer” is a chilling and conflicting portrait of a mid-America tragedy enhanced by familial dramatics.

There’s nary a drop of blood, but a squirm factor of 10 to much of “The Clovehitch Killer.” This first theatrical feature for director Duncan Skiles, working from a strong screenplay by his past collaborator Christopher Ford, treads familiar ground in eking suspense from the viewpoint of a child who realizes a parent may have a sinister secret life. But this atypical serial-killer thriller distinguishes itself in resisting thrills — let alone any actual violence — till well past its halfway point, instead maximizing the quiet discomfort in a son’s rising suspicion that his outwardly Dagwood-type dad could be a notorious murderer. IFC Midnight plans simultaneous limited-theatrical and digital-formats release of the La Film Festival-premiered film on Nov. 18.
