Director Gus Van Sant originally planned to make this movie in the 1990s, with Robin Williams starring as John Callahan.
Beth Ditto, who plays Reba, is another Portland, OR resident. Although born in Arkansas she became famous in the UK for leading the band Gossip and being an outspoken champion of gay rights. She disbanded Gossip to pursue other interests including acting, fashion and her own solo music career.
This movie is based on a true story about John Callahan, who wrote and sang the song which can be heard during the end credits called "Texas when you go."
