How did this get left on the shelf of ITV3?
trevor-273-9415142 January 2019
Although the last episode became increasingly predictable, overall a very enjoyable series. Good acting and plot - well above average. How some of those reality programmes get prime time on the main ITV channel over this is beyond me.

A dark and compelling thriller
ronarimes16 December 2017
I had to review this after reading such a negative opinion. I watched the first episode with 4 other friends and we were all totally hooked. So much so that we continued to follow through, guessing only at the outcome. None of us predicted the final twists and that was what held our interest. The series was refreshingly different and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Good strong acting.

I actually liked the psychotic mare...

Warning: Spoilers
I liked it... Was dark, she was disturbingly creepy and freaky, (watchin her own son havin sex was just beyond ewwww) . But, i liked her, i liked the fact she was a total loon masquerading as a high rankin officer of the law. It's what made the show grippin and kept my interest. Cannot wait to see the next season to see if she gets out of her predicament and goes completely postal on those against her... Bancroft is completely unstable, yet a total control freak...a total villian. Bloomin brilliant.

Bancroft is a bad a##

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was pretty good. She was a ruthless, vicious copper. Where did she go bad? I was glad she got what was coming to her I watch mostly UK series and this is a pretty good one. I enjoyed it. Writing was solid as well as acting. Some far fetched stuff but over all a pretty darn good enjoyable series. kinda like Marcella on steroids.

Deep, Sharp and Vivid --- Bancroft is full of Potential
Harun_Karali11 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Bancroft has been on the force for twenty-seven years and is a respected officer of the law. But when her colleague starts digging up cold cases she has no idea that Bancroft has Skeleton's in her closet(literally). What starts out as a slow burning mystery quickly turns into a game of cat and mouse. What stood out was Sarah Parish's performance as Bancroft. The story reminded me a bit of Dexter, of course not on that level but still engaging enough to keep you occupied. The series has potential and if they can add some layers to the characters and add some emotional weight to the story, I can see a bright future for the series. That being said, the pacing is a big concern, I kept with it since I'm a fan of mystery, but I'm not certain everyone will. Bancroft is a grounded story about a cop who's in over her head and she's willing to do anything to keep her secret.

First episode
gleave-54-20984213 December 2017
I decided to watch this after reading a very negative review from someone who seems to have a hangup about women playing lead parts in crime series. Personally I found the first episode excellent - good story line, strong characters, highly competent acting, what's not to like?

Excellent Series
daviddunn-906536 October 2018
Wasnt expecting too much from this after reading some negative comments about it. Well, I have binge-watched all the episodes and my opinion is that is a very well made production, great acting and an ending that leaves the door wide open for a second series.

For all those who felt the ending was a let down, they have to realise there will be that second season to tie up all those loose ends. I will certainly be watching it.

Good cop mad cop
Lejink17 March 2020
Not your typical cop-show for sure. I came to this series expecting another hard-boiled, name-above-the-title Jane Tennyson-type senior female cop on the trail of another serial-killer perhaps with another even more unusual M.O. than usual, but didn't expect the twist that she herself might blur the lines between right and wrong. In that sense I was reminded of another top cop who sometimes seemed to cross that line at will, namely John Luthor, but Bancroft here seems to take things even further in that while you sensed that Luthor would occasionally not flinch from taking the law into his own hands it was always to pursue justice even if it was his own sometimes skewered version of it, Bancroft here however, while she undoubtedly gets results in her official capacity, is in fact only concerned with the welfare of herself and maybe her son, before any other legal consideration and heaven help anyone who gets in her way.

The highly contrived plot only got more incredible as it went on, the starting point being a 27 year old cold-case unsolved murder of a young wife and mother who just happened to be Bancroft's love rival for the man she's beaten her to and who is now pregnant into the bargain. Bancroft was first on the scene of the crime as a young WPC and she was the protege of the then senior investigating cop who's still alive today, but only just and who now really wants to crack the case before he expires. Not that he gets the chance as he dies in mysterious circumstances soon after Bancroft pays him a visit, just as a case is being built by the young female officer appointed by Bancroft's rival male DSI for the soon-to-become-available Chief Commissioner position, and her forensic female colleague. Both these young investigators suspect the almost unbelievable regarding the seemingly untouchable Bancroft who in between throwing her pursuers off the track, is trying to ensnare Public Enemy Number One, a ruthless Asian gun-runner not above torturing and indeed murdering members of his own family to keep everyone in line. These two plot strands then converge in a dramatic showdown as we finally learn the truth about Bancroft and the extent to which she'll go to protect herself.

I found the plotting to be ludicrously over-the-top, incredible coincidence succeeding incredible coincidence as it went, boosted in all of this by Sarah Parish's equally O.T.T performance as the title character who cold-bloodedly rampages around like she's just escaped from the set of "Westworld". All that said, it only stretched to four episodes keeping the action, ridiculous as it was, tight and fast-moving. "Line Of Duty" or "Happy Valley" it doesn't try to be but for a piece of escapist nonsense which doesn't try to keep even one toe, never mind a whole foot, in reality, it was certainly entertaining enough.

Has the author ever spoken to a police officer
dunks38810 September 2018
Well, let's disregard almost all police procedures, have senior officers all prepared to overlook the obvious, give one officer full sway or control over most all areas and enquiries and you've got Bancroft. What a huge disappointment.

One episode turns into four and any more?
KathleenK2211 December 2017
I noticed the overall score dropped so decided to review after watching one episode. It is exciting and intriguing. The acting is excellent particularly from the two female leads. Maybe one good cop and one bad cop? Nothing is definite though! Women have to prove themselves beyond what is expected of their male counterparts and this could affect their methods in trying to achieve their next rank in the police force. There is a main plot and at least two subplots but guessing they will all collide eventually. The writing is good and invites predictions from the viewers. An emphasis on female roles including a doctor of forensics who is also undervalued by one male colleague at least makes me suspect some female writer at work but then again it could be a male fighting the female cause. Many stories have been written about bad male cops so this could be also offering an alternative. The female of the species, after all, can be deadlier. Now watched the four episodes and still believe this is a good show. My one complaint is where is episode five or when is season two coming? I have questions that require answers. There should be a criteria for scoring as people giving this a one or a three is ridiculous. The acting was solid and I was not bored and the storyline with several plots kept me thinking. There were a variety of characters to be followed like the father and the boyfriend who was also the son of Bancroft. There is sufficient suspense to keep one entertained. It is not supposed to be an action piece so why expect that. It is thought provoking and layered enough to allow the viewer to fill in gaps and predict. It is at least seven out of ten.

Dont waste the electric bill on this
reidkenj27 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So utterly unbelievable. It would have been obvious to everyone that this police officer was very directly involved with not only victim, but just about everyone else. And when the retired detective dies, a day after being interviewed by a detective? Nothing!! Nothing suspicious there then!! The UK makes some great "Cop" shows. This is not one of them.

Series 2 a BIG improvement
mattman_spurs15 June 2020
I rated the 1st series of this a 5, but there is a night and day difference in the quality between the 2 seasons. I'm not sure the reason, but gone are the dodgy accents, the awfully miss-cast actors and actresses have been replaced by quality - Charlotte Hope in particular - that suit the role that's been written for them, and Sarah Parish has evolved brilliantly into the role - helped by a plot that stops trying to turn her into something she cannot be but instead allows her to fit into the role and show off her abilities.

The story Is moodily brilliant - shocking and gripping. It's all incredibly well done. There's still holes - it's not the best thing I've ever seen - Joe leaves a lot to be desired and some of Bancroft's antics remain too far from police policy to ever be deemed possible - but it's entirely watchable and enjoyable.

The biggest problem this show will have is that the first series is needed to be watched to fully understand the background of the story - and the first series is a complete and utter car crash. There will be a lot of people that will give up a long time before they've given the second series a chance. Which would be a real shame.

Mistakes & improbabilites
westsideschl10 June 2019
The series is unusual in that you are given the bad guys/gals fairly early on so no surprises; some of them are cops & solid citizens, and some are just plain bad. You're even given frequent flashbacks to fill in the 27 yr old crime scene that dominates the script so you just have to sit back & see how "good" wins out at the end. Problem is, in resolving this cold case crime we are given too many personality & cop mistakes & improbabilites - all scripted to keep the series going. So, if you don't mind the uncomfortable feeling of being left hanging while the baddies seemingly come out ahead, it's worth a watch.

Dark and powerful drama.
Sleepin_Dragon21 December 2017
I read that this show was switched from ITV Encore to mainstream ITV, and on paper it has all the makings of a quality drama. It certainly has its good points, it's a strong script, it has some really strong production values, and most of all Sarah Parish is commanding from start to finish, dare I say she stands head and shoulders above everyone, and gives a truly strong performance.

I'm not shocked to read through some of the negative reviews, I can see how it could have not appealed to some, the ending was a little bit of a non event, but I'm sure the door is open for a second series. The character of Bancroft is intriguing, arguably the most manipulative woman on screen in 2017, was there anyone she didn't use to cover her tracks?

Strong performances from Faye Marsay and Amara Karan also, it was somehow missing a little something, not sure I can see Lee Boardman as a Police Man, he has to be a bad guy, but all in all I think Bancroft was quite gripping. 7/10

So far I've only seen the pilot- but I liked it a lot
EinatB4 February 2018
It's very dark, there are a lot of hints and clues about the characters inner attributes as oppose to saying everything 'flat out'. Also pretty realistic, you see a woman in a certain age played by a woman of that age, which is very different from American TV (well, I guess most France and British productions do that, but it's still wonderful). So far I watched the pilot- but I hope they'll make a second season out of this.

The Murder of Sherri Rasmussen in 1986.
VeganVag28 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Part of this movie was the recreation of a real cold case murder that happened in The U. S. in 1986 when a then LAPD cop Stephanie Lazarus broke into a Van Nuys, California apartment of Sherri Rasmussen, and police office husband John Ruettenn, who was at work at the time,,, brutally beating, BITING, then shooting her to death because of jealousy.

Thanks to the ever evolution of DNA testing, in 2009 cold case detectives were able to exam the DNA on a thrown away cup by now detective Lazarus to the DNA bite on file from Rasmussen's body, where 26yrs later after the 1986 murder, in 2012, Lazarus was convicted of first degree murder and received 27 years to Life. You can find crime investigation videos about that case on YouTube, which will shock you to find out how the LAPD treated the case, the female criminalist, and her family before the case was reopened.

Once I realized this was the recreation of that case, I had no choice but to stick it out, though it was really tough because of so many absurdities surrounding what was more like a 90s Twin Peaks dark thriller. Taking a break to read comments here, and reading the real cold case again on Wikipedia immensely helped, but I decided to rewatch season 1 after rereading the actual cold case to check the similarities, something which confirmed what I watched before. Unlike this movie, newlyweds Sherri and John were college sweethearts and athletes who truly loved each other, but like the movie, after Sherri's death, because John and Stephanie once had a casual sex relationship before his marriage to Sherri, he testified in court that she was able to worm herself back into his arms for a brief encounter.

I just don't get why writers don't take enough pride in their work when it comes to fixing the ridiculous amount of plot holes before releasing their films, especially after using a real cold case murder, and using pretty good actors who did a great job despite everything. Shame on them.

First series is second to none.
MrJRGO21 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I came across Bancroft by accident one evening December 2018, a year after its first broadcast. I'd never heard of it so had no preconception of what it was about. I'd missed the first twenty or so minutes yet it had me hooked right the way to the end of the fourth episode and left me eagerly anticipating the second series.

Here was a fearsome female character who was prepared to go to any lengths to save her career and avoid prison, and nobody was going to get in her way. Sarah Parish was excellent in the lead role and ably assisted by her supporting cast but make no bones about it, this is Parish's show. She totally inhabited the character. I don't think anybody else could have done as good a job as she did.

It's also credit to the writer that she created a script that kept me on my toes right until the end and left me wanting more when it all finished. At no point do you take a particular ending for granted as the action swings backwards and forwards, pushing your thoughts in one direction before pulling them back the opposite way.

Excellent writing , excellent acting, excellent production. Gripping stuff all round.

Awful TV show
AmigaWolf13 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
***Spoilers***Spoilers***Spoilers***Spoilers***Spoilers***Spoilers***Spoilers***

What a awful bunch of police officers, so MANY stupid stuff that happened in this show, in real life this would NEVER happen.

Were to begin?

Katherine Stevens must look at a bunch of cold cases, and found a 27 year old case about a young girl Laura Fraser who was pregnant and who was killed, she is bitten and stabbed 18 times.

Then a lot has happened........

First Katherine Stevens is so stupid to let all the evidence and stuff on the table, when she let people in her apartment, and of course Elizabeth Bancroft comes in her apartment and sees she is still working on the 27 year old cold case, then she is so stupid to not connect her superior Elizabeth Bancroft and the murdered girl Lily Sacofsky who is married to her best friend Tim Fraser when she Elizabeth Bancroft was young, then the girl Anya Karim who works with the evidence says to Elizabeth Bancroft she works in secret with Katherine Stevens to get her (Elizabeth Bancroft) for murder or for helping the one who murdered Lily Sacofsky, because she knows Athif Kamara (of course) and want Elizabeth Bancroft to take him down, and she says does not matter what she Elizabeth Bancroft did so long Elizabeth Bancroft can take down Athif Kamara.

Then she Anya Karim is being setup by Elizabeth Bancroft, so she is suspended and cannot work on the evidence to get her (Elizabeth Bancroft) for murder or something to do with it (the 27 year old case), then Anya Karim goes back to Katherine Stevens and tels her everything, then later Katherine Stevens is taken of the cold cases because Elizabeth Bancroft is good friends or something with some one high, and he want's to give his job to her because he is going to retire, then Katherine Stevens must go with Elizabeth Bancroft, to take down Athif Kamara so she can kill Katherine Stevens, and then when everyone is taken down by the police but not Athif Kamara, Katherine Stevens must film everything and she finds a secret room way in the back, but of course do not tell the police officers with big guns that she found something, so she alone go with only a hand camera in the room, and is shot by Athif Kamara but she has a bulletproof vest, and then Elizabeth Bancroft shoots Athif Kamara two times with a teaser and he dies, then Elizabeth Bancroft takes Athif Kamara his hand gun and shoots Katherine Stevens in her head, but she is still alive but barely breathing, then her chief hears that she Katherine Stevens is shot and called Anya Karim because he does not trust Elizabeth Bancroft

And then she Anya Karim tells him everything and that she has even DNA that proofs Elizabeth Bancroft is the murderer, then he interrogates Elizabeth Bancroft and says he has her DNA true her son, but Elizabeth Bancroft says it's the DNA of the men (Tim Fraser) she slept with, and that he Tim Fraser is his father and he is the murderer, and then even higher police officer who is in the other room comes the room in and says it's closed the cold case and forget it, even when the one who interrogate her says she must give her DNA the higher person says no it's closed, and that is about the end of the first season.

I have forgotten a lot of stuff that happened in the first two episodes, that also was SO stupid, but i have said enough, if you want a good cop show with a good story and not stuff that would never happen in real life, then look for another cop show, this show is just terrible.

Evil you love to hate, hate to love
FireMedicBear1904725 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The ghastly, depraved depths of narcissism, evil, corruption, and endless ambition of the lead character had me horrified and gobsmacked throughout the series. Throughout the episodes, I continuously reeled as the liturgy of her crimes and criminal acts grew. The writers have made her a character you hate and enjoy watching, waiting for her next evil deed to manifest. Add to that an Oedipal obsession with her son Joe, and you need to fight to toss your lunch, or heave your empty glass at her image at the screen. Add to that a draw that keeps you riveted, and it is a much watch, despite the predictability of certain storylines.

Season 1
mattman_spurs12 June 2020
Just binged series 1 and what a waste of 4 hours.

I think it's admirable this drive ITV have to have female led police dramas - but you've got to get the casting right. Sarah Parish is a brilliant actress - but there's something really out of place with her - and the actress playing Katherine Stevens was even worse. It's not convincing.

And then you've got the accents - which is a trivial thing to get hung up about - but it really bugged me - it was like the directors would forget about the northern accents and then on the odd scene remember they needed to put them in. It's one of the worst accent continuity issues I've ever seen.

The plot is riddled with holes. Its way too far fetched to be believable - this could never actually happen. And then it just ends - with a whole host of questions unanswered.

It did improve as the series progressed - and I will give series 2 a go as there is potential for this to improve. But my conclusion thus far....Complete and utter drivel

Strong start, runs out of steam early, weak finish
qui_j24 September 2018
This is one of those series that starts off well but quickly runs out of steam and ideas. It has multiple plot lines with a story that starts in the middle of events. By about the third episode it becomes apparent that the writers have run out of ideas and just start manufacturing events to try and make things interesting, almost as if it's on a trial and error basis. Some of these events are just not at all credible, others have little or no relevance and quickly cause the viewer to see through the holes in the plot and lose interest. By the fourth and final episode, the viewer is able to heave a sigh of relief that the series is over but by then also realize that they have wasted their time in watching it!
