Japanese studio Nikkatsu has bolstered its Filmart sales slate with A Big Home, the next feature from director Ryo Takebayashi.
The documentary is filmed in a children’s home in Tokyo and explores the lives of young people who live apart from their parents due to bereavement, abuse or financial problems.
It marks the third feature by Takebayashi, whose previous film was comedy Mondays: See You ‘This’ Week!, which played at festivals including Sitges and Shanghai in 2023. His first was Bookmark 14, a doc that followed 35 teenagers from the same school class.

French cinema icon Catherine Deneuve has begun filming in Japan of “Spirit World,” a fantasy-drama film directed by Singapore’s Eric Khoo.
Deneuve portrays a singer who dies suddenly while on tour in Japan. But her spirit lives on and she embarks on a journey to find humanity in the after-world.
The project was revealed by the city government of Takasaki, an ancient town on Honshu Island between Tokyo and Kyoto, where production began over the weekend. Work is expected to continue for 10 days, before moving to other locations.
“I’m happy that a movie starring Deneuve is filmed in Takasaki. I’d like to cooperate in the filming,” said city mayor, Tomioka Kenji.

WarnerMedia today announced the second season of the HBO Asia Original horror anthology series, “Folklore“. Principal photography for the seven-part hour-long series will commence early next year in seven Asian territories including Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Each episode will be directed by a local director from each territory.

No one enjoys being forced to get along with strangers, let alone come to terms with having to live with them. The foundation of a new family, much like a funeral, collides people together with little regard for their desires but, no matter how much resistance is fought or how falsified the pleasantries, we have to accept it as a situation out of our hands and learn to make do. Much can be said about Shiro Tokiwa’s feature length debut “The First Supper”, which features both scenarios in two narrative timelines joined in spirit by the homely presence of food; while both timelines could have made for interesting viewing as separate films, this hodgepodge of a movie forces its audience through a menu of workable ingredients clumsily orchestrated into a buffet of nothingness.

Michael “Brit” Withey, the artistic director of the Denver Film Society, died Sunday in a car accident in Colorado. He was 50. Withey was a well-known figure in the Denver film community who worked for the Denver Film Society for 23 years. The nonprofit is responsible for the Denver Film Festival, local screening series, and other Colorado film events.
News of Withey’s death, which was first reported in The Denver Post, jarred the festival world Monday. In Denver, where the June television festival Seriesfest was preparing for a board meeting, the news left many of Withey’s longtime colleagues in shock, while processing the memories of his legacy at the festival, providing a microcosm of the long-term impact of regional programmers on their local audiences.

"Sometimes I wish I were a bowl of ramen." Strand Releasing has unveiled the official trailer for an indie drama titled Ramen Shop, which surprisingly is not a documentary about a ramen shop, rather a narrative feature film about a young ramen chef. Singaporean filmmaker Eric Khoo directs Ramen Shop, which is about a ramen chef named Masato, as played by Takumi Saitô, who's curious about his deceased parents' past. Award winning film maker and Cultural Medallion recipient Eric Khoo who helms Zhao Wei Films has been credited for reviving the Singapore film industry and for putting Singapore onto the International film map in 1995. He was the first Singaporean to have his films invited to major film festivals such as Toronto, Busan, Berlin, Telluride, Venice and Cannes. Together with 12 Storeys’ co-writer James Toh and actress Lucilla Teoh, he also wrote a White Paper which resulted in the formation of the Singapore Film Commission. Khoo was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Letters, from the French Cultural Minister in 2008. Besides his filmmaking achievements, Khoo has produced several award winning films including 15 (2003) and Apprentice (2016).

Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Eric Khoo’s drama “Ramen Shop” from MK2 Films, Variety has learned exclusively.
The film, which premiered at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, will have its North American premiere in New York at Japan Society on July 19 as the opening film of Japan Cuts: Festival of New Japanese Films.
“We are thrilled to premiere ‘Ramen Shop’ as the opening film of this year’s Japan Cuts,” said Aiko Masubuchi, senior film programmer at Japan Society. “Khoo’s touching transnational drama shows how food, like cinema, offers a bridge across cultures and histories. We are honored that he and star Takumi Saitoh will join to share the film with our audiences.”

Singapore's best-known director, Eric Khoo (My Magic, Tatsumi), was tapped to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between his country and Japan, and what better way to bring nations together than over a steaming plate of delicious chow? In his mouth-watering, sentiment-laden family film Ramen Shop (Ramen Teh), a young Japanese chef visits Singapore in search of his mother's roots and ends up fusing the best of two cuisines. It marks Khoo's second trot to Berlin's Culinary Cinema sidebar after his 2015 Wanton Mee. The MK2 release should be awarded stars by VOD viewers in particular.

Japanese stars Takumi Saitoh and Seiko Matsuda have joined the cast of Singaporean filmmaker Eric Khoo’s upcoming foodie drama Ramen Teh.
Singapore’s Mark Lee and Jeanette Aw also star in the film, which will be co-produced by Khoo’s Zhao Wei Films and Wild Orange Artists. Also joining the ensemble cast are Tsuyoshi Ihara, Tetsuya Bessho and Singaporean theatre actress Beatrice Chien.
The film, which has started shooting in Singapore, tells the story of a young ramen chef from Japan who travels to Singapore to learn more about his Singaporean mother who died when he was ten years old.
Japanese chef Keisuke Takeda and Singapore food blogger Dr Leslie Tay have been tapped to consult on the culinary scenes in the film.
Singapore’s Clover Films will distribute the film locally. Theatrical release is scheduled for the second quarter of 2018.
