Why?
Smarmelade21 December 2021
Why this casting?

Why this director?

Why this story?

Why everything in this movie.

Unfortunately, as expected, this movie sucks. While the CGI is not that bad as it was in the trailer, everything else is.

Story is a chopped up blend of first and second game, but written badly. Casting is almost completely wrong. But even worse - characters are all written and crafted wrong. That's not Leon, that's not Jill Valentine, that's not the Redfields and that sure as hell is not Wesker.

Not to say anything against actors, ironically enough - as bad as they got casted - most of the actors in this movie are pretty good actors, from Donal Logue to Kaya Scodelario. They were just given trash script and story to work with.

Zombies look like generic vampires from SyFy tv shows or whatever. Also - there's some inspired but bizzare camerawork at times.

Locations are underutilised and most are kinda bland looking. Atmosphere is eaten pretty fast by the movie's runtime so there's none of that either.

I don't get it. It's not a unknown brand or something. Even more, RE series is on a high point lately as a video game franchise - one excellent remake, one good and two fantastic sequels in the past couple of years.

Yet, movie is given into the hands of a director/writer that hadn't made a good movie in his entire career.

Such shame and wasted potential.

A decent Resident Evil movie with some gore, cheap jump scares and a lot of fan-service. Not everything clicks and it's incredibly easy to be overly critical of this movie but in my opinion it was certainly a lot better than the trash that was Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. I grabbed some popcorn, candy and a coke with my expectations firmly in check and I had a decent overall time. I'm a big fan of schlocky B-movies and it's nice to see something in theatres that isn't related to superheroes or overly-serious dramas. What I didn't like the most though was how Leon was portrayed but I guess that's because I got done playing RE4 on the oculus and I'm used to that representation of him.

After watching Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City I read a lot of the reviews on IMDB and the only reviews being liked are from people who bombed the film. Are people really that desperate to hate on a movie they haven't seen? What are your expectations going into a Resident Evil movie if you have seen it?

Was excited about a faithful adaptation, but this was bad
foxtografo25 December 2021
The first news of a better adaptation of Resident Evil game (not a reboot, don't call it that, Anderson's series were vaguely based on the game and that always bothered me!) was exciting, but when I saw the first images and trailer I instantly felt I wouldn't like it.

To start, the abysmal take of Leon, one of the main characters, a badass hero, is portrayed here as a useless, stupid wimp, who looks virtually the complete opposite to the character in the game. So it's not the first impression from the images about the total miss cast in terms of look, the character was destroyed in an insulting way and Avan Jogia performance is terrible. That pretty much ruined the movie for me.

Jill Valentine is the other terrible miss cast, even if you put aside the look of the actress, the character doesn't feel like what it was in the game.

I've read an interview with the (terrible) director and writer of this mess, Johannes Roberts, saying basically that he didn't care that much about the look of the actors (bad approach, in my opinion, but well..), but wanted to get actors that feel like the characters in the game. I wonder WHAT game did this guy play. Honestly. Absolute miss.

But if you leave Leon and Jill characters poor adaptations off the movie, it still looks and feel amateurish and poorly written. The dialogs, pace and action, it's quite an eye roll fest.

Lots of scenes are poorly light, and I don't mean too dark, it's just cheap and lousy cinematography. Not all though, some scenes look good, but unfortunately they're the least. The colouring also feels like a bad choice, everything looks yellowish, like if it was filmed using tungsten lights and not fixed afterwards. More amateurism or just poor creative choice.

The action was quite lame, cliché, poorly choreographed and shoot, I don't remember a single one that I liked, and there were some serious continuity issues that felt confusing when Chris and the other guy get attacked fist time in the mansion. (not a real spoiler here, that's obvious to happen, right?)

Now for what I give some credit to this movie, is for the effort on (at least trying) to keep the atmosphere, setting and characters of the game, including some of the classic monsters.

The first minutes after the orphanage scene were good actually, a good pre-first scene of the game RE2, I really liked it, with the truck, the dog... But as soon as Leon appears, it totally spoiled everything.

And the mansion! Along with Chris Redfield casting (the best one, I wish they did a better effort casting all the rest) the mansion was nailed in terms of atmosphere and look, it totally brought me back to my memories playing RE 1, 2 and 3. It was pretty wasted though, I do appreciate that the keys and secret doors and stuff like that from the game appear here, but all that was poorly implemented and the story just drags making no sense. To be honest, half of what was going on, I only understood because I know how the game goes and this was following that line, but the story didn't feel solid at any point as a movie.

The CGI was quite mediocre, but didn't ruin the movie for me, and it gave the classic monsters from the game the chance to be there.

What else to say, looking to the other movies this director and writer has, I'm not surprised this was a bad movie, I'm only sad and disappointed that I'll have to keep waiting for a good RE adaptation, if this one didn't just kill the franchise.

I'd be surprised if any sequels are made for this mess, it looks like the director is hopeful, seeing the after credits scene. If so, I hope someone else picks up on directing and writing and they change Leon's actor.

If this was not titled Resident Evil....
xxxNomadicxxx21 December 2021
If this was not title Resident Evil, you would have no idea of what the heck is going on in this film. It's that empty and incomplete with very little substance. The acting is horrible and feels written for lack of character development, for example; every character has to introduce themselves by first and last name just so viewers know who they are. That's horrible!

Let's hope the Netflix Resident Evil series do better than this!

6.5/10, not as bad as many reviews make it out to be.
GODSPEEDseven8 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I would like to make one thing clear from the get-go;

I'm a "newer" fan of the Resident Evil video game franchise. I always knew about the video game when it first came out in 1998, but back then I was into PC's and by the time I had my first PC building experiences, the Resident Evil franchise wasn't on my must-play radar.

My first "experience" with Resident Evil was pretty much the first Live Action movie featuring Milla Jovovich. And while I 'knew' it wasn't "faithful", honestly, I appreciated it for what it was, a genetics-military-zombie action-flick that you can easily watch and just enjoy the music, ambiance and energy without going into full-on "2001-A-Space-Odyssey-mode". (I'm more a Star Trek type, I like Sci-Fi, Psychological Horror, Cultural movies, etc..)

In the recent years, my actual gaming experience with RE first came with the RE2 Remake, which I really loved and that pushed me to go back and pretty much play every Resident Evil game I could play on PC, in order of release.

The games are pretty fresh in my mind, and I might make reference to one or two during my 'review' of this movie.

So, on to my thoughts about the movie!

MOVIE REVIEW ============

For the most part, I appreciated this more "nerdy" and subtle attempt at the Resident Evil franchise compared to the movies with Alice as the protagonist. While far from perfect, I feel like my time was well spent here. I'm already looking forward to watching it a second time. Usually, I find the second time let's you notice or see things you missed the first time and this movie has plenty of little subtle details and "easter" eggs that point back to the games, or characters.

Where I enjoyed this movie especially, was with the toned-down action sequences, they felt more realistic, more like the video games actually and less like superhero movies. Slower paced, not extravagant running and jumping scenes with huge explosions and all that ridiculous overdone superhero crap that has flooded the market.

The setting - small town, rain, nighttime - was the right choice for setting the mood and recreating the setting and feel from the games.

One of the more subtle detail that really pulled me in, was the way the actors handled their firearms. Resident Evil is (for those who don't know) about a pharmaceutical/experimental company (Umbrella) that also tries to create these creatures for military purposes, and the story always revolves around some containment breach and having to fight some zombies, monsters and other freak creatures. Where Capcom differs from many other "similar" styles of games, is that they tend to go in with a slightly more realistic feel to weapons and such.

The movies recreated this very well and it shows the actors had the proper training sessions to know how to properly move, handle and use the firearms (for movie-level entertainment anyways). I appreciated this, because it felt like I was watching scenes from the game, but with actors.

Another area I appreciated, was the locations that were visually recreated, like the Police Department (and the underground parking lot) and the Mansion Entrance and surrounding forest.

The actors really played their roles VERY well, although, I am puzzled by some of the liberties taken with actors, but I'll touch on that further down.

So, why not 7, 8 or 9/10 ?

I feel a little divided on the whole Claire and her childhood parts. It felt like it ate away at the movie and wasn't necessary. But at the same time, I think I understand the motive; which was most likely to make the video game adaptation a little more palatable by an audience that may have never played or even know about the games. But being a fan of the games, it felt a little out of place.

While the actors seriously did a very good job and I cannot say anything negative about their acting skills, I was quite puzzled by the choice of the actors in terms of looks. Apart from Chris Redfield, the other actors weren't even remotely close to the look of the in-game characters. I can't say I particularly appreciated that.

I also did not like how they introduce the meeting between Claire and Leon, nor the way they portrayed Leon at the start. It felt "off". I would have preferred seeing something like them meeting at the front of the Police Department instead of Leon being portrayed as a little bit of a loser.

But all that was "okay" in terms of liberties taken when adapting a video game. Where it loses most points, in my own opinion, is the pacing and the lack of scenes in the very memorable locations.

I was honestly expecting a little more slow creep and exploration of the Mansion and the Police Department. I would have like them to at least have a little more of the puzzle element that is one of the main points in the video games.

I don't mean they have to copy the puzzles in the games and recreate them in the movie, but at least a memorable room that would have forced the characters to go find something somewhere else to unlock a particular location.

All we see of the Mansion is the entrance, a room with a piano and a tunnel leading to a "secret" exit. The mansion hides MANY secrets, many rooms and, well, it felt a little shallow and like they took too much time with Claire's childhood, but too little with the locations that really set the tone for the video games.

Same goes for the Police Department; sure, the underground parking felt good, the PD entrance was really cool, but they could have "recreated" some form of video game backtracking/puzzle by making them have to find a special weapon in the equipment room, by having to go back to Police Chiefs office desk for the right key, but backtracking there would have led to a few standoffs with some "walkers".

While I think Birkin (the end monster) was VERY cool with the eyes on the shoulders and all that, it was slightly underwhelming. The bazooka shot in the closed train was maybe of a little bit much.

And the scene with the Licker and how it was "easily" dispatched in a struggle with that masked test-girl (I forget her name) really didn't feel all that hot.

In the end, when I look back and think of the time I spent watching the movie, I feel like this is a step in the right direction when it comes to a movie-adaptation of a video game... and thank the movie realms for this not turning into a Uwe Boll movie!

I actually appreciate the feeling in Johannes Roberts horror-style movies (I really like horror movies!) and I think he did a pretty good job adapting and melding two video games into a movie that is palatable by fans and by an audience that might completely ignore the games.

Naturally, this is going to be a pretty devisive aspect, and anyways, 5 or 6 out of 10 in the realm of "horror" is pretty good! So 6.5 or 7/10, I feel, is pretty good!

A disaster
kuarinofu22 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Now I understand why Paul W. S. Anderson's REs were so different. You can't just do a Resident Evil game adaptation, it doesn't work in a movie format.

At times I almost thought that slow pacing, lots of static camera shots, and overall confusion were intentional, but in the end, I don't think so anymore.

Besides the overall atmosphere, a couple of cool close-up shots, and one music track there is nothing of good in this film.

The plot doesn't kick in until 40 minutes into the film, the supposedly introductory scenes don't really introduce anything, since everything is delivered through "as all of you know" scenes. Yeah, we all love these.

I mean, you don't have to recreate every single element of the game, complete with door animations and static room angles. Callbacks and references are fine, but this is a film. Firstly, it should be understandable by the viewers. I played the first RE game when I was a kid and I am overall familiar with the story, but here it comes as a random mess of confusion and absent motivations. There are so many times when characters act with random intentions, speak about things they are not aware of. Was bad line delivery also a callback to the first game bad English voice acting? I guess so.

Every line of dialogue is messy. Most of the action scenes are bad, the "in the dark" action scene felt like it was done by Uwe Boll. Seriously, what was that? A reference to Alone in the Dark? Jesus Christ. And the casting...just...just Leon. Yeah, a great character arc, he's despicable, but then just turns Rambo, fine. I was fine with the CGI since the budget was probably minimal.

Just look at this film as an average viewer. A special police force group wanders into a mansion that happens to be a secret lab. They wander around until they find a scientist they know from their childhood, he turns into a monster and decides to kill them. Then he dies to a random bazooka that manifests itself into the hands of the despicable miscast non-character. This is what a person that is not familiar with the games will get from this. The information on Lisa Trevor and the Ashford twins is pointless to the non-fans. There is no build-up, there is no tension, and the ending feels like nothing important happened today.

As for us, people, who played the game(s), we will surely enjoy some references. And even if the style was intentional, it still doesn't make it a good film.

Maybe it was made to fail. Maybe no one cared, I can't tell. And even though the latest RE films were all bad, this one still can't hold up to the okayish ones like the first and the third one.

RE games fans might shed a tear of nostalgia, but an average viewer surely wouldn't like this one.

Miss understood
pudjo-dewo11 January 2023
I don't know why many give this movie a bad review, sure it's no Oscar worth movie but it a good fun zombie fest flick. I know The story is mediocre (what do you expect from a movie based on 90's video game) and the acting was also mediocre, but man the scenes were amazing, classing zombie horror flick... I know it's different than MillanJovovich's resident evil that is packed of CGI (specially on the later installments), this resident evil tries to do it old school, you can feel the classic zombie jump scare, the bloody gore mayhem.. it's all just fun to watch.. I hope the will make a sequel and have better storyline.

And the way they tell the story has a potential for sequels.

Resident Evil: Easter Eggs Ain't Gonna Cut It Mate
ashfordofficial21 December 2021
Marketed as the most faithful adaptation of the video game franchise, RE: Welcome to Raccoon City focused too much on turning this film into a live-action carbon copy of RE 1 & 2, they forget other significant factors.

I hate rating one stars to my most anticipated films, but they made zero effort to make this film watchable in any sense whatsoever. None of the actors convinced me they were playing these iconic characters. Their paper-thin performances dragged this film annoyingly. The screenplay and the dialogues seemed like it's been written by a film school dropout with zero knowledge about screenwriting or writing techniques that convey emotional connection and realism.

It's cute that they thought this will be a huge hit and they would be able to make more of these in a franchise manner.

Now I just watched all the films released by Screen Gems, Inc. From 2020 to 2021. I don't know, their horror films always attracts me and I love watching them, quality nonetheless.

So much potential
bigbadbassface24 November 2021
They really tried to cram a lot into this movie but it just never clicked. The movie had strong bones but suffered from weak writing and plot. The Redfields and Wesker were cast perfectly but Jill Valentine and Leon were horribly miscast. I don't know if it was because of Hollywood making everything diverse but not only did they not look like the characters they didn't sound or make decisions like them. Man I had high hopes but it just fell short.

An insult for fans
danielcereto24 December 2021
I love the original RE'96 and Resident Evil 2 from '98 . I was only a teen and I really enjoyed playing a lot of hours both video-games.

So, I was really excited about this new entry to the franchise because it was a fresh starting with huge possibilities. But what a dissapointment.

First and foremost, it's not scary as the videogames or visually attractive. Not to talk about the cheap CGI. Budget here is so low. Tarantino's Planet Terror is, a great example of great horror/cinematography.

Second, Leon actor/character was terrible. What was that? Nothing close to the original video-games.

Last, mostly acting is horrendous. It looks like a theatre play or a cheap TV movie. I didn't care about any of the main characters. Not to mention the secondary ones. An insult for fans.

So, overall a pretty bad new introduction to the franchise. It's probably the worst videogame movie adaptation since Super Mario Bros.

A movie for those who loved the games
brokendollification12 February 2022
I loved playing Resident Evil or even just watching someone else play it. I can understand how people who never played the game would not like this movie but for those who loved the game, this movie is awesome. It's so faithful to the game, even down to the first zombie you kill in the mansion. The look and feel of this movie pays homage to the game even down to the creepy music you hear when a zombie is close. This is something that someone who has never played RE would not understand. As far as movies go, yeah the Milla Jovavich versions are way more flashy and appealing to the eye but this captures the awesomeness that is Resident Evil the game.

Not bad at all.
sjlightbown-295-4211574 December 2021
Ignoring all the incredibly bad reviews I went to see the Resident Evil reboot on the big screen last night. Feeling very nostalgic for my first survival horror game on the PlayStation I wasn't disappointed - if you've played the first game from the franchise I guarantee you'll enjoy it too. OK, some of the CG was a bit dodgy but not dodgy enough to ruin the film at all. The direction and acting were good, the story line was good, the overall feel was good. Don't be put off by the picky, lengthy reviews by the wannabe professional critics - go and see it - It's great fun!

Bad effects, less scare factor n lousy script. How come Lisa Trevor recognises a grown up Claire?
Fella_shibby22 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen all the 6 parts in theatre n have enjoyed all except for the 6th one.

This one is worse than the 6th part n thank God I didn't see this in a theatre.

The initial scenes are well shot with sufficient atmosphere, rains 24/7, isolated town n a sense of brooding terror. But then later the movie went downhill.

The effects of the monsters ain't good n there is absolutely no scare factor regarding the zombies n the dogs.

How come Lisa Trevor recognises a grown up Claire?

Claire escapes from Birkin when she is selected to participate in an experiment and that too like a piece of cake.

Ben is holding a gun n he is in a lock up along with an infected fella. Why cudnt he be more alert or shoot the infected fella.

Welcome to Bore City
Tweetienator22 December 2021
Welcome to Raccoon City is rather a bore and letdown. How one can make of such material such a bore feast, I dunno. The movies by Anderson starring Milla are not perfect but masterpieces compared to this reboot or whatever it is. I also don't remember that the games are such dragging and boring affairs - this is my note to all of those who boldly claim that Raccoon City is true to the games. There are a few well done creepy scenes but there is too much stuff I don't like: that cop Leon for example, the whole city is on alert and he just sleeps at the reception. The scene with the helicopter pilot at the mansion too, just silly - nobody would play a game in such a moment. So my issues are: all those moments of comedy, some characters act out of place. All in all a movie that meanders between bad and mediocre, and that fails in too many aspects to satisfy, and really does not add anything new, better or special to the franchise.

OK. could make a series
t2do2dl2da16 January 2022
The movie is ok. Not as high budget as the previous movies but the special effects were good enough.

Not much scare factor, but an ok action movie none the less.

I think this would make a good series so they can stretch out the story line. They could focus on more back stories for the characters, focus on the Umbrella corporation and its nefarious activities.

I guess people are too critical of anime, cartoon and game, live-action movie adaptions. Just enjoy.

Capcom is this your idea of a joke?
Terryfan12 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love Resident Evil but this movie was beyond pathetic it is one of the biggest waste of Time of any movie.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is one of the reasons that video games turned into movies are not taken seriously along with making them the laughing stock of the neighborhood.

They did such a awful job that I doubt Ill even get this movie on dvd it is that bad. It's like they didn't know what the devil they were doing. They took Resident Evil 1 and 2 and force them into one story with Resident Evil 3 trying to keep that over to get to Resident Evil 4.

The casting is awful Not of the cast knew what they were doing Jill and Leon look nothing like in the games nor acted like them. Making Chief Irons into this kind of role is pathetic. Plus making Wesker a wimp how dare they. Don't get me started on Claire actress she was so wooden that she could have been a tree as a matter of fact she should have played a tree.

The songs in the movie serve no meaning. It was like someone took over a radio station and played anything that hit the tape player.

Don't worry I haven't forgotten about the "Acting" good grief I have seen cheesy movies that had better acting than this. The cast clearly only wanted a paycheck but they did such terrible jobs that they should have been fired from get go.

S. D. Perry Resident Evil books were written better than this movie as they force so much in one story. Read the S. D. Perry books they are far superior.

If you are a fan don't bother with this movie it is a disrespect an insult and a slap in the face to the fans of the Resident Evil series this movie should be Banned!

I give Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City an pathetic 1 out of 10.

good first half
SnoopyStyle26 December 2021
It's 1998 Raccoon City. The Umbrella Corporation is shutting down operations in the city. Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario) has come back to warn her brother, policeman Chris Redfield (Robbie Amell). There are rumors of poison in the water. The company had actually leaked the virus into the town's water and it's turning its inhabitants. Chris, Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen), Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper), and others are heading to the mansion to search for missing cops. Chief Irons (Donal Logue) leaves slacker new rookie cop Leon Kennedy (Avan Jogia) alone in the station as he tries to escape. William Birkin (Neal McDonough) is the lead doctor in the experiments.

I really like the first half of this movie. It's relying more on the franchise's horror elements. It's a zombie horror movie. It reboots the franchise from other characters' POV. It really works. The story should gather the characters into that police station and let them fight their way out. At first, I thought it would gather the characters in that diner. That would have been great, too. Instead, the movie insists on filling out the checklist of the franchise lore and go back to the mansion. I understand the allure of revisiting and repeating. Star Wars keeps going back to the same planets despite having a whole galaxy. I really wish that they would do a side story with new characters that can branch off into somewhere new and unexpected.

Very dissapointing
85122219 February 2022
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" (2021) is video an adaptation of 2 great video games "Resident Evil" and "Resident Evil 2". This movie smashes plots of both games into 1 movie. That wouldn't be a problem if the writing and directing were solid. In this movie's case, they are not. Writing and directing of this movie were pretty bad in my opinion. And performances were very forgettable, but you can't blame the actors much. I didn't like what they did with Leon character - he was more like a clown and comical dumb sidekick then game based character.

Overall, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" is a poor movie. Its not a terrible one, there are some scenes that do work mostly in third act, but as a whole its a massive disappointment. It just shows that it is not as easy to make a good movie based on video games as it looks like. You can't just recreate the plot. You have to make a good movie, and as there two media's are very opposite they require different skills and techniques to engage the view or gamer. This movie unfortunately failed to do so.

Solid Adaptation of the First Two Games
Reviews_of_the_Dead8 March 2022
This was a movie that I didn't know was coming, but upon learning of it, I was intrigued. I heard a few people saw this and enjoyed it. When I had a free night to go to the theater, I decided to see this since I'd seen most of the other Resident Evil movies at the cinema, whenever possible. I was a big fan of the games growing up as well. The synopsis here is set in 1998; this origin story explores the secrets of the mysterious Spencer Mansion and the ill-fated Raccoon City.

We start this off inside of an orphanage in Raccoon City. Claire (Lily Gail Reid) wakes up by hearing someone whispering, or at least she thinks someone is there. Sharing her bed is Chris (Daxton Gujral). He tells her it is her imagination and to go back to sleep before they get in trouble. Claire gets up and follows a noise to a room upstairs. It is there she meets Lisa Trevor (Marina Mazepa). She seems to be wearing a mask and reveals that she lives under the orphanage. This girl disappears and Claire is startled by William Birkin (Neal McDonough). He pushes as to why she is there and Chris comes to her aid, revealing he is her brother. He does compliment the boy on watching out for her. William seems troubled.

The movie then shifts to 1998. We know that the Umbrella Corporation started in this city but has pulled out. The city is dying and the only people left are too poor to leave. Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario) is on her way to see her brother. She is with a truck driver who is making passes at her. It is raining hard and he doesn't see a woman that he hits with his truck. They get out to check on her, but she disappears into the woods. His dog does lick the ground where she was lying though. They continue to Raccoon City.

Also in this town is a Leon Kennedy (Avan Jogia). He's a rookie cop who after a mishap in training was sent here thanks to his powerful father. He hangs out in a local diner with members of the S. T. A. R. S. Team. They are special police officers, with them being Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen) and Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper) to name the more important ones. Their boss is Chief Irons (Donal Logue).

Claire goes to see her brother, Chris (Robbie Amell), who isn't all too happy to see her. He feels she abandoned him and we see that Chris kept a relationship with William as a mentor of sorts. Chris must go to work and when he leaves, we see there is something wrong in Raccoon City. His neighbors attack Claire. The Bravo team of S. T. A. R. S. Went to the Spencer Mansion, the original site of Umbrella, but no one has heard from them. Alpha team is sent in to check on them. As they do, a siren goes off, demanding that residents stay in their homes. Raccoon City becomes a battlefield as those not affected try to survive.

That is where I'm going to leave my recap for this movie. Where I want to start is that I loved the homage that was paid to the video games of Resident Evil 1 and 2. There are some changes that were made, but I can live with that. They are mashing the two together so it is to be expected. Almost every name on the cast list I recognize in some way, shape or form, unless they are just a minor character needed to progress the story. This is the movie that I wanted when Resident Evil came out in the early 2000s. Teenage me would have gone crazy. Now that I'm a bit older, I still enjoy the references, but I do have my issues as well.

Where I'll start is the positives, which is the story. I think it works. We are getting a lot of lore from the games here. We are seeing things like Lisa Trevor, which if memory serves for Resident Evil lore is technically patient zero. We also get to see the Ashford twins, which we don't get until 'Code Veronica'. This could be laying the groundwork for potential sequels. We also have two concurrent stories going. We have the story from the original game, with S. T. A. R. S. Alpha team going to see what happened with the Bravo team at the mansion. Going with this is the second game with Claire going to the police station where she meets Leon. These two of course end up together as the games do, to an extent. The nerd in me loves all this.

Where my problem goes is that I think we have too much story for a movie that runs less than two hours long. It is interesting just watching the Fear Street trilogy before my first viewing, because this might have worked better to break them into at least two different movies. I think you can have some of the stuff we get in the beginning here with Claire, Chris, Leon and the rest of the S. T. A. R. S. Members, but I want to see them exploring the mansion more than we get. I'd also like them to investigate in the police station a bit more. I understand that there are puzzles and what not, so mashing it together like we get makes sense. I think there's more story here to uncover about Umbrella and how deep the corruption goes in Raccoon City. This movie is setting the stage for a sequel by introducing things involving Ada Wong (Lily Gao), so I'm wondering if this will do well enough to keep going. I like what writer/director Johannes Roberts did. I do have a feeling though those hardcore fans of the games might not be happy with this.

The last thing for the story I'll go into would be the social commentary. We are seeing corruption here from capitalism. Everyone knows that Umbrella is this great company that is the leading producer of pharmaceuticals, but we see the problems as well. They are poisoning the water and not telling the citizens. They're also doing illegal research as well. This isn't anything new and we've seen this play out in the other movies from this video game line as well as from others outside of it. Big Pharma being something that people are speaking out about as well.

So, then I'll go over to the acting. I thought it was solid to be honest. I think that Scodelario makes a good Claire. She is suspicious about things from her childhood which works. I like that she is pushing her brother to see the truth, but he's a bit blind. I do think Amell makes for a good Chris. John-Kamen plays Jill different than I was expecting, but I liked it. Hopper makes for a good Wesker. He doesn't play it as villainous which is interesting with knowing this character's history and arch. I think there is room for growth to that. Jogia also doesn't play Leon as I would expect. It is different to make him bumbling. I can see why now after this viewing. It gives room for growth, but I'm not the biggest fan. Logue, McDonough, Gao, Mazepa and the rest of the cast rounded this out for what was needed for me as well. No one here is great, we get some wooden acting, but it is more about the monsters and the action to be honest.

Next should be the effects, cinematography and the soundtrack. For the former, this is important to these movies. I thought they did well. We are seeing the zombies in the beginning stages. It looks like they're mostly done up with make-up which is good. I like how they're still somewhat human, but just rabid. We get to see infected dogs and crows as well. There's CGI there, but it was fine. We also get to see a licker, which I thought was also good. The main monster is something created from the G-virus and it looked solid to me despite being mostly computers as well. I didn't have issues with any of this to be honest. It is heavy with the computer effects, which unless you just do zombies, there isn't much you can do. I think we get some great cinematography as well. There are so many shots taken from the games and the nerd part of me again, approves. The soundtrack also hit differently with another viewing. I've come up there.

In conclusion here, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. It is fun and I think fans of the games will appreciate how faithful they try to be with giving us that story, even if it is just the glossed over version of the first two. Teenage version of me would have loved this. Adult me who watches more critical still had some issues. I think this would have been better served to split the story into two movies as it feels like it rushes through things. Regardless though, it still works me. I think the acting is good across the board. They do well in bringing these familiar characters to life. The effects were good to me, both practical and CGI. The cinematography does well in recreating shots from the games that I liked with the soundtrack adding to the atmosphere. I would have to say that this is an above average movie. Fixing some of my issues could have pushed this higher for sure. After my second viewing, I've come down slightly, but I still enjoyed it overall.

My Rating: 7 out of 10.

If you go in just hoping for a wild ride with zombies and monsters, you might be satisfied. Otherwise, not so much.

Like many long time fans of the games, I was certainly not impressed by the trailer for this film. While I was pleased to see plenty of faithful references to the games (Itchy, Tasty, Lisa Trevor) I immediately got the impression that this would be a loosely based take on the first two Resident Evil games.

I can't say I hated this movie, necessarily. There seemed to be some effort at capturing the spirit of the games, and unlike the usual Resident Evil movies, this one seemed like it was trying to be scary. Atmosphere and tone were relatively good. Director Johannes Roberts said he wanted Raccoon City to feel bleak and deserted, and he definitely succeeded, for the most part. Some of the sets felt genuine and right out of the games. Then other moments just suffered. The famous foyer of the mansion and the lobby of the police department looked like poorly rendered cgi images! Plus there were a few moments where it felt like it was trying to tell you it was a "video game movie," which sadly came across as silly. At some points this film felt like a tribute to movies like The Shining. At other points it felt like an Uwe Boll flick.

All of the monster action is fun enough. This movie offers a different take on the spread of the virus, opting for a slow spread of the zombie infection (Hey, there's something up with your eye!) as opposed to arriving and finding the city overrun with zombies. I thought that was interesting enough.

Unfortunately, the movie suffers from pacing and writing issues. The more you think about it after seeing it, the less it will make sense. Some things are over explained, or not explained enough. Plus there are many deviations from the story of the video games. Normally this should be expected, but I suspect that many fans will find some of them to be intentionally done, and there by off putting, if not insulting. I'll be the first to tell you that the movie could have done without the subplot about Clair and Chris's childhood.

Cast wise it was ok enough. I know the internet certainly bashed the casting choices, but they did what they could. The script wasn't always kind to them though, which led to some cringy moments here and there. (What's a chat room?!?) Leon being the object of lots of comic relief was certainly distracting. We get it. He's a rookie!

So if you're like me and go into it with low expectations, maybe you'll have fun. Just don't think too hard about it. If you're a long time fan of the game franchise and bummed out, fortunately for you the remake of the Resident Evil 2 game was awesome!

It's a shame to see so many low reviews
Doctor_Enigmatic13 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I remember back when RE came out. Spending weeks, after school checking all the rental places in my small town. That was like 3 in all; and it was always checked out. I remember going into the Cubby Hole because I was going to look at MtG cards. I saw they had it, because apparently, they had a game rental section. I had always seen the name, but never went in, until I was told by a friend, that is where he got his Magic cards.

I had to pay by the day to rent it. I was in middle school, 8th grade. Back then we didn't have a lot of Zombie material. I was very heavy into Romero. I had discovered Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead, and I would watch that and Dawn of the Dead at least a couple times a week. I didn't really know what to expect. I had just gotten my PS for my birthday and only had Die Hard. I was going to get RE based on what my a couple friends said. I was worried I wouldn't like it and I didn't want to waste what game I got for my new system.

The feeling of playing that game, late at night during the summer. The memory doesn't remember the pixels being so obvious. Back then it was so amazing. There was a dude chewing another dudes face. Come on man! That made me absolutely lose my mind. That was when I knew I was hooked on zombies forever.

Itchy. Tasty. I haven't cheered at a movie like that since Cap hefted Mjolnir. That was when I knew, this movie was the best game movie ever. I originally thought that the Dead or Alive soft-core flick from the early 2000's was the most realistic and faithful game movie I had ever seen. I also loved Hitman with Timothy, and Marky Mark as Pane. Both amazing games I played way too much of. This one blew them out of the water without even trying.

Seriously. Watching this I was right back to being a kid again. Life wasn't just absolute abject horror or when it was all going to end; days left forever gray. No I was young, Spawn was on HBO as a pretty awesome comic movie (because once again, back then we didn't have much of that stuff.) Boobs were awesome, I was going to be learning to drive soon, and zombies were the greatest invention ever. I'm thankful every Easter they were created.

This movie takes the first and second game, it takes you back to that time, before we've seen zombies talked to death while they walked and fell apart. We didn't have any Negan's. We didn't have a weekly soap opera that somehow both excited and bored the living excrement out of. It was fresh and it was fun. The horror of playing it late at night at a sleep over. The way the zombies moved was slow and realistic. We didn't have Snyder show us the pants sh#*ing horror of what running zombies was.

Going into this movie and thinking about all the different things we've seen them do in the last few years. We had one zombie chilling, eatting brains with hot sauce, whilst solving crimes like a messed up CSI. We have had zombie babies, zombies in wheel-chairs (those two are my personal favorite.) They did with zombies what they did with Vampires. Over saturation.

This took me back to the beginning. Showing how slow, creepy, and just squishy, zombies were. The guns were almost all on point. My two biggest complaints are the lame forced Jill and Wesker thing, and Leon being an inept toolbag who most definitely did not use a .45. Everything else though, they took the two games, deleted all the time between, got them all synched and one really useful story.

The shame is, most people aren't going to be as understanding. They aren't going to realize just how accurate and amazing this is. They claim lame cgi or plot. The games were just like that. We didn't nit pick! It was crazy, but it was fun! The creatures were spot on! The train, I was honestly waiting for a mention to the other series.

I saw the first series when it hit theaters. Was there opening night for all of them. I saw the first one four times in theaters. Once again, not a lot of zombies. This is what I had been waiting my life for, up to this point. Not to mention, that moody instrumental track they had for the first RE movie was the most legit game-movie theme. It is spooky and interesting and I love it. That's about the only positives I got at the moment. They were ok, but I never thought of them as RE, mostly because I'd get angry at the liberties that were taken. Because they tried course correction, which just made it even more awkward.

This takes all the stuff from the games and streamlines it. Which the only people that are truly going to appreciate what this movie did, will have wished it was back in 98. Man, this thing would have melted the box office. Woulda had that Marvel money type opening. Unfortunately it is today. The people seeing this have been disenfranchised from Hollywood horror. It's part of why I feel so strongly about it. Sony agreed to put out a true adaptation of material. Hardly seems like the thing they do. I'm still grouchy over them wasting Daniel Craig. We coulda had more films. But I digress.

If you loved the games and you want to see a genuine love letter to the games, this movie is where it is at. Moonlight Sonata, Keys, and Rockets (of course the rocket launcher you used back then was the sweet 4 barrel system from Commando.) Wesker was actually pretty cool here. Really loved his arc more than in the games, even tho it did keep close to game stuff.

Instead of being quick to hate because it's different, people should see the amount of love and thought that went into this. I can't even remember all the different movies I've seen urinated on just because some big studio bought it and wanted to make that money back stat. Empty, soulless projects that makes you not only sad it was made, but sad the source material lead to an act of crime such as that. I'm clearly talking about Catwoman with Halle Berry. Just no.

It was nice to take a trip back to simpler times. Guess I really am getting old. Doesn't seem that long ago.

Decent Movie, Many Ignorant Reviews
RavenEffect6662 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't really post a lot of reviews but after reading numerous reviews from people who clearly had no clue about this movie, I felt I had to...

The movie isn't a reboot from the god awful Milla Jovavich films first off. The Milla Jovavich films were BASED on the RE series / video games, and badly might I add. Those movies did whatever they wanted with characters, annihilated storylines, made the Alice character essentially a superhero despite her character never being in the games or even being referenced, etc.

The movie essentially covers the first three, original Resident Evil games. Many scenes and locations were pulled what appeared to be right out of the game. If you played the original games and are familiar with them, you'll pick up on MANY Easter eggs and they are cool. It's nice to see the original source material finally being used and put on the big screen.

The negative though. Some characters were outright annoying. Jill in this, for example, appears to be some wannabe tough guy while in the original game, she was smart and appeared kinda clueless / new. Leon is probably the most annoying in the movie. Given, in the original game, it WAS Leon's first day on the job, but he wasn't stupid by any means. This movie, he was just dumb, had no idea about anything, apparently a political hire from input from his father (never said in the game) and no one liked him. He definitely wasn't the Resident Evil 4 version where he was confident, a good fighter and had a lot of experience. This version just made you shake your head a lot.

The ending is similar to Resident Evil 3 where yes, the city gets destroyed, but not the way it does in the games. Instead something goes poof and the city collapses in on itself? I don't understand how that was meant to stop a virus, so that didn't make much sense.

Overall. If you know the original games, the monsters and the material, you'll get this movie and enjoy it. If you are expecting it to be like those god awful Milla movies, you'll be sorely disappointed. I really do hope the movie does well enough so we can get sequels and continue with the source material. The video game fans would absolute love it.

Don't bother...
lareval25 November 2021
It makes the Milla Jovivich films even better to me. This is an awfully executed, boringly disjointed, terribly miscast, soulless mix of two games and crushingly bad movie experience. On top of that: worst CGI I've seen in quite a bunch of years. The jump-scares are cheap and without the tension nor the build up like in the games and some of the previous movies. I don't know what is Kaya Scodelario doing here. The franchise (even being what it is), the actors and we as the audience deserve so much better than this.

LEON WAS A ROOKIE NOT AN INCOMPETENT FOOL
aonocoo24 November 2021
My hate for this movie is immeasurable and my day is ruined COMPLETELY ATROCIOUS CAST Leon : They made him a LAUGHING STOCK , a comic relief, a stupid sidekick for Claire! In the game the president saw how competent Leon was during the Racoon case and decided to hire him..HOW ARE YOU GONNA EXPLAIN THIS LATER? Of course let's not dwelve more into how he looks EXACLTY LIKE CARLOS! At least shave his beard do the bare minimum! Also his acting was mediocre af

Claire: A conspiracy theorist and a complete joke nothing like Claire and plus the actress look old for Claire

Chris: Ok

Jill:This is not Jill , looks nothing like her ACTS nothing like her..also cringe

Wesker:Ok

For those of you who rated this more than 3 I wanna ask..HOW much did they paid you to do so?
