Quite a fun crime comedy
Gordon-1115 December 2019
I think this is quite a fun crime comedy. There's blood, action, love and jokes. The French madman is a memorable character, while the art by the wife quite resembles what I think of the modern art world. I enjoyed watching this film.

Radio this to you little friends
nogodnomasters27 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Red (Luke Bracey) gets out of prison and returns home to his artist wife (Nina Dobrev) and daughter (Ella Ryan Quinn) who only speaks French. He has a difficult and comical parole officer (Clifton Collins Jr.) and has stolen bonds stashed. Luc Chaltiel (Crispin Glover) is a psychopathic killer who is out to kill someone in a grindhouse style.

You can see a lot of "Pulp Fiction" in this film which was on the vulgar side at times. I thought the supporting cast was excellent while Luke Bracey would not have been my first option. If you like the grindhouse style, you might want to check this one out.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

I love you honeybun, or not.
danielcereto20 October 2019
First, I appreciate this kind of movies from time to time that tries hard to copy the original style from Pulp Fiction or Lock and Stock. Second, this one tries hard but fails soon, as soon as the script create weird situations and decisions from the characters. Lastly, some movie characters could have been great, with a more risky script, but the movie fails on originality and sinks by itself. The ending is a cheesy joke. Overall watchable but not a great one. I suggest to watch it if you're a great fan of Guy Ritchie's movies or Tarantino. I didn't love as I would this one honey bunny.

A Sequel of Sorts to "Killing Zoe"
zardoz-1328 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Back to the Future" actor Crispin Glover who played George McFly steals the show in "Lucky Day,"Oscar-winning "Pulp Fiction" writer Roger Avary's graphic comedy of errors about revenge. Cast as dastardly villain Luc Chaltiel, Glover plays a looney French gunman with no qualms about killing anybody. Our protagonist, an amiable safecracker on parole, Red (Luke Bracey of "Hacksaw Ridge"), describes Luc as "at the top of the mob's psychopath totem pole." Luc has flown from Paris to Los Angeles to personally kill Red. Since Luc's brother died in the same heist that landed Red behind bars, Luc blames him for his brother's demise. Meantime, Luc informs a U.S. Customs Agent that he has come to America for pleasure and business. When prompted to be specific, Luc replies, "I take pleasure in my business." The Agent asks him about his 'business,' and Luc grins wickedly, "Retirement planning."

Immaculately attired in a black suit, white shirt, tie, and gloves, this sadistic Gallic gunman does what he pleases and accommodates nobody. For example, when he steals a gangbanger's hydraulically equipped lowrider '63 Chevy, he shoots the obstinate owner without blinking. Once behind the wheel, he has to ponder the array of gears. Later, Chaltiel cruises through L.A. with the Chevy lifted and tilted sideways on three wheels in search of Red. Eventually, the LAPD stops him. A uniformed officer insists Luc lower the absurd chassis. Fumbling to lower the vehicle, Luc winds up pinning the cop to the pavement beneath the car. Naturally, the cop's partner in a black & white behind them radios for back-up. Luc brandishes a heavy-duty assault rifle equipped with an M-60 grenade launcher. When his initial hail of gunfire doesn't silence the desperate officer, Chaltiel obliterates the car in a fiery explosion with the grenade launcher. Afterward, the Frenchman gatecrashes an art exhibit where he expects to find Red with his wife and strafes everybody in sight whether innocent or otherwise. Literally, Chaltiel paints the walls of the art exhibit with arterial blood sprays in derivative Jackson Pollock patterns. Who he least expects to encounter is Red's trigger-happy, over-the-top, Latino parole officer, Ernesto Sanchez (Clifton Collins, Jr. of "Dirty"), who fancies himself an art collector.

Luc Chaltiel isn't the only eccentric in Roger Avary's violent, B-movie noir thriller. The guy who swaps lead with the Frenchman in this R-rated, 99-minute epic is just as larger-than-life and bizarre. Ernesto Sanchez isn't your ordinary probation officer. He spouts his own little speech about his undying dedication to his dangerous job. Sanchez is an obnoxious, trash-talking, in-your-face lout, but he is through and through honest. Meantime, our hero, Red is a nice-guy safecracker who has served two years for a bank robbery gone awry when the authorities surprised them. Luc's bloodthirsty brother caught enough flying lead in the ensuing showdown to leave him dead and splattered at the scene. Stolen in the heist were bearer bonds that Red's buddy, the sartorially elegant Leroy (Clé Bennett of "Jigsaw"), escaped with without a scratch. Leroy has kept them, $600-thousand 1933 U.S. Treasury notes stashed away in his safe awaiting Red's release to split it with him. Leroy, a handsome, charming, African American with his own impeccable sense of style, plans to open a strip club with his cut of the loot featuring bubble butted strippers from every nation of the world. Moreover, Leroy has always dreamed of achieving royalty. He surprises Red when he explains he has changed his name from Leroy to Le Roi, because Le Roi in French means the king.

Indeed, "Lucky Day" channels positive feelings about France throughout its action. For example, Red's adolescent daughter, Beatrice (newcomer Ella Ryan Quinn), prefers French rather than English for everyday conversation. Elated to see her dad again, Beatrice is also peeved he spent two long years away from her. Meanwhile, Red's sexy wife Chloe (Nina Dobrev of "Flatliners") manages an art gallery, and Beatrice and she have been making ends meet on virtually nothing. No sooner does Red show up than Chloe's lunatic boss, Derrek Blarney (David Hewlett of "Midway") suddenly pressures her into having an office romance. Even the peripheral characters, like the bartender, Jean-Jacques (Tomer Sisley of "The Nativity Story"), who sells illegal weapons to the heinous Luc, are memorable. Chaltiel ridicules him about selling only Glock pistols which he despises. Jean-Jacques justifies their sale because the locals thrive on them.

"Lucky Day" features some gory action scenes. The shootout in Jean-Jacques's bar where Luc bought his arsenal of firearms is as ridiculous as it is ferocious. The French gunman shoots an assailant in a three-way standoff who accidentally discharges a shotgun which unfortunately decapitates an innocent bystander. The headless body staggers around and then collapses to the floor. Just about every scene involving the abrasive Luc is atypical. Another scene features Luc, testing an assault weapon from Jean-Jacques' rooftop where he has been scrutinizing the variety of firearms that the crazy bar owner has for sale. Again, Luc proves himself an excellent marksman, obliterating a hotdog in a man's hand from a vast distance. Inevitably, Red must face the fact he has lost his touch at opening safes during his confinement. He tries to open Leroy's safe, but he cannot. Later, the evil Luc shoves Beatrice inside Leroy's safe and challenges Red to get her out before she suffocates.

Luke Bracey is almost unrecognizable as Red with a buzz cut and beard. When he isn't dealing with Ernesto, he is dodging Luc, and struggling valiantly to protect his wife and daughter. Of course, Luc leaves a trail of corpses everywhere he goes in search of Red. Interestingly enough, "Lucky Day" serves as a sequel of sorts to Avary's earlier crime film "Killing Zoe" (1993), co-starring Eric Stoltz and Julie Delpy, about another charismatic safecracker who tangled with a psychotic partner that wanted everything. R-rated for bloody violence, profanity, and sexual content, "Lucky Day" boasts a happy ending without a dull moment.

Identity Crisis

The crazy frenchman is on a revenge streak and fresh-outta-jail is trying to protect his family. The movie has an identity crisis / like a dark action that can't decide if it wants to be funny.

Luc retirement planning guide
wjosephjorob13 October 2019
I enjoyed this odd-ball crime comedy, it came across like a low budget Tarantino film, with European overtones in terms of style, this film involves one unfortunate guy who gets out of jail and the crazy day he has trying to keep his life together and the characters that affect his world, I have to give props to Crispin Glover for providing the most unhinged villain, he is hardcore crazy as Luc the retirement planner, the parole officer in the film was hilarious , the bar scene has to be seen, very dark and funny as well,it goes by rather quickly this film so it won't take up too much of your time, good action scenes and acting overall.

Some people aren't getting it
dtnmusic13 October 2019
This was a fun movie and the acting was great. Yes, there was some weird unnecessary attachment to pulp fiction (25 years later!) but I'm pretty sure that was intentional. I can tell Roger Avary was almost doing an homage to Pulp Fiction and it didn't weaken the film for me. Crispin Glover was awesome, the actor that played Red was solid, the female lead was great too. The over-the-top bits were perfectly executed, finding the balance between absurd and comical while keeping the story flowing. I didn't know what to expect going into this, but I left the theatre wanting to see it again. It packed a lot of action and great acting into a film that was probably 10 mil budget (low in this day and age.)

Loony performance from Crispin Glover.
Andrew_Wiper21 October 2019
Violent, gory, crude and vulgar. If this is your kind of thing, you will probably enjoy "Lucky Day". Roger Avary directs and writes this film. He co-wrote Pulp Fiction and also wrote screenplays for Silent Hill and Beowulf. He directed Killing Zoe and The Rules of Attraction (both underrated in my opinion).. He has done some good stuff and I enjoyed all those movies. That being said, I was expecting a little more with this one. It wasn't great but it definitely wasn't bad either. It diverted my attention for a solid 95 minutes. If you ask me, the reason to watch this movie is for Crispin Glover's performance as the psychopathic hit man with a crazy French accent. So over the top but it makes the movie that much better. I'm not saying the other actors weren't good in it because they work with what they are given and they do a good job. Luke Bracey and Nina Dobrev (who puts on a convincing accent as well), were both solid in their roles. The movie could have had a little more storyline added in there, but it was watchable. I'll give it a 6.75/10

Why did I watch this?
fastpuppy7 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First of all the accents are painful to listen to.

Glover is a better actor than this (I am not sure why he doesn't make better movies) and so is Dobrev. I am not sure why either of them decided they can pull off these cartoonishly bad accents.

Stylistically, the movie has it's moments but the story is thin at best. Sure, a revenge movie where an assassin who doesn't care about the consequences of his actions tracks down a recently released convict. We have all seen it done more convincingly.

The audience is left doing the heavy lifting the writer and director failed to do and the level of suspension of disbelief required is near insurmountable if you have the mental capacity to walk and chew gum at the same time.

This is one of those movies I put a star next to to watch sometime in the future then forgot about it because there were so many bad reviews.

I finally got around to it and it was not all that bad. Sure there were some problems with it. But over all the story lone, acting and end did not come off as amateurish as some have claimed.

My Lucky Day
ashrafxx14 January 2020
My lucky day i watched this after the low ratings it got. There are unusual movies that are just weird and doesn't click and then there is this unusual movie which transport you into a another fascinating world and that's exactly what this movie did for me. Yes its a simple fiction story but in a great atmosphere with a beautiful sound track, yet still suspenseful and gripping all at the same time.

The small cast was all great, everyone acted their role to perfection and the connection and chemistry between them felt real. Crispin Glover character was really funny, not sure why people are taking it too seriously.

Was also pretty impressed by the values the character showed in the story, The loving Husband and father, the loyal loving wife, the caring and honest cop and the friendship.

The script, direction, sets and camera work were all great, i can't fault them

artificial but still artistic
ops-525352 December 2019
Its a very black ''petit comedy'', over a very short and contant story. its bloody in the action, and very lighthearted in the humour. the filming are held in a high quality zone, and so are the sound work. the carachters are archetypes , used since the start of making pictures on the silverscreen. the acting are fair and square, were everyone has their own kind of issues to attend to. its the big, the bad, the fawn and the phoenix, all brought together in love ,greed and hate.

the grumpy old man did not get aroused, but i will still recommend a look. its a film that you can ditch out of anytime and never ever think about it.

A Wasteful, Unfunny, Canadian Bacon Cinematic Butcher Fest.
tkaine314 October 2019
For a film that's supposed to be over the top with outrageous scenes and funny antics this was just way out of place. The characters were super unoriginal like the foreign hitman who flys in from another country who's butchering a French accent that's so bad it's not funny. The timing of all the scenes were awkward and super corny at best. There's even a ton of mistakes. Like the hitman steals the car from the garage and leaves his suitcase on the roof of the car then drives off and it appears later when he goes in the bar. Or When he's pulled over by the cops and has gloves on and then steps out and doesn't hav'em on and then shoots the gun and they magically appear on again. I mean did they even screen this in the editing process c'mon I'm not even a stickler for these things so i know millions of others seen it also. Just real shabby work all around the board and you can tell this film was not cheap to make so somebody funded a crappy attempt at an off the wall comedy. The acting is bad because the writing is horrible and the actors even show it on their face they know it's not good and you can even tell they know. Theres so much not to like I wouldn't recommend this film it's definitely not worth a watch.

Fan of "Pulp Fiction"? This is the light version.
peterp-450-2987166 November 2019
Purpose for coming to the United States, Mr. Chaltiel? Uh... Business... Pleasure... Well, which one is it? A little bit of both. I take pleasure in my business.

These days it's kind of hype to create reboots or remakes of films from a bygone era. Even though I hate this kind of filmmaking and I see it as easy money, I got enthusiastic about "Lucky Day". It's not a reboot or a remake in the strict sense of the word. But the similarities with "Pulp Fiction" are so obvious, I automatically call it the ultimate reboot for this legendary 90s movie. And if there's one person who could do the job without any problems, it would be Roger Avary, co-writer of "Pulp Fiction". The only thing you could ask yourself is: "Who was waiting for this?".

The whole movie is about Red (Luke Bracey), a safecracker, who leaves prison after 2 years and returns to his French-speaking wife Chloe (Nina Dobrev) and cuddly daughter Beatrice (Ella Ryan Quinn). He's determined not to return to his criminal life. He just has a little rainy-day stash hidden away somewhere. The news of his release, however, also reached someone else. None other than Luc Chaltiel (Crispin Glover) personally flew over from France to take revenge on Red. Luc's brother got killed during a robbery that went completely awry. And Red was part of the gang.

This movie has "Pulp Fiction" written all over it. It's a cocktail of various facets that were so characteristic of this milestone in Tarantino's oeuvre. Chloe's hair itself looks like a copy of that from Uma Thurman's. And there is also the overall atmosphere with a matching soundtrack and a mixture of absurd, cartoonish supporting characters. But it's mainly about extreme violence and bloody scenes. So expect some like-watermelons-exploding heads and slashed throats. And all this is bathed in black, sometimes vulgar, humor. Crispin Glover as a car thief, who drives his car twice over the victim. His explosive confrontation with a police patrol. The absurd gunfight in the bar. The psychopathic way in which he causes a bloodbath during an art exhibition. Perhaps it's not so impressive these days since we are overwhelmed with films full of extreme hard violence. But it still was enjoyable.

Without a doubt, Crispin Glover's character is the most eye-catching part of this film. You always wanted to know how the weird and silly George McFly (Yep, father of Marty McFly in "Back to the Future") would look like as a ruthless, brutal, psychopathic assassin with a heavy French accent? Well, this is your chance. Crispin Glover brilliantly parodies this. Maybe slightly exaggerated, but still extremely great. And extremely violent. For many, the French accent will be annoying. Yes, it might be even slightly offensive towards our French fellow men. To me, it felt like a theatrical parody. I read somewhere that you could compare him with Pepé Le Pew. But in the end, this extremely exaggerated accent suited his exorbitant attitude as the well-dressed, capricious murderer who's looking for revenge.

"Lucky Day" has more of those absurd characters in store. For instance, Tomer Sisley as the eccentric bartender with a Hitler mustache. An over the top absurd role. Or the foul-mouthed probation officer Ernesto Sanchez (Clifton Collins Jr.). Compared to these characters, Red and Chloe can be called normal. Even though Chloe is rather eccentric when looking at her artworks. Art inspired by prison walls.

For me "Lucky Day" certainly wasn't a boring movie. It was the perfect material to fill up free leisure time. The comparison with "Pulp Fiction" is made quickly. But admittedly it can't match this brilliant film. For that, it lacks panache and originality. The brilliant renditions of Travolta, Jackson, and Thurman are of course matchless. And on a narrative level, "Lucky Day" must of course also recognize its superior. The harsh and relentless style full of violence, bloody brutality, and vulgar language certainly was highly present. But we were able to experience that already 25 years ago. It seems as if time stood still for Avary. Just like I still love music from the 80s. But hey, there's nothing wrong with that. Not?

One of the best movies in pretty long time!!! What an incredible fun!!!My only regret, that it was not another collaboration of Avery and Tarantino!!!I would be much happier ,if instead of creating garbage like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,Tarantino would have made Lucky Day!!! Giving 10 stars to boost it up a bit,as people who doesn't understand this style, have really unfairly put it way down.Highly recommended for real fans of early Tarantino films!!!

Terrible
suhstayn13 July 2020
Lots of terrible irritating fake french accents. Intended I assume to be terrible in an effort to be funny -- but it doesn't work. It is just damn annoying. And it is annoying throughout the whole film. And then those mustaches ... ugh!

The acting across the board was poor. I often wonder when this happens does it say more about the director's qualities than the actor's.

Anyway. Bad acting. Bad dialogue. Mediocre plot. Over the top irritating fake french accents. Put it all together and you have an awful film that is a complete waste of time.

Those accents were supposed to be funny but most of the time it's quite the opposite.
deloudelouvain12 January 2020
There is definitely enough action in this movie, a tiny bit of humor, not that you will laugh your ass off, and the story is watchable even though there are some small details that don't make any sense at all. That's the positive things I could write about Lucky Day. The negatives would be some of the actors, some are pretty mediocre, the rest is just okay. The French accents and the supposed English accents that the French have are just not good. None of those actors are French and that's just obvious so I don't get why they wouldn't hire real French actors for those parts. The little girl, played by Ella Ryan Quinn, is just very annoying to watch, I can't see a bright future for her in the cinema world. But, for a one time viewing I guess the movie is okay, it's just not one I will watch again in the future.

"The French Madness"
Kamurai2530 September 2020
Great watch, would watch again, and do recommend.

Crispin Glover runs away with this movie as an insane, gun toting assassin with Nina Dobrev and Clifton Collins Jr. lending some great support. Luke Bracey gives a somewhat forgettable performance for a story in which he's the protagonist.

Honestly the story isn't really that great until the 3rd act, and even then, it's not the overall story that is enjoyable itself.

Mostly it's Glover acting insane, but movie is filled with ridiculousness so it's just as funny as it is violent. There is a lot of french so you have to read some of the movie, but I honestly am not sure that you need any of that dialogue. The family dynamic is beautiful and it is integral in making the family characters you care about, but doesn't really add any flavor for me.

Just the situation of "someone's coming to kill us" for a "normal" family trope is good enough for me, and every twist they add to this makes it a little bit more memorable and fun.

roxlerookie16 October 2019
Given the budget of this film, it makes it one of the worst I've seen. So cringey. It was physically painful to watch until the end. I'm French, so I guess the whole thing was especially painful to me. FFS that was bad, and not in an enjoyable way.

It's weird, but still watchable, barely, I mean
Bad-Good-Great4 November 2019
But the real problem is the cast, and the worst mistaken cast is Luke Bracey, who played the role, Red. What a terrible actor. The whole movie is completely ruined by this guy, Jesus. He's not into this role and into this movie, and his weird Aussie accent also made him out of the place. His acting is awkward, lukewarm, contrite, forced, didn't even try hard to let himself into that role and into this movie. This guy is the first actor made me curse a lot. I noticed that Tomer Sisley played a bar tender role in it, and immediately thought that he might be the better choice for the Red role. Luke Bracey is a disaster. This guy should change his profession right away, I seriously think any movie he's in it would totally ruin it.

Tomer Sisley is a weirdo actor but a very talented one. He's the one that made this movie barely watchable in an over-the-top absurd way. There were many segments quite funny but the large part of this movie was not good, between melodrama and farce. I just don't understand what's the purpose Red's daughter would insist speaking French only. The dialog between the Red's wife and his daughter was in French, but what's the particular purpose? Then a guy speaking in heavy Aussie accent English also further messed up in a farce style. I don't know why, but even during my writing of this clueless review, I still feel bad about Luke Bracey, the lousy and bad actor in this movie.
