WHO SAYS YOU'RE OLD?
kirbylee70-599-52617920 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Acorn once more offers a series that focuses on a group that few rarely see on TV these days. GIRLFRIENDS takes a look at the lives of three women, longtime friends, who are all over 60. For most actresses the chance to be in a series at that age requires you to portray a grandmother and little else. To find a series that focuses on women of this age is refreshing and should be commended.

The first among the friends we become acquainted with is Linda (Phyllis Logan) who's on holiday with her husband Mickey (Steve Evets). Onboard an ocean cruiser that their children work on as entertainers, this was a gift from them to their parents on their anniversary. When a tipsy Mickey goes after something in their room and fails to return, Linda goes looking for him only to find the door to their balcony open and Mickey missing. It's assumed he went overboard and a search begins to little avail. When she returns home she discovers she is not the prime suspect in the potential murder of Mickey.

Back home we meet Gail (Zoe Wanamaker), a woman in the middle of a divorce from her second husband Dave (Adrian Rawlins). Much of their problems stem from her grown son Tom (Matthew Lewis) just out on parole and now living with Gail with a leg monitor on. More problems face Gail when her mother wanders off from the retirement home she lives in.

Lastly among these three women we meet Sue (Miranda Richardson). Of the three Sue is the most outgoing and also the one most likely to refuse to accept her age. As one of the main people behind a wedding magazine she finds herself tossed aside with the claim her story ideas are no longer relevant to younger readers. It doesn't help that the man who pushes her out into an advisory position, John (Anthony Head), has been having an affair with her for years resulting in a son together. Being responsible for much of the success of the magazine Sue takes offense and assumes he is now beginning an affair with her much younger replacement. She seeks the help of her son Andrew (Philip Cumbus) who tells her to sue. Andrew has father issues having never been acknowledged by John.

Now that we know the characters it's time to mingle them together and combine their stories in one form or another. While it might seem that they come from very different walks of life the fact is they were once in a girl band together, nothing successful but known among friends. They've remained friends ever since and when one falls on hard times the others gather round to offer support. The big question here is what happens when all three fall on hard times at the same time?

The series could have gone terribly wrong and depicted the three in two totally poor ways. It could have made them seem weak and helpless. Women are never truly that way. But then it could have made them over confident. Once again, not all women behave that way. Instead the series makes them as human as any characters I've ever seen. They have secrets, they have flaws, they have strengths and they have each other. How they cope with the things like throws at them makes for an entertaining series.

Of the three lead actresses the odds are that Richardson is the most well-known. What's nice here is that she doesn't overwhelm and direct the entire series towards her character. All three leads are provided plenty of opportunity to show their stuff and give viewers the chance to see how good they each are in their roles. That writers would provide three separate characters with the potential on display here is wonderful.

As with a number of Acorn productions one never knows if the series watched is the only one or if it will return with more episodes. While the amount of items thrown at these three in just the few episodes on hand is overwhelming it would be nice to see how they fare after the events shown here. One can only hope.

Makes me feel better about my life
tiffanythestrauss9 January 2018
So much drama! Why do I like shows like these? See title of review. :) And it's healthier, cheaper, and easier than having a strong drink.

You'll know in five minutes whether you like this type of show or not.

Great bit of escapism
mo_dickinson17 January 2018
Nice to see the girls reconnecting and supporting each other through tough times. It makes my life look like a breeze. There is obviously poetic licence but that just means it's entertainment and not taxing.

Love this quirky series about women friends
dpalmintera10 March 2018
If you are a woman of a "certain age" particularly (or not), you will enjoy this quirky series about three lifelong friends. They find themselves dealing with everyday life as well as comical situations that add lightness. It shows unbreakable bonds and loving connections among the three lifelong friends.

Overplotted and artificial
heathcliffrothman29 January 2018
I usually don't bother writing reviews, despite the fact that I refer to IMDB reviews all the time to see what users have said about movies I watch. But in this case, I was compelled to write something because, despite the ostensible positive reviews, the show is surprisingly inferior, despite the cast. There are so many storylines going on that it's ludicrous. It's more hyper-dramatic or melodramatic than a Charles Dickens novel. Each woman has multiple storylines of failed relationships, divorces, betrayal, in addition to a suspected murder and what not. Surprising for a British series, the show lacks a real sense of place and person, and the pace to let the story breathe, the characters breathe, and for things to evolve. There's so much continuously thrown at you, and there is a lack of credibility from the get-go. We go from a dynamic where there was no contact for years and years, to suddenly these women are instant best friends, propelled by the death of one of the husbands. While Miranda Richardson benefits from the flattering hair and costumes dictated by her character, poor Phyllis Logan gets weighted down with a frumpy hippie wig and long dresses, which is a bit of a stretch. Zoe Wanamaker's look is the most natural, though she vies with Phyllis for the hang-dog role. There was so much artificial interaction between the three women, and the women and their nuclear families that it was hard to suspend disbelief and feel you are watching something real. My understanding is that the producer has a good track record, but this one is off in every conceivable way, except for the overall premise to feature three mature actresses. As a few headlines professed: If only the material were as good as the actresses.

Fabulous failing female friends who are funny as. FXXK !!!.
loristanislaus-4419029 January 2018
Only one episode and I can't wait to binge watch it. I laughed and laughed. Powerful issues with a light touch. The squeeze between caring for elderly parents and adult children, plastic surgery, old joints, forgetfulness, financial problems, failed marriages, gay/straight couples, successful/not careers, regret and resentment. A bit of suspense....All. While I laughed. Plus I got my husband to watch and he laughed too. I predict a hit.

Not Kay Mellor At Her Best!
sylviabussey-5523618 January 2018
Kay Mellor's characters are usually well formed, I find the main three characters in this series sketchy & lacking substance, which is probably due to poor casting. The titular "Girlfriends" are allegedly middle aged, with Miranda Richardson's character being the youngest of the group. I find it hard to believe this when both Zoe Wanamaker & Phyllis Logan's characters continually complain of hot flushes, these actresses are in their late & early 60's & due to the bizarre choice of wardrobe & hairstyles, look it! The sloppy casting make it hard to believe or indeed care about. Yes there are plenty of sub plots a la Mellor but it's not enough to make it "Too good to miss viewing."

Enjoyable
Emma_Marie2928 January 2022
The only thing really wrong with this show was that it got canceled after one year. The friendship bond between the 3 leads was tremendous - strong and believable. The twists in the last few episodes kept it interesting and funny. Really disappointed there is no 2nd season.

Depressing
vintagegeek24 June 2018
This is a very depressing show. Their negative situations carry on and on. There's not an ounce of comedy to offset each of their debilitating affairs. They all stumble through accepting the crap their family or friends dish out. Three great actresses and so disappointing.

UPSETTING - DISAPPOINTING
jhays-0130817 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I found very little humor - and quite a bit of horror. Three women take it upon themselves to justify committing murder. Gail was the only one who questioned what they were doing - but was easily convinced to go along with the murder. Should he have been reported/arrested? YES! Should he have been murdered? NO! I know for a fact that with proper therapy/medication people who are violent can turn their lives around. Was he a horrible person? YES! Should he have been murdered? NO! How can the writer, producer, director, actors justify this series? I am shocked that BBC would even allow a program that justified murder to be on the air. I am shocked that all of the actors were willing to be part of the plot!

Too much drama
Tmac885918 January 2022
Didn't enjoy it, I get life isn't easy (even though some of their problems worked out, unrealistically I might add) but this was overkill and speaking of that the 2 women looked great for their age but Linda's hair!!!! OMG it just hangs there, if your gonna have it that long at that age put it up, she looked horrid!

It's alright
allbcarroll20 March 2022
I was hoping the show would get better because I like the actresses but it's just one shit show after another. Nothing funny ever happens in it either to break up any of the seriousness. Not surprised that it was canceled.

Warning: Spoilers
I though it would be good but it wasn't.

The wedding magazine husband not telling the love he would never leave with and why is disgusting and that he didn't leave the wife to e with her and because of the excuse that she would be upset if she knew. So he risked her finding out by cheating and have her be cheated on and hurt his love by having sex with the wife instead of I he truly loved the love immediately breaking up with the wife.

Crazy seeing how someone could have an affair for fifteen years or so.
