Weird show
dschmeding7 January 2018
I have seen two episodes of this show and I am hooked. This is definitly a weird and different take on relationship and daily life subjects. On the surface some jokes might look stupid at first but I think they all lead up to a connection and message that often adds unique viewpoints to themes. Its not really your basic laughtrack humor although the show seems to make fun of comedy clichés.

The whole thing is basically a skit show with some intelligent and creative (editing wise) connections of the themes, many of them sexual in nature or dealing with different views at things in different stages of your life and making fun of TV with spoofs inserted and reoccuring on TV screens in the scenes.

There is one guy here calling this "worst show" which is kind of funny because he used the exact same review on another show here on IMDB. So make up you mind, which is the "worst show" now ... i always found the "worst" statement on movies to be quite funny and idiotic since it most of the time is proof of a visceral emotional reaction to a movie or show that is hugely exaggerated. But this guy is a caricature of himself trolling 2 shows with the word for word same review. So I guess when people accuse a show like this of 12year old humor and lack of intelligence, that reflects hard on their own cognitive abilities.

Insightful Sketch Comedy
atlasmb5 February 2018
"Hot Date" is a a comedy starring Emily Axford and Brian Murphy. It feels like a sketch show, but the individual pieces intertwine, forming a whole that is quirky and contemporary. The two stars morph into multiple characters, exploring relationships and parodying popular conventions and au courant practices.

The humor is smart. They have an uncanny eye for piercing the veils of propriety and self-delusion. The result is a style that may be more about chuckling than laughing out loud, depending upon your perspective. Watch and decide for yourself.

Surprisingly fun to watch
WilliamofTexas29 October 2018
I was desperate to find something to watch on Saturday afternoon because I was too lazy to work in the yard. I was hoping to find something to stimulate my intellect...kidding...I needed something to numb my brain for 2-4 hours. I found this series all instantly fell in love with the female lead. This woman has crazy good talent and a dazzling array of wigs. Listen, I am 30 years older than the male lead but I can identify with the awfulness and futility of dating. It's a death spiral that makes you appreciate self-love and ordering in until said spiral ends and your loving family pushes your Viking funeral boat into the sea, lighting with a firey arrow. I know I'm all over the map but trust me when I say you will be entertained.

Fun, Carefree Show
kevinandrewsun30 December 2017
If you enjoyed Em and Murph's material from their CollegeHumor days, this is a wonderful extension of their sense of humor. For those who are getting first introduced to their material, this is a fun, carefree show composed of connected, albeit loosely, sketches almost entirely played by the duo. Worth checking out!

Quick witted and full of laughs
sstraface12 October 2018
Nothing brings a smile to my face like the CollegeHumor cast from when I was in college, they had an uncanny ability to see through the bull and call it like it is in a clever, hilarious way. This show is the epitome of that by two of my favorites Emily and Murphy. My wife and I have been cruising through the episodes laughing the whole time. Maybe it's a generational or situational thing but we relate to so much in the show that it makes it that much more enjoyable (we're 29 and 31). Worth checking out regardless, a lot of slapstick as well as clever humor. Just found a gem, wish I knew about it when it originally aired.

I chose to write this review simply for the fact someone else gave this a 1/10. I think the show is funnier if you find it relatable.

Possibly The Worst Show On Television
kmello2422 December 2017
Hot Date is absolutely one of the worst shows I have ever seen. Not funny at all, terrible cast, even worse writing. The jokes are on the level that a 12 year old would like. I'm stunned that any network executive would even consider putting it on the air. Unbelievable how bad it is. I honestly don't understand what anybody with any level of intelligence sees in this show.

2 Very likable stars.

Emily and Brian (who play versions of themselves) take on many characters. The stories are fast paced and hit contemporary norms effectively. Currently on Netflix, fingers crossed for another season or 2.

Terrible
timartin882 September 2019
This show wasn't even funny enough for me to push a small amount of air through my nose. The only thing worse about the writing of this show are the people who enjoyed it.

Pleasant surprise

Pretty hilarious topical romantic / sex comedy. Emily and Murph play many multiple roles per episode, with some frequent recurring roles. It's on Netflix and we're blasting through them. Sillier than Love, but touches some similar nerves.

This show is hilarious, it's a shame it didn't last longer than 1 season. Sure some parts are extremely over the top, but it's genuinely funny and definitely worth checking out on Netflix.

Gets you in stitches right from the beginning. There's alot of relatable jokes and it's easy to see some of the interesting people you encounter in daily life in the characters on the show. One of the best parts is how the two principle actors portray various characters which shows you don't need a large ensemble cast to make a good show.

This is the hierarchy of media...

YouTube Indie Cable Streaming T. V FILM

Sometimes some ideas need to stay on their YouTube channels so those cult followings can continue and you can stay the stars you were born to be, because no amount of witty dialogue will magically develop you a plot that you need in order to play with the big boys.

Those moving to this longer form need to think harder about their production values like, endless natural transitions and then conclude that this is probably unnecessary to monetise for a youtube audience...

They have subscribed, they are watching! Sit back and watch the bitcoin roll in.

Sat night live style skits have their place but its seems that streaming services are so ravenous for content that anything gets up now.

The epitome of modern relationships
andrewjames-4932019 November 2021
I have never related more to a show in my life! I love a lot of shows for their humor or uncomfortableness (see The Office or Nathan Ruins everything), but no show has ever made me feel like I was watching my own life like this one. I can get sucked into series like Community or What We Do in The Shadows, but it's because it's written so well and funny. This show is also written so well, but feels like it epitomizes modern relationships. Well done to everyone involved!

The worst so called comedy programme I've ever endured. Lame jokes, lame scenes and so predictable attempts at lame humour

Great digs at popular culture as well as comedic insight into adulthood. Not a lot of actors can perform multiple roles in the same movie/show and Brian Murphy and Emily Axford nail it. Give the show a try.

Very Funny & Brilliant
Kdogg319 February 2022
In addition to others, I'm mostly writing this review to silence the 1/10 crowd. This show is excellent. Witty and perfectly captures the farces of dating in the age of social media. The jokes are clever and funny. Emily Axelford is a genius and I fell in love with all of her quirky characters she played. Hoping that this review and other positive ones like it gets this show the recognition it deserves. One of the funnier shows on Netflix.

A Delightful Klump by Axmurph
lilianmeyer8 October 2023
Emily Axford and Brian Murphy are an unstoppable force of spectacular comedy and wonderfully written terrible characters. This cast of terrible people are so fun to watch which is only elevated by Murph and Emily's ability to bounce off of each other with immense chemistry that supercedes a simple romance and speaks to their bottomless well of trust in each other.

From its early days as a College Humor sketch show series, I was always hoping and longing for more and I had so much fun exploring this world over two wonderful seasons. Overall Hot Date is a binge-worthy series that left me wanting for more of these two brilliant people who shine as actors, writers, and comedians.

Strange and ingeniously funny
jerrysmagic30 November 2020
The show is different, that is where the appeal lies. Like if "kids in the hall" made love to "Saturday night live" it would give birth to this hilarious monstrous new born. These two comedians are such good actors. Facial expressions are there skills changing to different characters are stupendous. I was not laughing every moment, but the dialogue is riddled with humour. It's hard to find original content these days, and this show weaves together scene to scene in a way I never seen before. The director is either a genius or crazy.
