Inspector Falke: Evil Ground
This episode, billed as the first episode of the second series of 'Inspector Falke' in the UK, sees our eponymous protagonist and his partner Inspector Julia Grosz investigating a murder in rural Germany. An Iranian immigrant has been found murdered near a gas extraction plant, where he worked as a lorry driver. The possibility that it was a racist attack can't be ignored but it soon becomes apparent that he'd had run-ins with the locals who believe the plant is responsible for a large number of neurological issues suffered by those who swam in a nearby lake. Away from the case Falke is having personal issues involving his son.
As far as crime dramas go this is a bit of an odd one as many of the characters were more than a little strange; possibly due to effects of chemicals. Because of this at times it felt more like a horror movie than a crime drama. At one point we even have locals going after the dead man's relatives like a group of zombies! This is effective if you enjoy the creepy feel. Apart from Falke and Grosz most characters are a little suspect in some way; the locals could almost be from a German version of 'Deliverance' and the company executive seems to be hiding something. The cast is solid enough and the setting is effective at adding to the atmosphere. Overall not a great murder mystery but nicely creepy.
