A step up that the series has been needing for a bit
9 February 2019 | by OlicosmicSee all my reviews

After the okay at best Mario Tennis Open and awful Mario Tennis Ultra Smash that came after, it was clear that Nintendo and Camelot were starting to run out of ideas for the series. It wasn't uncommon to think the series has run it's course and would just end before it gets worse. This game completely breaks that trend, as this is definitely the best Mario Tennis games in a while. Not the best in the whole series, but it shows how much Nintendo and Camelot have learned their lessons. They've also added a vast amount of depth that makes this the best playing game in the whole series. This sort of borrows elements from a fighting game, as you're able to charge up an energy meter and wreak havoc against your opponent by making the ball too fast to hit back, or break their racket. You can also use the energy to slow down time to make it easier to hit the ball. All of this mixed in with the already fantastic gameplay cemented in previous entries makes this game damn near impossible to put down. The overall presentation, as well, is fantastic, as the visuals look great and the music is very memorable. This also has an adventure mode, which, at first, was a bit lackluster thanks to how unintuitive it was. But, thanks to an update, that issue has been resolved, because now, you don't have to sit through dialogue every time you fail, which makes the experience a hell of a lot better. Thanks to this, the adventure mode, while still not as good as previous games, is now a pretty great mode that does a good job in teaching the mechanics while also having kind of an entertaining story with it, and while I wish there was more depth and more fun ideas put in, the adventure mode is still a very worthwhile addition. The content in this game, while it certainly isn't as loaded as previous games, definitely has more than Ultra Smash and Open, which is definitely a good sign. The single play mode is very customizable and robust, as it actually let's you play in other settings instead of just an arena. The ability to play a full match of Tennis, thanks to an update, makes this mode so much better, and I'm happy to finally see it here. The character roster is the absolute best it has ever been in a Mario Tennis game, as it not only has most of everyone you would expect, but there's more to come. It really is one of this games strong suits. The online is fantastic too, as it works great, and actually let's you invite friends, unlike the 2 previous games, which is still kind of ridiculous to think about. Overall, this is one of the better comebacks I have seen, as it is pretty much everything that the 2 previous games should've been and then some. While I am a bit disappointed that there isn't as much to do compared to games like Mario Power Tennis, there is more than enough to make this a step up that the series has been needing for a bit, which is why I recommend it to anyone who hasn't given this a shot, because it is a clear indicator that Nintendo and Camelot have learned from their previous 2 disappointments, which means that the next Mario Tennis game may actually be the best in the series, and I can't wait. Until then, this is still a great option for as much depth and fun it brings.
