Opening with a quote from H.G. Wells’ novel, War of the Worlds: The Attack is the latest in a seemingly endless stream of film, television shows, rock operas, and most infamously, a radio play by Orson Wells based on the classic tale of the original “Red Menace”.
Three friends Herbert, Hannah and Ogilvy are bicycling through the woods looking for a meteorite Hannah is sure landed nearby. They don’t find it although Herbert thinks he saw something hiding in the trees. He also has a theory that it’s not merely a meteorite.
The next morning they see what landed, something huge and already cordoned off by the police. As they sneak past for a closer look, it opens revealing an octopus-like occupant. But that’s nothing...

Mr Turner and Summer Of Rockets actor Timothy Spall has joined Lesley Manville to headline PBS/BritBox crime series Magpie Murders, which goes into production next week in Suffolk and Ireland.
The five-time BAFTA nominee will star as the clever and complex detective Atticus Pünd in the six-part series about editor Susan Ryeland (Manville), who is given an unfinished manuscript of author Alan Conway’s latest novel but has little idea it will change her life.
Magpie Murders is based on Anthony Horowitz’s bestselling novel of the same name, with the author adapting his own work for the screen. The Full Monty helmer Peter Cattaneo has been set as the director.
Magpie Murders is an Eleventh Hour Films production for Masterpiece and BritBox UK, with Sony Pictures Television distributing worldwide. It will premiere next year.

‘If you are the big tree, we are the small axe’
Made famous by Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1973 song ‘Small Axe’, that’s the traditional proverb behind the title for a five-film series by Oscar-winning British director Steve McQueen.
Two of McQueen’s Small Axe films were selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival and in October, one opened the 64th London Film Festival. Now, all five are coming straight to BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and Amazon Prime Video around the world. The home release has nothing to do with the pandemic; it was always the plan for these feature-length films with a cast including Star Wars’ John Boyega and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, to air for a mainstream audience on prime time UK television.

With Lovers Rock, the first part of Steve McQueen’s forthcoming anthology Small Axe, having premiered at the 58th New York Film Festival, many have wondered how to classify this project. Well, the director gave a definitive answer. “These are five features,” McQueen said in his recent NYFF press conference.”In a perfect world, I would love people to see these films in the cinema, absolutely, but we are living in these times [with] TVs and how people can use this equipment in high quality ways. But there is nothing for me that can beat going to the cinema and viewing with a community of people.”
Now, Amazon Studios has solidified his intention by announcing the release plans for the Small Axe features, and rather than all arriving at once as has become the norm in this new age of streaming, they will rollout weekly beginning this November.

“Mangrove,” directed by BAFTA and Oscar winner Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”), will open the 64th edition of the British Film Institute London Film Festival.
Written by McQueen and Alastair Siddons, “Mangrove” is one of five films that make up the “Small Axe” anthology. Set from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, the films each tell a different story involving London’s West Indian community. Other films in the “Small Axe” anthology are “Lovers Rock,” “Education,” “Alex Wheatle” and “Red, White and Blue.”
Marking 50 years since the events depicted in the film, “Mangrove” tells the true story of the Mangrove 9, the group of Black activists who clashed with London police during a protest march in 1970 and their highly publicized trial that followed.
The cast includes Letitia Wright (“Black Panther”), Shaun Parkes (“Lost in Space”), Malachi Kirby (“Curfew”), Rochenda Sandall (“Line of Duty”), Jack Lowden (“The Long Song”), Sam Spruell...

U.K. broadcaster BBC One has released a punchy trailer for “Mangrove,” one of five films from the “Small Axe” anthology by Oscar and BAFTA winner Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”).
Aug. 9 marks the 50th anniversary of the day in 1970 when 150 protesters of West Indian, African and South Asian heritage in Notting Hill, West London, marched to local police stations in protest of police harassment in their communities, including the Mangrove restaurant. Nine protest leaders were arrested and charged with incitement to riot: Frank Crichlow, Darcus Howe, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Barbara Beese, Rupert Boyce, Rhodan Gordon, Anthony Innis, Rothwell Kentish and Godfrey Millett. The group later became known as the ‘Mangrove 9.’
“It was a march necessitated by relentless police brutality in Notting Hill,” said McQueen. “To commemorate the bravery of these community activists and the nine who went on to be acquitted of incitement to riot with the judge citing ‘evidence of racial hatred,...

Film at Lincoln Center has set the Steve McQueen-directed Lovers Rock as the opening-night film of the 58th New York Film Festival. The film will be making its world premiere, and the festival is going heavily into the work of McQueen, who became the first Black filmmaker to win the Best Picture Oscar for 12 Years a Slave.
Lovers Rock is part of his Small Axe anthology, which comprises five original films by the director. Two other films from the anthology, Mangrove and Red, White and Blue, will also have their world premieres as part of the NYFF’s Main Slate, the rest of which will be disclosed in the coming weeks.

Fresh from the success of “Bodyguard,” Keeley Hawes has told Variety that her next move is into producing. The star has set up her own shingle, Buddy Club Productions, and will start work on its first project as soon as she has wrapped on Netflix film “Rebecca,” in which she will play Beatrice Lacy, sister of Maxim (Armie Hammer).
“Producing and making things happen myself just feels like a natural progression for me,” she said. “I’m enjoying it. It’s at an early stage, but I have a couple of things in the pipeline.
“It’s looking at it from a different angle and coming at it with 30 years of experience. The older you get, the younger everyone else is, and then you realize you are the one with the most experience. That can be really useful on both sides of the camera.”
Details of the first Buddy Club project will be revealed soon.

Keeley Hawes can be found on the Emmy ballot in three categories: for her leading role in the period piece “The Durrells in Corfu” and her scene-stealing supporting turns in the crime drama “Bodyguard” and the compelling true story “Mrs. Wilson.” She reaped BAFTA bids for the latter two and featured in the Must-See-Moment winner for the shocking scene in which her character on “Bodyguard” is assassinated.
That moment came halfway through the six episodes and was akin to Janet Leigh being killed off in “Psycho.” Like Leigh who was a star in Hollywood’s golden era, Hawes has ruled British TV for the better part of two decades. She was one of the reasons that “Bodyguard” attracted record ratings in the UK (20% of the country watched the finale) and some viewers still refuse to believe that her character is not coming back.
But as Keeley confirms in our interview...

Emma Thompson will play a climate-change activist in “Extinction,” a timely satirical short film that will include footage of the Extinction Rebellion group’s ongoing wave of action in London.
Two-time Oscar winner Thompson has herself been involved in the high-profile London-based protests. She addressed crowds over the weekend from Extinction Rebellion’s signature pink boat, which was placed in Oxford Circus, one of the British capital’s busiest intersections, and which will feature in the film. That was part of a series of protests by the group. Its activities are carrying on this week as it lobbies for action against climate change and ecological collapse.
Thompson will play a veteran environmentalist and a highly qualified member of Extinction Rebellion who secures a meeting with a senior government official. She and the Conservative Party lawmaker lock horns as protests and disruption take place outside.

High-end TV productions are spending a record amount in the UK, according to new figures released by the BFI. In the first half of 2018, a hefty 48 high-end programs — these are tax incentive-qualifying shows with budgets of £1M+ per episode — started principal photography with a local spend of £486M ($640M), the highest amount for a six-month period since records began.
Among the 48, 25 are inward investment shows — meaning those with significant finance from outside the UK — with a local spend of £316M and 23 are domestic UK programs, with a spend of £171M.
Among the bumper crop of TV series to kick off this year are BBC/New Line production His Dark Materials, Sky/Amazon fantasy Britannia (season 2), Amazon comedy Catastrophe (season 4), BBC dramas MotherFatherSon and Summer Of Rockets, Channel4 thriller Jerusalem, Netflix’s latest season of Black Mirror and BBC/AMC series The Little Drummer Girl.
