Diane Keaton was Woody Allen‘s ex-girlfriend and muse when she played the lead in his 1977 hit film, Annie Hall — but she wasn’t the only one who served as inspiration.
In her new memoir, Brother & Sister, the 74-year-old star explains that Annie’s troubled brother Duane (Christopher Walken) was based on her own brother John Randolph Hall, an artist who has struggled with mental illness, alcoholism, and dark fantasies his whole life. Now 71, Hall suffers from dementia and lives in a care facility, where his sister visits him weekly.

Diane Keaton, 74, has forged a decades-long career for herself as an award-winning actress. Her younger brother, John Randolph Hall, has lived a life that couldn’t be more different: “on the other side of normal,” as Keaton puts it, since childhood, Hall received a variety of diagnoses over the years (bipolar disorder, schizoid personality disorder) but nothing definitive. Now 71, he is suffering from dementia and lives in a care facility, where his sister visits him every Sunday.
In an exclusive interview with People, Keaton shares memories of her brother and their relationship, the subject of her new memoir, Brother & Sister.

Still reeling from the cancellation of the theatrical release of its blockbuster “The Eight Hundred,” production studio Huayi Brothers has been hit with another setback: Its comedy “The Last Wish” has also been quietly pulled from China’s summer lineup. Both films have fallen afoul of China’s increasingly heavy-handed censors.
The unwelcome development comes as Huayi has announced that it expects losses of more than $48 million in the first half of 2019. That will pile onto a reported net loss of RMB1.09 billion (about $160 million) last year, creating a difficult hole for the company to climb out of without a new box-office hit.
Directed by Tian Yusheng, the writer-director of the bankable “The Ex-File” romcom series, “The Last Wish” stars Peng Yuchang (“An Elephant Sitting Still”) and Taiwanese actor Darren Wang in a buddy comedy about a young man with a terminal disease who hopes to lose his virginity before he dies.

Huayi Brothers’ stock fell by more than 8% on Wednesday, the day after the veteran Chinese studio announced that its new war epic, “The Eight Hundred,” will not hit Chinese theaters as scheduled next week.
Shares dropped from RMB5.48 to RMB5.02 overnight after Huayi said Tuesday that its summer blockbuster’s theatrical debut would be indefinitely postponed from its July 5 release date. The company provided no detailed reason but said that the decision had been made “after consultation between the production team and other entities.”
A tale of Chinese bravery against Japanese imperialism, “The Eight Hundred” was also yanked at the last minute from its prominent opening-night slot at the Shanghai Intl. Film Festival earlier this month. The withdrawal from the festival and from general release is likely to be due to Chinese government censors, who have been causing problems for a number of domestic films recently.
