Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior was a wholesome historical drama which should be lauded for surreal direction, exemplary CGI and commendable performances.

As I completed one of biggest road trip of my life across various regions of Maharasthra, I got introduced to the unspoken history of gallant Maratha warriors when they fought Mughal empire and ruled India until British came and took over the reign from them. In one of episode of Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj, you will come across the name, Tanaji Malusare, who was a popular figure among Marathis and am glad it was perfectly depicted in Ajay Devgn starrer Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior

Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior tells the true story battle of Sinhagard (fort close to Pune) occured on the night of 4 February 1670 between Maratha empire led by the military general of Chatrapati Shivaji, Tanaji Malusare (Ajay Devgn) and the Mughal Sinhagad fortkeeper, Udaybhan Singh Rathore (Saif Ali Khan).

Directed by Om Raut, who is making his Bollywood debut after giving the critically acclaimed Marathi film, Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush (2015), does a commendable job as he waste no time and immediately let the audience come to point. The first half begins with a bang as Tanaji attacks the Mughal soldiers in a small valley gliding through the ropes and performing the sword fighting action in slow-motion engagement and has been beautifully shot. The intro scene of Saif Ali Khan was good but could have been better as he kills an elephant with a single blow (CGI was bad here). As Sinhagard fort is seiged by the Mughals, the pressure mounts on Maratha to fight back and capture it again. This is where Tanaji was assigned to lead the battle. Hats off to Om Raut and writers and screenplay by Prakash Kapadia (Padmaavat, Bajirao Mastani)and Om Raut for doing fabulous job in keeping the balance between entertainment and historical drama.

The second half begins as Udaybhan Singh Rathore successfully transport the gigantic canon at the Sinhagad fort to destroy the Shivaji's palace. Here the main events of battle is depicted where the Marathas took the Mughal troops by surprise. I would like to highlight the best scene of the film when Udaybhan Singh lits the big cannon to targeting Shivaji, Tanaji steps to cut the wire but loses his right hand in the process. The duel fight scene between Tanaji and Udaybhan is well-executed and should be lauded as two actors compliment each other.

While Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior is near to perfect about the events at the battle of Sinhagad, there has been few things which could have been added to make the film even more better. For instance - Sinhagad Fort is situated at the hill top so Maratha warriors had to climb up with the steep cliff with the help of a monitor lizard. Also, Ajay Devgn surrending himself to know the secret passage to the Sinhagad fort was fictional and probbaly added to make it appealing for the audience. The makers have done wonderful job with the CGI but there were places where the visual effects looks unreal. Nevertheless, film turned out to better than the trailer which was released a month back. The camera work Keiko Nakahara along with wonderful art direction by Sriram Iyengar and Sujeet Sawant should be appreciated. Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior does not have much scope for the songs composed by Ajay-Atul but still were enjoyable along with enthralling background score by Sandeep Shirodkar.

Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior belongs to the epitome of talent, Ajay Devgn. He is definitely one actor who has scaled new heights with his choice of films. Be it a comedy, drama or a biopic, Ajay Devgn has always gone one step ahead and entertained the audience. I loved him in the climax scene. Saif Ali Khan is yet another under-rated actor who experiments with his roles. Kajol was just about okay.

On the whole, Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior was a wholesome historical drama which should be lauded for surreal direction, exemplary CGI and commendable performances. Very Good 3.5/5

Don't believe the rave reviews - this is an okay movie at best. First of all, most people don't know history and that a lot of the plot is fiction. Secondly, the VFX is terrible. Have you seen good Hollywood movies?? Please don't call this good CGI. It's terrible - I felt like it was a video game. Third, like all other Bollywood war movies, it's just so black and white. The enemy and the Mughals are always bad and the heroes are 100% purity and valour. Real life isn't like that. First of all, Udaybhan was a Rajput- and even though he allied with the Mughals for strategic reasons, he did not dance like a savage with them. Oh lord. The action sequences too, are sometimes a bit too much. The initial sequence of them going down on ropes - oh come on. I am a Maratha and I love history- but this is not how you portray it.

However, the movies isn't overly long or boring. It's watchable.

Spectacular Visual Treat
rpbagasi13 January 2020
First of all, it was fabulous and felt goosebumps to see Shivaji for the first time in the history of World Cinema. Second the way Ajay acted was exemplary.. Perfect Expression and dialogue delivery. Kajol played her small but impactfull part beautifully. I liked other roles too.. But watching Shivaji in big screen is something can't be expressed with words. Brave n successful effort!!

Bollywood's Baahubali
bansal-yatindra13 January 2020
Finally, there's a film which can be compared with Bahubali. Brilliant execution by all the actors. Ajay, Saif and Sharad are awesome. Kajol is graceful. All the supporting cast leave their marks as well. Ajay-Atul's background score is great again; as they did with Mahabharata tv series. Historical facts are not distorted, though mordenesied a bit. A visual treat. A must watch.

Okay type movie

Movie was overall was good. Acting of all the actora were amazing, background music was lit. However, the vfx of movie sucks. It is just like i was watching cartoon. Vfx could have been better to match Baahubali and hollywoood. And people who are saying that vfx was lit, those people are stupid and just saying this for the sake hinduism. Well, if we will watch this flick as an entertainment then I must say that VFX are average. However, overall movir was fine and worth watch.

Not a bad attempt at all
ronakkotian12 January 2020
From the trailer I thought this film had huge potential. The visual effects and setting looked great and watching Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan go head to head was something that needed to be watched in the cinema in 3D.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is about the Battle of Sinhagad and depicts Tanhaji's mission to reclaim the Kondhana fortress from the cruel Udaybhan Rathore.

I decided to watch this film in 3D to get the best experience possible. We get introduced to Tanhaji in a very impressive opening action sequence accompanied with his theme blaring out loud. It's an opening that gets you hyped for the rest of the film due to the great visual effects, 3D and Om Raut's direction. Whilst the film does have its problems, the entire film is still an entertaining watch.

Ajay Devgn plays the brave Tanhaji Malusare to the best of his ability. The film portrays him as the perfect and righteous being that is loved by many and his fearless but heartwarming attitude is what makes us root for him. Kajol does a great job as Savitribai and her chemistry with Devgn works well. However, the most interesting of the lot is Saif Ali Khan's portrayal of Udaybhan. It felt so fulfilling seeing Khan in a project of this size as he never got the credit he deserved. Here Khan does a phenomenal job as he shows many sides to Udaybhan's character. There are aspects which make Udaybhan seem ruthless and some as playful. He definitely makes a lasting impression. The rest of the cast ranging from Sharad Kelkar to Luke Kenny also give good performances.

The main problem I have with this film is its visual effects. There were times where it looked great and made the time period seem authentic and there were times where improvements could have been made. The inconsistentcy of the effects did take me out of the film a couple of times as I kept thinking to myself: "That looks fake". There were also some writing choices which felt unnecessary. During the final battle, there is emphasis put on one soldier which didn't have to be in the film. Whilst the music made each battle more impactful, I felt it was a bit too loud during some moments.

This was not a bad attempt by any means. You can tell during the film that Om Raut and the rest of the team really cared about this film. If they spent extra time polishing some of the effects then this would be a solid experience overall.

Refer history before making a historical movie!
triphixzapperking4 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When i watched this movie i found it entire commercial crap. Tanhaji was brave and loyal, and so was udhaybhan. Udhaybhan was not a cruel person and he was appointed by jaisingh, no relation between aurangzeb and udhaybhan. The people who watch this kind of historical crap they believe it and true history got lost. Nobody believes true history of tanhaji after this commercial crap. And shivaji maharaj never tried to keep secret of kondana from tanhaji he directly said that he could not come to raiba's marriage because he wants to win kondana fort. Nothing they showed about suryaji brother of tanhaji. After tanhaji dies suryaji leads the battle. Shivaji maharaj did not came in the battle when tanhaji was dying. After knowing that tanhaji was dead shivaji maharaj greived and named kondana as sinhagad and said that "the fort is captured but lion is dead". This movie don't deserve 8.4 rating.

A good watch
divyanshu91148 March 2020
Some scenes of movie are spectacular, other than action, movie story, acting, whole performance and storytelling are really great. Intensity of main actors are really good but compared to other movies it lacked some where, few illogical moments in the movie that must have been corrected to give it better and real touch. Personally I didn't find the movie to match it's hype and more than 8 star rating but yes it is a well applause deserved movie and I really enjoyed watching it. Better to watch it with family, not many movies are so grand and family wali movies.

The movie could have been one of the greatest war movies with a superb historical storyline, but damn from elephants to horses everything was computerised, from start to end every scene with CJI was a disaster and Saifs terrible performance was just the icing on the cake, A TOTAL CRINGEFEST

An enthralling cinematic experience
jwalantjoshi13 January 2020
The movie has everything that a historical movie requires and above all does not go out of the way which seems unbelievable. Whatever is there one will find believable which makes this very enjoyable and special.

Execution on every level is top notch. Acting, music, action, VFX everything is enjoyable.

India's own Gladiator.

The overall experience was amazing!
SoumikBanerjee199628 March 2020
In the recent times we have seen a lot of films based upon historic wars. And the trend continues till date with more films to come. Some of them have been really engaging, others were truly disappointing. This time Ajay Devgan and Saif Ali Khan starrer Tanhaji stood up to the expectations. It comes with Great actions, Well made imagery alongside some memorable performances; it took the standard few notches up in the VFX category. The technical prowess here has been obvious and a pleasure to the eyes. Setups, costumes, art direction all were top class. The fights are well choreographed and never seemed uncanny. I enjoyed this film a lot for what it is but that doesn't mean this was flawless! Absolutely not. The character development of some side actors felt underwhelming. Some scenes seemed to be added because of some particular Political reasons! There were some loopholes or cliches too. But the positive sides kind of overshadowed the negative ones. And as an entertainer it successfully delivers.

Drifts from actual story and too much drama added
suchitatoshniwal2026 October 2020
Feels like not much research was done on actual history. Too much unnecessary drama is added, especially about Suryabhan. Also, very important point about Suryaji cutting the bridge was dropped in the movie, maybe to enhance Ajay Devgan as main hero. Overall good entertainment but not much related to real history.

Cinematic Brilliance
cseabhi21 February 2020
To be frank I was not at all excited by the trailer of the movie and was not having any expectation from this. But Tanhaji came as a suprise for me.

The movie is based on Maratha hero, Tanhaji Malusare and is a historical movie. The thing I like the most in this movie is this is made exactly the way historical movie should be made. Apart from minor deviations, the history has not been completely distorted. This movie has everything, Action, Music, Storytelling and top notch performances.

Ajay Devgan is superb as Tanhaji Malusare, while Saif Ali Khan has given one of his memorable performances as Udaybhan Singh Rathod. Kajol was more of a extended cameo but looks convincing as Savitribai Malusare. Sharad Kelkar was at his awesome best as Shivaji.

Director Om Raut has done a fantastic job with this movie. Music is good, cinematography is excellent. All in all this movie is a visual treat.

Dumbest movie ever
piyush66129 January 2023
You will lose some IQ points watching this movie. It's understandable if they dramatized some historical aspects for cinema, but this movie is totally unrealistic. It is a cartoonish and self serving depiction of history.

There is no depth to the characters, and people are portrayed as either totally good or totally evil. It's feels like it was created as a political propaganda piece.

The characters are flying around, climbing down cliffs with a torn up back, pushing cannons around with one hand that required two elephants to move.

Would not recommend watching this unless you just want to have a good laugh.

smartrchauhan14 January 2020
Everything about the movie is just awesome, say about subject, music, casting, acting, direction, screenplay. The movie surpasses the every part of the.

Must watch,

AJ and Saif did real justice to their character and no one could do better then them to the role they played. Watching Kajol again on big screen is just awesome.

Everything about movie was supremely good.

Must must must watch but in theater as tv would not do justice to its VFX.
