Heartbreaking

Warning: Spoilers
Seeing Olivia in the same motel room as Nell just broke my heart :( I don't know what people expected from "that night" but what I just saw was a mother desperately trying to protect her kids ... Using Olivia's mother instinct and care in order to haunt and manipulate her feelings was the smartest move Hill House could have made.

Heartbreaking ...

Emotionally Draining!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Such a simple yet powerful structural element when you show the first day in the house so late in the story. Wow!!! It's these simple ideas that make storytelling so profound. You juxtapose the scene where the family leaves the mother and the house behind with the scene of their first day in the house where the father tells the mother how could we go without you... Lovely!!! Lovely!!! And yaa my box of tissues are over... Gotta buy another one before I jump to the last one...

A Father's Love
sarmstrong-8933022 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So much of this series is haunting and terrifying. Without the use of cheap jump scares, the audience is left to react to the true terror this family is living. This episode tied up so many unanswered questions about "that night." All of the misconceptions about their father being a deadbeat and possibly a murderer are laid to rest when you see that he saved his children while keeping their mother's memory as pure as possible by never telling them the truth about what she turned into. This was a satisfying and emotional episode for sure.

"How could we?"
Trey_Trebuchet23 September 2021
Not at all what I was expecting. This series is so well structured. Half of it was solo episodes for each sibling, and then a reunion episode, and then the funeral episode, and then one final setup episode before going back to show that night everything happened, and with the finale still underway. I think the writers did an excellent job in how they structured each episode.

Anyway, this was really well acted and filmed and I'm glad Carla Gugino got an episode to act her butt off. Very tragic, spooky, and emotional.

You feel every moment

Warning: Spoilers
Well I've never seen a show like this one in my entire life, and im in my mid 40s. It's not just another ghost story or paranormal show. Its just so unique. It draws you in like nothing else. You're not just a viewer you're actively watching and feeling every moment of this horror story unfold. Your heart breaks for the entire family.

So, it can now go one of two ways, the surviving family members conquer their demons and survive or they join their lost loved ones either by choice or not. This show is something very special, well dobe to all involved!

True fear
snoozejonc29 October 2020
Olivia experiences a number distressing visions during her time in Hill House.

This is an excellent but thoroughly disturbing episode that answers quite a few questions. What I found most effective was the lack of horror movie jump scares and the focus on more deep psychological fear.

It is difficult to discuss the plot and stay spoiler free, but I think it's safe to say that parents are likely to find what happens quite horrifying. One of the biggest fears I have as a parent is what will happen to my children when they eventually go to make their own way in the world and what will become of them after my days. This episode taps into that feeling and presents something truly awful in its depiction of that fear. In addition, thinking back to life as a very young child, the ultimate trust I had was a reliance on my mother and father to keep me safe from harm. This is another theme that gives the story a constant sense of dread.

For me all of the above fears surfaced as the plot unfolded. It makes matters worse when every visual image Mike Flanagan presents of that house is filmed in a way to maximise the creepiness.

Screaming Meemies features an excellent performance from Carla Gugino and great support from the other cast members.

Dreaming Meemies ?
MistrTxxas16 October 2018
The Haunting of Hill House has been a roller coaster of emotions up to this episode. Prior to watching episode 9, I had quite a few question marks and "Screaming Meemies" was able to answer a few of them. Overall, this episode is incredible, regarding the point of view and the tone we are presented with. I give the director and writer(s) huge applause for creating this masterpiece!

A disappointing conclusion
bobsy85218 October 2018
This episode is all about "that night." Unfortunately "that night" wasn't as dramatic as I'd hoped/expected. Still a good episode but somehow left me feeling a bit disappointed, to the point that I might actually say it's the worst in the series so far.

100% flashback! 100% Fluff! Massively Pretentious!
nlytnd_11 March 2022
What a pretentious episode. Flashbacks can work and sometimes throughout the show they work. In order to work they need to remain tethered to the present day characters. This show at times goes way too far astray from the present day characters and this episode eliminates them completely. This episode doesn't even have a connection to any of the prior episodes and it has zero congruencey where episode 8 leaves off... it exists solely on it's own. I guess they decided to place this episode when they think we're ready for some great big reveal, as if this episode has a great big reveal. By this point the audience already knows this. Of course we didn't previously know the precise details that led to Elliot grabbing the kids and leaving that night and Olivia's ultimate fate, but we've been bombarded with the general idea. You could skip this episode and pretty much lose nothing. If you want to know the precise details, you can skip ahead to the last 15 minutes and even within those 15 minutes there's a bunch of fluff to get through.

There Are More Things In Heaven And Earth, Horatio....
wandernn1-81-6832744 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We open here with young DAD and Mom conversing about how kids are so beautiful and cute when they are young.

+1 Star for the scene where Olivia is seeing dead Luke and Dead Nell in the future in her reading room......

And Then Olivia tells Hugh about this vision she had of the future, and Hugh casts it off as it must have been a bad dream she had after dozing off while reading....

But now we see Olivia is having conversations with OLD TIME SPIRITS. INSIDE THE HOUSE...we start to find out what was going on iwth Olivia that made Hugh take the kids and RUN......

In the Night... In the Dark

Olivia has a long conversation with Mrs Dudley. Dudley tries to explain to Olivia how dangerous it really is in the House, In the Night, In the Dark.

+1 Star for Mrs. Dudley at least trying to give Olivia a warning, while Olivia still has some hold still on who she is......

-1 Star for when Olivia is staying away, and calls Hugh, and the kids suddenly won't stop making noise during the phone call. Like all the kids were suddenly just not concerned about mother at all.... Nah, not believable and not consistent.

Then Shirley....meets Olivia in the middle of the night in the kitchen. Olivia asks , 'Are you Dreaming too??''

Then Olivia brings a tea party set to the Twins room, in the middle of the night, and who else is there? Abigail, Lukes imaginary friend. And where do they go?? Upstairs to the red door room. Finally the room is open. While Hugh stirs on the couch, Shirley wakes him. She says she just saw Olivia in the kitchen acting weird.

Hugh goes to the kitchen, sees that Olivia's overnight bag is there, along with an open bottle of RAT POISON! Hugh rushes around the House, finding Theo in her room, but the twins are gone!! Hugh rushes upstairs to find the TEA PARTY going on behind the RED DOOR! It is already too late for Abigail, she's drank her tea. And this is what happened that night that Hugh grabbed all the kids and piled them in the car and took them away! Chased by Olivia and a horde of ghosts in the HOUSE....

And the end, we see again the family when they first arrive in the House, and Olivia telling Hugh, 'You Guys Go On Without Me', and Hugh saying, 'How could we??'

Another hiccup in this episode really made it less than stellar. 9/10.

S1.E9 - Olivia's Madness [8/10]
panagiotis199321 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E9) My Live Reaction / Review for The Haunting of Hill House Season 1 Episode 9 ''Screaming Meemies''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Wait, how was Olivia able to see the adult Nell dead? Im confused, am I missing something? She saw Luke too? Even more confusing. I wanna see what happened to Luke and 20 minutes in all I see is Olivia talking to a ghost. 30 minutes in and I don't enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed the previous ones. Olivia lied about going to visit her sister? Why though? Luke, Nell and Olivia can see Abigail? Interesting. Did Olivia poison the tea? Olivia tried to kill the children, she is nuts. So Olivia killed herself, that's so sad. Not as good as the previous episodes but still good. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 8/10.

Screaming Meemies
bobcobb30110 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Not a terrible episode, but not exactly a cliffhanger ending like we got the last two installments.

The show's problem was they gave us everything the first few episodes so it felt like they were killing time here until they get to their final point.
