The Conjuring star Joey King recently admitted that she has only seen the original film in the beloved horror franchise, although she has a pretty good reason as to why she has so far skipped out on watching the other installments.
Speaking with Screen Rant to promote her new series, We Were the Lucky Ones, King explained that The Conjuring Universe is too "scary" for her to fully enjoy, noting that she still sees the Witch Bathsheba Sherman's face before going to sleep some nights. "Yeah. Oh my gosh, the first Conjuring, I was in it. I was there for the whole thing. It is so difficult for me to watch. It is so scary. It's not difficult in any other way but that it is so scary. I have such an issue," she said. "But I'm so proud of everybody. I was just so proud of everybody involved,...

Stephen King fans, rejoice! The fate of the film adaptation of "Salem's Lot" has been up in the air over the past couple years, despite revealing footage from the project at CinemaCon back in 2022. Not even Stephen King himself knew what was going on with the film's potential release, though he wasn't shy about singing the praises of the movie from filmmaker Gary Dauberman, the director of "Annabelle Comes Home" and co-writer of "It" and sole writer of "It: Chapter Two." Thankfully, fans no longer have to ask when they'll be able to see the new "Salem's Lot" movie, because we finally have an idea of when it will be released. But it won't be in theaters.
Max has officially announced that "Salem's Lot" will debut on the streaming service sometime in 2024. They didn't give a specific release date or even a season of the release, but at least the...

Some good news, ladies and gents – it appears as though the long-shelved big-screen adaption of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) won’t be deleted after all. Variety just broke the news that New Line and Warner Bros will put the movie out on its Max streaming service this year. While this was widely anticipated, in recent months, the buzz had turned pretty dark, with it heavily rumored that WB would be taking a loss on the film and deleting it, which is what they did with Batgirl. The Looney Tunes/live-action mash-up Coyote vs Acme seems to be going that way as well (unless John Cena’s comic performance at the Oscar swayed anyone).
This is the third adaptation of Salem’s Lot. The previous two were both mini-series, which aired in 1979 and 2004. This new take on the concept is said to be set...

The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is still without a release date, but we’ve learned from The Hollywood Reporter this afternoon that the film will Not be releasing in theaters at all.
As we suspected, Salem’s Lot will be a straight-to-streaming release for the Max streaming service. THR notes, “No date was given, but sources believe a fourth quarter release is likely.”
Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, before getting ejected from the theatrical slate.
For what it’s worth, Stephen King has recently tweeted praise for the film.
King wrote earlier this year, “I’ve seen the new Salem’S Lot and it’s quite good. Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything.

The fate of New Line’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot has been sealed.
New Line parent company Warner Bros. Discovery will debut the vampire thriller on the streaming service Max later this year, the company said Tuesday.
No date was given, but sources believe a fourth quarter release is likely.
Veteran horror scribe Gary Dauberman, known for writing the It and Annabelle films and for helming Annabelle Comes Home, wrote and directed the movie whose distribution plans have been in flux since WarnerMedia, which owned New Line and Warner Bros., merged with Discovery Inc. in spring of 2022. The movie was originally due to hit theaters in September 2022; then after the merger, it was moved to April 2023. Later, it was taken off the theatrical release schedule completely.

Recently, the buzz around Hollywood is that WB/ Discovery is getting ready to take a massive $115 million write-down in content. Coyote vs Acme seems all but certain to be deleted, but apparently that’s not the only piece of content the company may be on the verge of scrapping. Indeed, the long-delayed adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot has been in limbo for a long time now, and many fans are wondering when (or if) the axe is going to fall.

Stephen King recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to question why Warner Bros. is holding back its new film adaptation of “Salem’s Lot,” based on King’s 1975 horror novel about a writer who returns to his hometown in Maine and discovers its residents are becoming vampires. The movie went into development back in 2019 and shot in Massachusetts in 2021. A theatrical release was once planned for September 2022, but the movie has yet to see the light of day come 2024.
“Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new Salem’S Lot and it’s quite good,” King wrote to his 7.1 million X followers. “Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. The new Salem’s Lot movie finished filming at the end of 2021: but there remains no sign of a release. More here.
If you’re keeping score, then it’s currently two films that Warner Bros has made in the last few years, that it’s elected to deleted and take the tax write-off. The fate of a third is surely about to be determined too. And now there’s a fourth film that seems stuck in limbo as well.
The movie is a fresh big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Salem’s Lot, that was originally going to be released in the spring of 2022. Filming wrapped up at the end of 2021, and it’s suffered a few release date bumps since then.
Gary Dauberman – who last directed Annabelle Comes Home – has seemingly completed his cut of the movie, and it’s a case of Warner Bros deciding what to do with it.

The Conjuring 4 has found its director after a long wait, confirming it as the last mainline film in the franchise. Michael Chaves will be directing the upcoming horror sequel, and sources have confirmed that it will be the final installment in The Conjuring Universe. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are expected to return for the movie, which is set to start filming in Summer 2024.
After nearly three years of waiting, The Conjuring 4 has finally found its director and confirmed itself to be the last mainline movie in the franchise. Created by James Wan, the hit horror franchise has largely revolved around the various cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, real-life married paranormal investigators played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in the mainline movies and spinoffs. It was confirmed in late 2022 that a fourth Conjuring movie was in development with original screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returning, though no director had been set.

The hugely successful Conjuring Universe is getting a brand new installment with The Conjuring 4, and THR reports tonight that Michael Chaves is on board to direct.
Chaves just directed Conjuring Universe installment The Nun II, and he also previously directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the main series’ third movie.
The Conjuring 4 is said to be the final installment in the main series, THR notes.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2) wrote the screenplay for the fourth movie.
THR adds, “Plot details are being kept six feet under but once again supernatural investigators Ed and Lorrain Warren will face creaky doors, shadows in the windows, inverted crosses, and a demonic possession or two. Stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are expected to return and the feature is eyeing a summer shoot in Atlanta.”
Also returning to produce are franchise mainstays James Wan and Peter Safran.

Annabelle! She's everyone's favorite hideous terror doll! The ugly porcelain figure has appeared in several "Conjuring" movies, first popping up in the original "The Conjuring" before starring in her own film series. And, just to make things extra scary, she's real. Sort of. The "real" Annabelle is actually a rather harmless-looking Raggedy Ann doll, but that wouldn't fly for the movies. So when it came time for Annabelle to make her big screen debut, she was redesigned into the grinning ghoul we all know and love/loathe. In honor of Annabelle and all her horrific mayhem, we've decided to go ahead and rank all of the "Annabelle" movies. For the sake of brevity, we'll only be counting the three films with "Annabelle" in the title, since those are officially her films. So let's get to it! And remember: if someone brings you home an ugly monster doll, just chuck that...

Gary Dauberman had a good thing going at Warner Bros. for several years. He worked on the screenplays for the company’s two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s novel It, scripted the Conjuring Universe films Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and The Nun, co-created the 2019 Swamp Thing TV show, and wrote and directed Annabelle Comes Home. But then he wrote and directed an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Salem’s Lot for the company… and two years after principal photography wrapped, they still haven’t figured out what they want to do with his Salem’s Lot. So it’s no surprise that Dauberman is now set up at a different company. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Dauberman has signed a first-look deal with Sony’s Screen Gems for feature films. He is expected to “create projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.”

Sony’s Screen Gems, behind recent horror movies including Insidious: The Red Door, The Pope’s Exorcist and The Invitation, is looking to make an even bigger mark on the horror space, The Hollywood Reporter informs us tonight. On that note, they’ve signed Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) to a first-look deal for the purposes of developing feature films in the genre.
THR notes, “The move comes as Sony seeks to rebuild Screen Gems, its division focused on lower-budgeted fare, into a more productive label, with horror being a top focus.”

Refresh for latest…: Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes very (very) narrowly missed the $100M mark globally in its opening weekend, but it’s as near as dammit with an estimated $98.5M through Sunday worldwide. The Francis Lawrence-directed prequel came in slightly higher than pre-frame projections overseas with $54.5M from 87 international box office markets. The drag on getting to the century milestone was domestic at $44M versus hopes for $50M+.
The top overseas market openings include the UK with a No. 1 of $6.7M, Germany also at No. 1 with $4.8M, China at a No. 3 of $4.5M, France with $4.1M at No. 1 and Mexico also at No. 1 with $3.7M. In general, we understand that Latin America saw some overperformance.
In China, there is no Maoyan audience score yet, though Douban critics have it at 7.1, on par with the first film and not the lowest of the franchise.

The Conjuring Universe is one of the most consistently successful horror movie cinematic universes. Watching the movies in release order allows viewers to follow a steady flow of the storyline and understand the hints and callbacks between films. The recommended viewing order begins with The Conjuring movies, followed by the Annabelle trilogy, The Curse of La Llorona, The Nun and its sequel, and finally the third Conjuring movie. This order provides the most enjoyable and comprehensive experience.

Warner Bros. has been keeping director Gary Dauberman‘s adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) on the shelf for a long time – and while a rumor recently surfaced that they may be sending the movie to the Max streaming service, we’re still waiting to see if that rumor is going to be debunked or confirmed. While we wait, King has decided to go ahead and share his thoughts on Dauberman’s film on his X account. Overall, King has a positive outlook on the new Salem’s Lot… even though it has diversions from the book that he didn’t agree with.
King said, “The Warner Bros remake of Salem’S Lot, currently shelved, is muscular and involving. It has the feel of “Old Hollywood,” when a film was given a chance to draw a breath before getting to business. When attention spans were longer,...

The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is still without a release date, but we did get a bit of an update on Halloween night earlier this week. According to the latest reports, Warner Bros. is toying with the idea of bringing Salem’s Lot straight-to-streaming sometime in 2024.
Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, before getting ejected from the theatrical slate altogether. As of now, Salem’s Lot still doesn’t have a release date. If this week’s latest update is accurate, the film will be debuting on the Max streaming service in the coming months.
Taking to Twitter this week, Stephen King himself has shared his honest thoughts on Gary Dauberman’s adaptation of his classic novel. And it sounds like he’s (mostly) a fan.

One of the biggest questions this year in terms of horror releases remains: Where’s the Salem’s Lot remake? According to Variety, the Gary Dauberman-directed Stephen King adaptation may be heading to Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform.
Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, before getting ejected from the theatrical slate altogether. As of now, Salem’s Lot still doesn’t have a release date.
While a Warner Bros. spokesperson told Variety, “No decision has been made about the film’s future distribution plans,” the outlet cites that “the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has created a growing need for Max content.” That makes Salem’s Lot a prime candidate, considering how long the adaptation has been shelved.
Perhaps, with vocal support from fans, Salem’s Lot may yet head to theaters as Evil Dead Rise did earlier this year.

It’s been well over a year since Warner Bros. removed the Salem’s Lot remake from its schedule, leaving fans wondering just when the movie will get released. According to Variety, the studio is considering releasing Salem’s Lot on Max rather than in theaters.
Variety’s report reads: “A source with knowledge of the back-and-forth says the move is not a reflection of the film’s quality but is due to the fact that the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has created a growing need for Max content. ‘Salem’s Lot’ is one of a few Warner Bros. films deemed to make the jump.” In response, a Warner Bros. spokesperson said, “No Decision has been made about the film’s future distribution plans.” If the studio really does decide to release Salem’s Lot on Max, I can only hope that it might see a theatrical release as well; it’s...

Ed and Lorraine Warren were legendary paranormal investigators who formed their own society and investigated terrifying hauntings. The Warren Occult Museum houses creepy and haunted objects, including the iconic Annabelle doll and cursed samurai armor. The museum also contains vampire coffins, cursed photographs, demon masks, and other unnerving artifacts with mysterious lore attached to them.
Ed and Lorraine Warren were some of the most legendary paranormal investigators of all time, with the married couple forming their own society -- the New England Society for Psychic Research (Nespr) -- and investigating some of the most terrifying hauntings of all time, including the Amityville hauntings, the Perron family hauntings, and the Enfield poltergeist case. Famously, the case files of the Warrens also helped to inspire The Conjuring movies, bringing Ed and Lorraine’s investigations to the big screen.

Annabelle is a step up from the first film, featuring the Warrens and introducing more potential spinoff monsters, with effective scares and likable performances. Annabelle: Creation (2017) is the best and scariest of the Annabelle movies, thanks to its talented director, period setting, great performances, and a chilling ending that connects to the first film.
The Conjuring universe's resident demonic doll, Annabelle, has so far starred in three films of the Annabelle film series, and just which Annabelle movie is best might garner some disagreement among fans. It may not measure up to a juggernaut like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Warner Bros. and producer James Wan still deserve a ton of credit for turning what could've easily been a one-off hit in The Conjuring into what should soon become a $2 billion-grossing franchise. That's all on a combined production budget of less than $140 million. Annabelle was the first villain to get its own Conjuring spinoff,...

“The Nun II” has set a streaming release date on Max just in time for Halloween weekend. The New Line horror sequel will hit Max on Friday, Oct. 27 so those looking for a new horror movie to watch before the spooky holiday will be in luck.
The latest film in the “Conjuring” universe and direct sequel to 2018’s “The Nun” opened in theaters on Sept. 8, so it marks a quick move to streaming even in the wake of the film’s box office success. It’s pulled in $257 million at the worldwide box office so far, which is under the $365 million that the first “Nun” movie pulled in but not too shabby for a budget under $40 million.
The streaming release no doubt serves to bolster Max’s visibility during a time of increased movie-watching as the Halloween season coincides with a surge in demand for horror films.

Gargoyles was canceled after Season 3 due to significant changes in production and a decline in viewership, leading to its unfortunate cancelation. Disney attempted to revive the Gargoyles franchise through a movie and a modern-day reboot, but these projects never came to fruition. Now, a live-action remake of Gargoyles is in development with James Wan's production company, hinting at a potentially darker adaptation than the original series. However, it remains uncertain if it will fill the void left by the original show's cancelation.
A live-action remake of Disney's Gargoyles is in development years after the original show was canceled for various reasons. In the early 1990s, kids' morning TV ventured into a unique realm of animation with Gargoyles, a series that stood out for its dark, gothic storytelling, complex characters, and rich mythologies. The show revolved around a group of ancient gargoyles who awaken in modern-day New York City. As...

“Gargoyles” could finally be returning to television, with a live-action reboot series currently in the works at Disney+.
Variety has confirmed that the Disney streaming service is working with writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster to develop a live-action version of the beloved animated show. Dauberman would serve as writer and executive producer with Wan also executive producing. Disney Branded Television is the studio.
The current logline for the project reads: “Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.”

Close to thirty years after their debut, the Gargoyles will be returning. THR reports that Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company are developing a live-action Gargoyles TV series for Disney+.
Gary Dauberman will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on the Gargoyles live-action TV series. There had been rumblings of a live-action Gargoyles movie since the animated series began. Jordan Peele even reportedly pitched a Gargoyles movie to Disney in 2018, but nothing ever came of it. There were rumours that Kenneth Branagh was attached to direct a Gargoyles movie earlier this summer, but Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman quickly shot it down. After so many years of rumours, it’s exciting that something is finally happening with the cult franchise.

Cult Disney animated series “Gargoyles” is getting resurrected in live-action series form, with two powerhouse horror names behind it. THR reports today that Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster banner are teaming up to remake the 1990s cartoon as a live-action series for Disney+.
Dauberman will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner for the series with Atomic Monster, the company run by Wan and Michael Clear, executive producing.
The original series premise “involved gargoyle statues moved from a castle in Scotland to modern day New York. Once in the Big Apple, the statues awaken from a thousand-year-old spell and take on the mantle of protecting the city, becoming, as the show’s narration gravely said, ‘stone by day, warriors by night.’”
The 90s animated series was produced by Walt Disney Television and centered on literal stone gargoyles that come to life and transform into protectors of NYC at night.

Signs, The Blair Witch Project, and The Conjuring are great examples of horror movies that create terror without killing any characters. Poltergeist and The Others use suspense and atmosphere to craft haunting scenes and explore themes of family and isolation. The Babadook and 1408 demonstrate that psychological horror and a sense of dread can be more terrifying than gore or death scenes.
From Signs to Annabelle Comes Home, horror movies can be incredibly scary even when nobody dies. The genre is often associated with blood and gore - a reputation arguably gained by the slew of low-budget b-movies that have proliferated the genre. This is not, however, a necessity and many great horror films have opted to use psychology and tension over a high body count.

Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.

The Nun II has surprisingly taken the top spot at the North American box office yet again, continuing its reign in its third consecutive weekend.
The Conjuring universe's The Nun II has gone past the $200 million mark, bringing the most successful horror franchise back on track. However, the result came at the expense of Expendables 4, aka Expend4bles, which turned out to be an instant flop.

The Expendables sequel experienced a disastrous opening, securing only $8.3 million in its debut weekend, almost half of the early estimations as well as that of the third entry. This marks the lowest start in the action series' history, indicating a fading interest in the franchise, and putting a big question mark on its future. This opening has also contributed to an unusually lackluster September for the industry, with this weekend...

The characters in The Conjuring franchise, including The Nun and Annabelle, are interconnected through various films, with ties to the main Conjuring movies. Valak, the demon nun, is the main antagonist in The Conjuring 2 and The Nun, and there are Easter eggs and theories that suggest a deeper connection between these two spin-off films. Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren are revealed to be part of the same bloodline, explaining why both characters are targeted by demons like Valak and Annabelle. The characters played by Taissa and Vera Farmiga are also related in the franchise.
The expansive universe within The Conjuring franchise is broad, with tons of characters that interconnect within a number of films, including making connections between movies like The Nun and Annabelle. This is typical, as all the movies tie back to one of the Conjuring films. The Curse of La Llorona had a tie-in with Father...

The Conjuring franchise has rejuvenated the paranormal horror genre, with nine movies in total, including sequels and spinoffs. The spinoffs, such as Annabelle and The Nun, played a significant role in propelling the franchise to its current success, but they and their sequels struggle to match the original two The Conjuring movies at certain points. While some entries in the franchise, like The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, are highly praised for their effective horror and storytelling, others, such as The Curse of La Llorona, fall short in execution but still provide an enjoyable viewing experience.
From James Wan's original The Conjuring to The Nun 2, the ConjurVerse has been rejuvenating the paranormal horror genre — though not all entries in the franchise are equal in quality. There have been nine Conjuring movies so far: two direct sequels, three spinoffs, and three spin-off sequels. The first original movie, starring Patrick Wilson...

The Nun 2 is matching the success of the original film at the box office, maintaining strong results during its second weekend. The movie is part of the Conjuring Universe, inspired by the real-life paranormal investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Nun 2 follows Sister Irene as she returns to confront the demonic nun Valak at a French boarding school, and is projected to surpass the original film's opening weekend gross.
The Nun 2 has taken two weekends to match its predecessor's opening, but it is nevertheless still turning out good box office results. The movie is the ninth outing in the Conjuring Universe, which is loosely based on the case files of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. A direct sequel to 2018's The Nun, it follows Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) returning to face off against the demonic nun Valak (Bonnie Aarons) when it starts haunting a French boarding school.

Move over, Marvel: The Conjuring Universe is the greatest modern cinematic universe.
The quality has been consistent. The mythology is complex without being confusing. The heroic human leads are among the finest horror protagonists of the 21st century so far. The demonic villains are often truly unsettling and despicable. Every chapter in the franchise has enriched what came before while setting the stage for what comes next. You think superhero fans have been eating well at the pop culture buffet? Horror fans have had it even better.
And now that there are eight films in the Conjuring Universe, some casual viewers or newcomers may have questions. After all, entering any ongoing film series can be a tricky proposition. Do you start with the best of the bunch and then pick and choose from there? Do you watch them all in release order? Or, in the case of something as timeline-happy as the Conjuring Universe,...

The following contains spoilers for The Nun II, now playing in theaters.
The Conjuring has been the most successful horror franchise for over a decade, and the hits keep on coming. The Conjuring spinoff movie The Nun II is looking to be another box office slam dunk for the series, and it's also largely seen as an improvement over its predecessor. Unfortunately, it also highlights a major opportunity that the James Wan property keeps missing.
One of the most iconic horror movie monsters is the werewolf, which hasn't been seen in the Conjuring Universe. That's despite there being so many similar concepts utilized, not to mention Ed and Lorraine Warren supposedly dealing with such a beast in real-life. The Nun II also features a werewolf in all but name, but the franchise may be running out of time to use an actual howling menace.
