Franco McCoy (Michael Mosley) is a walking parody of all of the shows in the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000) universe; most notable in his arsenal is a hamfisted use of overdramatic, punny wordplay and exaggerated sunglasses choreography, the infamous trademark of actor David Caruso as Horatio Caine on CSI: Miami (2002).
Jake does his best David Caruso impression, taking off his sunglasses while speaking and then putting them back on afterwards. He even does the signature screaming, in an imitation of the opening of almost every CSI: Miami (2002). The scream comes from The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again," which serves as the show's theme song.
In the opening post-credits scene, upon arriving at the crime scene, Jake says "Mamma Mia, that's a bloody pizza pie!" When Rosa expresses her disdain at the comment ("Ugh.") Jake: quickly excuses himself: "No, it's okay, I can say that. I'm half Italian." Andy Samberg is in fact part-Italian, a fact publicly revealed on the most recent episode of Finding Your Roots (S05E01 Grandparents and Other Strangers, airing Jan 2019, the month before this episode). Samberg had agreed to be on Finding Your Roots with the hope of helping his mother realize a life-long desire to identify her birth parents. Resarchers were successful and - in one of the show's most remarkable and satisfying episode's - it was revealed that Samberg's maternal grandfather was Sicilian.
Melissa Fumero was being interviewed by Seth Meyers shortly after the episode aired. During the interview, he mentioned that Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sean Astin and other well known celebrities who were fans of Brooklyn 99, and who had helped keep it going, have been on the show, but all he got was a mug shot which he said he would like.
Jake mentions one of the potential bad guys was someone who looked like Seth Meyers. In real life Andy Samberg and Seth Meyers worked on Saturday Night Live together and are really good friends.
