I'm in the minority who liked this
joscon-1661612 January 2021
Is it a great story? No. Is the acting awesome? Not really. Then why 6 stars? Because I found the entire thing pretty entertaining. While parts of the story were pretty easy to figure out early on, there were some twists which I found interesting enough to make this a better movie than others thought it was.

guilty pleasure that you don't really feel guilty about
mjfhhh15 January 2021
Derrick Tyler is a successful businessman who loves his wife, but during a trip to Las Vegas he cheats on her with a beautiful stranger. Upon returning home he becomes a victim of a violent home invasion which leads to an unexpected encounter with his one night stand from Las Vegas. Oh my, he wishes that he'd kept his pants on!

FATALE has a distinct vibe of the 90s about it and could have been a remake of UNLAWFUL ENTRY, a film with Kurt Russell and Ray Liotta.

I realise I enjoy recent work of Deon Taylor (the director): BLACK AND BLUE and THE INTRUDER both released in 2019 were down to basics thrillers, intense and fun to watch. FATALE is such a film, structured around Hilary Swank's character (detective Val Quinlan) it introduces a few surprises in the genre of so called "one night stand" thrillers, but then it evolves in a most predictable way.

The important thing about FATALE is that something is always happening, the action is propelled forward and the film ends in a flash. Whether you like the end result is a different story, but FATALE is the kind of guilty pleasure that you don't really feel guilty about. Hillary Swank's acting is also what makes the film very bearable!

As for the hidden meaning - white cop killing black people left right and centre is definitely a deliberate choice for the writers, making that cop a woman making this even more intense. Black people in the film are also depicted in a bad light, they are either gangsters, cheaters or murderers. Or plain stupid like the main character Derrick. So there we go.

But step away from political correctness and enjoy the movie for what it is - a cheesy femme fatale thriller straight from the 90s.

Not great, but doesn't deserve such harsh reviews
arod_8517 October 2021
The casting was kind of odd and Hilary Swank was not at her best. The story was interesting enough to finish the movie. It was not the most original and had some plot holes, but it was better than most of the reviews would let on.

Um loose end not tied??

Warning: Spoilers
I knew this movie was going to be crap before I even watched it. Nobody would give up everything they have to spend the night Hilary Swank. But as the hero drives off into the sunset one has to wonder why he wasn't under arrest for killing Hillary's ex-husband? Even if he didn't mean to do it the deed was still done and at the very least a manslaughter charge would be in the air.

Why all the hate?
Top_Dawg_Critic10 January 2021
Really shocked at the bad reviews... I really enjoyed it. Great directing, awesome sets, and the casting and performances were excellent. The story dragged on a little too slow, and either the pace should have been faster and/or some scenes trimmed down so the 102 runtime been around 85-90 mins. The score and cinematography were also on point. It's a well deserved 7/10 from me.

Mind-Numbing Stupidity
mujali-486773 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was in the mood for a good film in which I didn't have to think too much as I was a bit tired. But I didn't want to not think at all, which was what I got. Within the first 20 minutes I knew this movie was garbage, but I persevered nonetheless, maybe I was judging too hastily. Nope. Not one likeable character, to the contrary they were all amoral scumbags with no moral compass. The main character catches his wife in the act of cheating on him with his best mate and instead of having any remorse she squares up to him with a wry smile and says "dont act surprised." Wow, what sort of person would do that to their spouse? Even for Hollywood that is cold. Anyway I didn't feel sorry for him because he's just as bad too. All the characters in this film are awful human beings, and you can't have a decent movie without at least one person who has some kind of redeeming quality. Oh, in addition, there are enough plot holes to make a golf course with.

Caine got killed again..
o-v-geels9 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad movie. Particularly if you like the actors. I gave it a high rating because of that. Hillary Swank plays a good Psycho cop. I had fun watching it overall. Few scenes could have had better dialogue as there were a couple of unneeded obvious remarks/statements. In any case this picture deserves a 6 in my opinion. And yea, Caine got killed again. Took me straight back to the early 90s Menace to Society. One of the best movies ever made imo. I know this writing is not really a review but you can read the plot for yourself and make up your own mind.

Good thriller - worth a watch
english_artist10 January 2021
I nearly didn't watch this when I read the reviews and saw the cheesy 80' style cover image (nothing wrong with 80's I grew up in 80's) but I thought I would give it a go as I had a few hours to spare

I am pleased I did it was a good thriller which kept me interested all the way to the end and also kept me guessing in places to. Yeah there are better thrillers out there but this one is certainly worth the watch even just for the house featured and the views from it

Good thriller - worth a watch

Definitely worth watching, very entertaining & exciting
ahammaha-3199413 January 2021
This movie was very entertaining to watch, and I definitely enjoyed watching it. Yes it could have been better written. But it was still worth a movie night. Loved the main actors, the music score and just overall the energy. The plot could've been a little more thought out and believable. But nonetheless it's no where near as bad as these ridiculous critics are saying it is. I don't know what exactly they were trying to expect, an Oscar film??!

Didn't believe they made films this bad anymore
mikegibb-6041830 March 2021
There was a time when the cinema showed two films including a B movie. Then these dire films would be known as TV movies. Now they are correctly known as rubbish. And where rubbish is concerned Fatale scores highly. Ridiculous plot line and some truly amateurish acting. Swank must be really stuck for work if she gets mixed up with something as bad as this. Dross.

"What you see in the night isn't always what you see in the day."
classicsoncall23 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a perceptive viewer and have seen enough of these types of films, you'll know at the 1:08:40 mark that Val (Hilary Swank) did it, just about a second before Derrick Tyler (Michael Ealy) confirms it with his own suspicion. What Val did you'll have to watch the picture to find out, but know that from there on, the story line careens to an explosive ending with yet another twist that you'll probably see coming, as the gimmick has been used in countless movies. But while all this is going on, it does turn out to be a pretty good thriller that keeps you guessing until you don't have to. The picture does have it's share of clichéd dialog loaded with double entendre, as in my summary line, or when Val suggests to Derrick after a one night stand - "I don't go after something unless I know I can get it". Detective Val Quinlan is one determined police investigator with a personal goal who ensnares Derrick Tyler in a web of deceit of his own making, and you have to wonder just how bad one guy's luck could possibly get.

Horrid acting + another Fatal attraction
EvanKevelson30 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1. This film started with droll unenthusiastic acting... I get the feeling that Hillary Swank has turned into a Nicolas Cage and will do any script.

2. The second I saw Hillary was an investigating detective (despite history, daughter's injury, powerful ex that she would have lost her badge) the story line was very predictable.

I had to turn this boring excuse for entertainment off after 25 minutes while jumping sporadically to the 50 min mark.

NEVERTHELESS, ENJOYABLE.
nickeyblack3511 January 2021
I rather enjoyed this film. I see very low ratings, but it's at least worth a 7. It's definitely predictable, but it's entertainment. Swank was sexy, and believable. Ealy did a good job aswell.

Absolutely Implausible
rachelnstephens21 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I live in Vegas and first things first, nobody in the club is having a quiet conversation over drinks in the middle of the floor. Instead, imagine being 3 inches from someone's face while screaming "WHAT?!" over EDM music.

Also, Hillary Swank is TOO DAMN OLD to be in the club, especially solo. Actually, everyone looked too old to be in the club. And no nightclub is handing out cut crystal whiskey glasses, even if you do have a booth or bottle service.

So Steph Curry 2.0 & Hillary Swank somehow makeout in the club, (not shown, but would have to happen if this is a Vegas club: out of the club, through a casino floor, showing a room key to security to get to whatever hotel elevators) and then continue to the bed? YEAH RIGHT.

I cannot suspend my disbelief.

The first time Hillary said she forgot the combination to the hotel safe where SC2.0's phone was, I'd be on the phone with the hotel desk to send someone up. Nope, instead SC2.0 has sex again in exchange for his phone.

Murder for hire plot is a bit of an afterthought and not a well developed plot point. After a break-in, it just so happens that Swank is the detective and begins acting strange. Right then, any same person would speak to a cop and say that you need someone else to investigate because the detective is an ex lover and it's a conflict of interest.

Movie over.

Rest of the movie is Hillary Swank and SC2.0 making illogical decisions to somehow protect her job despite the fact SC2.0 owes her nothing and it's not illegal for him to have slept with her in Vegas before all of this happened.

There's a side story about Hillary Swank trying to kill her ex husband, but again, the motive was Implausible. The fact that she had a restraining order against her because of her ex that she repeatedly violated, and was still able to carry a gun as a detective made zero sense.

The movie was just ridiculous. Save your time and money.

Solid film, kept me guessing till the end!
crazyk-6026128 June 2021
I don't understand the low scores for this film! It tackles many important topics without being too on the nose. It's not perfect, but I found the film to be entertaining and I did not know what would happen next at any given time. I really enjoyed the sound track as well as the extremely talented cast (especially the two leads, Michael Ealy and Hilary Swank).

I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of thrillers, especially ones that tackle relevant issues in a tasteful way. Not quite as good as Get Out, but still worth a watch especially if you have HBO Max!

pretty good
tezzahols10 January 2021
The movie was pretty good, entertaining, and kept you interested enough to see what the outcome would be, maybe the haters don't know what a decent movie is, unless it's a 100 million dollar budget and has a lot of PC content, it's a good movie for a lock down, watch it and see for yourself.

I thought it was a pretty good story, good character development. But the backing soundtrack was really out of place and seemed inappropriate for the situations.

A lil bit of Unlawful Entry, a lil bit of Strangers on a Train n more from the 80s n 90s erotic thrillers.
Fella_shibby10 January 2021
I got tricked into believing the fake reviews which were posted the earliest. A fake reviewer described it as a taut thriller. It is boring n very predictable. Damaris Lewis is one helluva hot babe but she doesnt get that much footage.

In fact, the 80s n 90s thrillers at least have some erotic stuff.

Ther is a scene wher a guy observes someone planning to get intimate in a beach house, later he goes to another person's home, have sex ther n later goes to the beach house n a female is still in her dress inspite of the intimacy.

Simply implausible, and booooring on top of that

Warning: Spoilers
"Fatale" (2020 release; 102 min.) brings the story of Derrick, a married and successful sports agent in LA. As the movie opens, Derrick and his buddies are heading to a bachelor's party in Vegas, where Derrick meets Val, an LA investigative cop, and wouldn't you know, they end up in bed. When he returns to LA, the next night the house is robbed. The LA cops come out to investigate, led by Detective Quinlan, who turns out to be... Val. At this point we are 10 min. into the movie but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: this is the latest film from director Deon Taylor, whose previous film, 2019's "Black and Blue", was a gritty and intense police drama. It was hence all the more surprisng when I saw "Fatale" (as in: femme fatale), which is a complete dud. At first it starts out as a possible "Fatal Attraction" type movie, but then it morphs into a "whodunnit" and then it morphs yet again. So many plot twists! And with each new one, it becomes less credible, until we reach the "utterly implausible" stage and this film has officially jumped the shark. Even that might be forgivable, if it wasn't that the film is outright boring on top of that. At no time was there any tension or was I emotionally invested in anyone of these characters. Hilary Swank as Val tries the best she can with the weak material she is given. Michael Ealy as Derrick is just awful, I'm sorry to say. That's called acting?!? Last but not least the movie is about 10-15 min. too long for its own good and certain scenes could've been cut without losing any of the film's plot I wish I could be more positive about this film, and given the quality of "Black and Blue". "Fatale" turns out to be a major disappointment for me.

"Fatale" was supposed to open this summer, but a little thing called COVID-19 had other plans. The film finally opened the weekend before Christmas. The early Sunday evening where I saw this at was attended dismally (5 people in a large auditorium, including myself). Regardless, I cannot in good conscience recommend this movie to anyone, but of course don't take my word for it and check it out for yourself, be it in the theater, on VOD, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray.

Etertaining and worth watching
nicfran11 January 2021
Pretty good psychological drama. I like films with strong female leads and Hilary Swank was definitely that and Michael Ealy definitely delivered a stellar performance. I enjoy seeing films with diverse cast it just makes sense given the world we live in. The actress/model that played his wife was freakin' was Gorgeous. The acting in the film was very good. I noted that there were some parts that were a bit predictable. However, there were times that I honestly didn't know what to expect next so there is some level of unpredictability. Overall It was entertaining and I enjoyed watching it. It's definitely worth a watch.
