Well...
ivstefko2 December 2019
I LOVE mythology, so i was VERY disappointed. First of all There were exactly 4(!) mortal citizens in whole movie, so called "Valhalla" was empty place with just few guards, who looks as mortals despite fact, they werent (or shouldnt). Should also mentioned, that Gods (7?) are tired drunkies and perverts. Who wouldnt love this? And btw, Loki had dark hairs not dark skin, his skin was pale.

Sadly a missed opportunity.

There's no mistaking it, the Norse Eddas are composed of some brilliant stories. If your only exposure to the vibrant world of Norse mythology has been the highly entertaining yet very inaccurate MCU films, the original stories should definitely be on your reading list. Neil Gaiman's retelling is highly recommended. I was hoping that this film would be a fairly faithful retelling of the myths...I was wrong. To be fair, it was OK but only up to a point. I'm not familiar with the Danish comic book retelling that was the main source for this adaptation, but I am not inspired to read it having watched this. Too much emphasis is placed on two kids who barely get a mention in the original myths and there has been the totally pointless inclusion of a cutesy giant character who doesn't even provide the comic relief he was probably intended to bring (think Viking era Jar Jar Binks). On the plus side, the film looks good. Some people are stressing about the appearance of the Aesir in the film. In Norse mythology the deities were shape shifters so I'm not too bothered about casting choices (no, not all the Norse gods were fair skinned blonds as one reviewer on here mentioned; Thor in the Eddas was a redhead and Loki even took on the form of a female horse in one tale). Whereas Norse mythology presents gods and goddesses who have wonderfully human traits that make them rounded personalities, there is very little character development of what are, in this version, clueless, bickering two-dimensional tyrants. I have studied Norse culture and myth for over 30 years. I didn't hate this film, but found myself picking it to pieces as I watched it. I'm hoping that one day there will be an accurate adaptation of the Eddas. They are all such great stories, they don't need embellishment for a modern audience. These are stories that have endured for hundreds of years. As I say, the production design was decent and reflected the Norse view of their mythology before the later Christian influences crept in, but if you want to learn more about Norse mythology, for the time being at least, turn off the TV and read a book or listen to the BBC radio dramatisation of Neil Gaiman's retelling.

Sagas or not to Sagas
kosmasp1 May 2021
Right now Marvel and the MCU painted a picture for most moviegoers ... when you hear the names Thor and Loki, you expect different ... characters on screen. That does not mean that there are no other incarnations of them - other legends. And that is what you get here.

It is quite the weird movie with a weird story and some interesting character developments ... with some out of this world stuff. Whether you are able to dive into a fantasy world, where certain things can happen, will determine if you can enjoy this, as much as if you are able to detach this from other expectations you may have (see above). A more than decent low budget movie, with a stellar cast!

God awful performance!!!
martin-afl22 February 2020
Let's be honest: the original cartoons and the animated movie had something rarely seen: a deep story - with a sense of irony and comedy. This movie has none of it. The characters are flat as a pancake - without any depth and filled with clichees. The acting performances are uninspired and for some unknown reasons (according to the director??) do all males in norse mythology sound like a poor imitation of Batman. This was a huge disappointment

Far from Nordic Mythology
skagenpc20 February 2020
I love Nordic Mytology, but this is not that--- I'd wish the people making this movie would had read just a little about Nordic Mythology, before they made the movie, Thor is not spelled this way, he is Thundergod and in nordic his name is Tor. Loke is not dark skin, all our old gods were pale and had blond hair. The movie are strange and far from our old gods,

Way worse than the cartoon
andershenningsen3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It is worse written and performed than the old cartoon from 1986.

Loki is suddenly a black man. Thor sounds like an old hare man who's been drinking for too long. Thor walks like he himself. The children come up to Valhalla, meet all the Nordic gods... but are almost indifferent, as if it is very normal. Odin, with only one eye, is so badly made that it looks like a perpetual struggle to keep the 'dead' eye closed - give the poor man a pat on the eye. Quark looks just like the thick boy in the class with a couple of fangs in his lower mouth.

The way the gods speak to each other, their saying is very up to date.

Fighting outside the cave where Thor and Loki are trapped is okay, but certainly does not resemble gods fighting. The fight inside, it's far worse. Odin and the King of the Jotnar are just like two tired and old wizards with no magic left.

The movie would be better served with a lot of funny lines and made into a comedy than..... whatever they've tried on here.

Pretty good!
Killianulv23 February 2020
Well, have been waiting to see this movie ever since I heard it went into production, I grew up reading the comics and have seen the animated version many times which in Denmark is a classic. So thought either they would mess it up completely or hit the spot, neither happened, it is like stuck in between, they changes the story a bit to make it new a fresh, it is a bit off here and there when you know about the old scandinavian culture, but it still makes it watchable! So all in all a decent flick, specially good for kids that needs an easy story, decent acting, apart from a few roles that could have been casted better.

Puratet brown stuff
elijenis14 April 2020
This is an insult to the source material. I don't care if it looks close enough, the story and characters are non existing. They have completely rejected the entire story, and all the characters from the original cartoon, and comics. The movie is boring and not worth your time and money.

It seems like someone didn't get to make a Valhalla inspired Christmas Calendar, and then violated the Valhalla movie to make that vision come to life. I was literally just waiting for little elves and gnomes to appear, as they would have just as little to do with the story as this utter garbage that was in it had.

And where is Heimdal? Where are all the characters?

Seriously, all they had to do, was to take the cartoon script and just turn it into a movie. But no, that would have been a good movie. This is just boring.

Pretty much faithfull to the original "sagas"
carstenjermiin14 February 2020
-Compared to other interpretations of the nordic mythology - this was spot on. allthough I missed a lot of details, eg I missed the lowered ocean levels after thors drinking competition and the running contest with ones own shadow. What about Frey, I'am always looking forward to see the film-makers imagination of her.... very disappointing. Anyway, this ways a good experience, a film cut to the bone, trustful to the story. (one last thing - a wooden door should be built with a diagonal braces starting from the top of a door - away from the hinge and downwards. ending close to the lower hinge - otherwise it would collapse within few weeks.... ohh please dont make that mistake again, Ive seen it made false soo many times)

At last a film thats different and brave
maskedman10669 October 2020
I live for movies like this, it is brave and gritty, not the usual holywood fodder. The gods are flawed as the sagas signify, the actors are beleivable...not pretty boys or half starved models, though its not 100% acurate to the sagas and many main characters not present...it was brave enough to make the mythology work for its own take....I was thoroughly hooked from the start and nothing angered me about its interpretation, I see a lit of bad reveiws here....please judge for yourself, I am a heathen and a researcher of norse mytholology and I personally loved this - why? Because it has a real beleiveable feel...not glamorised and a holywood style affair. I was entertained

For the money, pretty good
tommy-9776121 January 2024
The local online movie database in our country is a bit of a pain in the crack to get accepted to. You are required to rate 200 movies and then you have to take a movie trivia quiz, which is timed and can be only repeated once if you want to write reviews. Seeing the reactions for this movie made me go trough that whole process just so I could write a review myself.

Currently, the rating on that database stands at around 31%, which I feel is really unfair. The rating here on IMDB is about right. If you go into this movie expecting a marvel movie, you'll be disappointed. This is a cheap movie about northern mythology, that doesn't hold your hand. The characters are not introduced, as the target audience is expected to already know the mythology. The child characters are annoying, but it is nice seeing some of the myths come to life. Given the budget, which was microscopic in today's context, the movie looks pretty good. A fine passtime for the mythology lover. I don't know how well it relates to the animated movie it remakes as I have never seen it.

Danish actors only got worse since the 80's
mikestorjusen24 April 2020
The movie is like watching a bad play in the teater but with special effects, for some reason Tor is an old angry man with a weird Batman voice, For some reason unknown a guy from the Middle East is Loki in a movie about Norse mythology, Many people was really excited about this movie coming and they just put the cartoon to shame, this movie is only about empowering the female character Røskva.... Bad acting, bad story, bad characters they all should be ashamed. Seriously the story from the cartoon is there but instead they need to focus on Røskva (and I need to say this how many female power characters do women need to feel equal? Female power characters has been in focus since the 80's) Give me story not female empowerment....

Lack of enthusiasm in cinematic form
KaZenPhi30 November 2020
Valhalla is but a mere shadow of everything it could have been. I'm not even sure where to start describing how this movie failed so I'll start with the few positives. There is some mid-tier to good production design here, especially in the hall of the gods itself, I like the look of the rainbow bridge Bifröst and there's the occassional nice vista.

However it's not enough to save the film which is lacking in every other aspect. First and foremost the acting is almost uniformly awful, especially from the child actors that are just wet blankets. I'm not sure whether to blame the actors or the director here, especially with the main girl playing Røskva. It's painfully obvious how much of her scenes were shot second unit, on green screen or much later, completely unrelated to whatever she was supposed to be reacting to at the moment. The other actors fair a smidgen better but not by much. Generally the acting has a strangely robotic quality. The constant use of close-ups and inappropriate shaky hand-held camera work makes the film a visual mess without any noticeable style which isn't helped by the terrible editing and continuity. The music is peak mediocrity. It reaches such a depth of forgettability that it becomes noticeable again as oppressively dull.

Everything about this film is just so awkward, dull and off. I was shocked to find out the director had made films prior to this, because it feels like you're watching the work of a first time or student director. This had the promising ingredients of a fun 80s style fantasy film, but it doesn't even reach the quality level of an Albert Pyun schlockfest.

One of the worst movies lately. From uninspired music to poor actors performance. The plot? Well, I strongly believe someone was drunk!

Massive disappointment So Amaturerish
roxmewild7 October 2021
As a Huge Lover of Norse Mythology I was very excited to watch this I had finished watching Raganourk a new Norse show which I loved and even found the subtitles easy and didn't affect my viewing enjoyment This movie however was awful and to be honest it was apparent from the first scenes but due to my love of all things Norse was determined to watch this movie till the end. The story was very pedestrian and not at all exciting the acting very high school quality and I found it hard to believe that the movie was made in 2019 as it came across set wise so bad the best part was the Wolf 🐺 but that was probably computer generated so not hard to achieve .

Don't know rhe writers producers or director but will make a note .

Not as bad as I was expecting.
wms5916 January 2022
Whilst I agree that the acting is generally almost as bad as its budget; this movie does have one big redeeming feature.

That would be the young actress Cecilia Loffredo. She completely carried this film, whilst the others sleepwalked through it.

Strange
anders-n-aa-larsson24 July 2021
Have never seen children take mushrooms and getting high, in a movie aimed at children before. But what's missing is Freja prancing around scantily clad with her boobs practically falling out and making everybody around her horny out of their minds, like she does in the comic books this movie is based on.

Boring, don't bother. And they made Loki black. So clearly they don't care about this POS film so neither should you.

Brilliant - Real Thor as Imagined it would be
stormtrooper10123 January 2021
This was so much better than the Hollywood treatment, this actually felt real, as I imagined what Asgard would be like, none of that Holywood technologically advanced and old world at the same time stuff. Not sure what I was expecting when I started to watch the film, but really enjoyed it; the acting and direction could have been better, but a great watch nevertheless.

commercial prod, waist of time
justwedo13 November 2020
Worst presentation of Valhalla, they showed it as an empty place with some drunk gods waiting for the little kid that we don't understand how they found her to put the Valhalla back in order !

this film just destroyed the image we all have of Thor, Locky, Oden.

it's t really shocking how they got rewarded for their production!

So...
cRnrg0d8 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I like Norse Mythology, I think it's amazing.

I found some very interesting points in the film, they are:

The thor resurrect one of his goats after devouring it.

Adding the importance of humans to mythology, essentially at the end when Roskva comes into contact with fenrir.

Having placed a giant beside Asgard.

Access to bifrost will be granted by gods without Heimdallr.

Thor is not represented by a strong young man with blue eyes and blond hair.

Thor told the story about the fenrir in beginning.

The Nordic mood added to the film, and the importance of goats to Thor.

However, due to the negative points, equilibrium occurs. Due to not having the copyright to be able to explore Loki, this greatly diminishes the potential that the film could have.

The villain has no enriching potential.

They could have explored the other gods.

The fenrir was very poorly produced by CG.

The eye of Odin idea was cool, but it looked like Gandalf from LOR to me. The wisdom that it should have was not explored at all.

For those who like Norse Mythology, the movie is worth seeing for some interesting details, but it's not something that will make you admire it for the rest of your life.

Thor
BandSAboutMovies9 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A remake of the 1986 animated film Valhalla, this film takes advantage of Thor's popularity to tell the story of Røskva and Tjalfe, two Viking children who travel from Midgard to Valhalla with the gods Thor and Loki to face the Jotnar, the Fenrir wolf and Ragnarok.

Shot on location in Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, this has characters that look nothing like the Marvel films. That's great because this movie demands to stand on its own two feet.

Røskva and Tjalfe become the servants of the gods yet learn that the ones that they worship are just as human and filled with issues as all of us. Yet can they help those very same flawed gods when the end of all there is looms large?

I thought this was going to be one of those WalMart sneaky films where people buy it because they think it's the real Thor, but this feels closer to the mythological Thor than the more popular Marvel movies. It's definitely worth a watch.
