Fascinating Technology Innovations and Biblical Allusions!
13 October 2020 | by henryshearSee all my reviews

I feel strange somewhat writing this review because I am not a fan of science fiction, but I did love this show. I thought that the writing and premise was interesting because there are so many unknowns regarding the Mithraic religion, the androids Mother and Father as well as Kepler-22b.

There were very few actors that I recognized in this series, it was only Travis Fimmel from his work on Vikings and Matias Varela who portrayed Jorge Salcedo in the third season of Narcos. Otherwise, I had not seen any of the actors which was strange for me. I like to think I know actors pretty well, but the casting department decided to undermine that belief. However, the casting was tremendous. There are several child actors and I thought that all of them were talented and versatile in all of their scenes.

Mother and Father (Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim) were amazing in their roles as androids that were responsible for raising the next generation of humanity. They seemed completely void of certain human traits, but not emotional ones. Often, when I see androids depicted they cannot emote and are one-dimensional, but both have feelings of anger, happiness, joy and more. This made the plot interesting because these emotions could cloud their judgement and force them into dangerous situations.

The androids were one of several mysteries present in the show. There were unknown aspects of their programming and capabilities, which continuously kept the viewer wondering what would unfold. Not only was the technology unpredictable for the androids, but also for the members of the Mithraic religion. Their ark, the ship that brought them to Kepler-22b, was host to a simulation, violent weapons of destruction and a particularly disturbing way to punish criminals. Technology was very much a mystery throughout the first season, but there also seemed to be a supernatural element as well.

Kepler-22b has a history that none of the characters, as well as viewers, are aware of. There are creatures, strange pits and one single voice that sparks a connection between some of the key protagonists. For a show that focuses so much on technology there are religious, spiritual storylines that happen concurrently. Not to mention the fact that some of the prophecies the Mithraic believe in seem to be coming true on this strange, foreign planet.

This series greatly surprised me and each episode serves a purpose in the overarching narrative. I highly suggest to watch it, the premise is fascinating and it felt like a breath of fresh air! Hopefully you recommend it to another friend and notice your own observations! I hope you enjoy it!!!
