- On Earth in the 21stt century, a spaceship plummets out of orbit and the pilot Adam Lang tries to deploy the module parachute.
In a grocery store, Jake Willis chases a teenager and tackles him. Jake puts the teenager under arrest for shoplifting, but the manager Joyce lets the teenager go and tells Jake that he can't tackle people. Jake insists that he's a police officer but on a break, and Joyce figures it isn't working.
In Peru, Two Girls Roaming blog stars Jamila Velez and Gabriela Camera go to a river and discover that the river they were coming to see is wrecked. Jamila tells her friend Gabriela that they're not sleeping there. They sent up tents and go to bed, but Jamila hears birds flying overhead and goes out. She hears birds screeching in the darkness, and one of them flies down at her.
Jake is drinking in a pub, and the European Space Agency releases a statement about Adam apparently having died. Jake stares at the TV in shock, then checks his text and finds messages from Adam asking Jake to find and help him.
The next morning, Gabriela wakes up and discovers Jamila is gone. She goes out to the trashed window, and a dead bird falls down in front of her. Ryan walks up and tells her not to touch it, saying something is wrong with the birds.
In Hong Kong, Jake follows the tracker on his phone and it tells him he's arrived at his destination. He buzzes the nearby metal door and when he gets no response, he kicks at it. Graham and Yasmin come up and Graham asks why he's interested in the door. Jake identifies himself as a police officer and says that a missing person is inside the building. Yasmin says that there's the people with skeleton keys and unlocks the door, and the three of them go inside.
In Madagascar, Suki Cheng walks up to her outdoor lab and Aramu greets her. The Doctor runs up, yells for help, and goes to a man lying on a nearby beach. Suki and Aramu run up to help her pull the man out of the water, and the Doctor explains that she gave her mates errands.
Gabriela wonders what Ryan is doing there, and he offers her his bag to check. As Gabriela goes through it, she says that she Jamila the night before. Gabriela pats Ryan down and is impressed he works out, and explains that she and Jamila are Two Girls Roaming. Ryan says the marking on the bird isn't natural and picks it up with a cloth, and says that he's trying to figure out why they're dying. Gabriela gets a text saying there was an ambulance call one mile away.
Jake asks if the European Space Agency sent Yasmin and Graham to find Adam. They have no idea what he's talking about, and Yasmin says that unusual energy readings are coming from the building. In the shadows, someone watches them.
The Doctor, Suki, and Aramu get the man up the beach and realize he's wearing a U.S. Naval uniform. The Doctor says that a U.S. submarine went missing in the Indian Ocean and she's been checking the tide patterns for survivors. She introduces herself and the man, Zach Olson, says that he's not safe. There was something in the sub and the captain tried to raise it but it was too late. Markings on the man's face calcify and he disintegrates and seconds, and the Doctor says that there's some kind of alien connection between the submarine, the birds, and an alien signal in Hong Kong. Aramu points out that she said "alien".
Ryan and Gabriela track the ambulance to no one is at the desk. They go in and find the place seemingly abandoned. There's a dead bird on the floor, and they hear something bang in the distance. They follow the noise and find broken quarantine barriers. Ryan leads them into the morgue and they find a covered body on a table. Jamila is underneath the sheet, alien markings organism on her face. Ryan calls the Doctor and says that there's something she wants to see.
When Ryan touches the markings, Jamila opens her dead white eyes and convulses. Ryan pulls Gabriela away, saying that Jamila isn't alive. The Doctor runs in and agrees with him, and figures whatever killed Jamila is still attacking her body. The marking spread and Jamila disintegrates, and the Doctor notes that whatever is happening is more dangerous than she thought and it's spreading. She asks Ryan if he's heard from Graham and Yasmin.
Graham checks his scanner and confirms that whatever is giving off the readings is on the other side of a door they've found. Jake kicks the door down and they go in. Inside is alien technology, Adam laying in the middle of it. Yasmin activates it and Jake wants to take off the machinery, but Yasmin and Graham warn against it. As Jake tells Adam that he's there for him, Yasmin calls the Doctor and says that they've found the source of the energy and the missing Adam. Meanwhile, Adam tells Jake to get out because "they" will come.
Two masked humanoids come in and open fire with blasters, Graham yells at Jake to get Adam out of the machinery, and Yasmin grabs a piece of technology and uses it as a shield. The shooters hesitate and she realizes the technology must be valuable. Once Jake frees Adam, the group heads for the door. Jake says that he's an ex-copper and doesn't have backup. One of the humanoids confronts them, and Jake kicks him down and grabs his blaster. He shoots the other humanoid, disintegrating him.
The Doctor arrives and wonders why the humanoids didn't register when she scanned for them earlier. The Doctor pulls the breathing masks off of one of the humanoids and confirms it's alien, and recognizes Adam. Adam says that he's feeling terrible, and admits that he didn't factor him into her calculations.
The group goes out to the alley where the TARDIS is parked. Inside, Gabriel is staring at the interior in shock. Ryan tells her he doesn't know if it's an optical illusion, and says that they'll figure out what happened and put it right. They look outside and find themselves in an alleyway in Hong Kong. The others run out of the building, and Yasmin says that she's going to go back to get the device. The Doctor warns that it's too dangerous, but Yasmin insists that they have to figure out how Adam's disappearance is connected to the other events. Gabriela offers to go with Yasmin, and the Doctor gives them one hour.
The Doctor dematerializes the TARDIS and Jake tries to take in the extended dimensions. She takes a blood sample from Adam and examines him, and Adam talks about how seeing Earth from the International Space Station changes everything. Aramu and Suki call and the Doctor materializes the TARDIS in front of them. She comes out and asks if she and her friends can make use of Suki's lab.
As they go to the lab, the Doctor tells Suki that they saw a similar death to Zach's and are trying to work out how they're linked. Graham helps Jake with Adam, and the two men disagree on whether they're married or separated. Jake points out that he came halfway around the world for Adam, and Adam tells him that it was seven months too late.
The group arrives at the lab and Aramu tells Ryan that there are non-local birds in the area. He says that other birds have started to come as well, and the Doctor wonders why they're coming there. She wants to get hold of one to analyze, and Ryan says he has a dead bird. Graham comes out of the lab where Adam is and says that he's in a bad way, and the Doctor warns that the birds are watching them. Aramu offers to keep an eye on them, and the others go inside.
Yasmin and Gabriela enter the building and Yasmin admits that she's never seen "Two Girls Roaming". They check the alien technology and Yasmin figures that it's part of a triangulation of signals with two other locations... on in Madagascar. One of the humanoids comes over and the two women hide. The humanoid touches a device and disappears, and Yasmin figures that it's a teleport station. She suggests that they follow the humanoid.
In the lab, the Doctor examines Ryan's bird. She asks him to dissect it for her and admires Suki's lab, then asks for her for antibiotics. Suki confirms that she has it, and the Doctor tells Graham and Jake to rig up an IV into Adam. The Doctor downloads her scanning readings from her sonic into Suki's computer to examine them, and Suki explains that they're working on a marine filtration system.
The Doctor scans Adam's blood sample and stares at it in shock. She then tells Adam that he's infected with an alien bacteria that is latching onto life forms and killing them, and she doesn't know how to stop it. Jake walks out, shocked.
Gabriela wonders if they're going to follow the creature without knowing where it went, and Yasmin says that they're going to do it. After Gabriela agrees, Yasmin touches the teleport station and they disappear.
Graham goes out after Jake and says that he knows Jake is worried about his husband. He assures Jake that Adam is with good hands with the Doctor, and asks what Adam meant about "seven months too late". Jake explains that he was supposed to say goodbye when Adam took off in the ISS, and admits that he's not good with commitment or emotions. The ex-cop says that he wallows in being unreliable because Adam is so impressive, and figures that if Adam is that amazing, he can't love Jake the way he says it does because it doesn't make sense to Jake. Graham tells Jake that Jake is punishing himself.
Gabriela and Yasmin arrive in alien tunnels and start exploring. Yasmin figures that it's an alien colony, and Gabriela sees a submarine conning tower ahead.
Suki has gene-sequenced cultures from Adam and the bird, and suggests that they might be able to engineer an antidote to the virus. Jake comes in and realizes that he's getting worse. Graham runs in and tells the Doctor that Aramu said the birds are getting worse. Ryan has confirmed the dead bird is filled with plastics, and the Doctor realizes that the birds ate the plastic, and the pathogen is feasting on the plastic and taking over the birds. She works out that micro filtration filter out micro plastics in humans, meaning that humans are filled with plastics. Humans are poisoning themselves as well as the planet, and an alien bacteria came to Earth and found a feast.
Outside, the birds fly down and attack Amaru before he can run into the lab. Inside, the Doctor studies the bird's natural enzymes and says that two strains from Peru are fighting back, holding it back to allow natural decomposition. She says that Ryan bringing the bird from Peru might have saved the world. Suki figures that if they splice the enzymes they could create a supercharged virus, and the Doctor agrees. The Doctor calls Yasmin, who tells her that they followed one of the humanoids and found the missing submarine. The lab in Hong Kong was sending signals to two locations, in the Indian Ocean and Madagascar.
The Doctor looks at Suki and tells Yasmin to sit tight. She then confronts Suki, who says that the Doctor has really helped her. They call the virus Praxeus and it knows the Doctor is on to it, and uses an alien device to teleport away. The birds swarm the building and the Doctor says that they have to get out. When the birds fly through the skylight, the Doctor warns everyone not to let the birds scratch them or they'll be infected. They grab the samples and Graham tosses the Doctor an oar to beat off the birds.
The group gets out and runs for the TARDIS, and the birds follow them. They get inside just in time, and the Doctor dematerializes the TARDIS and heads for Yasmin's location. She figures the birds could spread Praxeus world-wide, and Adam tells her to test the antidote on her. Jake refuses to let him, but Adam tells him that it's not his choice to make.
Gabriela and Yasmin find the dead humanoid on the floor, and Yasmin pulls off its mask. Its face is covered in the same markings as the others.
The Doctor hooks up Adam to the TARDIS console so it will make more of the antidote if it works. She injects Adam, and the TARDIS r3ematerializes. She leaves with Ryan and Graham, and Adam looks at Jake and chuckles.
The Doctor and the others find Yasmin and Gabriela in the colony, and the Doctor says that it's an alien construct but they're below the Indian Oceans in a gyre where the current have trapped pollution above them. Praxeus was created there, and birds spreads it around the world. Yasmin is disappointed that she didn't discover an alien planet.
In the TARDIS, Jake sits with Adam and asks how he's feeling. Adam says that he's dying, and Jake tells him that it's not allowed. His husband takes his hand and asks him to stop dodging life.
Yasmin leads the Doctor to the humanoid, and she realizes that it hasn't disintegrated because of its alien physiology. The Doctor figures that they're experimenting with Praxeus to find a cure.
Monitors activate in the TARDIS, some showing Adam's life signs.
The Doctor finds Suki emerging from a chamber, and she says that she's the last of her crew. She draws a gun on them and asks how they got there, and the Doctor asks her why. Suki explains that Praxeus devastated her planet, and they sent out lab-ships trying to find a cure. The Doctor realizes that Suki is infected but the mutation is slower, and Suki admits that they brought Praxeus there to try and find a cure in a plastic environment.
Suki explains that they crash-landed and the bacteria infected. The ship's energy disrupted Adam's space shuttle, causing it to crash. The Doctor realizes that the bird scratched Suki, and warns that the cure they created is for human but won't work on Suki's race and they're not sure if it will work on humans. Suki tells them to stay out of her way and goes into her ship.
The Doctor follows Suki into her space ship and warns that the blaster could disrupt the fuel cells if Suki fires it. The ship has organic fuel cells, and the Doctor says that together they can work together and find a cure for Praxeus. The infection spreads across Suki's body and she disintegrates. The Doctor walks out and tells the others that Suki is dead, and she needs a crew in the ship. Jake comes out with the cured Adam and the antidote the TARDIS manufactured and volunteer to go into the ship.
The crew go into the ship, load the fuel cells with antidote, and set it to fly into the atmosphere and disperse the antidote, killing Praxeus. The Doctor warns that the ship will rip a hole in the world and they'll be crushed under the ocean. She orders everyone out after setting the autopilot, but the autopilot fails. The Doctor orders everyone out, warning that it's too late to fix the engines. Jake stays behind and pilots the ship up, and contacts the TARDIS. Adam says that he doesn't want it for Jake, but Jake says that he needs it for himself.
Jake asks for directions, and the Doctor tells him what to do. Adam realizes the ship is going to break up, and Jake tells him that he's sorry he wasn't at the launch. Now he's not dodging, and tells Adam not to say that he never listens to him. Jake disperses the antidote and then the ship starts to explode. The Doctor materializes the TARDIS around Jake, rescuing him, and Adam kisses his husband.
Later in Madagascar, the Doctor drops off Jake, Adam, and Gabriela. Jake half-jokingly wishes he could get a statue for saving Earth, and Adam says that they're going to have a honeymoon. Gabriela offers to go with them, and they say that they'll take the planet from there. The Doctor and her companions leave in the TARDIS.
