Movie full of nice elements
gjurkaitis22 November 2019
I like the story, simple, honest touching. The plot and dialog are slow, and way off from any holiwood movie, feels like lower budget Scandinavian movies.

Not bad, not all to good at the same time though
Derache3 November 2019
This was a good concept, with an okay script, okay characters, an okay story, and less than mediocre imagery. However, it wasn't bad, it was definitely an interesting watch, just probably not something I would recommend for or against, but not because its very abstract or something, its not. Overall, this film was okay, a 6/10, It was a interesting watch, but not much more.

Fun ideas
kosmasp7 March 2020
And kind of a chapter movie. While the movie has a central cool idea, it is chopped or rather split into different timelines. Which is fine and gives the movie a chance to explore different themes. Might also make it difficult to follow our main character in some instances or completely get a grip on him (pun intended).

I don't know if the human body is able to actually defy gravity, but no matter if this is based entirely on Fiction or could be something that is genetically possible (if quite out there) - the movie is well made and the story is enticing enough

Glacial pace
ericobnn3 November 2019
This is one of those movies that takes its sweet time with a scene way longer than it should. For example, one scene shows the main character's mother taking him to school for the first time. It shows them parking the car, opening the car door, walking down the street to the school entrance, entering it, going down the hall, only for her to stop and decide he's not going to school after all... and then showing them walking down the hallway again, opening the door again, walking back step by step to the car again. What should have taken maybe 15 seconds (enter the school, change mind, exit it) ended up taking a whopping 2 minutes of screen time! Characters also talk really slowly in general. The movie could have been half its length if it had a sensible editor to cut out the fluff. Every other element of the story, apart from the anti-gravity gimmick, is also clichéd, boring, and ultimately squanders the potential of its interesting premise.

For much better movies that explore the theme of anti-gravity people, try Upside Down (2011) and Patema Inverted. For a much better movie that explores the theme of a person born with a unique fantastical condition, watch The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Any of these three films is much more worthy of your time than this slog that doesn't respect the audience's time and patience.

Sweet film in the magical realist style
basiliskos-7740622 January 2023
The Man Without Gravity is on one level a simple story of childhood first love that later blossoms into a mature relationship. But along the way the film makes some astute, even cutting, observations on the character of village life, the rapaciousness of the TV and publishing worlds, and the ways in which people can be judged unfairly without bothering to really discover who they are.

This film is a treat for those who don't switch off their brains when they sit down to watch. It SHOWS you more than it TELLS you, and it does not rely on cheap thrills or gratuitous violence to stimulate an emotional response. The script is spare and the pace is brisk, but the actors are all very good and they keep your interest with their humanity, while avoiding pathos.

The story is coherent but...
whitefire-24 November 2019
I like contrast, but combining "this man can fly!" with "let's try as little action as possible" is like adding sugar to melted cheese. Some things just don't go well together. Also, if you make a drama, you would expect some dialogue? This feels more like a still photo show with a word here and there to make the story coherent. Soo boring.

Maybe, just maybe, it was an attempt at raising the hopes of all those incapacitated people in their wheelchairs, some allegory perhaps, a way to show them that they can still soar in the sky just using the power of their mind.

Very cruel, if so.

No, I was not fond of this movie. I only guess that some people may enjoy such psychology-oriented action-free movies. In recognition of that fact I award this slow boiling soup 4 stars.

Interesting modern tale
alutesthome15 January 2023
A very pleasant movie with characters from the daily life mixed in a strange way. The story of a gifted boy that defy gravity. From the beginning of his life through the different stages of his growth, this movie gives us the sense of a superhero but the margen inside of that this superhero is getting abused by fame and of course his route of zenith to nadir. In this everyday fairytale comes into his present his past and his future.

Fortunately he stays faithful to his beliefs and doesn't let himself incorporate completely to this fame burst. Although of this sudden fame he stays the same inside and brings the story to a promising end.

Wasted time
ivanapopovich-9016231 January 2021
This is the worst movie I've ever seen. The idea seemed interesting, but it was developed into something slow, boring and empty. Not worth watching.

Super Fun Film and also a Primer on Magical Realism
markkbranson13 February 2020
I have taught English language and literature for over 40 years. One thing that has always challenged my students is the concept of "magical realism." With "The Man Without Gravity," I have a tool that makes teaching this genre (perhaps??) easier and FUN to do.

I happened onto this by pure accident, but from the opening sequence, I was immediately struck by how this film echoes of Márquez's story, "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings." Yes--the conceit is similar: a man can "fly." But both reveal deep concerns about "normalcy" and how we are afraid of things that are outside the narrow and "prestige" defined range.

What works in this film? First, the plot is magical: we see an infant born float from his mother's birth canal toward the ceiling attached to "earth" only through the intact umbilical cord. That image was compelling. But we move forward to where this boy meets and falls in love with a girl. Circumstances separate them, but they are reunited for a happy ending. OK--I'm a sucker for this plot device, but the way we are led through it is compelling.

The acting is lots of fun. The two leads: Elio Germano (Oscar, the protagonist) and Silvia D'Amico (Agata, his love) are fun to watch and we pull for them as children and as adults. They have an innocence in their faces which I relish and which compels my empathy and joy for them.

The directing is OK, too. This film could easily have gone overboard, but it depends on simple SFX that work and also maintains the focus on the two central characters. Marco Bonfanti-who also contributed to the story-manages the pace and images to keep engaged with our characters. One quick reference: see the scene where Oscar and Agata are running thru the umbrella shrouded streets. It is a joyous sequence.

Lastly, I refer once more to the magical realism. Tho' I am aware of some films that have attempted this concept, I believe this one carries it off extremely successfully. We are invited into a world where we accept that marvelous things can happen. And ultimately, the marvel is young love growing into mature and lasting love.

Take an hour and a half and relish this movie. Some who discard it, perhaps, don't realize how magical realism is an important 20th century genre and that this film does a great job of showing us the magic and the realism of love.

I expected something interesting but it turns out to be just plain like tap water and honestly a bit boring and does not worth spending the time.

It could be a better movie
reynaleal-655776 November 2019
They did not take advantage of the great imaginative content and it ended up being a movie made because, without a good background story.

Warning: Spoilers
One of the things I've ever heard a woman say in a movie. Than the cute little girl grows up to be a hooker? My word. Thought there was potential but I was mistaken. A missed opportunity.

An Italian Work of Art
u-emoli4 November 2019
It is definitely not for the masses but this is a wonderful minimalist, sweet and unique work of art. Reminiscent of Fellini's work, it is a light hearted and delicate surrealist film. The story develops in very unexpected absurd ways through to the end. The realistic acting, although annoying at the beginning, is very effective. Elio Germano is a fabulous actor.

The worst emotionless opening
thinknirmal18 November 2019
What is a movie that doesn't create the right feelings? There's a flying baby in the labour room and no one reacts the way one would react. It sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Hard to believe this film passed any kind of internal review.

Really a disappointing piece of overall bad filmaking
zushini-346-3594115 October 2020
The idea is nice, but unfortunately that is all that is nice about this film.

Abysmal acting and direction, terrible jarring storytelling and unnecessary plot points make this film pretty hard to watch.

It feels like they tried to cram too many ideas into one simple magical story and ended up spoiling everything entirely.

Rishav198736510 November 2019
A wonderful masterpiece of Marco Bonfanti , one of the best Italian writer and director. The movie depicts the struggle of an extra-ordinary with social as well as mental complications. Not all extra-ordinary lives are great and love is also put to the test.A great movie again by Netflix. Watch the Movie on Netflix or in Selected Theatres near you. Wishing the movie a great success.

Warmed my Heart!
maribabins2 November 2019
Warmed my heart not just because of how unique this movie is but that Netflix is actually trying to get good movies (can't wait for Marriage Story and The Irishman). there's always going to be hesitation going into something like this just because of how many directions it could go in, but it's very obvious that the cast were very invested in making this film the best it possibly could be - even if it isn't that - and that Bonfanti had a clear vision. an intimate look at relationships and longing. very impressive wirework.

Masterpiece
pumasuper3 January 2020
Took me away from where I am. Gave me an hour and 47 minutes to escape, completely, from my own life. Not too many movies can do that. This isn't always a feel good movie, but you're able to finish it feeling good. It's Cathartic.

Additional Thoughts:

Primarily the dance but the romance overall between Agata and Oscar is one of the most beautiful romances I've seen in film.
