Was good, then...

The first six episodes really seemed like they had promise. The show touches on many interesting ideas, but does not follow through on many (or most) of them.

The seventh episode was a waste of time that added nothing to the stories.

The eight episode is 40 minutes of a concert I didn't want to attend, then a nonsensical ending to a story that had built such complicated characters.

Very unsatisfying overall, but if you're going to try it, binge it. Not worth waiting week to week.

Progressive so far in the GOOD sense.
refordgarry24 September 2020
Most tourists only see the Grand Canal, so great to see other parts of that Northern Laguna, passed so quickly from Venice airport to the Old City. Fraser, the adolescent is definitely a complete paradox of a young man, but it's great to see such complex character-molding, with so candid treatment of alternate sexuality and the way the community embraces it - or otherwise. The rest of the Screen-Making community could learn a thing or two from this candid filmography, literally by letting scenes "roll", showing things as they are, as opposed to what the directors want them to be. The guys in this are certainly coquettish, but that's because normal guys, in real life DO act in this manner. Objectified? - huh! Now just don't go and spoil things, HBO - since my "7" , like many others' praise here is provisional.

CERTAINLY NOT FOR EVERYBODY
mehakyadav-635588 November 2020
It's crude , it's raw but whatever it is it's beautiful . Its certainly not for the people who believe in the totality of things , or people who believe that every action is supposed to have a motive . This show is all about the confusion that our minds go through , it's all about those unbridled moments in life where you struggle to define yourself, your ideas and your identity . It's about celebrating the uncertainty of our beings and not giving up on finding our true essence . If you look closely you will find some fragment or the other of your life in the show giving you the assurance that whatever you face is not uncommon and it's certainly not bad . In the end , there are few seemingly bad things about the characters but isnt it the way people are ? Not good , not bad but grey . So watch it if you want to because the result is highly subjective and is extremely dependent on the way you perceive things because in this show there is no single definite reason and I believe that is how things really are . What's good to you might be bad to someone else & vice versa .

So much potential wasted
mgalercail4 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is coming from someone who enjoys slow burn dramas and character studies, as well as LGBT cinema. The less is more style hindered this so much, and I enjoyed call me by your name.

You get a collection of well shot scenes, with nothing being said. The music worked then it became distracting. Music should match with the scenes. It needs to flow. I get that this isn't expected to be a non stop soap opera show, nor some bubbly teen drama you'd find on Netflix, but I wanted more.

Chloe S. is such a fabulous actor and to see her reduced to almost a caricature is laughable. You never know what her real role is on the base and one doesn't need every meeting showcased, yet we're not given much about her. Same with her out of control son Fraser. We get to the finale and only given a half @&& speech about having a pretend friend..what?! He's clearly been through something traumatic and given no help or guidance for his outbursts. The writer is deluded and pretentious. Can we talk about that concert, horrid singer. My lord. I do not know of how life on a military base works, but I do know for certain that these kids wouldn't get a free pass as they do. This isn't Skins. No high ranking officer/parent would allow their young child to hit them without consequences ever. It just doesn't happen.

The kids cause prob 30k worth of damage to a house in an episode and there's zero repercussions for it. No one communicates like a human here. People act out towards one another and everyone just sits there and practically shrugs their shoulders at times, same with adults. They only get emotional when the script/scene requires it. Brittany being low key into Caitlin should've been built up more. It comes out of nowhere. Richard clashing with Wilson had about one scene before his outburst, rushed and only there to continue the plot. Danny wishes to convert to Islam This is explored about five minutes before it is Dismissed

Caitlin seems to be the only one with a character arc here with Fraser tagging along to an awkward finale. Fraser flaps his arms, has no filter and dresses like Andy Warhol, that's it; no depth. This type of writing drives me mad. Having no explanation doesn't make it smart. It makes it frustrating.

Other shows at least imply things. I'm all for subtext and what isn't on screen. But there is simply nothing to grasp from these people. It's almost alien.

Jonathan is a predator; plain and simple. The kid needed a role model and comfort. Jonathan saw it as a challenge for his ways. He should've known better and I wished for Sarah to come out of her head and get him off the base. He deserved it way more than Richard. The director seems to fetishize this kind of relationship here. If Fraser was the same age, it would've been more of a boundary issue. Here its not ok, he is 14; a child. I think Luca needs to be educated on when people emotionally and physically mature. Because it's not even close at that age. He seems to relish in it. Oh isn't that cute? No. It's not cute sir, I felt ill when him and his gf straight up made moves on Fraser.

8 episodes seem to be a very long extension of the first one. The writers/directors arrogance will not bring them a second season I feel. I went from being enthralled to grossly disappointed with this show.

Dear Luca D, get a grip and stop encouraging this kind of predatory behavior. Have consequences for your characters, structure. If you want things to be presented as a "dream." Then turn it into a fantasy show; it would suit everyone much better. This is far from reality.

Guys, the directing of this show is amazing. And the soundtrack??????? GOD. I really liked it. Although i missed a defined plot for the first episode, we still got the chance to meet the characters from Fraser´s sight.

Guadagnino At His Finest
aaronjagger16 September 2020
Only one episode in and I know We Are Who We Are will be a classic for years to come. With stunning cinematography and a score from Dev Haynes (or Blood Orange as many may know him), so far Jack Dylan Grazer shines as Fraser in an ethereally beautiful, Italian-set, indie slow burn. Classy, stunning and poinant. Coming-of-age has never been so raw and sultry.

The latest offering from Italian director Luca Guadagnino
paul-allaer16 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"We Are Who We Are" (2020 release; 8 episodes of about 60 min. each) brings the story of Fraser. As Episode 1 "Right Here, Right Now" opens, we are at an airport in Italy, where Fraser, a high school kid, and his parents (Sarah and Maggie) are being picked up and taken to a US military base. We later learn that Sarah is taking over command of the garrison. Upon arriving at their new home, Fraser is bored and goes out exploring the base and the Italian town... At this point we are 10 min. into Episode 1, but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: this is the latest from Italian writer-producer-director Luca Guadagnino, who a couple of years ago brought us the Oscar-nominated "Call Me By Your Name". Here he continues in that very same vein: a high school kid lands in a new environment (moving from NW to Italy), and needs to adjust in his new setting. In fact, it is striking to see a number parallels there are between "Call Me By Your Name" and "We Are Who We Are"> Seeing the Fraser character (played by Jack Dylan Grazer) immediately made me think of Timothée Chalamet, who plays the lead in "Call Me By Your Name". The setting in Italy. The theme of "finding yourself". And so on. Chloë Sevigny plays tough-as-nails Sarah, and Alice Braga plays Maggie. Apart from all that, there were several things in how Episode 1 played out that I found highly implausible, and I'm going to keep my eye on how future episodes deal with them. The biggest challenge will be to see how the Fraser character evolves in future episodes. As it is (in Episode 1), he is a self-absorbed little brat, and hence not very likable.

"We Are Who We Are" premiered earlier this week on HBO and is now available on HBO On Demand and other streaming services. New episodes air on Mondays 10 pm Eastern. Bottom line: if you liked "Call Me By Your Name", you will almost certainly also like "We Are Who We Are. Of course I encourage you to check it out, and draw your own conclusion.

surprised by the hate this is getting
greg-varley7 November 2020
Seems to be a lot of negative feedback due to the fact this isn't "what it's like to be on a foreign military base" from those who have experience first hand, which I guess we have to respect, however, it's just a tv show and not a one sided documentary, so why base judgement on that? Interesting story for the modern age, felt like a typical Guadagnino to me so enjoyed it quite a lot. From my perspective, people should chill out and not expect a real life 100% factual account of what life is actually like in such an environment, but that's just me. Thanks!

Every art appreciator's dream, but every realistic matures nightmare
Senryu-Cherry28 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The parts I liked- 1. Atmospheric cinematography 2. Portrayal of teenage emotions 3. Lgbtq+ representation

The parts I didn't like- 1. Lack of a strong conclusion for the story 2. Lack of accountability for actions

This show felt like watching different memories of a group of people living in the same environment - a military base. I've never been on military-based colonies but I do know about corporate employment-based colonies. And the way these teenagers are never held accountable for their actions is bonkers. The main character is hurtful to his mother, the group 2x go to a luxury house and break it apart. I listened to Luca's vision for the house. That house was supposed to be Eden's garden where those teenagers are fully themselves without any filters. I adored the representation of emotions. The confusion regarding one's sexuality and preferences, inner dialogues of a teenager during social interactions with family and friends.

But when these kinds of heavy topics are discussed, the creators have to understand that being realistic is very important. Those teenagers in the name of exploring their sadness and emotions were putting their lives and the lives of their parents into grave danger and they faced no repercussions for it.

I had this theory that the main character was suffering with may be undiagnosed autism or something similar, but no explanation was given. Series touched on many topics like The other black family was showcased as Republican supporters (which was a very interesting choice, especially around US-elections), the story of a religious mother with homosexuality, the story of estrangement of a father-step son, exploring Islam, all of this has so much potential. But none of the concepts were not explained further. I've very conflicted thoughts.

It has only one episode so far, but u can see how original it can be. The directing is amazing, and contrary to what some people say. this first episode was to introduce the characters. Obviously there isn´t a stablished plot yet.

Complex characters that feel very real in our modern world. I love the soundtrack (curated by blood orange) as well. Everything I'm looking for in a tv show.

Uneven and not grounded in reality
rachbruno27 October 2020
I keep reading how "painfully real" this show is. It is painful, yes. There is little character development and the relationships (between mother and son and friends) are just weird and not based in reality. The entire character of Fraser is the worst. He comes off as flippant and annoying and it's a horribly acted character. I am not in the military, but it doesn't seem realistic to me. The dialogue, the characters and their interactions with each other just don't work and it comes off very uneven and hard to watch. It's disappointing because I think there is some real talent that is wasted.

Set to be another Luca masterpiece
lyntonm15 September 2020
In true Luca fashion, the directing is amazing and the scenery is stunning.

The first episode follows Fraser (played by Jack Dylan Grazier) and his family moving into a US military base in Italy.

Fraser is a quirky, troubled teen who we get to learn a bit about. His interactions and journeys around the base and outside of it make him a loveable and curious character.

The soundtrack, like in Luca's Call Me By Your Name, is extremely brilliant.

While the episode doesn't seem to have any particular direction, once I finished it, I wanted to watch more. Can't wait for the rest of the series.

Odd age range of friends
ElwoodPDowd111 October 2020
Older brothers don't typically include much-younger sisters in their escapades. Caitlyn hadn't even hit puberty, yet her brother and his enlisted friends fully accepted her into their circle ~ then allowed her to bring the odd little Fraser along. Maybe there was an explanation, but I must have missed it. Very unlikely circle of friends.

mediocre but somehow works
manschelde-112 January 2021
Mediocre drama, filmed in a slow indulgent disconnected dreamlike style, concerning non-binary teenager angst during coming of age.

The first series of 8 episodes has a poor ending, despite the apparent resolution.

Disciplined people or people who respect other people's property might loathe this stuff, because the protagonists appear to be feral, damaged and without respect for anyone or anything other than themselves and their whims.

Many of the adult characters are unsympathetic.

But behind this front are sensitive flakes trying to understand themselves and how they fit and how they relate to others, obsessing over intense relationships with their co-passengers. As an exploration of non binary folks it may help with understand these people.

If you have teenage children, you might recoil at many scenes, but in other scenes you may sympathize with the uncertainties, the ambiguities, the messiness and the insecurities that many people must navigate.

Made for HBO/Sky, it is an unusual choice for the BBC to make available in the UK during the Covid-19 lockdowns, possibly due to the lack of new content during the pandemic.

Wanted to love, but...
txhrvcu3 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The trailer intrigued me so much. No doubt the visuals and camera work are beautiful and the plot had some potential... but the script, characters, and younger actors are pretty bad.

Fraser is an awful character... the first episode was so hard to get through. He is so unlikable (abusive to his mom and a try hard). The pacing of the first episode also felt so slow. The second episode was really good as it focused on cate and her family. Cate's family dynamic is the only one that feels real... all the other relationships ( Fraser and his moms, the friend group, cate and Fraser) feel unnatural and forced. The parents acting are perfection but the younger actors aren't too good. Cate and Fraser are pretty good, but obviously nepotism helped Francesca Scorsese get the role of Britney. Her acting is so bad. Also have issues with a lot of unrealistic stuff, specifically Cate's period scene... periods don't just stop as soon as they start... they last 3-7 days.

Two words: Chloe Sevigny
chloesevignysoscarnomination18 September 2020
This show is pretty good and hopefully has the potential to spiral into some sort of 'call me by your name' and 'euphoria' love-child that everyone online seems desperate for it to become. However, the real reason you should stay tuned is Chloe Sevigny. She's an icon and we as a society need to stop sleeping on her brilliance.

Not even close...
schorschi10022 October 2020
Having spent a part of my life in and out of an overseas military base with my partner I was thrilled to watch the story of a lesbian couple and their son on post. Alas nothing could be further from the truth. Such a high ranking officer would have not allowed this spoiled brat to behave so abusively. In fact MPs would have interfered the very instant he drank alcohol, and (unlike what is shown) soldiers and their kids alike are expected to behave even off post - if they don't there are consequences.

Besides this inconsistency, the plot simply sucks (or should I say does not even exist?), the acting of most people is rather poor, the music bad, the scenery uninteresting, and watching it simply a waste of time....
