Dorf on the Diamond (1996 Video)
3/10
Not terribly entertaining in this reviewer's mind
23 May 2002
Well, I can't see I thoroughly enjoyed Dorf on the Diamond. I am a big fan of baseball but felt this short video mostly failed in its attempt at humor and hilarious antics like a peanuts vendor and Dorf using sign language to make a sell, or the beginning when Dor pulls into the parking lot of the stadium completely alone and all of a sudden both sides are taken up by cars and he has to climb out throuh the roof. At times, I found his accent mildy amusing but felt it dragged on and on (despite being only 30 or 40 minutes in length)

amsuing but certainly not for everyone
17 May 2002
Well I just watched this brief short featuring Rodney Dangerfield thanks to my friend RG who mailed it to me as a gift. As a big fan of Mr. Dangerfield's oft crude humor, I enjoyed this and found myself laughing outloud several times. However, I know that many of the female race as well as males find him particularly offensive at times. In essence, if you not only enjoyed the movie Caddyshack but also Rodney Dangerfield's performance in it, I imagine you would enjoy this film.

decent movie
12 April 2002
Well, being a big fan of both Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro, I had high expectations for this film. I wasn't completely disappointed and found the movie as a whole to be amusing. It just seemed kind of slow at the beginning and I guess the plot just wasn't my favorite idea. That aside, the acting was good (though Murphy was no where near as good as he was in Beverly Hills Cop). William Shatner has a nice cameo.

good sampler of various well-known films
12 February 2002
I thought the host Roddy McDowell did a nice job narrating this sampler which showed clips of such famous films as "Gone With the Wind," "Ben Hur," "Singing in the Rain," and "Mutiny on the Bounty." What I especially liked was the fact that the film showed bits of a number of films that I would like to see in the future and by writing them down, I now have an organized list.

amusing, sick-twisted short
12 February 2002
I liked the references to Chicago (the city in which I reside) in this short which details a group of women playing cards. Eventually the end up playing Russian roulette and I don't want to spoil the ending but do think this short is worth seeing for some laughs.Warning, this is not for the squeamish.

Memorial Day (1998)

not as good as the perfect weapon (also featuring Jeff Speakman)
12 February 2002
Memorial Day is a decent film starring martial arts expert Jeff Speakman who happened to study the same type of karate (kempo) as I did. The movie basically details a former intelligence agent who had information about a special satelite that is being used to harm innocent americans. Speakman plays the agent who is deemed insane and confined to a mental hospital. He is released with the idea of him being ordered to kill a presidential candidate who is little more than a puppet in the eyes of the people who put him there. The film moves pretty well and the acting is decent.

not one of Chuck's better films
12 February 2002
Well, the Hero and the Terror is slightly below average in my opinion. Yes, Chuck is a real martial artist and kicks some butt in this film but it is rather slow and the acting in my opinion is for the most part subpar although I think Steve James does a decent job. Like my friend Ryan, I was confused as to why the psychopath chose to go to the theatre at the end of the film rather than to go after Norris's girlfriend. Until than, the killer had only killed women. Oh, well, I guess it wasn't as predictable as I thought. Definitly a film you can pass on.

Don't waste your time
12 February 2002
The film Stepsisters is in my opinion, a poorly made film that is uninteresting and extremely slow. My friend Ryan dozed several times during the film and I was close to doing so as well. Moreover, believe it or not I found the plot somewhat difficult to follow. The action scenes are not well done. In retrospect, I should have given this movie a rating of 2 rather than 2. I guess I enjoyed some of the songs enough for it to merit the 2 rating.

Enojoyable drama
21 January 2002
I'll admit that I had high expectations knowing that Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L Jackson were in this film prior to viewing it. Thanks in part to their strong performances, I was not disappointed. I thought the plot was interesting and gave the viewer an opportunity to reflect on the horrors of war and how sometimes no matter what decision is made, that there will be dire consequences.

The Hobbit (1977 TV Movie)

enjoyable basic animation of the classic Tolkien novel
21 January 2002
The screen version of the Hobbit is enjoyable and in my opinion, especially so for younger children as it is not difficult to follow. That being said, I also enjoyed the film and thought it remained pretty faithful to the book. I thought the voice of Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist was well-done and righfully naive to the adventures of the world. Also enjoyed Gandalf's cahracter

Great adaptation of a wonderful book
17 December 2001
Having read all 4 of the Harry Potter novels, I had fairly high expectations going to see the movie. I was not disappointed. I felt the movie captured the essence of the novel with relation to the humor, the emotions, the imagery, etc. Many of the scenes were very similar to how I imagined them while reading the novels and I imagine others also imagined them in a similar fashion. I thought Hagrid did a particularly good job as did the 3 young stars. I hope the second part is as faithful and entertaining as the Sorcer's Stone.

Decent adaptation of an excellent novel
17 December 2001
Having read David Baldacci's novel "Absolute Power" prior to viewing the film, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a good, but not great version of one of my favorite suspense novels. I just felt like there was something missing, though I'm not sure what. Also, the ending in the novel is completely different from the book which I felt was not necessary although I understand that many people desire a "hollywood ending."

well-done film with terrific acting from Johnny Depp
12 April 2001
I just saw this movie 2 days ago and it still remains fresh in my mind. The movie details an american who become involved smuggling cocaine from Colombia to the United States during the late 1970' and the early 1980's. However, the movie starts when George Jung is a young boy and ends with a current picture of him from prison. I thought the film did a nice job advancing through time. I also enjoyed the little tidbits of spanish in the film since I speak spanish.

good movie, book is even better
8 March 2001
I read the book before seeing the movie and was thus, not expecting it to be as good ( I thought the book was extremely well-written) HOwever, I did enjoy the movie. Redford is a terrifc actor and director and I thought the cinematography was great. I found it interesting that the end in the movie does not parallel the book, but I guess they wanted a Hollywood ending. Anyway, good overall movie, and as another viewer eloquently stated, this movie is a refreshing break from all the special effects one sees in many other films.

outstanding film that shows the horror of warfare
8 March 2001
In my opinion, Full Metal Jacket is the best war movie out. I may be judging prematurely, as I have yet to see Apocalypse Now, but from all the others I have seen, FMJ stands out the most. The acting is superb from all characters, particularly Modine and Erney, a former Marine Corps Drill Instructor who was originally not supposed to be in the film. Unlike many other reviewers, I found the second half very powerful and interesting. I still think the first part is better but the boot camp part is near impossible to beat, excuse the sloppy grammar and wording. Anyway, I highly recommend this film.

Atlantic City (1980)

wonderful movie with terrific acting
2 March 2001
This is easily one of my favorite 80's films. Having been several times to Atlantic City in the past couple years, I enjoyed seeing how it looked in 1980 and thereabouts, a time when buildings were being torn down and big casinos being built. Burt Lancaster, who passed away several years ago, is outstanding as a small-time hustler who seems to live in his glory days of the past. Sarandon is also great as a naive young woman who dreams of being a dealer and going to Monacco.

amusing at times
25 February 2001
Down to Earth is a sporadically funny movie starring Chris Rock. I thought the idea was creative (even though it is basically a remake of Heaven Can Wait). Rock is hilarious at times and so are some of the others. However, something is missing and I'm not sure what it is. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film and happen to be a big Chris Rock fan. It just needed a little more. You can probably wait until video to see it.

cute movie with some good scenes
25 February 2001
I saw this movie probably 3 years ago and thought it was pretty good. Josh Charles does a nice job as a traffic controller in a small town who dreams of landing a big job in a big city. The movie details his life, more or less if I remember correctly. Great song by Rusted Root is featured in the movie (send me on my way).

not bad
25 February 2001
Needful Things is a decent film about a man who arrives in a small town to set up his stop and basically turns out to be the devil. Good acting particularly on the parts of JT Walsh and Ed Harris. I did read the book by Stephen king first and definitely reccomend it over the movie as characters are explained much more in depth and as always from the book to movie, stuff is left out. But overall, not a bad film.

great movie with a terrrific cast
25 February 2001
Ocean's 11 has a great cast that include Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and more. The acting in my mind is outstanding and everyone seems to play their part with flair and ease. Great performance of E O eleven? by Sammy Davis Jr. and others in the movie. Movie progresses nicely and does not have any dull moments. Highly recommended

fair, nothing spectacular
20 February 2001
I thought this was the worst of the four Best of the Best Movies. Although Phillip Rhee in my opinion does a good job in all, I thought the acting was for the most part subpar in this film and didn't think the plot was all that great. Some decent fight scenes.

some good fight scenes
20 February 2001
I saw this movie when it came out about 10 yrs ago because I was studying a form of martial arts called kempo at the time. In the Perfect weapon, the star, Jeff Speakman has a high degree black belt in kempo. The plot is nothing special, what happens is Speakman's mentor is killed and he sets about to avenge his death. It was interesting watching some of the fight scenes since some of the moves used I had learned as well.

decent film with some laughs
20 February 2001
I saw this movie because I liked the advertisement on the box at the video store and because it had Robin Williams, one of my (and probably milllions of other peoples) my favorite actors. Basically, two random guys become unemployed and than witness a robbery. They both end up in the mountains in Vermont awaiting a "showdown" with the robber. Mathau is also funny at times. All in all, a decent film.

excellent film, very moving, and powerfully acted
20 February 2001
This is one of the best films I have ever seen. Although it has been several years since I last viewed it, it still rings clearly in my mind. The book by Judith Guest is also excellent. The music score is well-done with Pachebel Cannon both opening and closing the movie (I think). In my opinion, this film is very realistic and I would recommend it to just about anyone.

The Graduate (1967)
10/10
outstanding film, one of the best ever
20 February 2001
I have probably seen the Graduate 4 or 5 times and haven't tired of it in the least. Hoffman gives a tour de force performance as a naive college grad who is seduced by a friend of his parents and ends up falling in love with her daughter. As almost everyone probably knows, the soundtrack is by Simon and Garfunkel and in my mind,is terrific and couldn't be more appropriate for the movie. Hoffman gives a good impression of the alienation many young adults probably felt at the time.
