an interesting but not very well done niche show
4 March 2024
There are a couple of drag-based reality shows on currently. This is the other one. It seems like it might have been based on the ru paul version, just purposely given a downbeat monster pastiche. Whereas ru tries to keep things upbeat and keeps the big drama to a minmum, this one pulls out all the stops. Horror, gross makeup and disgusting tasks to perform in order to stay in the game. This is in addition to the runway shows, where they bring out some weird and inventive outfits for the hosts to critique. This is done in the name of a supposed hidden underworld of drag that's perhaps underserved. Who knows? I sure don't!

Contestants don't just leave the show, they're shown being murdered in various inventive ways. The hosts are a couple of lookalike queens with expensive wardrobes and unlimited colored contact lenses. The extent of the host's "acting" is holding their hands up by their ears with their loooong fingers pointing up, then wiggling them back and forth and cackling menacingly. They do this A LOT! I don't find that either one of them has enough o of a personality to be hosting a show like this. The contestants are far more entertaining.

I found it interesting in small doses. I can't see binging this for very long - it's just toomuch of a downer.

Bake Squad (2021– )

a nice supportive baking competition
29 January 2024
4 bakers are tasked with creating a dessert for a specific party or event. They each approach it in different ways and the results are often very creative. One is then chosen to go off to the party to wow the guests. It's not much of a competition, because they're all very supportive and help each other out when needed.

What i don't get is...why do they slice up the cake while in the process of choosing which dessert gets to go to the party? If they're cutting into the dessert, that's going to show up when it arrives at the party, isn't it? Also, like on "cupcake wars", why don't the other desserts just get to go along to the party also? Seems like a bit of a waste, plus, they all worked so hard to bring the ideas to life indifferent ways.

ony if you love the corniest xmas related jokes
13 January 2024
Not bad for a new spin on the regular show. It's much shorter and no sleeping in the house, so that whole part of the show is gone. Some of the players are easier to take than others, who can come across a little forced. The competitions are inventive, though you will get very sick of both the xmas-related puns (which have obviously been written for them). And the following phrases - "reindeer games", "jingle bell ball" and."santa's showdown". It's only 6 episodes, so you know they say these things a LOT! Cbs, suggestion - how about we dispense with the celebrity aspect of this show, and just use regular people? Or kids? I mean, the food network has kids compete, and who really cares about low grade celebrities or these prior winners? I forget who was in the game the second it's over. I like that it was short, so i could binge the whole thing at once.

Candy Cane Lane (I) (2023)

eddie murphy is in a holiday film
2 December 2023
Eddie murphy spends a great deal of the film reacting to things, something he is very good at. He's a stressed resident of candy cane lane, the street known as the one that goes over the top for the holidays. This year the event has a sponsor and a big cash prize, which he needs to win. Chaos ensues when he makes a deal with a strange person in a weird holiday decoration store under the freeway. One that's bigger on the inside than the outside.

Ultimately, the scenes with eddie and his family seem forced, and i was well into the movie before i realized he was supposed to have 3 kids. Only one of them gets any real screen time. . It's a bit jarring, since they are the center of the film.

Honestly, the main reason i even watched the movie was jillian bell. I've been a big fan of hers since "workaholics", and she really brings the film to life when she arrives in her role as pepper, an angry, vengeful (and demoted) elf.

very lush animation and lots of action
15 November 2023
The problem is, it's kind of like watching a long cut scene from a video game. It's melodramatic for sure, and the dialogue is painful but the voice acting is not bad. Lots of zombies of course, but i'm sure i'm not the only one who has gotten confused over the years. Between video game versions and movie versions, there's no longer any one way this story plays out. The same characters and locations are used in multiple situations which just results in no clear storyline at all. It's not bad, if you're used to the way video games roll out a story. Since the same folks made this that make the games, it isn't surprising.

teens in peril torture a male model
3 November 2023
This episode and this show is pretty typical of a CW teen drama (of which this is one) - there's some teen romance, drama, and many fights.

What sets the whole show apart for me is that it doesn't seem afraid to wipe some people out, even if they're known or liked characters. Something that makes shows like "the walking dead" and "lost so watchable is that you don't know when somebody will suffocate or get blown out into space.

What makes this particular episode so good to me was the nonchalant addition of the new "grounder" character (played by the great ricky whittle of "american gods") - what the people who are still alive on earth are called by the people from the ark in space. Anyway, he's a handsome sexy english male model without a trace of bodyfat and beautiful teeth living in a post-nuclear wasteland. So, of course, they string him up and strip him down to show off his sweaty perfect muscular physique. It's pretty damn silly and i laughed at this plot contrivance. Overall, though, i'm enjoying the series and can't wait to see where it leads since i found out there are 6 more seasons of this stuff.

seems like a "proof of concept" example of 3D
10 October 2023
I could see the producers showing this to investors and saying "this is the future of movies". It's kind of overdone, like showing the most extreme examples of the 3D effect really getting in people's faces. That, seemingly, is the only reason for it's existence. It was part of a short revival of the 3D process, and i remember seeing it in a theater and thinking at the time how cool it was.

What's the plot? Well, a guy in a red windbreaker walks around and does some "treasure hnting" stuff, while things pop up at him (and us) in a vaguely surprising way. There really isn't any other plot than that. It could be argued that it was based on the popularity of "raiders of the lost ark", but you could actually argue just as convincingly that it's based on "the ghost and mr. Chicken". Recommended just for the flat out gimmicky-ness of it.

let's go back to ludlow again!
7 October 2023
A sequel to "pet sematary" (you pick which version, doesn't matter) that is actually a prequel, showing jud's early life, in 1969, as he is trying to get the hell out of town and have a normal life with his eventual wife, norma. His father, played by henry thomas, is really urging him to do so. I wonder if there's a secret in this town nobody wants him to know about.

This is a visualization of one of the stories louis creed is told by jud in stephen king's book. It isn't too bad, i guess, though i would have preferred far less stuff happening in almost complete darkness (like the lat 15 minutes or so), but, nothing happens that's of any importance at the end of a horror movie, right?

Comparing this film to 1992's sequel, "pet sematary 2" that came out after the original movie, that one had far more humor and was generally more gory and fun. Thanks to the amazing clancy brown, who gets killed in almost everything he's in. The folks in ludlow here are a sad, messed up bunch. Also, while i love david duchovny, it was a little hard to buy him as a farmer.

Still, it was interesting on some level to see the situation the town has viewed from another angle. The residents seem to all know what's going on, and some have made a pact to stop "things' if they happen again.

the ship with the slowest opening doors of any in the fleet!
5 October 2023
First off, i love this movie. American international made the worst, most watchable movies of the 50s and 60s. A well-chosen crew (obviously chosen for their stereotypical roles once on board) looks for a hospitable planet for colonization. Instead they find a rude foil-clad alien who sticks its tongue out at them and then attacks the captain for no apparent reason and then has the gall to continue to breathe even after it is ruthlessly killed on its own ship. They blow the whole mess up and continue on their way to the ocean of a faraway planet. Where they are attacked by a gill man and a crabby crab.

On board the ship, when the lovely lady crew member presses the"door open" button, it must be 3 or 4 seconds before the door slowly starts to slide open and then interminably slide closed. We have to watch this process several times during the film. The lovely lady crew member's filthy hands also touch all of the space food pills they are forced to eat. Don't worry. They are able to get back home with the mission not very well accomplished.

It's hard to believe that just 3 years after this film's release, "2001 a space odyssey" was able to put all of the issues regarding communication with earth, gravity, etc. To rest in a more realistic fashion than this drive-in gem. Still, it's pretty enjoyable and worth a look.

good, from a non-marvel point of view
15 September 2023
I'm not a fan of the marvel movies, especially lately. They really seem to have lost the mojo that made some of the earlier outings very popular. Some people are blaming disney for milking the brand like they did star wars and making too much subpar content too quickly. I don't know, disney can't ALWAYS be the bad guy, can they?

The fact that some ("guardians of the galaxy" and some of the thor films) have a single director's vision through a couple of movies means they are able to get into the heart of the character, and tease a bit of comedy and humanity from flat, 2-d comic book charcters is appealing . I never read superhero comic books as a kid (i went more for the horror stuff) so i'm definitely not in the demographic. Also, i'm really old.

David harbour makes this movie. Scarlett is good in the role that basically carries the film (florence is also quite understated and impressinve), but i couldn't look anyplace else when he was onscreen. No matter what he does, even playing a homicidal santa claus, he seems to outact everyone else.

Lunatics (2019)

oops, it isn't a real documentary show
10 September 2023
I made it through the entire first episode, knowing nothing about the premise or the producer/actor, and really felt dumb that i made it to the 2nd episode thinking it was just some truly bizarre people. By #2, it dawned on me that there was a certain similarity in appearance for all the characters and i almost smacked my head. I group of, well, lunatics, are trotted out, documentary style. And they are a weird bunch - becky, the giantess at college, jana the pet psychic. Quentin the douchbag real estate agent, cursed with a huge ass. Keith, the man in love with a cash register (well, no, he's cured, right?), gavin, the, what?, large child? Anyway, annoying, that's for sure. And joyce, the porn star turned insane hoarder. All very memorable in their own ways. Highly recommended for impressive characterizations and acting all around. Keith's explanation of how his wife caught him having sex in the garage with the cash drawer of his cash register (lovingly reenacted by the actual people involed) was a favorite of mine.

could be one of the best trek series ever, now with carol kane!
3 September 2023
This iteration of star trek is pretty recent, having just finished its 2nd season. But i can tell already it's a classic. There are, at this time, 4 star trek series running simultaneously (2 live action and 2 animated), and i have watched them all. Lower decks gets points for really going out of their way to address canon and events and people we've all heard of before. Yet, it's addressed with a tongue in cheek style that's very refreshing. The recent crossover episode with a character from lower decks time traveling to the live action strange new worlds was pretty fun and well done.

The group responsible for production clearly loves the show and, while addressing new issues (who knew the gorn were supposed to be scary?), still has the ability to take these mostly well known characters and flesh them out, give them backstories (uhura is a standout) and so much reverence and humor that it's hard not to love the show. One of the later episodes this season had everyone in an entire quadrant singing and dancing about their feelings due to a spatial anomaly. Yes, even the klingons.

The addition of carol kane to the show was fantastic, in my opinion. From the time early on when she was andy kaufman's bride sitka on taxi, through the addams family and most especially beating the crap out of bill murray with a toaster as the ghost of christmas present in scrooged, i've been a fan for a long time. She fits in so well - it's refreshing to see her here as a kind of guinan character who's lived on earth for hundreds of years. Brilliant casting.

Highly recommended.

written by people who LOVE smoking
28 August 2023
A group of students learning the hospitality industry are sent to a "learning" event center and basically forced to do everything work-related, from custodial to serving in order to pass

from the get-go, absolutely everyone smokes, wants to smoke, or is somehow kept from smoking. Maybe i'm just overly sensitive, since this a foreign film. Maybe everyone smokes now except in the US.

All the students seem tired and wrung out on the bus, before the story even takes off. What follows, after they arrive, is a bit like basic training - break them down and build them back up. There's not much in the way of horror here, but it is a well-made and engrossing film. That this is a student film made me even more impressed.

Island Escape (2023)
5/10
bad things always seem to happen on isolated islands
20 August 2023
Experiments, testing, cloning, and studies into things man was not meant to understand or change are always headquartered on little, out-of-the-way islands, then, someone has to go there, usually after something horrific has happened, to try and fix or retrieve things. That's what happens here as well, except that our heroes are mercenaries, hired to find the daughter of the man who hired them.

On this island, though, well, there are some things going on that they aren't told about at all, and, unfortunately, it's not going to go well for them when they do. Things in the woods are stalking them, there are strange discoveries in the woods of duplicate items the team members have on them already.

It plays a lot like a syfy channel/asylum lower-budget sci fi film, but is a lot bettter than it should be - certainly better than the "sharknado" films, in my opinion. Would recommend if you don't have too high expectations.

Zombieverse (2023– )
8/10
somewhat improvised themed reality show with mostly humorous results
8 August 2023
A few episodes in, and i like this somewhat improvised reality show. From their reactions, etc., it seemed to me the contestants were told they'd start out being on a reality dating-type show but that "something" would happen and they would then be on their own.

I can't imagine that this is any more than minimally scripted, because the producers obviously spent a lot of time setting up the various locations and situations, and it doesn't make any sense that they would do that for people who are just reading lines. From their reactions as the dating show starts to go sideways they seemed genuinely taken by surprise.

The "something" turns out to be a zombie apocalypse, which they are supposed to somehow survive. They travel around together to complete various escape-related tasks (and try to avoid being taken out by the zombies). You can also tell the zombies are really into the concept.

For imported shows like this, i much prefer the original audio accompanied by subtitles. The voiceover is kind of bland, and doesn't really match what was very likely more honest reactions to what's going on. Would recommend for fans of reality (and, sure, zombie stuff too)

The Ark (2023– )

almost a complete remake of the movie "voyagers" with colin farrell
16 March 2023
I colony ship is sent out from earth into the unknown to find a new habitable planet. An accident causes the sleeping chambers of the adults on board to be ejected or destroyed and the young people have to fend for themselves.

Not a new scenario, but perfect, i guess, for the scifi channel. If it hits, they have a young adult drama that might get ratings and carry on for more than season. If it doesn't, drop it in the bin. I imagine they have a box over by the window with more retread scripts to pull out and film. Doesn't seem to matter, good shows or bad, they seem to have an endless supply.

Maybe they oughta film one of the AI-written science fiction scenario shows that have popped up on you tube (david lynch directs the muppets, or tim burton remakes star wars). At least the visuals are good.

I honestly can't tell you if the show is good or not - i've seen the first 2 episodes only, but it's not looking good here. I will say they don't shy away from taking out a character or two once in a while.

weird, unengaging story of two mentally ill, entitled, sad plastic surgery addicts
28 February 2023
One of them (darcy, i think) was featured on "90 day fiance" as a serial dater, who seemed to believe that every man she met was her prince charming and that she was finally in love for real this time. I don't know how old this woman is, but she's clearly no spring chicken.

Watching her strut her stuff in too-tight clothing (and too much makeup on her surgically teased facial features) towards inevitable heartbreak somewhere down the line was the reason i just fast-forwarded through her segments when she was featured.

It so happened that she had a twin sister. The tlc channel seemed to find this interesting and gave them a show, as if double the lunacy was going to be interesting for the public to consume. Newsflash - it isn't. They are so sad and delusional (seemingly propped up by each other, andtlc's ongoing peptalks about how great they are to watch), maybe it's thought their trainwreck lives will make others glad they haven't gone this far themselves. I cannot recommend this, and once again, i blame tlc for another bad show choice.

What WOULD i watch? Maybe a serial killer wearing a bodycam?

well done TV wonderful world of disney sunday night staple
8 February 2023
I remember seeing this one often on abc, sunday night right after "wild kingdom" pn the wonderful world of disney. They did quite a few of these types of films, presumably because the budget was lower than a feature film. They were also a little lost for a few years after walt died.

This one is also noteable because it features johnny whittaker and scott kolden, who would go on to be brothers in "sigmund and the sea monsters" on saturday mornings during this same year. Anyway, the plot inviolves a couple of brothers making a scary film during summer vacation who stumble onto a jewel heist in an old lighthouse. Ridiculously stupid criminals and not a swear word to be found.

a new christmas favorite - david harbour is memorable
24 December 2022
Disillusioned santa is presented with a world that has no belief in him, and the kids have turned into present junkies, just demanding the latest crap. He's ready to give up the whole scene

that's when he comes across trudy, a precious 7-year-old who still believes (and is present on his nice list to boot - those on the naughty list get a much different treat for christmas). Trudy is at her wealthy grandmother's house with the rest of the family for the holiday when a home invasion robbery takes place.

What the thieves don't know is that santa is going to take up the fight on trudy's side (little did anyone know about santa's brutal history). Hilarity and wonderful kills abound. Highly recommended. I could see this as a double feature with national lampoon's christmas vacation, with the wonderful beverly d'angelo starring in both films.

Honestly, at this point, i would watch david harbour rake leaves for 2 hours and never have a dull moment.

if the hallmark channel made horror movies
4 November 2022
It would look like this. No gore or swearing. No chemistry between any of the main actors, and certainly no interest from me to watch it ever, ever again. I saw that this was a crowd funded production, and that many of the contributors had cameos in the final film. Ok. I love ray wise and will watch him in anything, so that might have been the sole saving grace. It was also a surprise to see maria thayer, whom i remember from "strangers with candy", a comedy series i have watched multiple times and still actually find funny. Otherwise, not much for me here. They guy playing ryan, though it was mentioned multiple times how good-looking he was, didn't really pull that off. More of a budget paul rudd. Cannot recommend this film very heartily.

Horrifying and Claustrophobic
25 October 2022
A pitiless graverobber, while searching for valuables to sell in a cemetery, finds himself in a horrifying underground hell. As he looks for a way to escape, the situation becomes more dire. Narrow tunnels and coffins are everywhere. The special effects are amazing, and the feeling of being closed in is conveyed very effectively. I have a bit of claustrophobia myself, and it really did start to kick in a bit. Also, if you get queasy watching someone yank out fillings from decomposed corpeses, maybe skip this one.

David Hewlett, who is familiar from the Stargate series, is excellent here. Who knew he was such a good actor?

harmless kiddy halloween schtick with a great cast..
21 October 2022
Which unfortunately won't make up for the unpteenth rehash of the "canteen boy" character from SNL (or the "waterboy" character). I know adam can act - i really like him in "spanglish" and and a couple of other films he's made with a more dramatic storyline. This is just a sad fallback to old and creaky character that was never funny to begin with. What would be the reason for an adult man to do this, though maybe he's just trying to burn through his netflix paycheck. Good for the kids, i guess. It was kind of fun to spot the guest star (and there are a lot)- it certainly almost took my mind off watching adam do a "funny" voice with his chin stuck out and the idea that he's somehow mentally damaged.

well, they were trying something new, i guess
21 October 2022
How successful it is sort of depends on how much you paid attention to the previous movies. I thought it was pretty firmly established in the first film that the creeper only kills people after he does some vetting - he has a fondness for people he feels a connection to - ie: he wants their eyes or whatever body part is appealing. That's touched on, but also there's just rampant killing for seemingly no reason at all. I won't go into the "expansion" of the storyline because it didn't make much sense to me. It might have been better to just start another movie franchise instead of ruining the universe of this one. I would have thought at this point they might have tried to do a prequel, since it's never been explained what it is or where it came from. If you have seen the first three movies, stop there and don't bother with this one - it will make you frustrated.

rounds out the trilogy nicely - Aieeeeee! starfish! run!
31 May 2021
This is the 3rd entry in the "zoombies" film trilogy, and the MCU should be rightfully embarrassed.

In each film, the zombie plague occurs, just to animals, however, still leaving humans as the prey. No, the human victims don't seem to come back as zoombies themselves, they get to stay dead.

One thing to bear in mind while watching these 3 films (because, why aren't you doing that?), is that they were made on a shoestring budget. In this one, for instance, i laughed when a couple of characters were stopped by zombified river otters, which were apparently too complicated to animate by the SFX crew, because it cuts to the characters having run away from the otters and saying something like "wow, could you believe that?". I didn't, because i saw none of it on screen. I did appreciate, in this time, that they probably got the aquarium to film in inexpensively because it was likely shot during the pandemic, so there weren't any people visiting at the time. I bet we see a few more movies like this where ingenious film makers took advantage of hiring shooting locales on the cheap.

Other than just taking it all in and appreciating the goofy wonderfulness of these movies (certainly more entertaining than "sharknado"), which gets a little nod in this film because - sharks, it's silly fun, and that's all it needs to be.
