The Best of Enemies (2019)
Phenomenal Performances
In an age where stories that focus on racial tensions in the US tend to be either oversimplified and/or propogandistic, this truth-based story hits a grand slam home run. Henson and Rockwell both deserve Oscar nods for their electric performances, and the writing is spot on. My only issue with it would be that while the story really took its time to show Rockwell's character as a three dimensional human being with vulnerabilities, flaws (obviously), and attributes, it did not do this on the same level with Henson's character, who left me feeling like I barely got a glimpse of her life as a mother and activist. But all in all, well worth a few hours in a theater.
Pet Sematary (2019)
I was bored.
I am a King fan, though I admit I never read Pet Sematary and I never saw the original film adaptation, so I walked in not really knowing what to expect other than to see a pet cemetery somewhere in the movie. But the story was linear, no twists, no surprises, and certainly no subplots. Halfway through I was checking the time to figure out when it would end. Clarke's performance as the hero/doctor/dad was predictable and the most interesting part of the story was the wife's inner guilt about her sister's death. I recommend for a night of Netflix after you've already seen everything else on Netflix you want to see. I was just bored.
