Warning: Spoilers
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a 2023 fantasy comedy film written/directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Vacation, Game Night, Vacation Friends, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Horrible Bosses, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and In the Dark). It was co-written by Michael Gilio (Jolene and Kwik Stop). It's been in development since 2013. The budget was $150 million and it grossed $208.2 million worldwide at the box office!!!!

Before imprisonment, bard Edgin Darvis (played by: Chris Pine from Star Trek franchise, Smokin' Aces, Wonder Woman franchise, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Hell or High Water, and Don't Worry Darling) served as a member of the Harpers, an order of peacekeepers, until disciples of a Red Wizard he had arrested and killed his wife. Accompanied by barbarian Holga Kilgore (played by: Michelle Rodriguez from The Fast and Furious franchise, Machete franchise, Resident Evil franchise, and Avatar), Edgin attempted to make a new life for himself and his daughter Kira (played by: Chloe Coleman from 65, Avatar: The Way of Water, and My Spy) by turning to theft, teaming with amateur sorcerer Simon Aumar (played by: Justice Smith from Jurassic World franchise and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu), rogue conman Forge Fitzwilliam (played by: Hugh Grant from The Gentlemen, Operation Fortune, Glass Onion, Nine Months, and About a Boy), and Forge's mysterious acquaintance Sofina (played by: Daisy Head from Wrong Turn, Underworld: Blood Wars, and Ophelia). While raiding a Harper stronghold, Edgin attempted to steal a "Tablet of Reawakening" to resurrect his wife, but he and Holga were captured while their accomplices escaped. After two years' imprisonment in arctic Revel's End, the pair, unaware they have been pardoned, escape to Neverwinter and learn Forge has become Lord there after its prior lord fell mysteriously incapacitated.

Forge has been taking care of Kira, convincing her that Edgin's selfish greed led to his arrest. It is revealed that Sofina is a Red Wizard. They meet up with Simon's former crush Doric (played by: Sophia Lillis from Gretel & Hansel, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, Asteroid City, and IT) who can shapeshift. The band of misfits are forced to work together to achieve their own separate goals. They get the help of a teleportation staff obtained from Holga's halfling ex-husband Marlamin (played by: Bradley Cooper from A Star Is Born, The Mule, Silver Linings Playbook, Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Avengers franchise, and The Hangover trilogy), they are attacked by Thayan assassins sent by Sofina. Xenk (played by: Regé-Jean Page from The Gray Man, Mortal Engines, and Bridgerton) fights off the assassins and helps the group escape from Themberchaud. They all must trust each other enough to battle these evil forces that are trying to stop them in their journey. Can they pull it off????

Dungeons & Dragons has always been pretty popular with a certain group of people and it's kinda expanded over the years. Honor Among Thieves tries to be completely different compared to the original D and D films. The production design, locations, costumes, fx, and score are all high quality here. The script is solid but I feel like it tries way too hard to be funny at times and I honestly kinda wish Honor Among Thieves is a little more serious at times. Dungeons and Dragons seemed to be crafted specifically for lead actor Chris Pine with sarcastic humor approach that he usually brings to his characters. He is really good here, then again like I said before this role was definitely written for him so he's in his comfort zone when it comes to acting.

It's great to see Michelle Rodriguez in back to back big movies this year (Fast X) because she hasn't done much lately. She's a bad ass and her chemistry with Pine is great in this. Hugh Grant typically would be a really strange choice for the villain but since it's so comedy heavy it actually works here. As he gets older, he's been doing all kinds of different material which is nice to see. Yes, this is comedy so it fits but at the same time playing a bad guy is very different from his usual roles so it really shows his acting range here. Honor Among Thieves has a very solid supporting cast that includes Chloe Coleman, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head, and Bradley Cooper. This one has a decent amount of action. It's a very fun and entertaining movie, it's worth checking out. It's available on Paramount Plus right now for streaming, RECOMMENDED!!!!

Bone Cold (2022)
5/10
It was solid....
13 February 2024
Bone Cold is a 2022 thriller written, edited, produced, and directed by Billy Hanson (Coach Hop Playlist, Lightning Dogs, Survivor Type, and Total Ghostage). An experienced Black Ops sniper Jon Bryant (played by: Jonathan Stoddard from Falling for a Killer and Of the Devil) attempts a nightmarish escape after a failed mission, tracked by enemy soldiers hellbent on revenge, and hunted by something sinister and monstrous, hungry and determined!!!!

Bone Cold is a mix between a thriller and a horror feature. This one isn't as action packed as I hoped. Honestly, most of it is in the trailer. It still has some solid moments but it's more of a character study than anything here if you trying to figure out what sub-genre it fits the best. The lead was decent in Bone Cold, I think he mainly does soap opera and television work for the most part. It has a smaller cast so he definitely carries Bone Cold with his performance. It has some good creature fx, cinematography, and music for this very low budget film. This one definitely feels like a indie production which is nice because lots of features try too hard and it hurts the final product. Bone Cold knows exactly what it is has to do with it's small budget and they use their funding in the right departments. I enjoyed it but I'm not sure if it has great replay value to it. This is worth checking out at least once!!!!

The Tank (2023)
6/10
Underrated creature feature!
13 February 2024
The Tank is a 2023 horror film written, produced, and directed by Scott Walker (The Frozen Ground and Ordan's Forest). Ben (played by: Matt Whelan from Go Girls and Narcos) and his wife Jules (played by: Luciane Buchanan from The Night Agent and Sweet Tooth) are in for a shock when they inherit an abandoned property from Ben's recently deceased mother. She kept the place a secret. It's been untouched for around 40 years the house includes a stunning private cove and beach. The potential and perks of this location seem too good to be true. Why was this property kept a secret for so long? While Jules explores through the house looking for answers, Ben goes to repair the buried water tank, not knowing that in doing so he is unleashing a mysterious creature that protects it's home and surroundings at any cost including death to those it considers trespassers!!!!

This is definitely in the top 5 when it comes to Well Go USA releases this year! This one has a smaller cast but it works in it's favor. The two leads have amazing chemistry in The Tank. It's one of slick and creative ventures where they really focus on one main location and it becomes the star of it all. I will say that you have to be patient with The Tank because it takes around 40 minutes to really sink it's teeth into everything. The script is character development heavy and it has a nice slow burn build up to it. Don't expect a non stop thrill ride, lots of action, or anything like that with this horror feature.

It takes it's time to really explore more which makes you anticipate it a little more than usual but I personally think it's worth the wait. I really liked the old school special fx approach with this production. It reminded me something from the 80's. The Tank wants to keep it's monster more of a mystery which is very rare these days when it comes to cinema. I appreciate that the director took a different approach when it came to this sub-genre. The Tank feels more like a throwback and that's refreshing. I know this one will get mixed reactions but if you end up digging the vibe then you will most likely love this movie after it's finished. RECOMMENDED!!!!

Unwelcome (2022)
6/10
Way better than it's actual score on here!
13 February 2024
Unwelcome is a 2023 folk horror film written and directed by Jon Wright (Tormented, Grabbers, and Robot Overlords). It was co-written by Mark Stay (Robot Overlords). It grossed $392,846 worldwide at the box office. Warner Bro Pictures handled the distribution for this in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The great folks at Well Go USA handled the distribution and home video releases in the states. Young couple Jamie (played by: Douglas Booth from The Dirt) and Maya (played by: Hannah John-Kamen from Ant-Man and the Wasp) live together in London. After finding out that Maya is pregnant, Jamie celebrates with her only for them to be attacked by some local thugs.

Maya is left unharmed. In the aftermath of the assault, Jamie and Maya take the opportunity to move far away to a new home in rural Ireland, inherited from Jamie's great-aunt Maeve (played by: Niamh Cusack from Hereafter) after her death. The house requires some work, prompting them to hire the local Whelan family (played by: Colm Meaney from Con Air, played by: Kristian Nairn from Game of Thrones, and played by: Chris Walley from 1917) as builders. They are troubled by a warning that they should leave an offering of liver at a door of the house's back garden every night for the Red Caps that live in the forest, but accept it as a harmless superstition. Weird things start happening around the couple and their new home. The Whelans prove themselves to be violent and disturbed as time goes on. Jamie and Maya are forced to face both real life monsters and monsters in human form as their new journey slowly turns into a living nightmare!!!!

Unwelcome was a huge surprise to me, I didn't know what to expect with this one but it was much better than I thought it would be. Unwelcome provides some tense moments and suspense with a nice mix of creature horror. The script had some nice thrills and twists to it, I can see why it attracted so many familiar faces when it came to the cast. This Irish horror feature has some great performances that really elevate the overall production.

Everything about Unwelcome has a high quality to it which includes special fx, production design, locations, cinematography, music, and etc. It's nice to see someone put together a creature flick for the horror sub-genre because honestly you don't see too many of those made these days unlike the 80s when they were pumping them out. Unwelcome is one of the better horror features of the year, you need to check this one out. RECOMMENDED!!!!

Day Zero (I) (2022)
5/10
Solid independent zombie feature.
13 February 2024
Day Zero is a 2022 horror film edited and directed by Joey De Guzman (The Ghosting and Gen Z). It was written by Ays De Guzman (Da Possessed, Only You, and The Reunion). It was produced by Erik Matti (On the Job, Buybust, ABCs of Death 2, and Rabid). It was shot in the Philippines. When society starts to breaks down due to a violent outbreak that turns victims into undead monsters, a former elite soldier known as Emon (played by: professional fighter Brandon Vera from Buybust and Kamandag) is forced to break out of jail to find and save his family before it's too late!!!!

There's something different about Asian zombie flicks that always make them stand out from the rest & Day Zero is no different. This one has a simple storyline and concept but it works for this. It has a great balance of horror and action here. The special fx were top notch for this lower budget production. It had some brutal kills & I really enjoyed the look of the zombies. As far as acting goes, it's exactly what you would expect for this type of movie.

Fighter Brandon Vera is a bad ass in Day Zero & those undead killers keep him busy throughout everything in this. I didn't know what to expect with Day Zero but it didn't disappoint at all. Turn off your brain and just enjoy the entertainment. This one goes by fast and it's very fun. Well Go has been killing it lately when it comes to these darker films. If you are into Asian cinema, Horror, Zombies, and Action then you need to check this one out ASAP!!!!

Roman Holiday (1953)
7/10
One of the greatest romantic comedies ever made!
13 February 2024
Roman Holiday is a 1953 romantic comedy film directed and produced by William Wyler (Funny Girl, Ben-Hur, The Big Country, and The Desperate Hours). It was written by Dalton Trumbo (Papillon, The Horsemen, Spartacus, and Johnny Got His Gun), Ian McLellan Hunter (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Eye Witness, and The Adventures of Robin Hood), & John Dighton (The Devil's Disciple, Champagne Charlie, & The Next of Kin). It was produced by Robert Wyler (Detective Story, The Heiress, and Anybody Here Seen Kelly?). It was nominated for 10 Oscars and it won 3 during the Academy Awards. The budget was $1.5 million and it ended up grossing $12 million worldwide at the box office!!!!

Ann (played by: Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Fair Lady, Charade, and Sabrina), a crown princess from an unnamed European nation is on a state visit to Rome. She becomes frustrated with her tightly scheduled life and secretly leaves her country's embassy. The delayed effect of a sedative makes her fall asleep on a bench, where Joe Bradley (played by: Gregory Peck from The Omen, Cape Fear, To Kill a Mockingbird, and How the West Was Won), an expatriate reporter for the "American News Service" finds her without recognizing who she is. Thinking that she is intoxicated, Joe lets her spend the night in his apartment. The next morning, Joe gives his editor, Mr. Hennessy (played by: Hartley Power from Island in the Sun, Dead of Night, and Living Dangerously) false details of his attendance at the princess' press conference.

When Hennessy informs him that the event had been cancelled and shows him a news item about the princess' "sudden illness". He realizes who is asleep in his apartment. Seeing an opportunity, Joe privately calls his photographer friend Irving Radovich (played by: Eddie Albert from Spider-Man: The Animated Series, The Twilight Zone, and Green Acres) to ask him to secretly take pictures. Hennessy offers to pay $5000 for the article and exclusive interview with the princess. He bets Joe $500 that he won't be able to get it. She leaves his place to enjoy her newfound freedom. Joe starts to follow her and "accidentally" meets Ann on the Spanish Steps. This time, he convinces her to spend the day with him. That night, at a dance on a boat that her barber had invited her to, government agents called in by the embassy spot Ann and try to forcibly take her away. Joe, Irving, and the barber rush in to save her from the abductors. Joe is falls into the river & Ann jumps in to save him. They swim across & kiss as they sit shivering on the riverbank. Both of them are still hiding their true identities from each other. What will happen next for the two strangers????

Roman Holiday is one of the best romantic comedies and films from the 50's of all time. You fall in love with Ann just like Joe is in the movie. Audrey Hepburn gives a performance of a lifetime in Roman Holiday and she deserved winning the Oscar for this performance. Audrey Hepburn was so classy and beautiful, a true leading lady when it came to Hollywood. I love the innocence of her character. She discovers so much about herself in a such short amount of time. She had a few small roles before this but nothing major. This is one of the greatest debuts ever when it comes to movies. Gregory Peck honestly never gave a bad performance in his entire career and he was a great counterpart to Hepburn in this. The con man that falls for his work. Their chemistry is one of the greatest love connections in cinema history. The supporting cast was really good but the two leads just brought everything to a whole new level. You couldn't keep your eyes off them and it just building up as time went on. I've always heard about this one but I didn't check it out until I got the original Paramount Presents release. I was sleeping on it and I hope others will give it more attention after this home video resurrection. They try so hard in the sub-genre but this one was effortless and felt so natural with everything. After all these years, it still holds up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Kandahar (2023)
6/10
Similar to The Covenant.
13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Kandahar (aka Mission Kandahar) is a 2023 action film directed by Ric Roman Waugh (National Champions, Greenland, Angel Has Fallen, Snitch, and Felon). It was written and produced by Mitchell Lafortune (Last Breath). It was produced by Gerard Butler (Machine Gun Preacher, Chasing Mavericks, The Vanishing, Hunter Killer, and Copshop). It grossed $9.1 million at the box office!!!! Tom Harris (played by: Gerard Butler from The Fallen Trilogy, Gamer, 300, Greenland, Den of Thieves, Law Abiding Citizen, and RockNRolla) is a freelance undercover operative working for the CIA to insert malware into an Iranian nuclear research facility.

Tom's cover is a field technician for a Swiss communications contractor. His mission is successful, and the malware causes the facility to self destruct, preventing the Iranians from acquiring more nuclear bombs. The Iranian government has been monitoring a British journalist in Iran named Luna (played by: Nina Toussaint-White from The Feed, Bodyguard, The Sister, and GameFace). She receives evidence from a whistle blower of the CIA's ongoing sabotage of Iran's nuclear programs. After the facility is destroyed, she is arrested by an Iranian security agency. She tells the Iranians she suspects a link between the facility's destruction and the Swiss contractor because their contracts are next to government sites. The next day, Harris's partner is murdered by the Iranian Special Force after they are compromised. Tom visits his CIA handler, Roman Chalmers (played by: Travis Fimmel from Vikings, The Baytown Outlaws, Warcraft, Dreamland, and Raised by Wolves). Roman is a Muslim convert, living under the outward pretense of a Dubai socialite. Tom accepts Roman's lucrative CIA contract for a job in Afghanistan. Due to an intelligence leak, the news names Tom as the operative responsible for the destruction of the nuclear facility.

With his cover now blown, the mission in Herat is aborted. Roman directs Tom and his translator Mohammad "Mo" Doud (played by: Navid Negahban from Homeland, 12 Strong, and Aladdin) to an extraction point in Kandahar. Pakistan wants to ransom Tom to the highest bidder. They are chased by the Iranians and a Pakistani agent Kahil Nassir (played by: Ali Fazal from Death on the Nile, Furious 7, and House Arrest) in Herat. They elude Kahil and the Iranian pursuers in escape to the desert. Tom and Mo seek aid from Tom's friend, an Afghan warlord not associated with the governing Taliban. Mo reveals to Tom and the warlord that the warlord killed Mo's son years ago. This sets up a dangerous and awkward situation. The two men must find a way to get through all the back stabbing and everyone that's trying to eliminate them for good during the mission. Can they get through this chaos and follow through on their plan to complete the mission????

Kandahar is another entertaining collaboration between director Ric Roman Waugh and action star Gerard Butler. You can't go wrong when these two work together. This is a nice mix of action, drama, thriller, and war. Gerard Butler gives a solid performance as the lead here, he knows exactly what to do with these type of movies. It's loaded with action and this one has a nice script with suspense filled story. It has a decent supporting cast which includes Vikings star Travis Fimmel. Kandahar kinda reminded me of The Covenant from the same year. Both films were released really close to each other which is interesting. It has great locations, quality production design, and attention grabbing score. It's one of the better action releases and it has some strong replay value. RECOMMENDED!

Odd comedy with an all star cast.
13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Fool's Paradise is a 2023 satirical comedy film written and directed by actor Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Cool Kids, I want you Back, and How it Ends) in his directorial debut. It grossed $855,173 during it's limited theatrical run. A mute John Doe (played by: Charlie Day from The Super Mario Bros, Fist Fight, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and Hotel Artemis) with the mental capacity of a five-year-old is released from a mental hospital when the state cannot afford his treatment. He begins living on the streets and taking direction from whomever he comes across. While making a biopic about Billy the Kid, the Producer is incensed that method actor Sir Tom Bingsley (played by: Charlie Day from Horrible Bosses 1/2, The Lego Movie 1/2, Pacific Rim, and Going the Distance) refuses to leave his trailer.

Since this costs the film time and money, the Producer (played by: Ray Liotta from Goodfellas, Cop Land, Smokin Aces, Narc, Cocaine Bear, Hannibal, and Field of Dreams) resorts to using a stand-in. The Producer comes across the John Doe selling oranges on the street and hires him due to the striking resemblance to Bingsley. Meanwhile, Lenny (played by: Ken Jeong from The Hangover Trilogy, Scoob!, My Spy, Dr Ken, and Community) is a struggling publicist who has not been able to maintain one client since moving to L. A. and bribes his way onto studio lots to look for talent. Lenny sees John Doe filming the biopic and misunderstands his name to be "Latte Pronto" due to the Producer demanding coffee. After Bingsley dies in a misguided method acting technique of hanging himself, "Billy the Kid" is forced to continue filming with Pronto as the star. Although hindered by Pronto's lack of acting talent and his continued looks directly into camera, his co-stars Christiana Dior (played by: Kate Beckinsale from the Underworld franchise, Click, Van Helsing, Vacancy, Pearl Harbor, and Total Recall) and Chad Luxt (played by: Adrien Brody from Winning Time, The Pianist, Predators, Peaky Blinders, Summer of Sam, and King Kong) are inspired by the unique avant-garde performance and emulate his acting style.

Critics praising Pronto's performance of breaking the fourth wall by looking into the camera. At the after party, Lenny asks Pronto to confirm they will never end their business relationship. When Pronto cannot respond to Lenny's request. He gets an offer to star in "Mosquito Boy" directed by Lex Tanner (played by: Jason Sudeikis from Ted Lasso, Horrible Bosses 1/2, We're the Millers, Booksmart, and Hall Pass). Pronto is blamed in the media after getting arrested during the production. Pronto is injured and a stand-in is used for the majority of the movie. The movie is a colossal failure at the box office and Pronto's representation leaves him. Dior is frustrated with her husband's failing stardom so she divorces him, takes the children, and begins dating Luxt. Pronto goes back to living on the street. Pronto befriends a homeless man named Dagger (played by: Common from Smokin Aces, John Wick Chapter 2, and Suicide Squad) and saves his life, gaining media acclaim and is awarded the Key to the City by the Mayor of Los Angeles. The Mayor privately encourages Pronto to run for office on an anti-corporate platform since his acting career is over. The rich and powerful Cote brothers (played by: Tom O'Rion from Major Dad and John Malkovich from Con Air) have Pronto kidnapped to discourage his political career. He gets another chance at acting after dealing with so much bad luck and he agrees to leave politics to the Cote brothers. Can the once rising star get back into his former life before it's all too late????

Are you a Charlie Day fan? If so, you might really enjoy this one considering he's the star, he wrote the script, and he directed this satire. Day definitely went with a weird approach for this comedy. He made the lead character a mute in Fool's Paradise. I find it very bizarre because he's hilarious and his voice is unique plus it always add to his style of humor.

I think he had a solid performance here but honestly it wasn't what I was expecting from him. It has some interesting costumes, set designs, and cinematography that makes it stand out a little more compared to your typical comedy. The best thing about Fool's Paradise is it's all star cast. It's loaded with talent and familiar faces, Day must have called in all his favors for this one. It has Ray Liotta, Jason Sudeikis, John Malkovich, Common, Ken Jeong, Adrien Brody, Kate Beckinsale, Jason Bateman, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Edie Falco, Jimmi Simpson, Dean Norris, Glenn Howerton, and George Lopez. I enjoyed Fool's Paradise because it's very weird and somewhat original but I'm honestly not sure how much I would want to revisit it in the future. It's definitely worth checking out at least once.

House Party (I) (2023)
5/10
Nothing special but it was decent.
13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
House Party is a 2023 comedy film directed by Calmatic (White Men Can't Jump and Various Music Videos) in his feature directorial debut. It was written by Jamal Olori (Atlanta, SNL, and Swarm) and Stephen Glover (Atlanta and Swarm). It's considered as a reboot of the 1990 film of the same name. In Los Angeles, Kevin (played by: Jacob Latimore from Detroit, Collateral Beauty, The Chi, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Damon (played by: Tosin Cole from Till, Doctor Who, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) are two best friends who work as house cleaners and aspiring club promoters. Kevin also aspires to make music and get a steady income to support himself and his young daughter Destiny. The two of them are dropped from a promotion gig by Kyle and his gang due to Damon having illicit involvement with Guile's cousin. While the two of them are working at a mansion, Kevin is informed by his childhood friend and current supervisor Venus (played by: Karen Obilom from Doom Patrol and Games People Play) that he and Damon will be fired due to cameras catching them goofing off on the job. Damon finds out that the mansion they are cleaning belongs to LeBron James (played by: himself from Space Jam: A New Legacy and Trainwreck), who is in India on a two-week meditation retreat, and proposes that he and Kevin host a party there for LeBron's celebrity contacts.

Kevin asks his friend Venus to him out with this situation. They take advantage of a lapse in security to break into LeBron's trophy room and steal his Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 championship ring. Damon is later beaten up by Nick and his gang, but then sees his idol Mya (played by: herself from Cursed and Chicago). Mya offers for Damon to leave the party with her, but Damon declines in order to help Kevin keep the party from falling apart. LeBron's ring has been stolen, and try desperately to find it. Kid Cudi (played by: himself from X, Need for Speed, and Westworld) tells them that the Illuminati possesses a copy of every sports championship ring, and the duo are desperate enough to take up his offer. All hell keeps breaking loose and they are forced to fix everything quickly before it becomes a bigger problem. They need secure the replacement ring and repair the damage to the mansion before King James returns home. Can these two turn this mistake into something good????

The House Party reboot is definitely better than the last few sequels but it doesn't compare to the original trilogy. It was originally supposed to be an HBO Max exclusive but it ended up getting a limited theatrical run before it's premiere on there. The two leads here have great chemistry and it elevates this production. The comedy is hit or miss with this reboot but it has some really hilarious moments thrown in. The supporting cast is decent but it has some major cameos in this one featuring some familiar faces plus an amazing surprise towards the end which makes this worth checking out no matter what. It could have been a little more consistent but it was fun and entertaining for the most part. It has some decent replay value. I'm hoping this new version gives the originals more attention. I'm very curious if they will do a sequel to this one. Give it a shot, it's on HBO Max right now!!!!

Hilarious Netflix crime flick!!!
13 February 2024
The Man from Toronto is a 2022 action comedy film directed by Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3, Red Hill, and The Hitman's Bodyguard 1/2). It was written by Robbie Fox (In the Army Now, Playing for Keeps, So I Married an Axe Murderer, and Grand-Daddy Day Care), Chris Bremner (Bad Boys 4, National Treasure 3, and Bad Boys for Life), and Jason Blumenthal (Bio-Dome). It originally premiered on Netflix!!!! Teddy Jackson (played by: Kevin Hart from Ride Along 1/2, Central Intelligence, Jumanji franchise, Night School, and Get Hard) is a struggling fitness entrepreneur in Yorktown, Virginia who is fired from his job at a local gym for giving ad brochures without the gym's address. He decides not to tell his wife Lori (played by: Jasmine Mathews from Big George Foreman, The Tomorrow War, The Rookie, and Heathers) and takes her to Onancock for her birthday. Leaving her at a spa, Teddy arrives at the wrong cabin, where a man named Coughlin is being held hostage. Mistaken for "the Man from Toronto", a mysterious assassin with a talent for brutal interrogation, the clueless Teddy manages to intimidate Coughlin (played by: Jason MacDonald from The Vampire Diaries) into giving up a code.

The cabin is raided by the FBI, who convince Teddy to pose as the Man from Toronto to help capture would-be Venezuelan dictator Colonel Marin (played by: Alejandro De Hoyos from The Contractor) in exchange for the FBI paying off his overdue mortgage. Much to Teddy's jealousy, an agent is assigned to accompany Lori and her friend Anne (played by: Kaley Cuoco from Harley Quinn, The Big Bang Theory, The Wedding Ringer, and The Flight Attendant) on a day of luxury in D. C., telling them the trip has been provided by Teddy's job. As Toronto, Teddy meets Marin's wife Daniela (played by: Lela Loren from Power), who flies him to San Juan, Puerto Rico with orders to identify Green and bring him to the Colonel in D. C. En route, Teddy is ambushed by the Man from Toronto (played by: Woody Harrelson from Cheers, Natural Born Killers, Zombieland 1/2, Venom 1/2, Midway, and Solo: A Star Wars Story), whose real name is Randy. Planning to complete the $2 million contract by maintaining the ruse that Teddy is Toronto, Randy informs his Handler (played by: Ellen Barkin from Animal Kingdom, Sea of Love, The Fan, Diner, and Johnny Handsome), who sends another assassin, the Man from Miami (played by: Pierson Fode from Kill Game). Randy and Teddy arrive at a tech conference. Teddy must try his best to scam his way into the Man from Toronto's brutal reputation without being exposed. He's completely out of his element but dumb luck might be on his side. Can these two get along enough to pull off this near impossible mission????

It's great to see a Netflix film get a real home video release after it;s streaming debut! The Man from Toronto has a nice balance of action and comedy here. It has a sharp screenplay that brings out of the best out of it's cast. I've always been fond of the hitman sub-genre. This mistaken identity flick is a blast. This one puts a hilarious spin on it when it comes to both of those type of features. Both Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson have great chemistry together in this. It has a solid supporting cast that includes Jasmine Mathews, Kaley Cuoco, and Ellen Barkin. The Man from Toronto has beautiful locations, quality production design, and a nice soundtrack to go with this fun ride. It's very entertaining and the replay value is strong here. It's one of the best starring roles and features from Kevin Hart in a long time, RECOMMENDED!!!!

Nice isolated thriller!!!!
13 February 2024

It was written by written by Ben Hopkins (In Search of Monsters, Marionette, and Simon Magus). The perfect plan is set up for robbing the prized possession of a famed art collector. Everything seems to go as planned at first but Nemo finds out the hard way that there is no such thing as a foolproof plan. The distressing wail of the security alarm system crushes the criminal's dreams of his planned early retirement. Nemo finds himself trapped in an stylized prison of concrete and glass filled with a top notch collection of works of art that could set him good for the rest of his life. Now, the predator has become the prey. As the days slowly turn into weeks, his hunger, his thirst, and he becomes more fatigue as he's trapped inside, the doomed invader must keep a clear head to keep the living nightmare situation under control and beat the damn near impossible odds. The intruder is on his last legs before it's all over. Will Nemo escape from the inside????

Inside kinda flew under the radar when it was originally released. I didn't even notice it in theaters so I'm guessing it had a very small run. The first time Inside caught my attention was when it premiered on Peacock. It kinda has a independent vibe to it, I know it's from Universal but it just feels a little smaller than their typical productions. That's actually a good thing here, it's a fresh breath of air. It's a little different, it's basically a single person feature with a small amount of dialogue. I love how creative filmmakers get when their movie is one of those one location types. Inside feels very claustrophobic which elevates the suspense and thrills here.

Willem Dafoe is one of the greatest character actors of all time and he gets to be the lead in this. Very few performances could make something like this work but Dafoe does it with ease in Inside. If you are a fan of his, this is a must see. I enjoy this unique take on the crime sub-genre with some survival and suspense thrown in the mix. Inside was way way way better than expected. I hope it gets more attention from this home video release plus the fact that it's on Peacock right now. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Sisu (2022)
7/10
Very impressed!!!
13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Sisu is a 2022 action revenge thriller film written and directed by Jalmari Helander (Big Game, Wingman, Rare Exports, Ukkonen, and Zero Deux). It was produced by Petri Jokiranta (Big Game, Rare Exports, Jungle of Dreams, A Man's Job, and Eila). The budget was 6 million and it grossed $14 million at the box office!!!! In late 1944 during the Lapland War, Aatami Korpi (played by: Jorma Tommila from Rare Exports, Big Game, The Christmas Party, Kimmo, and Priest of Evil) lives alone with his horse and faithful Bedlington Terrier while he prospects in the Lapland wilderness. Aatami uncovers a rich gold deposit, where he collects a hefty amount of nuggets and heads towards Rovaniemi. Along the way, Aatami encounters a large Waffen SS platoon led by the ruthless SS Obersturmführer Bruno Helldorf (played by: Aksel Hennie from Max Manus: Man of War, The Martian, Headhunters, and The Cloverfield Paradox), who are destroying villages during their retreat towards Norway and have taken several Finnish women captive. Helldorf takes little interest in Aatami, letting him pass. Aatami is soon accosted by a second group of soldiers who discover his saddlebags full of gold and prepare to execute him, but he swiftly kills them all. Alerted by the gunfire, Helldorf investigates and discovers the massacre and one of Aatami's gold nuggets.

Helldorf and his tank pursue Aatami to the edge of a minefield, where Aatami's horse is killed by a landmine. After retrieving Aatami's dog tag, Helldorf's second-in-command Wolf (played by: Jack Doolan from The Boys, Marcella, Cemetery Junction, and White Gold) learns over the radio of Aatami's past. After losing his family while fighting as a commando during the Winter War, the vengeful Aatami became a legendary "one-man death squad" nicknamed Koschei ("the Immortal"). Helldorf defies his orders to continue retreating in order to hunt down Aatami and take the gold. The German soldiers dispatch dogs to follow Aatami's trail. Aatami sends his own dog away before using petrol from one of the German trucks to cover his scent. It's an all out war for the brutal loner against this vicious group of soldiers looking to end the blood thirst for once and for all. Will Aatami get his revenge against the Nazis before they take full control over everything????

Sisu delivers all the goods when it comes to what you would hope for when you are watching a revenge flick! The Revenge sub-genre is one of my favorites but they don't really make that many of these right now. John Wick kinda sparked more interest in it so that's probably why we have newer features like Sisu. I tried to see this one in theaters but it didn't last long around here. Who doesn't enjoy seeing Nazis getting slaughtered? Sisu gives the audience plenty of that during it's running time. The main character is very interesting, I've generally been more interested in antiheroes rather than your typical cliche good guy. Jorma Tommila has a great performance here and he is brutal in this.

Jorma Tommila is mainly known as a character actor when it comes to Finnish cinema but he grabs all your attention as the lead in Sisu. Aksel Hennie is a quality counterpart to Jorma, he's is a nasty character with no morals. Aksel Hennie has one of the better nazi villain turns in a long time. You just want to see this man die. This one has a solid supporting cast. Sisu never holds back when it comes to the kills and violence. It's loaded with suspense and thrills, it keeps you on your toes. This film stays with you after you experienced it. It's very entertaining in the most possible dark way. Sisu has amazing replay value, it's a must own. It's one of my personal favorites of the year, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

One of the better De Niro features in recent years!
13 February 2024
About My Father is a 2023 comedy film directed by Laura Terruso (Good Girls get High, Work It, and I want my phone Back). It was written by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco (Is It Me?, Stay Hungry, Aren't You Embarrassed?, and Why would you do That?) and Austen Earl (The Santa Clauses, Happy Together, and The Millers). The film is loosely based on Sebastian's life and his relationship with his father. The budget was $29 million and it grossed $18.2 million at the box office.

Sebastian (played by: Sebastian Maniscalco from The Irishman, The Super Mario Bros, Green Book, and Tag) informs his traditional Italian immigrant father Salvo (played by: Robert De Niro from Heat, Goodfellas, Casino, Meet the Parents/Fockers/Little Fockers, The War with Grandpa, Dirty Grandpa, Joker, The King of Comedy, Analyze This/That, and Silver Linings Playbook) about his plan to propose to his American girlfriend Ellie (played by: Leslie Bibb from Iron Man 1/2, Law Abiding Citizen, The Babysitter 2, Running with the Devil, and Tag) but Salvo insists on joining them for a weekend with her parents (played by: David Rasche from Burn After Reading and Kim Cattrall from Big Trouble in Little China). Despite the clash between their two cultures and initial perception of having nothing in common he decides to let his father join him for the big weekend. Can they all get along or will it be pure chaos????

About My Father brings the iconic Robert De Niro back to the big screen. Since his nasty divorce, the legend has been forced to take roles in all kinds of small and b-movie projects the last few years. So it's nice to see him in a bigger movie every once in awhile like this. I've noticed as De Niro has gotten older, the comedy genre is his most regular role these days. It works because he has always had great comedic timing and he's just hilarious. About My Father is loosely based on Sebastian's real life. Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco is the lead here.

Honestly, he's really not that great of an actor but he is able to basically play himself in this one. He took full control on this project and About My Father turned out good. Actors like De Niro and Leslie Bibb really elevated Sebastian in this comedy. De Niro is my all time favorite actor, this is one of his better performances in awhile. His chemistry with everyone is hilarious. It has a solid supporting cast with a few familiar faces in it. It has a little bit of everything thrown in here which includes drama, romance, father/son, and the obvious comedy. This is definitely worth the watch, it has some really humorous moments. RECOMMENDED!!!!

One of the most underrated Halloween films!
13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later (aKa Halloween H20 and Halloween 7) is a 1998 slasher film directed by Steve Miner (Friday the 13th 2, Friday the 13th 3, House, Day of the Dead, Warlock, and Lake Placid). It was written by Robert Zappia (The Tom and Jerry Show, Prey for the Devil, and Tappy Toes) and Matt Greenberg (Reign of Fire, Pet Sematary, 1408, Seventh Son, The Prophecy 2, Children of the Corn 3, and Masters of Horror). It was produced by Kevin Williamson (Scream franchise, Dawson's Creek, The Following, Sick, Tell me a Story, and Cursed). It is the seventh installment in the Halloween franchise. H20 is a direct sequel to 1981's Halloween II. The budget was $17 million and it grossed $75 million at the box office!!!!

Nearly twenty-years have passed since Michael Myers (played by: Chris Durand from Scream 2 and Uncle Sam) escaped from Smith's Grove and returned to his hometown of Haddonfield to kill his long-lost sister, Laurie Strode. Following an explosion caused by Dr. Sam Loomis at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, Michael's body was never found, and he was presumed dead. On October 29, 1998, Marion Wittington (played by: Nancy Stephens from the Halloween franchise), Loomis' former colleague who took care of him until his death, returns home to the house they shared in Langdon, Illinois, only to find that it has been broken into and discovers that the file on Laurie Strode (played by: Jamie Lee Curtis from the Halloween franchise, Trading Places, True Lies, Prom Night, Terror Train, A Fish Called Wanda, and Knives Out) is missing.

This leads the killing machine to his sister. In Summer Glen, California, Laurie (having faked her death to stay hidden from Michael) lives under the identity of "Keri Tate" along with her son, John (played by: Josh Hartnett from 30 Days of Night, The Faculty, Sin City, and Black Hawk Down), is the headmistress of Hillcrest Academy, a private boarding school, where she is supported by her secretary Norma Watson (played by: Janet Leigh from Psycho and The Fog) and guidance counselor Will Brennan (played by: Adam Arkin from Sons of Anarchy and Northern Exposure)), who she is also in a relationship with. Her past has caused her to suffer from chronic nightmares as well as becoming an alcoholic. Back at the academy, most of the faculty and students are preparing to leave for a trip to Yosemite. Laurie has forbidden John to go, afraid that something bad will happen to him while he is gone.

John's girlfriend, Molly Cartwell (played by: Michelle Williams from Dawson's Creek, The Fabelmans, Venom 1/2, and Manchester by the Sea), is unable to attend as well prompting fellow couple, Charlie Deveraux (played by: Adam Hann-Byrd from Jumanji and The Ice Storm) and Sarah Wainthrope (played by: Jodi Lyn O'Keefe from She's all That and Whatever it Takes), to forego the trip so that they can all have a Halloween party on campus. Ronny Jones (played by: LL Cool J from Deep Blue Sea and Mindhunters), a security guard lets John and Charlie sneak out of school. Laurie reveals her identity to Will and in the process discovers a connection between her age when Michael first came after her which is also how old her son is now. Upon going to call John she finds out that not only are the phones not working, but that he did not go on the trip. She arms herself with a revolver looking for them. Michael Myers is out for blood and he wants a deadly re-connection with his family. Can Laurie survive this monster once again? Or Will everyone close to her pay for her past life????

Halloween H20 is one of the best sequels when it comes to the iconic horror series. I know this one gets mixed reviews from time to time but I've always loved this one. I will admit, it's one of tamer entries when it comes to slasher franchise, it completely ignores the previous few sequels like they never existed, and Michael Myers basically doesn't pop up much until the 2nd half of the movie but it still delivers. It has a great script and it's great to see things pick up from the original Halloween sequel with the legendary Laurie Strode returning.

It does have a Scream vibe to it but that's not a surprise considering who the producer was. John Carpenter was originally going to return for H20 but he demanded too much money so the studio went with horror veteran Steve Miner instead as the director. He is one of the most underrated filmmakers in the horror sub-genre. Halloween H20 has a nice pace/flow, suspense, and everything else is at a high quality. Jamie Lee Curtis is amazing in this. It's like she's never left the iconic role. This sequel has a great supporting cast with so many familiar faces including an Oscar winner. Personally, I don't think any sequel or prequel since this one has even came close to H20. I hope this gets more love with this brand new home video release because I feel like it's very underrated. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

One of the better Blumhouse efforts!!!!
13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The Black Phone is a 2021 horror film co-written, produced, and directed by Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, Sinister, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Hellraiser: Inferno). It was co-written by C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister 1 and 2) and it's based on a short story from Joe Hill (Locke & Key, Horns, In the Tall Grass, Creepshow, and NOS4A2). It was produced by Jason Blum (The Purge franchise, Insidious franchise, Get Out, Split/Glass, Happy Death Day 1/2, Halloween, and Upgrade) It had a budget of $16 million and it grossed $155.6 million worldwide at the box office. It's currently available for streaming on Peacock if you want to check it out before you consider buying it!!!!

In 1978, a masked serial child abductor nicknamed "The Grabber" (played by: Ethan Hawke from The Purge, Sinister, Training Day, Moon Knight, Daybreakers, and Gattaca) prowls the streets of a Denver suburb. Siblings Finney (played by: Mason Thames from For All Mankind and Walker) and Gwen Blake (played by: Madeleine McGraw from Ant-Man and the Wasp, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Toy Story 4, and American Sniper) live in the area with their abusive, alcoholic father (played by: Jeremy Davies from The House That Jack Built, Justified, Helter Skelter, and Lost). At school, Finney is frequently bullied and harassed. He has a friendship with a classmate Robin (played by: Miguel Cazarez Mora), who fends off the bullies. A boy from another school that Finney knew named Bruce (played by: Tristan Pravong from Forever and a Day). He is abducted by the Grabber. Gwen, who has psychic dreams much like her late mother, dreams of Bruce's kidnapping and sees that he was taken by a man in a Oni mask driving a black van. Detectives interview Gwen but struggle to believe her claims. The Grabber abducts Robin, as well as Finney days later. Finney awakens in a soundproofed basement. On the wall is a disconnected black rotary phone that the Grabber says does not work. Later, Finney hears the phone ring and answers it. He starts talking to some of The Grabber's past victims and some even give him advice on how to survive this living nightmare. Is he losing his mind or this is a grim reality that's trying to help him escape death from this real life monster????

The Black Phone reminds me of an earlier Stephen King type of novel which is iconic because it's based on his son Joe Hill's short story. The Black Phone is a nice mix of horror and suspense thriller with supernatural elements thrown in. The horror sub-genre has been very hit or miss lately but this is one of the better ones recently and definitely one of the best of this year. The script has some nice character development and it builds up tension until the very end. I haven't seen most of these kids in anything but the casting was spot on especially because most of them were new or unknown during this so it felt more realistic. I've been a big fan of director Scott Derrickson for years now and he basically left Doctor Strange Two to do this smaller horror feature when he had creative issues with that bigger sequel.

Ethan Hawke gives one of his darkest and creepiest performances as The Grabber in The Black Phone. He's the best thing about this production, he increased the quality of everything in this with his portrayal of a very disturbed man. The Grabber has potential one of the best villains in a long time. This one has some solid violence and gore but it's more psychological than anything. The finale act really delivers and it has some twists. This is a must seen for horror and Blumhouse fans, it's currently still available for streaming on Peacock plus this great brand new home video reissue release from Universal Pictures, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

It didn't really feel like an Evil Dead feature to me.
13 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Evil Dead Rise is a 2023 supernatural horror film written and directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground, 50 States of Fright, Minutes Past Midnight, and Ghost Train). It was produced by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead franchise, Spider-Man franchise, 65, Umma, The Grudge franchise, Don't Breathe 1/2, Crawl, Poltergeist, Time Cop, Hard Target, and Drag Me Into Hell) and Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead franchise, Burn Notice, Black Friday, My Name Is Bruce, Jack Of All Trades, and Crimewave). It is the fifth installment of the Evil Dead film series. The budget was an estimated $19 million and it grossed $146.7 million at the box office!!!!

One day earlier, upset at learning she is pregnant, guitar technician Beth (played by: Lily Sullivan from Barkskins, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Mental) visits her sister Ellie (played by: Alyssa Sutherland from The Mist, Vikings, and Blood Vessel), a tattoo artist and single mother to teenagers Danny (played by: Morgan Davies from The Hunter) and Bridget (played by: Gabrielle Echols from Reminiscence), and child Kassie (played by: Nell Fisher from Northspur), in their home at Monde Apartments, a condemned Los Angeles apartment complex. The building is shaken by an dangerous earthquake while the children are in its basement parking lot, uncovering a concealed chamber.

Danny investigates it, discovering religious artifacts, three phonograph records from 1923, and a strange old book that he takes up to his room, believing he could possibly sell it and use the money to help Ellie. The initial record details rejected efforts by a priest to research the book, revealed to be one of three volumes of the Naturom Demonto. The subsequent record reveals the priest continued his research in secret and recites an incantation that summons demonic entities known as Deadites. The building's power fails and Ellie is possessed by an unseen force. She returns to the apartment in a trance, menacingly threatens her family. They are forced to fight against the person that they all love the most. They want to save her from this evil but is it even possible at this point? They are struggling to defend themselves as Ellie's army of Deadites start to outnumber them, can they win this brutal battle????

I personally think Evil Dead Rise should have been called something else because it honestly doesn't feel like a real Evil Dead movie to me. It does feature some traditional elements that allows it to be connected to the legendary horror series but it just comes off as a completely different film. I wish it was more like the opening to this which was great. That had the most Evil Dead vibe when it comes to Rise. This just feels like very gruesome possession flick to me. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this one. It's one of goriest and most brutal mainstream horror movies of the year.

It doesn't hold back when it comes to violence, kills, and blood. The script definitely delivers when it comes to the suspense and thrills. The isolated apartment complex works well when you take in it's atmosphere. The cast is really solid in this especially the two leads Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan. Evil Dead Rise has excellent special fx, production design, cinematography, and music. It's one of the better horror films of the year but please do not go into expecting a traditional Evil Dead feature because this one is very different. This is the type of movie that you appreciate a little more after a revisit since you know what to expect while checking it out again. It's now available for streaming on HBO Max if you are curious before making a purchase. RECOMMENDED!!!!

Cobweb (2023)
9/10
My favorite horror film from last year!
13 February 2024
Cobweb is a 2023 horror film directed by Samuel Bodin (Lazy Company, T. A. N. K, and Marianne) in his directorial debut. It was written by Chris Thomas Devlin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre). It was produced by actor Seth Rogen (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, The Boys, Preacher, Good Boys, Blockers, The Night Before, This is the End, Funny People, Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked Up, and The 40 Year Old Virgin). It grossed $7.4 million at the box office!!!!

Peter (played by: Woody Norman from The Last Voyage of the Demeter and The War of the Worlds) is a shy, bullied eight-year-old boy living with his overbearing yet emotionally distant parents, Carol (played by: Lizzy Caplan from Cloverfield, Castle Rock, The Night Before, and Hot Tub Time Machine) and Mark (played by: Antony Starr from The Boys, The Covenent, American Gothic, and Banshee). He earns sympathy from his substitute teacher Ms. Devine (played by: Cleopatra Coleman from Infinity Pool, Fear Clinic, and Dopesick). Despite having plans to go trick-or-treating on Halloween night, his parents forbid him due to the disappearance of a young girl several years ago.

Later that night, Peter is woken to the sound of tapping outside his bedroom window. His parents deny these occurrences, insisting that he is imagining them. Over the next few days, Peter talks with a voice named Sarah (played by: stunt woman Aleksandra Dragova from Memory, Expend4bles, and The Offering). She claims that she was trapped in the walls by Peter's parents and calls them "evil". Ms. Devine becomes concerned after seeing a picture Peter draws of Sarah, and Carol admonishes Peter for bringing his delusions to his teacher. At school, Brian (played by: Luke Busey from Bunk'd) is a bully that destroys Peter's prize pumpkin. Spurred by Sarah's advice, Peter pushes Brian down the stairs which breaks his leg. After learning he has been expelled, Peter's parents lock him in the basement, where he discovers a pit covered with a grate. Ms. Devine becomes even more worried about the young boy. Something isn't right at Peter's house, tension builds up and strange things keep happening. Someone is lying about the past but the mystery remains who. Is he just delusional? Or Is he trapped in his own personal hell with his messed up family????

Cobweb might be the biggest surprise of the year for me. I wasn't really expecting much with this one but it ended up blowing me away. This is my current favorite and highest rated horror film for the year. It's crazy Cobweb got buried in theaters and removed from it so quickly during it's release. I actually tried seeing it but it vanished before I could check it out originally. This one kinda had a People Under the Stairs vibe to me especially the parent characters. Both Lizzy Caplan and Anthony Starr killed it here. This might be both of their best performances in their careers and that's saying a lot. It has solid performances by Woody Norman and Cleopatra Coleman here. The Sarah character is very creepy in Cobweb.

This had an impressive script that was loaded with suspense, twists, and thrills. Cobweb delivers a great build up to a satisfying finale. It has excellent production design, cinematography, music, and the special fx are on point here. I really hope this horror feature gets more attention on home video because it's one of the best in the sub-genre in a long time. It's flew under the radar and I feel like most people don't even know about it. This is definitely making my top 10 for the year. Add this movie to your collection, it should be included in every horror marathon for the month of October. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

The Mean One (2022)
5/10
So much potential here!!!!
13 February 2024
The Mean One is a 2022 Christmas slasher film produced and directed by Steven LaMorte (Bury Me Twice, Never Leave Alive, Trials of Ember, and One Step Away). It was written by Flip (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King 2, and Pocahontas 2) and Finn Kobler (All Hallows Eve 2, Trophy Wife, M Is For Masochist, and Food For Thought). The film is a horror adaptation of Dr. Seuss' 1957 children's book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! It grossed $612,260 in theaters during it's limited theatrical run. In 2000, in the sleepy mountain town of Newville, young Cindy You-Know-Who (played by: Saphina Chanadet from Veep) witnessed her mother (played by: Tina Van Berk) murdered by the Mean One (played by: David Howard Thornton from Terrifier, Terrifier 2, The Dark Offerings, Gotham, and Bupkis), a bloodthirsty green-skinned creature dressed in a red Santa suit.

Twenty years later, Cindy (played by: Krystle Martin from It's in the Streets, They live in the Grey, and 911: Lone Star) and her father Lou (played by: writer Flip Kobler from Silent and Forgotten, Bury Me Twice, and American Drive-In) return to the town at the suggestion of Cindy's therapist Doc Zeus (played by: John Bigham from Welcome to the Horror Show). When the brutal monster soon begins to terrorize the town and threatens to ruin the holidays, Cindy finds a new purpose in stopping and killing this Grinch. She has a mayor (played by: Amy Schumacher from Strange Events 1 and 2) trying to cover up everything at any cost plus two questionable sheriffs (played by: Erik Baker from The Verge and Chase Mullins from Driven) in her way. Can she finally put this nightmare to an end? Or Will it forever curse her life with pain and suffering????

The Mean One definitely grabbed my attention when it was first announced. You have a slasher version of the iconic Grinch and it's being played by David Howard Thornton who's mainly known as Art the Clown from the Terrifier franchise. You really have to go into The Mean One with an open mind. It's a very very very low budget production which is pretty damn obvious during it's running time. Sometimes, independent features can look more expensive than it's actual budget depending on the skill level in it's departments but that's not the case here. Everything felt kinda rushed here to be honest. I thought stunt woman Krystle Martin was a decent lead in this but she didn't have much help when it came to the supporting cast. I noticed a few of them were writers or a producer for the project which explains a lot. David Howard Thornton as The Grinch / The Mean One is the highlight when it comes to this holiday themed slasher. He's great under fx and creative costumes when it comes to these types of horror movies. It actually has some decent gore and kills in The Mean One. This one kinda reminds me of those late 90's direct to video flicks. I think if this was released around then, it would have been more appreciated and it definitely would have had a solid cult following. These days, it just kinda blends in with everything out there.

Studios are being creative these days using iconic children characters in horror films like Winnie the Pooh, The Grinch, Mary had a little Lamb, and The Banana Splits. I think if The Mean One had a slightly bigger budget and a better cast, it could have been one of the best horror flicks of the year but it fell short when it came to that. I still think it's a pretty unique spin on the classic character and it's something I never expected to be made. If you can get past the bad acting and it's cheap atmosphere then you will probably enjoy it for David Howard Thornton and it's gory scenes. It has some replay value to it especially when it comes to Christmas horror. I think it at least deserves to be watched once just to experience it. Personally, I'm glad it's in my collection.

Slotherhouse (2023)
6/10
Unique slasher!!!!
13 February 2024
Slotherhouse is a 2023 horror film comedy edited and directed by Matthew Goodhue (Woe, Dames, Virgil, and Breakfast for Dinner). It was produced and written by Bradley Fowler (Novel Love, Voices, Good Girl, Crib, and Love Meet Hope). It had a limited theatrical run. Emily Young (played by: Lisa Ambalavanar from Titans, The Stuff of Legend, The A List, and Doctors) adopts a pet three-toed sloth named Alpha with the goal of using it to gain votes to become head of the Sigma Lambda Theta (SLTH).

The sorority which includes: Brianna (played by: Sydney Craven from Jeepers Creepers: Reborn), Zenny (played by: Bianca Beckles-Rose from Watch What I Do), Madison (played by: Olivia Rouyre from American Horror Stories), Sarah (played by: Sutter Nolan from Deer In The Headlight), Gabby (played by: Milica Vrzic from The Outpost), Dakota (played by: Annamaria Serda from Mayhem and Crawl), Chloe (played by: Grace Patterson from Cheer For Your Life), Ava (played by: Kelly Lynn Reiter from The Hunger Games and Maneater), Alissa (played by: Tiana Upcheva from The Ark and The Outpost), and Morgan (played by: Cady Lanigan from Gutshot Straight). The pet is loved by all until it begins to kill the sorority girls one by one. The girls must survive and escape the sloth alive from it's murderous ways!!!!!

Slotherhouse is a wild and somewhat original concept so it grabbed my attention right away. For being a PG-13 horror feature, this was better than I thought it would be. Obviously, Slotherhouse isn't loaded with gore or violence but it does have it's moments for it's rating. It's heavy on the comedy which works great with it's plot and main villain. I would have never thought someone would have made a killer sloth movie but here we are. They knew what they were doing when they put together this horror comedy, it has a parody vibe to it which compliments it's dark humor. Everything is over the top here like the killer, characters, and the fx. Slotherhouse never takes itself that serious and it just tries to entertain the whole time. It has a solid cast especially Lisa Ambalavanar and Sydney Craven. It definitely has some strong replay value and it's perfect to watch with some friends for some drinking games fun. It won't be your favorite of the year but it will make an impression after it's original viewing!!!!

One of Jack Black's best!
13 February 2024
School of Rock is a 2003 comedy film directed by Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Slacker, A Scanner Darkly, Boyhood, and Bad News Bears). It was written by Mike White (Dead Man on Campus, Orange County, Nacho Libre, The White Lotus, Enlightened, and The Good Girl). It was produced by Scott Rudin (First Cow, No Country for Old Men, The Social Network, Lady Bird, The Truman Show, Uncut Gems, Mid90s, and Annihilation). The budget was $35 million and it grossed $131.3 million worldwide at the box office!!!!

Struggling rock guitarist Dewey Finn (played by: Jack Black from King Kong, Shallow Hal, High Fidelity, The Super Mario Bros Movie, and Jumanji franchise), who is fired from his band No Vacancy and subsequently poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school under his best friend's name Ned Schneebly (played by: writer Mike White from The D Train, Brad's Status, and Zombieland) . He is always catching hell from Patty Di Marco (played by: Sarah Silverman from Battle of the Sexes, Saving Silverman, Gravy, and Popstar) and he starts to bond with principal Rosalie Mullins (played by: Joan Cusack from In and Out, Grosse Point Blank, Toy Story franchise, and Shameless). After witnessing the musical talent of the students, Dewey forms a band of fourth-graders to attempt to win the upcoming Battle of the Bands and use his winnings to pay his rent. As time goes on, he actually respects his students and he makes all of their lives better with his influence. His scam turns into a real passion. Is it too late to be honest????

School of Rock is Jack Black's greatest performance and role of his successful career. Honestly, he's very hit or miss when it comes to acting but he knocked it out of the park here. He turns an unlikable character into someone that inspires a group of misfit to see their potential. School of Rock has a fantastic script that's hilarious and full of heart. It's a charming underdog story. Director Richard Linklater always provides an excellent soundtrack when it comes to his work and this one is no different. I love the personal touch he adds to all of his films. He's always passionate about each project no matter how different it is. School of Rock has a solid supporting cast that includes Sarah Silverman, Joan Cusack, Mike White, and Nicky Katt. Plus all of the kids are so much fun and entertaining here. This comedy gets better and better on each revisit. The replay value is very strong for this one. Paramount delivers another awesome back catalog home video release, RECOMMENDED!!!!

Independent horror anthology!!!!
11 February 2024
The Perfect House is a 2013 horror anthology film directed by Kris Hulbert (First Timers) & Randy Kent (Ten Cent Hitman, Life, Death and Mini-Golf, Life of Lemon, & Shadow of the Monarch). Newlyweds, Mike (played by: William A. Robertson from The Rising & Black Marigolds) & Marisol (played by: Andrea Vahl from First Timers & Criminal Intention) take a tour of their dream house. The frisky Real Estate Agent (played by: Monique Parent from Vicious Kiss, Mirror, Mirror III, James Dean: Race with Destiny, & Jurassic City) is willing to do anything to sell this house. They find out that their perfect house has a brutal & unsettling past.

The history of this house of horrors is revealed during three different generations of cursed families that suffered through this hell in this unlucky environment. "The Storm" is the story of a dysfunctional family (Kris Smith from Lady Krampus & My Friend Dahmer, Timothy Dugan from FrightWorld & Prisoners of the Dead, Michael Wagner, & Alex Victoria) trying to survive deadly weather outside in their basement for shelter. Unfortunately, the storm is the least of this families worries when it comes to destruction. Hidden secrets & verbal abuse haunt this unit. Sometimes kids can only take so much from their parents.

"Chic-Ken" is a tale of the unknown serial killer & real life monster John Doesy (played by: Jonathan Tiersten from Sleepaway Camp, Return to Sleepaway Camp, Blood Reservoir, & Terror Tales). He can't control his crazy urges as his body count starts to grow. The evil that exists but no one recognizes him for what he really is. One victim (played by: Holly Greene from The Cutting Room) is lasting longer than the others. She's his "muse" & only audience to his unforgettable acts. Can she escape this madness or is she starting to enjoy it too much?

"Dinner Guests" is the final demented warning of this bad location. Mom (played by: Felissa Rose from Sleepaway Camp, Return to Sleepaway Camp, Victor Crowely, Death House, Silent Night, Zombie Night, & Dahmer vs. Gacy) & Dad (played by: John Philbin from The Return of the Living Dead, Children of the Corn, Point Break, & Tombstone) with their kids just made the wrong choice. Never trust a neighbor, always return their garden tools, & eat at home. Sometimes that normal looking guy (played by: Dustin Stevens from R. S. V. P., Keepers of the Light, & Pastor Damien) next door isn't exactly all there. A routine situation such as a meal can turn into a living nightmare. What happens when that mask of sanity slips off & it can end up dangerous when real dark desires are shown behind closed doors.

I am a big fan of horror anthologies & The Perfect House didn't disappoint. The anthology film is a great opportunity to mix sub genres into one production. You get a little bit of everything in this including survival, torture, revenge & the evil house that changes everyone in it's environment. I appreciated that each segment had a different dark angle to provide for it's overall presentation. "Chic-Ken" & "Dinner Guests" were tied for my favorites from this movie. It was good to see a mini reunion for Sleepaway Camp & Return to Sleepaway Camp co-stars despite being in separate stories. Both Felissa Rose & Jonathan Tiersten gave their best performances in The Perfect House. This is a very mean spirited movie, it's full of unlikable characters that you don't care what happens to them. Which is good considering how gruesome & insane this is. Fans of hardcore gore & nasty special effects will be very pleased by The Perfect House!!!!

Exploitation on a small budget!!!!
11 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
All Hell Breaks Loose is a 2014 horror film directed by special effects artist Jeremy Garner (Melvin, Crowbar, Killing Me, The Children of Terra Firma, & Deet 'n Bax Save Th World). A. H. B. L mixes some of the usual favorite sub genres for exploitation cinema including bikers, revenge, & satanism. It was shot in Oregon on a budget of 20,000 in 3 weeks. It even has that familiar "grindhouse" look to it. A throwback to all of those independents that pushed the boundaries that played in certain theaters & drive in spots across America back in the day. It opens up with a vicious preview of what's to come later on in this disastrous adventure.

Friends are enjoying their party & time together as they tell silly campfire stories getting messed up. Bikers (Sundown played by: Joshua Frazier from Most Daring, Knucklehead played by: Big Dave Levick, Ratso played by: Casey Vann from Grimm, & Pedophile Pete played by: Tommy Hestmark from Vicious) show up & they go on a murderous spree as they slaughter most of them, they are on a mission. They are only looking for one thing there, a VIRGIN!

That same group of diabolical bikers from hell known as Satan's Sinners (Chuck played by: Ryan Gregg from Lucky's Treasure, Statch played by: Todd Robinson from Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, El Vez played by: Hunter O'Guinn from The Silence, & Clarence played by: Jackass's "Danger" Ehren McGhehey from Portlandia) have expanded since then decide to crash a newlyweds Nick (played by: Nick Forrest from Lucky's Treasure) & Bobby Sue (played by: Sarah Kobel Marquette from Crowbar) wedding celebration after being married all alone. Satan's Sinners murder the nerdy Nick & kidnap Bobby Sue to sacrifice her to Satan to save them from damnation. A mysterious cowboy (played by: Joseph Sullivan from The Darkest Corner of Paradise & The Children of Terra Firma) claiming to be God brings Nick back to life to save his new bride from the unholy motorcycle gang. Nick goes to Sheriff Parks (played by: William Ross) & a questionable preacher Jeremiah (played by: Leif Fuller from Melvin) for help. The once deceased groom is now armed with divine intervention & dangerous firepower. He will keep dying over & over until he becomes the hero in this battle against evil!

I don't know why but motorcycle gangs, Satan, & revenge make a great combination when it comes to pure entertainment. All Hell Breaks Loose is executed so good that it honestly feels like a lost exploitation film from the 1970s. It's something I could see Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez producing. I have noticed a decent amount of independent horror starting to bring back grindhouse & that exploitation flavor to modern day cinema. It delivers everything you would want for this sub genre hybrid plus it has a nice balance of comedy added in. It makes up for it's low budget with it's main cast, soundtrack, & many gruesome visuals.

I am not surprised by that last part since it was directed by a special effects artist. These days more of them are taking a chance & getting behind the camera for their own projects. All Hell Breaks Loose is non stop fun & it has you rooting for the ambitious geek against the wicked Satan's Sinners. This one is a under-rated gem & needs more exposure to the world. Hopefully, I can help out a little with this review. If you enjoy stuff that plays homage to past & makes their picture quality resemble the favorites from before you will get kick out of this. It adds to the personality of this production & it gives it that familiar feeling that you have grown to love when it comes this type of genre production. The soundtrack also adds to the environment & energy of this feature. It's almost like another character in this.

Thorn (2014)
5/10
Fun low budget slasher!!!!
11 February 2024
Thorn (aKa The Legacy of Thorn) is a 2016 slasher film written, produced, composed, edited, shot, & directed by the one man army known as Mj Dixon (Creepsville, Slasher House 1/2, Cleaver: Rise of the Killer Clown, & Hollower). It's based off the 2009 horror short under the same name. It opens up with Jessica Lawrence (played by: Jade Wallis from I'm Still Here, Beneath a Neon Tide, & Blaze of Gory) counting down the days until the anniversary of the night that changed everything. It shows her trapping her long awaited enemy with some help from Eric (played by: Paris Rivers from Grindsploitation & Slasher House 2), Clark (played by: Craig Canning from Dead Walkers: Rise of the 4th Reich & The Guvnors), & Alice (played by: Jane Haslehurst from Zombie Armageddon: The Ultimate Collection & Inside Fear). Four years ago, the very popular high school student Jessica thinks she's on top of the world with her life. Nothing can wrong with her current luck. She's celebrating her sweet sixteen with all her friends from school.

A local urban legend known as Thorn (played by: Richard Daniel Thomas Holloran from Slasher House) decides to crash her party & ruin her perfect little existence in one night. Her birthday will never be the same! Cherished memories quickly into a unforgettable massacre. The monster shows up every four years to sacrifice his prey & it's time for Jessica to relive her past nightmare with her new friends by association to stop Thorn from killing again on his usual murderous tradition. Thorn wants to repeat his destruction that will leave no survivors this time. Can they break the curse & save everyone from their gruesome death?

Mj Dixon basically did everything for this movie & that's very impressive! Sometimes when someone has that much responsibility & it shows but not here. He gave every aspect of this production the same amount of quality. Is this the new horror icon when it comes to British slashers? It's possible, it definitely delivers all the goods when comes to expectations to the beloved sub genre. High body count? CHECK! So many people got slaughtered in this that I lost count which is awesome. Lots of gore? CHECK! This movie is loaded with blood & it features some devastating kills. Cool looking killer? CHECK!

Thorn is kinda resembles what you would expect ChromeSkull's cousin to look like. He has a similar look to that horror character. Final girl? CHECK! Jade Wallis was solid in this plus she had an amazing ass which the director makes sure you see it multiple times in this. Good backstory? CHECK! Director Mj Dixon who also was the cinematographer for this almost made it feel like two different movies with his stylish approach. Both stories had it's own vibe & really stood out from each other. The only thing it really lacks is nudity when it comes to the usual favorites for slashers, it has a few nice moments but nothing crazy but it makes up for it in all those other departments! I've reviewed a decent amount of flicks from Wild Eye Releasing & this is probably the funniest one so far. It kept my attention & I was entertained ready for more when it ended. Speaking of that, make sure you watch after the credits because it has a few bonus scenes at the end. These days it's very rare to find a quality slasher but Thorn definitely provided that. Like I said before, Thorn has a very stylish look to it so it almost feels like two different movies when watching it. It gives both stories it's own unique vision. The hard rock soundtrack really added to the atmosphere!

Cruel Summer (2016)
5/10
It was decent....
11 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Cruel Summer is a 2016 horror film directed by Phillip Escott & Craig Newman. It's based off a true event from Sheffield in 2004 plus inspired by a few other situations from other crimes a few years before. It was finished on a 10 day shoot financed on their own. It opens up with a little preview of the chaos that's about to come later on. Danny (played by: Richard Pawulski from All in the Valley) is a teenager with autism, his escape from reality is the amazing countryside where he likes to camp. He goes in alone to separate himself from everything. It's his favorite distraction from his every day problems. Julia (played by: Natalie Martins from Poltergeist Activity, Kill or be Killed, & The Barge People) makes a outrageous claim against the troubled teen to the wrong person.

This rage motivates a plan of revenge. Lead by Nicholas (played by: Danny Miller from Grange Hill, Emmerdale, & Lightfields) with their other friend Calvin (played by: Reece Douglas from The Knife That Killed Me, Waterloo Road, & Think Again), these 3 are not going to stop anything from righting this wrong committed by Danny last summer but will the other 2 get all the facts before they go too far? Nicholas tells his friends that Danny is a pedophile & only gets away with it because of his disease. The insecure & jaded Nicholas can't stand the fact he thinks Danny had his ex girlfriend Lisa before him when he thought she was a virgin. Julia has created a path of destruction & torture based off her false claims on the innocent Danny. They trick Danny's mom like they are his friends to get information on where to find her son. Calvin & Julia both question this retaliation as Nicholas starts to go way too far on this brutal mission. Lies become a reality to the easily manipulated & their actions can be forgotten. Only the truth can end this sadistic treatment!

Cruel Summer is much more than a social commentary on bullying & how people are treated. When you watch something based off a true story like this it haunts your mind & sticks with you for awhile. It goes further than entertainment & something to just waste time on. Nicholas is one of the most unlikable characters you'll ever see on screen & the fact that he was real makes it much worse. He's the ultimate bully, when I say that I just don't mean for the helpless Danny. He pushes both of his friends to their terrifying limits with no remorse. He brought out something they didn't know they had inside of them. Every time they showed hesitation he made sure that it went away with his aggressive peer pressure. Cruel Summer is honestly hard to watch because Danny doesn't have a hurtful bone in his entire body. He can't defend himself & he doesn't realize what's going on until it's too late. This tragedy could have been stopped with the simple truth but everyone let this brutal event get to the point of no return. It captured the pain, the confliction, & the aftermath when people go too far. Everything from the look, the cast, & the overall production made you forget it was a low budget movie. The isolated setting was like another character in this. This is a great example of where quality over quantity is used right.

Low budget TCM clone!!!!
11 February 2024
Cannibal Farm (aKa Escape from Cannibal Farm) is a 2017 British horror film written, edited, produced, & directed by Charlie Steeds (Deadman Apocalypse, The House of Violent Desire, & Winterskin). It opens with a flashback when Sammy Hansen was bullied by the two Blackheart boys who took their prank too far. In a freak accident Sammy's face was burnt & disfigured for the rest of his life wrapped in bandages.

It causes a tragic chain of events that haunts their family forever. Now it goes to present day with the Harver family which includes Jessica (played by: Kate Davies-Speak from Apparition of Evil, The Antwerp Dolls, Deadman Apocalypse, & Knights of the Damned), Toby (played by: David Lenik from Deadman Apocalypse, Winterskin, & The Barge People), Katherine (played by: Rowena Bentley from Eat the Rich, The House of Violent Desire, & Winterskin), Sam (played by: Dylan Curtis from Deadman Apocalypse & Winterskin) plus Wesley Wallace (played by: Toby Wynn-Davies from Waste & Dogged), & Kurtis Daniels (played by: Joe Street from The House of Violent Desire & On the River) decide to take a summer camping trip together. They are trying to resolve current & past problems with some bonding on a new adventure. They are hoping a different environment & some fresh air will help ease all the tension between this once close unit.

They meet a stranger trying to sell cider on the road. They start getting settled in until their camp is ransacked by a unknown threat at night. Kathy ends up hurt from the incident. They go to a nearby old farm looking for any help from this bad situation. They picked the wrong strangers to ask for assistance because farmer Hunt Hansen (played by: Barrington De La Roche from Savage Hearts, Blood Moon, & London Fields), the same weirdo from before & his deformed son Sammy (played by: Jack Miller from Deadman Apocalypse) are the last two people that you want to run into with no where to go. They soon find out the horrifying secrets & unspeakable acts that take place at this creepy farm. The Hansens enjoy a different kind of food & the Harvers are starting to look like their next meal as they are ready to feast on some human flesh plus find a new face for Sammy. It's a fight for survival which requires The Harvers to finally come together as a family & work together if they want to escape alive.

Cannibal Farm is clearly a homage to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It has the same basic formula like the bickering group of family & friends on a road trip. They get lost & end up at the wrong place at the wrong time. The demented cannibalistic family with a disfigured son that always needs a new face. Honestly, it's probably better than a few of those sequels. After saying that, I will be the first one to admit that's what originally got my attention when it came to this film. Luckily, it has much more than that when it comes to the 2nd half of the story to separate itself a little from the shadows of the classic & the iconic Leatherface. It's filled with twists & turns to the point where you never know what's going to happen next. It keeps you on your toes with suspense until the very end! Also, it delivers all the gore & gross out moments that you would hope for when it comes to something like this. I am renaming this, from now it's going to be called the British Chainsaw Massacre! It's a shame more films like this are not being pushed harder in the public compared to the watered down tame cliche material with a few cheap scares. That's exactly why I prefer independent film when it comes to horror. They go past their boundaries & don't sacrifice their entire movie for a wider audience.
