Incorrect casting
18 July 2023
I've always liked Teese Witherspoon and I've tried to overlook her little run in with the law but as I was watching this I just couldn't get past Laura Dern being her mother. They're literally not even 10y apart.

I got to thinking that the only way this is going to make sense is if Reese cast herself in the role. Of which she is a producer so I'm thinking she did.

There are so many young 20-30 something actresses out there. I think Reese is living in the past a little bit.

I can only hope that, since this move was made almost 10y ago, Reese has made her peace with being almost 50 and can ease into those mother roles with Grace like Laura Dern has.

I forgot how bad this movie was
25 April 2022
I had a rainy movie day yesterday and rewatched some old movies and I forgot how bad this movie was. I'm surprised it was nominated for any awards at all. Kathleen turner is ok but Nicolas Cages character was so cringy and unbelievable. His voice is so shrill. His hair is a mess. Sophia Coppola has this weird air about her when she acts that's so awkward to watch. She doesn't even look like the rest of the family. It was nice to see young Helen Hunt but even though they mention a son, Scott, we never see him. And the end scene where you can see Charlies underwear though his pants is just awful.

I guess I should have watched this one before Fried Green Tomatos which is obviously the better movie.

Friends: The One with Phoebe's Rats (2003)
Season 9, Episode 12

1/3 decent
23 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I love Friends. I've watched it fairly religiously over and over since about 2006 and I consider myself an expert on it. This episode makes me sad because out of all of Rachel's love interests Gavin is my favorite. Dermot Mulroney is freakin gorgeous and the chemistry he has annoying Rachel is well... kind a hot. I wish they had given him a bigger role in this. Unfortunately the Storyline of Phoebe and the rats is past it's placement to me. I feel like it would have worked with a younger Phoebe but having an older more mature Phoebe act this way over rats is annoying and unbelievable. Also Joey acting manic over Molly the hot nanny doesn't sit right either. And it annoys me that she "takes the baby home" because their all at Rachel's party, Joey follows her then Chandler and Ross follow Joey, they all end up at Ross's apt and then Molly just leaves effectively eliminating one of them (probably Ross) from going back to Rachel's party. She must have called Tabitha right when she got to the apt.... Just a weird unbelievable storyline blip.

I don't know if I can watch the rest
1 February 2021
I think there's a reason I never watched this movie. It's so bad. Mia should have grown out of her clumsy strange but then there would be no story filler. It's so dumb it hurts. Disappointed in Shonda Rimes for writing stanky stuff.

I'm Moving to England
3 September 2020
I am a reality show geek. I have obsessively watched Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, Pawn Stars, American Idol, Storage Wars, Skin Wars and Cupcake wars. I especially like the ones with eliminations at the end.

What I like the most about this show, that is different from the other ones, is that they don't waste time building suspense announcing winners and losers. I also love that they leave the slightly naughty things in. It also seems to me that the contestants care about each other.

I'm not gonna lie America is a bit of a mess. It feels like everyone hates each other here. I love my country but I would be totally OK with leaving. Especially if I could find friends like Prue or a guy that looks like Paul Hollywood to sit in the garden and drink tea and biscuits? Hell yeah!

I love Phoebe Cates but....
4 April 2020
She ruined this movie.

I have always been intrigued buy the story. What a WONDERFUL story and I wish they would remake it.

I loved her in FT@RH, Gremlins, DDF..... she was wonderful in those but this character was way too deep for her. Way too wounded for a whole soul. She's seemed angry, just angry. I needed her to be hurt more. Even the end had no emotional closure.

Its not meant for adults
15 August 2008
In this installation of the Lucas legacy (which is to be the kick off of a 100 episode television cartoon show) Anakin Skywalker gets a female padawan, Ashoka Tano. She is willful, sarcastic and disrespectful which doesn't seem to flow with what we have been taught about how Jedi's in training should act. She is, however, except for one thing (mentioned later), quite likable and skillful. It does make sense however that Anakin would get a difficult padawan considering he was also a difficult padawan. She is chosen for him by Obi Wan.

Anakin and Ashoka are on a mission to rescue Jabba the Hut's son who turns out to be a quite cute baby hutlet. Most of the film follows Anakin, Ashoka, R2D2 and the hutlet. Yoda shows up a few times with Mace Windu as does Padme towards the end who lends a hand in saving the day. Some other old favorites who show up are Chancellor Palpatine , Darth Sideous, Count Dooku and C3PO.

Overall the story flows very well. It is interesting enough to keep adults engaged but not so detailed the kids are looking at you going "what?".

The effects were....well....effective. One of my pet peeves with cartoons these days is the editing is so fast I cant understand what is going on and it ends up giving me a headache. The editing in this film was spot on, very engaging but not so fast you got lost in the hustle and bustle of it all.

Anakin, Obi Wan and even Ashoka are all rockin in their Jedi skills!

The worker droids are very funny in this and provide the humor in it all.

There is quite a bit of violence but most of the casualties are non human. No blood or guts just sparks and droid pieces. There is one scene where the decapitated heads of non human characters are presented. Padme is pushed around a little but not hurt. There is a new evil female character called Ventress who fares to be quite scary and may scare smaller children. She wears a low cut blouse or halter in some of the scenes.

The extent of profanity in the movie is one "damn". Other than that the worst is "scum" which is uttered a few times and they call the hutlet "stinky". Twice you hear Anakin say "I hate the huts".

There is a female alien who dances in front of Jabba. She is dressed in what seems to be either skin with no details or a full body suit. I think she is there for his enjoyment but didn't seem sexual.

There are two things that bothered me the most. Ashoka is very pretty and likable. (I personally am glad to finally see a female Jedi) but is dressed in a tank top (no straps, belly showing) and mini skirt. Her skin is orange so it doesn't come off sexual but is still disturbing and not necessary to me (I have two young boys). She wears white tights, red knee high boots, black and white striped hair and bears an uncanny resemblance to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The other is Jabba the Hut's "uncle" Zero. Many times they refer to him as "uncle" but he is purple, talks like a woman (a southern woman), wears what looks like feathers on his head and has his entire body tattooed. Both of my boys looked at me with confusion when he showed up looking like a cross between Nathan Lane in The Birdcage and Ouiser (Shirley McLaine) in Steel Magnolias.

Overall I loved this movie and will be buying it when it comes out. My children will be sure to enjoy it over and over as they memorize the lines and continue on in their own Jedi skills.

Tropic Thunder
13 August 2008
Well I just got back from a sneak preview (benefits of managing a movie theater). I was not impressed.

It starts off vulgar and stays that way throughout. Vulgarity has its place in films but on this one it felt like it was going a tad overboard. I think my husband laughed out loud once or twice and he is very easily amused so that says a lot.

I was bored, my 20 year old son was bored and we both said "I thought it was going to be better than that." Ahhh another case of good trailer/not so good movie.

Robert Downey Jr was great. I loved seeing him play a black man. He did mumble a lot though and many times was just plain incoherent.

Jack Black is quite funny as a drug addicted fattie.

Tom Cruise could have been so much more awesome if he had disguised his voice but he didn't so it was just Tom Cruise in a fat suit. That fell flat. His dancing was kinda cute though.

The best thing about Ben Stiller was his arms. Even next to Robert Downey Jr who is probably the hottest guy in movies I was still admiring Stillers arms. Other than that it was just Ben Stiller in a movie. Same ol Same ol.

The best part was this kid that is like the leader of the Viet Cong. He is a total badA22 and a pretty good actor for a kid. I enjoyed him. He was actually kinda scary. lol

Conclusion: Not for kids. (I let my kids watch some R movies but not this one, just an extra warning for parents). There is a lot of cussing and a few homosexual references including a very detailed description of a bj. 20-30 something guys will love it. Your girlfriends may be bored. I wouldn't shell out over 5 dollars to see it. Wait for it on video.

Conservative Moms with Kids....
19 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Well... boys....

Just got back from seeing it with my 19 year old, 9 year old and 6 year old boys. My 6 year old is my thermometer for movies. If he sits still its a safe bet... if not.... don't pay money to abuse the people around you.

Last week we went to see Spiderman 3. He never said a word except at the end when "someone" was hurt (don't want to spoil S3 for anyone) he said.... "Mommy I don't ever want to watch Spiderman movies again" then after a short pause he added. "But I do want to get all the Spiderman toys"

I don't think hes ever asked for Shrek toys.

I think that again, in the Shrek movies, there is just too much adult humor, the kids get lost and in this one there just wasn't enough adult or kid humor to keep it afloat. The biggest laugh was when Shrek said POOP at the beginning of the movie.

Don't pay money to see this. Take them to see Spiderman 3 instead and buy this for Christmas.

Concerns for this conservative parent: The woman with a mans voice (confusing for kids) bra burning?? Snow White looks really evil a few times but is supposedly a good guy Donkey looking at Shreks privates

Thank you for reading my review.

King Kong (2005)

Not a Masterpiece
16 December 2005
I honestly thought of this title while I was watching this movie tonight. It has nothing to do with the comment posted before mine.

I went to see this tonight with my husband and son. I was beside myself with excitement about seeing this movie. It was disappointing.

My 8 year old loved it and did not seem bothered by its 3+ hours. My husband who usually gets into anything action packed was even going "Ho-Hum" in a few spots.

The beginner movie fan may love it. If you like action and special effects you may love it. If you are looking for a Lord Of The Rings quality movie or Oscar worthy movie you may hate it.

There are many special effect scenes that are not so special. The scale of Naomi Watts to Kong was really getting on my nerves. In one scene she is about 1/50th his size coming up to his shoulder while he is sitting and in other scenes she is about 1/100 of his size barely fitting in his hand. The Brontosaurus scenes were very, very fake looking.

The story was very disheartening. It starts off with a man setting off to make a picture and half way through it turns into a Mighty Joe Young meets Jurassic Park three way love story. The story line following the movie he is shooting is without good closure. There is a nice romance brewing between Adrian Brody and Naomi Watts that is also without closure.

You don't even get to see Kong until about and hour and thirty minutes into the movie.

There are many times you wish Naomi Watts would talk more to Kong but they seem to only look at each other with a lot of emotion. Does she love him like I love my dog or is she in love with him? Overall it is OK. I recommend seeing at the dollar theater. Don't wait for it to come out on DVD.... the action will be much better in a theater. Especially the bugs!

Not worth the money
28 May 2005
We just got back from seeing this movie. We = Me, my 7 year old son and my 4 year old son. We used rain checks we had and bought one child ticket for 5 dollars. I am still not quite over the frustration of losing money to this movie.

The first 20-30 minutes of it are just plain stupid. A lion and a zebra (who are best friends go figure) live next to each other in a zoo with a barrier between them my 4 year old could jump over. Their neighbors are a hippo and a giraffe (who by the way is the funniest character). The Zebra wants to go explore thus creating the journey of the picture.

The dialog is slow... the plot is weak.... and the comedy is mostly physical comedy on the giraffes part and a little attitude from Gloria/Jada the Hippo whom I often wondered why she was there at all. Absolutely NO character development for her.

My children were bored and looking around before they even left the zoo. My son begged to get a drink of water... My 4 year old was falling asleep on my lap...kids were playing... walking around... talking. We went to a Saturday matinée so there were tons of kids and moms. Bored kids and moms.

My recommendation: Do not waste your money on this at the theater. Do not waste it on the video. Wait till next spring and you will be able to find it at a garage sale for $1.00.

Don't be afraid
14 April 2005
I avoided watching this movie for years because of the content. I was thinking "I can not relate with the subject matter or people" .... turn of the century Russia.

I bought it for a dollar at a garage sale and found it quite tolerable and then some. The characters are much more lively then I had judged them to be by looking at the pictures and the dialog is quite humorous at times.

Topal made the movie as the sweet yet stubborn father and husband and if you like music I guarantee you will be humming "If I were a rich man" a day later! And a very nice addition was Paul Michael Glaser the original Starskey from Starskey and Hutch!

Enjoy!

Definitely NOT her best
25 March 2005
I love Sandra Bullock and I love Regina King but I did not like this movie.

Sandra did great and Regina did great. I especially loved William Shatner, he's so funny as an idiot. I also enjoyed Diedrich Bader as Joel but... the movie as a whole was too much cliché.

There were questionable areas Ex: man sees his GF kissing his boss and does nothing?????? Plus there is a part where Sandra and Regina take turns bending each others wrists when they are fighting but yet still have a free hand. If it hurts that bad attack with the free hand. Stuff like that.

It also had those things where you look at the person next to you and go "Now how in the heck did she know the bad guys were gonna be here at this time?" It just didn't flow.

Dolly Parton makes a cameo and that was cool cause I've always liked her.

I went cause I like Sandra (plus shes a Texan) but overall it was a pretty bad movie. (I missed Benjamin Bratt too) I gave it a 4.

Man of the House (I) (2005)
6/10
I liked it
26 February 2005
I am very well known for scoffing at my husband for taking me to see movies that are not "Oscar Worthy". I have learned not to go to the movies with my teenagers because most of their choices, in my opinion, are dull and poorly made. Thus they didn't like that I drug them to "Mystic River" last year. They didn't understand why I like it.

Although "Man of the House" was not a well made movie and did contain a lot of clichés' I enjoyed it. The lines were quite funny and Tommy Lee Jones being the wonderful actor he is pulled off the "hard nosed guy with a soft side" very well. The interaction between him and the girls was believable and the girls all had their own distinct personalities.... the Latin hot head, the studious good girl, the dumb blonde, the beautiful ex-bad girl hick and the level headed but stubborn leader.

I might have enjoyed it because it has a touch of GIRL POWER in it.... (kinda like Thelma and Louise). I might have liked it because I love Tommy Lee Jones, and I might have liked it because I am an ex-cheerleader and currently a cheer coach (which would ACTUALLY be a reason NOT to like it because the cheerleading in it was for SHOW ONLY. Not a realistic portrayal of our sport by any means). None the less I tend to be hard nose where movie making is concerned and I liked it.

Its a safe bet as a rental. Watch your teenage sons.... there are A lot of half dressed girls (think "Coyote Ugly" but worse).

If you are looking for a "Bring it On" type movie... THIS IS NOT IT. This is more along the lines of "Sugar and Spice".

Staying Alive (1983)

What I think some people forget...
19 September 2004
What I think some people forget when they are watching movies is the time the movie was made. This is an 80's movie... if you don't understand the 80's you might not like the movie. Finola Hughes was a much more popular actress in the 80's because of her role on a soap opera although Cynthia is definitely the better dancer. I saw this is the 80's and I still love it for transporting me back there. Thats like the coolest thing about movies!

I get so upset when I hear people criticize movies calling them "crap" and "horrible". Some of them are mind you but ... what you think is crap will bring Joy to so many others... and that in inself ...how can it be horrible if it makes someone happy?

People post on here like they are critics, like THEY KNOW what makes a good movie or a bad movie. PUH LEASE!! Its your opinion and unless your God your opinion doesn't matter. (Even Gods opinion doesn't matter to so many these days!) Its art people... and art isn't about opinion. I mean Staying Alive was whose art???? Sylvester Stallone!! That is so cool. Cause you know the writing and directing thing is not his main thing.. and his brother was in it and wrote some of the songs. I'm sorry but I think thats cool.

OK I'm done... If you read this to the end.. Thanks!!
