The Mysterious Benedict Society (2021)
A Disney Adaptation Done Right
As a huge fan of the book, I was super hyped to see this adaptation, and I can say it's everything Disney adaptations have done right. It's not a mere copy of the original but gives enough nostalgia to make it a perfect adaptation.
I admit I thought episode one wobbled a bit, but by the second I was perfectly hooked. The soundtrack by Theodore Shapiro and Joseph Shirley was the cherry on top, the theme/intro was amazing!
Since only two episodes have been released, I will have to come back and edit this to make a full review of the series, but this is my insight on the show so far. It's super fun and I had a great time watching it with my family and as a fan.
Yes, there are cliche moments, but by the end of the second episode I was very excited and I'm glad to say I haven't enjoyed a show this much in a long time, maybe two years. Watch it with your little ones or by yourself, but at least watch the first two episodes. Amazing.
10/10.
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
One Heck of a Surprise
I am writing this review with my thoughts still fresh, as I only finished the movie ten minutes ago.
I haven't written reviews in a shockingly long time, but this movie of all movies, surprisingly was the one that inspired me to start writing again.
Now, time for the review.
The animation
This movie's animation is stellar. It's gorgeous. I can see Sony played with some of the ideas from Into The Spiderverse, but this animation plays a surprisingly significant roll in the film. The main character, Katie, is one quirky teenager, and the animation really fits in with her personality, which is nice because the movie is narrated by her.
Animation: 9/10 - freaking gorgeous.
The story
The story isn't really unique, as I'm sure we've all seen the "rebellious/misunderstood teen and the very bad at communication/I have never used a computer before type of dad, but it handles these themes really well. The story was kind of slow, bumpy and uneven near the start, but at the end I applauded for as long as I could. The payoff is amazing, though it might just a tiny bit have stretched on for too long.
The story: 7/10 - pretty darn good, also quite emotional I may add.
The humor
The humor. I will not say anymore about it. It's so good it bumped this review up by one star. Just go watch it for a good time.
Humor: 10/10 - missed a few times but DAMN it's funny.
Character development
I love the characters. They have their own personality, but aren't entirely two dimensional and each have their own moment. I loved to see the interaction between Katie and her father, and I absolutely love it when the emotional parts hit.
Character development: 8/10 - fleshed out characters
Before I go, I want to say, this movie does so well tying up loose ends and emotional parts. Without spoiling, parts at the beginning show up near the end as well, and it is a very nice surprise.
Overall, an amazing family movie, movie or anything really. It basically gets everything right.
9/10.
1917 (2019)
Don't listen to the critics
This movie is a masterpiece. Obviously. Yes, like some critics say, the film's story is basic and simple. That doesn't mean it's a failure. You don't need something filled with twists and swirls for it to be good. This is a war movie, and it focuses on that very well. Another thing critics say is that the characters are underdeveloped. That is not true. They may not show much emotion or backstory, but you can feel it, and especially relate to it if you were a war veteran from the WW1. I am clearly not, but I must say they handled this film very well. Don't listen to the critics and keep what I and many others who like the film say and watch it. It is a worthy watch. Once you combat all the cons of this movie, you are left with the greatest war movie, and possibly the best movie, of the year.
Artemis Fowl (2020)
Disappointed.
True fans will never win. Why can't they just base it on the books? The flaw is that Disney thinks they can outwrite what was originally written by Eoin Colfer is annoying. It's like Disney doesn't even try anymore - recent movies are no more than a jumbled up story with one developed character and everyone else being thrown to the side. This movie does quite the same. I can see where they tried, but you will be disappointed if you are a fan of the original book series.
It's just Disney. I'm not surprised. Disney is now a very large company known worldwide. They don't even have to try anymore. This is an example of Disney being lazy and uninspired.
Take a look at the How To Train Your Dragon series from Dreamworks. They steered almost completely clear of the original plot and still managed to deliver. How? Because Dreamworks knows how. The plot is it's own while still being respectful to the original piece.
Disney on the other hand is almost always there for the money. The plot is lazy and is full of cliches. Don't watch if you are a fan of the original book. If you have no idea what Artemis Fowl is, give this movie a try. You might like it if I have to be honest, but for the fans, they pushed us aside once again.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
An Underrated Gem
To keep things short,
The cinematography is perfect.
Shots and effects are pure.
Story is fresh, with some minor flaws.
Acting is good, not great.
Duels are absolutely stunning and flawless.
Score. Every soundtrack from this movie is perfect.
The change from Anakin to the Dark Side is a bit unbelievable.
(but still works if ya think about it)
overall is 9.7/10
worth your time
Spies in Disguise (2019)
Just as I expected: Amazing
I knew this movie had lots of potential, and I was right. I saw this movie today in theatres and it surprised me more than I thought. The plot and story was okay, nothing to special, but it still exceeded my expectations. The moral or lesson of this movie is different from most animated kids films, because it jumps into something way deeper than other movies. This movie talks about violence and murder, and basically using it to solve a conflict may only lead to bigger and more serious conflicts. The Villain, for example, Killian, I won't spoil this movie, but he has a really dark backstory. Because of something Lance did, Killian just has this whole plot to take revenge on him. The animation was good, nothing to exciting about that. The movie has kind of a slow start, but when you get past like, 45 minutes, that's when you're completely hooked. The ending is rather questionable, and extremely short after the climax, but still delivers. The characters had a lot of depth, especially Walter and Killian. This is a very worthy watch, and I think you should go watch it in theatres now. (Or you know, just watch it)
Frozen II (2019)
Better Than The First
So, I bought early tickets for this movie, and it was over $100. I went into the theatres on November 21st with very, VERY high expectations for this movie. I watched through the entire movie without shedding a single tear, but this movie's emotional parts still hit me like a train, and keep in mind I'm an 11 year old boy. What I enjoy the most about this movie are the visuals, graphics and effects. The way they animate certain elements in this movie such as water and fire are absolutely stunning. The story and arc is better than the first. The songs are on a different level than the first, yet it delivers just as well. This Frozen is somewhat darker than the first, although still maintaining the Disney spirit. I am not a huge Disney fan, because there are some other studios out there that make better movies IN MY OPINION. But this is on a whole new level than the first.
If you wanted to see this movie in theatres, I recommend you don't change your mind.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
Masterpiece
This movie was great. The plot was a little simple and there were a few flaws here and there, but it all comes together as an incredible movie with the ending.
I don't want to spoil for those of you who haven't seen it yet, but this is a must see.
I also recommend bringing tissues.
This is one emotional film we're discussing
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Shockingly Fantastic
Yes, I am just an 10 year old kid writing a review on one of the greatest films, out there, but I am putting a lot of effort into writing this. When I first saw this movie, I thought, hey! cool! dragons and stuff! not too big of a deal, right?
But this movie goes deep for a "kids movie."
The story is deep and is perfect. The scenes, especially the first time Hiccup flies on Toothless, are stunning, and with the score, it becomes a masterpiece.
This movie clearly deserves a 10/10
