Here's the problem....
9 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
You simply cannot make a whole fantasy dragon/princess epic experience and totally not develop the character's stories.

Good points... Cinematically, this thing was beautiful.

The CGI Was incredible. Netflix spent all our money on that part.

The actors acted the hell out of their parts....even the dragon.

Bad points.... Excuse me whilst I stew over the under utilization of both Angela Bassett and Robin Wright. Both of those characters had such potential....those actors should take someone to task at the utter waste of their potential in what could have been memorable roles.

Whoever wrote or edited the entire royals vs dragon back story needs to go back to school.

Millie was great as always, but even her character was drawn in such a way that I didn't have time to develop caring for her until she saved the dragons life.

This entire thing could have been 10s across the board. Shame on y'all for making this a 5.

I haven't been this annoyed at Netflix for awhile.

I Was SO READY TO HATE THIS....but.....
10 January 2024
It's a reality game show. Generally speaking, I don't watch much of that stuff....at least that's the lie I've been telling myself whilst totally watching reality game shows.

I got sucked into this pretty quickly. The premise is simple....be greedy and take it all or be nice and share the wealth. BUT, If everyone were nice, then it wouldn't have much entertainment value. The first 1 1/2 episodes, I was about ready to turn it off because so many of these contestants seemed so utterly unlikable....my opinion changed pretty quickly.

After the end of episode 4, you really kind of get a sense of who these people are and how they are playing the game. Positive points for the incredibly gorgeous scenery. Negative points for encouraging me to like people who are totally unlikable. Recommend if you like reality game shows. It delivers exactly what you would expect.

This was good, but....
6 January 2024
It took this series awhile to get where it was going. And whatever point they were trying to make was ultimately unclear. That said, I definitely liked it. But, I didn't know how much I was going to like it until the 5th or 6th episode...that is a lot of episodes to get to the point. Thus, the 6 rating.

Overall, it's an enjoyable enough watch. I hope if this gets a 2nd season, we see a bit more of Michelle Yeoh being a total boss. Kind of don't care if we ever see Bruce again, which is unfortunate because it seems like he's supposed to be the center of the show. If he stays, his character needs to be stronger somehow. The way he was written.... I think I got where they were going, but I did not care for the long frickin road they took to get him there.

At any rate, it's a pretty good watch.

Not What I was Expecting
2 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Based on the actual title and description of this limited series, I was expecting this to be a straight forward documentary specifically about the effects of omnivorous versus plant based diets on twins. As a middle aged woman, I was looking forward to seeing what changes took place with each respective diet, what foods were being eaten, how these foods were prepared, etc to determine whether these might be changes I would consider making to my own diet.

Unfortunately, this very quickly turned into less of a documentary on twin diets, and more of a documentary about factory farming and climate change. Which would be fine, but that is not why I tuned in. Additionally, the series is overly packed with interviews from dozens of people who didn't seem to have anything to do with the twin study.

Ultimately, because this was not what I was expecting, I couldn't make it past the 2nd episode. Definitely not for me.

Totally On-Brand Gervais
25 December 2023
If you are an existing fan of Gervais who is familiar with his type of humor, you will probably love this. It is 100% unapologetically Ricky Gervais. I happen to LOVE his comedy shows and found this hilarious. I got in a much needed laugh before having to navigate holiday stuff, and I enjoyed it so much that I will watch it again to help improve my mood after having navigiated holiday stuff. Definitely recommend for Gervais fans.

If you are not a fan of Gervais, find something else to watch. You will not appreciate his brand of humor. There are tons of comedic style choices to stream. Find what works for you.

For me....2 thumbs up. Loved it. Recommend.

Watched this whole thing play out IRL
2 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am from the area where these gruesome murders occurred and watched it all play out in real life. Keep that in mind as you read this.

First... this documentary did an excellent job of telling this story. The filmmakers laid it out exactly how it was. They could have dived more into the "voodoo" (ie satanic panic) that was already prevalent in Central VA at the time and got worse because of the murders, but otherwise, the facts were told well.

Second...John Grisham had nothing to do with this case. His presence in this documentary was pointless. Other than to establish some random celebrity support for Jens.

Third.... Jens and Elizabeth were both convicted. Elizabeth ultimately owned at least part of her involvement via plea deal. Jens was guilty by conviction. The vast majority of locals at that time, believed both parties were at the murder scene and actively participated in the crime. Locals continue believing that to this day. That is not an unreasonable belief. Locals still remember because it was the worst murder to date that we had ever seen or heard of.

Fourth...it's important to remember that in those days, there wasn't DNA analysis, forensic units everywhere, cameras everywhere. While it is considered that some of the police work was shoddy by today's standards, they likely did the best they could given the year, their training, and the absence of anything like that ever happening in Central VA prior to 1985.

Overall this documentary was done well. *Personal thought*.... It disturbs me that Jens has become some kind of falsely imprisoned folk hero in Germany. I would have liked for no part of that to have been included in this documentary. Jens did it. Elizabeth did it. They are both extremely manipulative and intellectually brilliant people who comitted a horrible crime. They never should have been paroled.

Recommend watching.

Fandom is a Double Edged Sword
16 August 2023
This documentary was fine. It was exactly what it sold itself to be....a side by side comparison of testimony from TWO VERY damaged people who HURT EACH OTHER and also happen to be extremely wealthy and in the public eye. It also highlighted the unfortunate power of random keyboard fan warriors, which seems to be a fact that is lost on everyone.

I did not watch this trial because I do not care about these people. I did watch this documentary simply due to the lack of new content because of the strikes.

My takeaway from this documentary...as someone who could not possibly care less...is that it told the story it said would tell. I appreciated that it highlighted how random, ill-informed public opinion on social media influences everything, and also how the legitimate media just takes that ball and runs with it.

If you're not some crazed super-fan, I recommend. It's interesting enough.

A Cheap Knock-off of Dopesick
11 August 2023
I truly cannot believe I watched this entire series. Perhaps, if I had not already watched Dopesick on Hulu I MIGHT have been able to muster up some appreciation for PainKiller....but, frankly even then that would be unlikely.

Everything about this limited series is underdeveloped and wildly unsatisfying. The writing is questionable, the acting is mediocre, and the characters are extremely...well, absent of character.

It is a 6 episode series that dragged on so long it felt like 12 episodes. Also...the sound editing was bad. The background music often overwhelmed the dialog to the point closed captioning might have been useful. Do not recommend.

Just watch Dopesick.

Just...WOW. Naysayers need not reply
14 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was absolutely incredible. I rarely go to the theater anymore....too expensive.

I watched this yesterday on streaming...and I am still feeling it. The actress who played Mamie Till was totally robbed. She was absolutely incredible.

Yes...the movie is LONG, and very heavy on drama and diaglogue. Which is good, but also, it was just so emotional I had to pause and rewind several times due to weeping.

I appreciated that they didn't go full on and show the horrific torture and murder of this poor child. It was quite effective to have that crime happen in sound only, leaving the details to the imagination of the viewer (even though many Americans already know the gross details). I also appreciated that for the most part, it was accurate based on accounts from those who lived it. Very little creative license was taken.

This film and all of the performances are top notch. This is a MUST WATCH for everyone....especially mothers of children who are targets whilst we sit here still worried in 2023, that we might get the call Mamie received. Highly recommend.

Just flat out funny
6 March 2023
I've always loved Chris Rock. I've seen much of what he's done and I've enjoyed it all.

This performance...whilst a bit bumpy in the beginning, was absolutely hilarious. I had to stifle my laughs so my teen wouldn't come to my room and disturb my enjoyment.

I will watch and praise all comedians who throw caution to the wind...Chris Rock, Chappelle, Gervais, Wong, The Elder Millenial whose name i cant remember right now...and back in my day stand ups...Murphy, Prior, Carlin, Williams, Goldberg

It's COMEDY. It's funny....it's full of sarcasm, hyperbole, satire, self depreciation...

Two thumbs up from me. Everything I wanted in a comedy show.

Definitely recommend.

David Harbour Made This
26 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a decent watch.

I would have never watched this if David Harbour wasn't cast.

David Harbour was amazing as the mute ghost. I seriously want his ghost to haunt me. His character's story is what kept me watching.

The not ghost family could have been likable, but for the most part they were written poorly. The likable kid and his girlfriend who loved the ghost could have been more developed. The brother didn't even need to be there. The father was horrible, the mother was mostly uninvolved...the backstory of the family should have been played up better.

I gave this a 6 because David Harbour and his character's back story was amazing. Everyone else was a bit forgettable. Both family stories should have been played up equally.

Excellent Telling of Horrific Events
15 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Everything about the crimes committed as depicted in this story is gross. All of it....the not convicted caller, the staff who strip searched employees on site, the utter ignorance of staff who believed it was okay to not only strip search, but disgrace and sexually assault the victim as part of some "telephonic police procedure", the corporations that knew this was a problem and did nothing....it's just utterly mind boggling AND GROSS.

This story was very difficult to watch. But it is necessary to watch. If for no other reason...to educate people on the utter depravity that exists in this world and the too often absence of justice.

The documentary was well done. Definitely recommend.

Don't Believe the Low Rating
8 December 2022
Any other story, I'd give this a 8. I'm giving it a 10 to offset the unjustified low rating.

This a a good story. It's told from the perspective of those who actually lived through the events. That's the very definition of a documentary. It's interesting, makes you think, makes you cry, invokes some nostalgia....it checks all the boxes very well.

As an American I'll never fully understand the vitriol of the British press or the clear disdain Brit's seem to have with the coupling of Harry and Meghan. As far as the royal family goes, my interest in them is mostly curiosity based. I couldn't care less what they do.

But as far as this documentary goes, even if your interest is passing, it's a good watch. There's a difference between wanting privacy and total media black out. Harry and Meghan didn't request total media black out. They wanted to decide where and when and how they and their family were approached and sold by the media. That is not unreasonable.

As you watch this and consider your rating, think how you might feel if every single thing you ever did for your entire life (even private moments) was photographed and documented in print for 8 billion people to review and critique until the end of time. Also, think how the younger version of you would feel if your mother was killed whilst being chased by aggressive opportunists looking to make a fast buck. Also think how you'd feel if every idiot with a camera was chasing your kids around.

I'm not one to be overly sympathetic to extremely financially priveleged people who live in the public eye...that said, the treatment of Harry and Meghan is totally uncalled for.

I recommend this documentary.

I enjoyed this, but....
4 December 2022
First, Jenna Ortega was amazing. Her performance upped my rating.

Overall, this was not bad, but definitely a YA thing.

I despised the casting of Gomez and Morticia. I also didn't get their vibe AT ALL. It was kind of gross.

The entire story was good, but it was less Addams Family and more....some reimagining that didn't quite make sense.

If you are a YA, you will love this. If you are older...you might scratch your head.

In the end, it was a decent watch. Thing was awesome. Jenna Ortega was awesome. The whole nevermore academy thing added a new layer to the story.

Bottom line....gen z will love this. Gen x appreciates it, but won't think twice about it.

FINALE and overall Review
21 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For the most part, I have loved this show. I invested a ton of time into it. I've watched and rewatched more times than I can count. I left my 10 rating because of that love.

That said, I was largely underwhelmed by the finale. I never cared about Luke and his entire crew. Way too much time was spent on them. I could not have possibly cared less about their deaths, lives, or get back togetherness.

Rosita's end was sad and moving, but her escape from the walkers made no sense. Carol's wrap up seemed off. It was nice to see Ezekiel be King /governor again. Gabriel's overall character growth was nice. Negan just walking in the yard at the end annoyed me. I don't care about anyone in the Commonwealth or where they ended up.

I don't know. This once awesome series was circling the drain for awhile. The finale fell short for me. Everyone knew who wasn't dying because of the spinoffs.

As much as I love this show, I'm glad it's done.

The Crown: Decommissioned (2022)

Season 5 Unpopular Opinion
12 November 2022
First...I LOVE this show. Absolutely love it.

Season 5 fell short for me. I hated the casting of everyone except Camilla. The actor who played Camilla was amazing. The actor who plays Charles is waaayyy too attractive. The actor who plays Diana was wooden, the actor who plays the Queen just did not wholly capture the Queen vibe.

I did not enjoy this season. It felt completely disconnected from the first 4. I wanted to love it...the casting changes didn't flow the same, the storytelling felt disjointed and all over the place.

I didn't give a crap about the boat. I know I was supposed to, it didn't land for me.

Sorry y'all, I watched the whole thing just waiting for it to be over. Season 5 is not for me.

Compelling Story Told Poorly
2 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This documentary was all over the place in terms of its story telling. The portion of the story involving the Falwell sex scandal (which was why I tuned in) was very interesting. Even connecting the evangelical political machine to this story made sense. However, it jumped around so much it became a difficult watch. One minute the documentary is deep into the sex scandal, then the next minute Tom Arnold shows up. The entire program was like that.

This choppy editing really did a disservice to the victim who was trying to tell his story. And on top of that the documentary didn't end with the victim, it ended with reproductive rights.

Also, the music was WAY over the top and only served as a distraction from the story.

Overall, this could have been done better.

Late to the Party
17 October 2022
Just now watched the 2 seasons of Castle Rock.

This series was spectacular. I cannot even believe it only went two seasons.

The casting was amazing. The acting was out of this world. The scenery was gorgeous. The storytelling was riveting.

I need to try to come up with 300 more characters.

If you didn't see this, you missed out. I've never been so glued to a binge like I was with this. Whether or not you like or are aware of Stephen King, this will have you glued to your seat.

If I had ten thumbs, I would put all of them up for this absolute gem.

Watch and enjoy this awesomeness.

Character limit met.

Watch it with a clear eye
12 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Full disclosure .... I totally wanted to hate this. I didn't.

I watched it pretending like I knew nothing about the original. Watching it like that, made this a pretty decent watch.

Now I will compare.. 1. The cenobytes just weren't as menacing as they were in the original 2. Obviously technology made the effects better 3. I enjoyed H1 and H2 throw backs 4. The cube house was cool 5. I hated that people who didn't seek out the cube got killed 6. The...whole family connection from H1 was missing. I never really cared about the human victims or human antagonists. It played like a cheap slasher where you don't really care about anyone.

Bottom line...not half bad so long as you don't compare it to the original.

Just....WOW
9 October 2022
Unbelievable though it may be, even at my age, I was unfamiliar with this story.

The acting, storytelling, and writing is stellar. The way this series has captured the way "B" preyed upon, manipulated and groomed not only his own wife and victim, but the entire victim's family is absolutely riveting.

Having been a child in the 70s who grew up in a religious family, I can understand the naivety and trepidation of the victims. This is very well captured by the writers and actors.

Lastly, the actor who plays "B" gives an incredible performance of a psychologically damaged, manipulative, pervert, pedophile who gaslights everyone he encounters. Actually, all actors gave top notch performances.

Highly recommend.

Never Read the Book...LOVE the 1st Episode
3 October 2022
Clearly, viewers who read the book are very unhappy. I never read the book....saw the movie 30 some odd years ago. But knew this would be different, because...of course it would be.

I watched this assuming I wouldn't like it. I'm happy to say...I LOVED IT. The acting is good, the story is good, I like the way it was updated to current times, I like the casting, love the cinematography. I was not at all disappointed with this retelling of the tale.

I get why fans of the book might take issue. But, just watching this with no knowledge of the book....it's a really good watch. I'm looking forward to future episodes.

Definitely recommend giving this a chance. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Definitely Not for Me
28 September 2022
I made it through the first half hour of this, and quit watching. I'm sure there's an audience for this, but I am not part of that group.

I did not like the filming style. I did not like the casting. I did not like the disjointed way the story was told (at least the part of it I tolerated). For me, this seemed like some kind of art-house experiment meant not to entertain audiences, but rather entertain the egos of the filmmakers whilst putting the audience to sleep.

Not sure who the target audience is here, but if you'd like to be drawn into a story and actually entertained, I'd suggest not choosing this.

The most Disturbing of all Dahmer Stories
21 September 2022
This was a hard watch....for many reasons. Having been a young adult when all this happened, it....what do the kids say?...it hits different.

Well, it's the Dahmer story. So by default, it's hard and gross and scary.

The acting is top notch. Every performance...it's like you're right there in the room watching this God awful series of events unfold in real time. How the actors got through this is beyond me.

The timeline shifts can be a bit hard to follow. It's not the kind of thing you can just pause and come back to. You have to rewind or start the episode over.

Overall, arguably...this is the best Dahmer depiction. I would recommend watching "My Best Friend Dahmer" prior to watching this, as it accidentally and appropriately serves as a prequel.

Recommend for cast iron stomachs. Don't watch this if you're prone to puking.

Excuse me whilst I bow to all things Cobra Kai
15 September 2022
I paid for you tube premium or red or whatever it was called years ago specifically to watch this show figuring it would suck out loud. I was wrong.

This show has been excellent out loud since day one. While this s5 finale episode would be a solid fitting end, I still want more. The creators and writers somehow managed to create the perfect show that incorporates nostalgia, old school, new school, improved reinvented story lines, made it relatable for everyone, didn't get political, kept it fun....this show is KICK ASS.

I would watch this for 20 years. I mean jeez, they even made the poorly written, gross, intolerable Terry Silver from back in the day into a watchable character.

2 thumbs up.

Not the Comedy I was Hoping for
4 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was so looking forward to this movie. I love the 2 lead actors and assumed this would be a great watch because of the casting. It was not good.

It was advertised as a comedy, when in reality it was more of a poorly thrown together mockumentary. The jokes did not land at all. The "interviews" jumped back and forth a LOT, which made it boring and hard to follow. I almost dozed off while watching. This could have been a fantastic satire. It just totally missed the mark.

Bottom line, this was simply not good and it didn't seem to understand what kind of film it wanted to be. I'm grateful I didn't spend the money to see this at the theater.

Do not recommend.
