Snatch (2000)

Lots of fun to watch
27 September 2001
I just saw this film, and I have to say I loved it. There were parts of it I simply didn't understand (like all of Brad Pitt's dialogue and the gypsy stuff- do they really have gypsies in Britain, or is "gypsy" now another term for "trailer trash"??) but overall the film was excellent. Dennis Farina is simply awesome, as he was in "Get Shorty".

Everyone seems to be comparing this film with "Pulp Fiction". "Pulp Fiction" was OK, but not nearly as enjoyable to me as was "Snatch".

DEFINATELY one to watch, and watch it closely!

Overall, I rated this film a 8 of 10, which I always do before reading other comments or seeing the posted rating.

Excellent film translation of Ira Levin's novel.
22 June 2001
I had read "The Boys From Brazil" years before I ever saw the movie. When I did see the film, I was amazed how closely it actually tracked the brilliantly-written novel.

This is an excellent thriller. The Nazi's plot is unraveled slowly, first filling you with confusion, then disbelief, and finally, astonishment & terror. As far-fetched as the Nazi's scheme sounds at first, it really is close enough to medical reality for a taste of true horror.

Gregory Peck is disturbingly realistic as the Nazi doctor Mengele, who masterminds the entire fiendish plot. His character in the film is so real and sinister as to be completely believable. In fact, the entire cast does such a great job that the movie's plot strikes even closer to home.

If you like well-written, well acted suspense/thrillers, this is one of the very best. I highly recommend it.

Kept me out of the theaters for six years
6 June 2001
I saw this movie in 1990, and was severely disappointed. I had read the excellent book many times, and had actually hoped that it would be made into a movie. Such a film couldn't go wrong, I thought. Well, I was wrong!

The characters were OK, but that was the only redeeming feature of this film. Connery was excellent, as he always is. But the plot was poor, and the execution was razor-thin. Did the director even read the book at all, or merely the back cover?

The main reasons I stuck through this bomb of a film is because I really thought that it would get better. I also probably would've walked out after the first twenty minutes, but I had paid $7.50 for the ticket, the most I have ever paid in a theater. However, when Baldwin's character was droning "How do you get someone off of a nu-cle-ar sub", I just about lost it. The ending was so silly that I could not believe the audience stayed in their seats, instead of rioting & burning down the theater.

I so regretted seeing this film, that it was not until 1996 that I dared to visit another theater. Movies like this one really make it hard for me to trust movie reviewers & ratings. It also proves that even big-cast, big-budget films really can be duds.

Sorry guys, read the splendid book instead. I promise you a MUCH better ride!

I gave this a 2, due to the characters. I don't think the film was worth even one point more.

12 Monkeys (1995)

Superb plot & direction make this an awesome film.
18 April 2001
I was never a Bruce Willis fan, but fortunately this did not stop me from seeing TWELVE MONKEYS. This is truly a rare film- one that asks you to think rather than insulting your intelligence. The film is so intricate that it takes several viewings to fully appreciate it. It is NOT your average time-traveling fare, and puts most so-called "sci-fi" films to utter shame. Is there any doubt that Terry Gilliam is a genius?

Beautiful visions and camera work, taut plot & acting make this a must-see/ must own film.

I gave this film a 9 of 10 rating.

Personally, I wish Hollywood would spawn more films like this, as opposed to the cheesy dreck which seems to be so popular these days.

Best movie I ever saw in a theater
18 April 2001
My girlfriend practically dragged me by my heels into the theater to see this movie. I really could not think of a more boring topic for a movie than Mozart. However, this splendid film completely captivated me, holding my attention so well that three hours passed in a virtual flash. At the end, I felt as drained as the priest in Salieri's room. Fantastic sets, wonderful casting and superb use of the camera made this possibly the best film I have ever seen. The plot was disturbingly well done- it was almost too painful to watch at times. Like any really well-done drama, this movie is felt as well as seen. I even had preordered the LaserDisc, so I could have this must-see gem in my home collection.

Whether you are a classical music/opera fan or not, this is essential cinema fare.

Possibly the worst film I have ever seen!
17 April 2001
I purchased this movie on Pay-Per-View, and almost immediately wished I had saved the three dollars. I truly think this may be one of the worst movies ever made. The characters were boring, the plot was non-existent, and the soundtrack was terrible! There wasn't even an attractive girl to look at, something the most boring movie usually has. Two long rap sessions had me diving for the remote control, to turn the sound off. Horrible! At this time, I cannot even think of a single redeeming feature of this film. Does anyone know what the story was supposed to be about? I certainly could not figure it out. All in all, I use this film as a base to judge other bad movies against.

Good video production of the STYX album
8 March 2001
Being a fan of the rock group STYX, I really enjoyed their "Kilroy Was Here" album. When I first saw this video production, I was very impressed by the way the group members (who acted in the film) conveyed the "Kilroy" story. This movie accentuates the album, bringing out meaning that I had never actually heard in the music alone.
