In the Heights (2021)
Needs edited down
There were too many ideas going on. The "blackout" theme of counting the days etc. Didn't need to be there. Just let the blackout happen without telling us it's going to happen.
The two songs that had the "magical" elements (dancing on the side of building and mimed drawings becoming real objects that vanish) were out of place. Why were just those two tiny parts of the movie magic but nothing else?
The ending was disappointing. I used to live in the Bronx and I love NY but i don't understand how giving up this dream of living on the Island to stay in a not great place is supposed to be inspiring? Sorry kids, no beach because we wanted you to grow up playing on dirty concrete? Neighborhood pride is cool and all but be real.
That's my biggest criticism. It just felt to edited, too polished, too fake. They tried to do too many things.
Edit out the more boring parts, shorten this thing! We don't get an intermission in the movie theater like we do on Broadway. Take out the text talking about the blackout, and the random magical moments and it would be so much better.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
George Clooney is in it...it can't be that bad? False.
Wow, just wow. I've always liked George Clooney. I've always loved sci-fi. I was excited when I saw this movie pop up on Netflix. But.....
This was by far one of the most disappointing movies I've ever (partially) watched. I couldn't even make it through the whole thing. I had to fast forward so much.
The "science" was ridiculous. The "fiction" was dull, dry, and tried too hard in all the wrong ways. Halfway through I found myself asking "what is the point of this movie?!"
Next time I'll read reviews before watching sci fi. Ugh.
2036 Origin Unknown (2018)
It's so bad.
Nothing made sense. It was just bad in every way imaginable. So, so bad.
Another Life (2019)
Not even "so bad it's good"
I LOVE science fiction. I'm not even that picky about it. I'm no scientist, but even I know that almost nothing in this entire series was even remotely plausible. But it was the acting that really ruined it. The acting was some of the worst I've ever seen. My niece's High school musical was much much better. I guess it didnt help that the lines were so corny and awful, while trying to be edgy. Oh man it was bad.
And right from the start I knew it was going to be bad, but I kept watching because I was hoping that it would actually be so bad it would be good (somewhere along the lines of Solar Babies) but it was hard to even laugh at it. I just felt sorry for them.
I cant really recommend this to anyone. It's a bit too crass for kids and too dumb for adults. It's not funny and only barely interesting. The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because there are a few brief moments of cool special effects. But rest assured; those moments are promptly ruined by more bad acting and stupid science.
Living with Yourself (2019)
Should have been a movie
I was enticed by the trailers... it seemed like a bit of a thriller with a little bit of sci fi and some comedy...
And it started out that way. But after maybe 3 or 4 episodes, it's started to deteriorate into more of a rom com with extra cringe worthy moments that seemed more like something from Full House. But since I had already invested so much time watching the first half of the series, I just kept going.
I truly wish they had used the beginning, and then taken the best parts out of the rest and made that into a movie. It really should have just been a movie.
