Better Call Saul: Saul Gone (2022)
Season 6, Episode 13
10/10
Perfect finale!
17 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode's name is "Saul Gone", by which, I think, it means that through salvation, that sleazy and unscrupulous Saul Goodman had finally transformed himself back to Jimmy McGill.

In the brief moment when Jimmy and Walter spent days in that hole, waiting for a clean slate while hiding from the law, Jimmy said with pride about how he put himself through school, and Walt's comment on that, precise as it were, knocked the smile from his face right off. This is my favorite scene, because what Walt had seen in him after everything they had been through, was exactly what his deceased brother used to think of him, which was everything he hated about his brother and himself. And yet at that time, Walt's comment made him realize he had become precisely that.

Through the entire final season, the show has been illustrating what a desperate and pathetic wretch Saul had become, they are all for this final moment, when a few clips were shown about his past and present, namely what he did for his older brother Chuck despite how he was treated by him, and how he spilled his guts at court about his crimes to protect Kim and his brother's name.

I bet not a single audience would say they don't love this character. Was it life that screwed him over or the other way around? Some people are so unfortunate that they pay for their wrongdoings with eternal penance. Life has never treated them fairly and they never stood a chance. But Jimmy McGill smiled at the 86-years sentence, who I imagine, would turn down that initial 7-years plea deal as before in a heart beat were he really allowed to make that decision all over again. He lights that cigarette with ease, standing next to Kim, just like old time, and give her that triumphant grin, signifying his win.

BECAUSE HE FINALLY FOUND PEACE.

Maybe people are being too harsh on the new season?
21 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes I also like putting TV shows under a microscopic scrutiny and start performing an autopsy on it. But soon I realized, what is the point? It's not science you study, and you don't end up writing a dissertation about it. That's the general attitude I like to adopt to TV shows. And by that standard, I think it's still enjoyable, it's got a fluent flow and dynamic in it, and a few engaging parts, like Taylor's meeting with dollar bill, Chuck's speech in the senate.

Sure I get some viewers are sensitive to the logic of plot, pivots of character's default settings, protruding political views, etc., but to me, in the sense of the entertaining function of tv shows, I still think it's a great show.

Pop corn, but maybe something more

Love the overall rock and roll vibe! I truly think super hero/villain material has reached a more mature stage where it's no longer the good against evil fairytale cliché, but trying to look under the surface and dig up some of the complexities and messiness of the real world, which makes you think or makes you feel, or both.

I just love this anthology kind of shows, this one is especially brilliant. The two actors brings the theatrical level professionalism throughout the entire show, so creative and talented!

Well constructed story with top notch characterization
10 March 2021
I'm getting a strong Breaking Bad vibe from this show, it's definitely not just because they share the same lead actor, it's because the role Michael bears uncanny resemblance to Walter White, who at the beginning only appears to be a small cog in a huge machine, inconsequential, but when push comes to shove, he can stir things up like you wouldn't believe, intentionally or inadvertently.

It strikes me just how fragile life can be, a perfect life can be smacked out of whack in a blink of an eye. And also just how relatively insignificant morality can be, when it's no longer a code we live by but rather a term to describe how deep a person has to be provoked to throw caution to the wind and commit to pure madness.

It has some glamor

Warning: Spoilers
Even the narrator in the show himself said it's meandering and chaotic. That is generally what it feels like when I watched it. The characters and the story are essentially good, I just think the way this show tells the story is beneath them. I assume it was intended, but it didn't achieve the effect it was after, but rather seems whimsical and sloppy.

However, like I mentioned above, I like the construction of those characters. They are complicated and yet natural enough to seem real. Especially I like one part where Larry chatted with his old lover for the last time in the bright sunshine and he finally passed away, when Larry tucked him in and whispered to him "Sleep well, my friend!" It was one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen.

I gotta say in this show I see the shadow of Fringe, but different background settings and different priority of how to tell the story.

I think it's brilliant to produce such a natural but hilarious TV show under special circumstance. Even under lockdown, the innovatives can still find a way, that's the spirit!

No one mentioned this show has Dan Harmon as a role?
17 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First I thought it's just a coincidence, the guy's name is Dan and he does look like real Dan Harmon and he's also a genius TV writer, until the robber flashed his T-shirt of Rick and Morty. That part is weirdly entertaining.

I stand corrected about my previous review
8 June 2020
The show after the 8th season is actually pretty good. I mean, Charlie Sheen was really talented and great and all, but the show after he left was still outstanding. It became a different style, actually less depressing generally speaking, besides without Charlie, Alan Harper had a better chance of showing his unique charm. I think people simply expressed their grudge of Charlie leaving in ways of despising the rest of the show.

Engaging! Much fun to watch!

The topic is platitude in the scifi field, but the story and its construction are very well done. The warmth and coldness are discoverd in the process of your quest while you experience how far technology can push the boundary of life and morality. I think this show might want to convey that social crises created by technology may just be a window of opportunity for evolution of social concept. Anyway, amazing show!

Did he do it?
31 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The story keeps circling back to the core question: did he do it? And in the end, it still remained a mystery. That's why I find this show intriguing. Just when you think Jacob is guilty, or not, something new is brought to your attention and changes your previous belief. The twists and turns are like roller coaster ride.

Considering the toll the family took because of this case, if Jacob really did it, then it'll be no doubt a great tragedy. On the other hand, if he turned out to be innocent after all, then the irony of the story is pretty self-explanatory. Either way, it'll be an enormous impact on the audiences. Great show!

The Quentin-est for sure.
30 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Of all his movies, this one is the Quentin-est. I'm not gonna tell you what that means exactly because I can't explain either. Call it a genre, a style, a methodology or a spiritual blast if you want.

I can't say I love this movie, in fact I felt like I had to sit through the first hour. The build-up is kinda dull and plain for my taste. But then all of a sudden it got good, I think it was around the part where Butch ran into Wallace on the street. The scripture Jule quoted repeatedly is the soul of the movie. It can be simple or philosophical however you choose. That's the beauty.

Basically it's about little guys in an ambiguous world painted by aesthetic violence and crude jokes, trying to make a living and search for meaning of life. It's the kind of work that allows you to tap into a more poignant and profound level if you dig hard enough. And if not, you can still enjoy the rush and the deliberate black-and-white pleasure.

A good movie in general (7. 5/10)
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if people just set their bar really high or are simply too cynical. Honestly the story is bit predictable, but there's something desirable. For one, I think Lily Collins' performance in this movie is exceptional. It's not the kind of role she used to play, but she really brought out some hidden aspects of the character and kept the emotional flow at the surface. For her performance only, I think an 8 or 9 is not unreasonable.

Now in my opinion, the major problem of the movie is it kinda played fast and loose with the back story of the character Carson. The reveal of his true identity is supposed to be the highlight and climax of the movie. However, the movie didn't give the character enough impact to match the previous build-up.

Even with a serious flaw, this movie isn't as worthless as a lot of people claimed to be. I suggest you watch it before you judge it.

Amazing! I get now why it became such a hit!

Speaking as someone who's not a starwars fan, it is an amazing show, fascinating and bewitching. The story was well told like an old tale or legend, giving out mystical and distinct starwars vibe as it was intended. I can't wait to watch the next season. By the way, love the baby yoda cg, and Pedro Pascal literally showed his face in the show once, lol!

Two and a Half Men (2003–2015)

8/10 for season1-8
28 May 2020
In fact I'm inclined to give a 7, which of course is still for S1-8. But eventually I think the show is still good in general.

As someone who's seen his fair share of sitcoms, I always insist that when it comes to evaluate a sitcom, hilarious and enduring jokes and other content is not the sole prerequisite. A good sitcom must have good values and virtues. They're the soul of the sitcom, without which the show would go down a slippery slope and eventually reeks of moral ambiguity.

Before I write this review, I read some of the existing reviews, most of which consider Charlie Sheen the backbone of the show and I agree. Some feel sorry for the character Alan Harper, who didn't deserve being belittled all the time. Some think the show encouraged disrespectful stereotypes and made bad jokes about sensitive social problems. And the elephant in the room would be Charlie Sheen's departure, which was also linked to his questionable life issues.

And that is exactly what I'm talking about. This show has too many questionable contents, and it would appear a lot of real life issues leaked into the show, which was supposed to be a safe haven away from the dark ugliness. Without a right direction, no matter how hilarious the show is, that's all it could be, and nothing more profound.

I absolutely enjoyed watching this show, but sadly it was polluted by toxic creating environment and the complexity of real life.

It's a good movie. I like a joyful adventure story and adorable animals. RDj's performance might have leaked some residual scents of Tony Stark, but still exceptional. Anyway such a delight watching it.

Hands down the best show ever!
17 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Didn't know I can write review for the same show twice. After I watched the finale and finished the show for the first time, I jumped back in right away from the beginning for the second time. I found so many fantastic episodes that I might have forgotten before. The paintball episodes are my favorite. Life shouldn't always be treated as games, but how cool would it be if once in a while we can live as if we're in a game and fight alongside friends? And there are Halloween theme episodes, among which the most memorable one is the zombie outbreak episode, exploring intense stories in a sitcom is refreshing to say the least. And there's one episode where Jeff faked a conspiracy class to get free credit and he encountered a real fake conspiracy, meanwhile Troy and Abed built a legendary blanket city. The twists and turns in that episode were such treats for the audiences. Then there's the episode where the dean was filming a new commercial for Greendale and he went too far and had a mental breakdown. Just when he thought he had ruined everything, Abed had made the best commercial ever by only editing pieces of existing footage and his own documentary. That episode is real tear gas, I cried at the end. Anyway, I can discuss episodes from this show all day long. It really is and always will be THE BEST SHOW EVER!

We think outside the box, this show thinks outside the universe.
13 May 2020
Sometimes it's elaborate and well thought out cute plots, sometimes it's wild ideas in a dream, sometimes it's funny or sad satires, anyway, you never know what's gonna be the surprise you find in the next episode. There seems to be no limitation, no boundary, no restriction to how far the writers of the show can think or dare think. Although so far the new season appears to be more and more obscure and off mainstream. Personally I like early seasons better.

Intelligence is the new sexy!
13 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like I'm watching a thrilling Hollywood blockbuster. The stereotype of the character professor is not uncommon from previous shows, movies, even novels, but what the show did is focus on details, different stages of the robbery, deep insight of contemplation, countermeasure deployment, plot twists and surprises. The whole show is a close and clear demonstration of dynamic shifts. The rhythm of the show is elastic and tasteful.

Enlightenment for a new generation of sifi
13 May 2020

It started with pieces and parts of fringe cases, but didn't just stop there, the show expanded to the scale of parallel universes, time line revision and future wars, it transformed from merely strange crime investigations to a sifi epic. The grand world view deeply impresses me.

13 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not gonna say how great this show is, anyone who has watched it would already know that. The performances were incredible, especially NPH's, I am speechless. In fact I wanna mention one of the most memorable and illuminating scenes. It was one episode where the gang was having dinner just a few days after Stella left Ted at the altar, and they saw Stella was there too at the restaurant so they went under the table. I really like the ending of that episode, where Ted had an epiphany after seeing how great Stella and Tony were as a couple, even though he intended to give a cold and brutal speech. Ted said, sometimes you think you have to choose between running away and confrontation, but there's a third option, and that is to let it go, and only when you do that, can you truly get closure and move on. That episode blew my mind! And the entire show was filled with great stories like that. That's why I'm crazy about this show!

Better Call Saul (2015–2022)

Join the Breaking Bad universe
12 May 2020
There's a nice touch shared by both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, the realness. I can't exactly put my finger on it, maybe it's the story itself, or the shooting technique, the performance, the light and post-production, maybe it's all above or something else. It just gives me a feeling that I'm not watch a show through a screen, but actually there with all the characters and observing them up close. It's the little details, trivial or not, that makes this show great. Apart from that, the magic of the show is that we all know exactly where the story is going, and it's not ideal. We all enjoy the ride so much, but we feel so frustrated thinking about the destination. Part of the charm comes from that very frustration.
