I don't know what I'm missing but I loved this movie. I thought it was super fun and a great midnight flick. The characters are well developed and the story has some great twists and turns. Kyle Mooney's video clerk character Garret was absolutely hilarious. The soundtrack was era appropriate to a tee and was also great. The filmmakers did a good job avoiding a pure nostalgia/pastiche trip and building an interesting story with a solid script. Not sure why people aren't enjoying this. I'm a huge Kyle Mooney fan so maybe I am biased but I thought it was great. The female and male teenager leads gave stellar performances. Go see Y2K and get ready to laugh!
Saw at the Chicago Film Fest October 2024. Had heard the film was "meta" and did not know what to expect...absolutely loved it. Imaginative, fun, insightful for big fans like myself and super well made! Not your standard procedural rock doc, in a good way. The film took a chance by layering a musical, a "fake" melodramatic biopic (starring Joe Keery in a hilarious and well played role), concert footage and real interview footage. Steve Malkmus and one of the producers gave a great Q and A after and it was fun to see Steve (seemingly) satisfied with the film! I hope this gets a broader theatrical release or at least a proper online release because it is an inventive, delightfully fresh music film and deserves to be seen!
What a refreshing show! In my opinion the talkshow format has sadly been played out for a while. Modern talk shows lack the spontaneity and natural feel of what made people like Letterman so great back in the day. John has revived that spirit in his show and it is a joy to watch! Art meets comedy meets absurdism meets genuinely interesting conversation. I hope the show is rebooted, and I would love to see him take it nationwide. As a biased Chicago resident, it would be amazing to see John do a Chicago run!!
Kudos to Netflix for putting this on and kudos to the producers and writers who contributed to this amazingly quirky piece of work!
