Hawa (2022)
Extraordinary
It's an amazing movie. I like slow-burns and thrillers. I'm used to watch Nordic-noirs. Never ever I thought some Bangladeshi movie is going to be so good! Before I watched it I read so many negative reviews! I had a very low expectation from it. But It was mind-blowing.
If you are familiar with Chanchal Chowdhury's acting you can forget them all. He never acted like this. It seems like he's not acting at all.
The first half of the movie is really slow as showing some normal people doing normal things. If you concentrate on the details you can figure out how many aspects of life are depicted there.
Someone complained about showing the women as too much sensual or sexual. Well, it's very true that the boats around the shoreline doesn't permit women on their boat. It's a taboo that they maintain. I don't think the actress is portrayed as an object of desire. Have you seen any young gypsy snake-charmer in the roads of Dhaka? They're beautiful, I mean they are feared , sassy but beautiful! And they never appear to be not groomed. So, if some part of her skin is showing that's because director is honestly recreating their style with honesty.
Another point about the story- It's not a direct answer to every question. It explores the darkest nature of humankind. It's not a comfort movie. Those who wants to see a comfort movie and like to see their heroes to win and smile in the end of the film should stick to watching Bollywood Masala movies instead ( No insult intended on the Masala movies).
Final thought, it's not a movie for all. If you like to see different characters in different daylights you can watch it. If you like the Korean movie " The Box" or "Parasite" you'll like it. My friends didn't like it. Because for them to like a movie it has to make complete sense. The job of making sense of the story is left upon the viewers to some extent I guess.
