Lifting the standards of tamil movies
26 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is brilliant. I feel really blessed to have lived in the same time as Kamal. The movie has a much deeper message beyond all the expensive action sequences. We all know Kamal is a brilliant actor but his brilliance in screenplay, dialog and direction shows in this movie. There is a sequence in which Kamal attempts to push Omar's kid over a swing and the kid (who wants to be a doctor not a terrorist) chides Kamal saying he is not a kid. However Kamal finds a young Jihadi though considerably older willing to play with the swing, showing how innocent kids are being brainwashed by the terrorists. This shot itself shows the director's touch right there. But Kamal exceeds this feat in a couple of shots later. The young kid who plays with the swing kills himself in a suicide bomb attempt. When Kamal reads the news item and walks through the Afgan village he sees another kid in a swing. I doubt many will watch movie closely to see this directorial brilliance.

Folks should see this movie very closely as the plot is implicit at places. There is no punch dialogs or explicit narration of the plot. This is a clear attempt to lift the standards of tamil movies to another new level. It is disappointing to see the Tamil Nadu (TN)government making this such a tough road for such a great artist. HE IS JUST BORN AT THE WRONG TIME AT THE WRONG PLACE. Instead of celebrating such a great artist we make it tougher for him. What a pity!

I bet everyone will be talking about Kamal's feminine mannerisms and the great action sequences. But the movie is much more that just those.

Couple of suggestions to Kamal sir. 1. Make the songs available in Itunes 2. After a month or so make the movie available in sites like Amazon Prime and Vudu . I bet that he can get all his money back and more even the movie is not released in TN. It will be TN's loss not his.

Realistic crime thriller
20 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie as this was available in Netflix for streaming. But I wonder how many such good movies are made internationally that I miss. This is one of the masterful realistic crime thrillers I have ever seen. Oh yeah the killer is never caught but the way the characters are developed, how detectives have to work with minimum technology is amazing.

The movie is a great example of how in real life the killer may never get caught. One thing that leaves you wondering is why a serial killer(the third one who came very close of being a suspect) would give his real address when requesting a song during the killing? Some thing does not add up here so you keep wondering who really was the killer.

But the most interesting aspect of the movie is how realistic the movie really is.

May I will get to see more such great movies .

Entertainer but not a classic
14 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Watched movie yesterday. This movie strikes me as an average entertainer nothing great. Everyone seems to say that Kamal's hard work has to be appreciated. I do not agree with that statement. If the movie's story line needed 10 characters and if he had taken up these characters then that can be appreciated. But here the case is first he "determined" what the 10 characters he needs to perform and then created a story line around it.

Do not get me wrong the movie is very entertaining if you can tolerate the cartoon like make for the characters of Ian Fletcher, George Bush and Boovaraghavan. My question why did anybody NOT tell Kamal that these makeups look AWFUL. Afraid to shout the emperor has NO clothes? I think Kamal should surround himself with genuine critics not YES men.

This movie does not go anywhere near his classics like Nayagan,Devar Magan, Salangai Oli, Mahanadhi or even Virumandi.

Having said that, the movie is surprisingly entertaining though story line is written intelligently around the 10 characters. I think K.S.Ravikumar has played his role (Thankfully!) in an intelligent screenplay that keeps the movie going and keeping it tight. Thank god there is no lapse like Hey Ram or Kurudhi Puyal where Kamal had a free ride and watered down the screen play.

Kamal's greatest strength is comedy and Naidu role is surprisingly refreshing in its comedy timing that keeps movie going. Punchlines like " He can speak five languages fluently in Telugu" keeps movie going.

Asin has performed brilliantly as an Iyengar girl and the song "Mukunda Mukunda" is great.

There are some intelligent dialogs and Kamal's versatility in dialog delivery as a Telugite speaking Tamil, Tirunelveli Tamil, casual Tamil, iyengar patti Tamil , north Indian Tamil, Muslim Tamil is all very visible. But we go to a movie after great expectations not to see a show of mimic but a great classic.

The film is definitely technically superior in integrating graphics with commercial sets and in Photography (Ravivarman) Yeah yeah Kamal spent hours putting on makeup, 80 crores were spent making the movie, there was great marketing and Kamal has 10 roles.

So what? I need much more than that from Kamal. Hey! some body save Kamal from himself. GET BACK TO ROOTS.

Great Background score and screenplay
18 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I was blown away seeing this movie. I rented it without any expectations. You should also probably do that. But the screenplay and the build up is great. The music and special effects are top notch. THe land lord and land lady have done great not to mention the Axe gang boss and his side kick.

I particularly enjoyed the sequence where the musicians use the musical instrument to fight. THe background score and the special effect combination in this sequence is great. You should definitely appreciate the directors imagination in this sequence.

The movie is also very funny. Consider the comment by beast when he exclaims " I do not know Lions Roar could be done with the speaker".

THis is a great entertainer

A great movie
17 February 2006
I accidentally stumbled across this movie when I was channel surfing and I am glad I did that. Luckily the start cast caught my eye and I was able to catch the movie from the beginning. What a powerful movie. I consider a movie powerful when you don't stop thinking about the movie for a long time after you have seen the movie and it moves you in a certain way.

This movie made me think about the ruthlessness of the corporate world where anything goes as long as you achieve. Though this movie concentrates on selling real estate, I hope some one makes a movie how only 'connections' not the real talent can advance you in the corporate world. It also proves how you should be conscience free and should forget about your family if you want to really grow. Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris , Alec Baldwin all give a very powerful performance as conscience free salesmen and motivators. Alec Baldwin provides a very powerful performance of a ruthless motivator. On one hand whether you feel sorry for the plight of these salesmen. I almost yelled "common man quit the f***ing job" to Ed Harris during Alec Baldwin's motivating speech. Sorry for the profanity but you automatically get into that kind of language as you watch this movie. This is another example how powerful this movie is. On the other hand you feel angry the way they cheat common men of their hard earned money.

I completely agree with other members comment that this should be in one of the top 200 films. This film reminds me of 12 Angry me which was another master piece solely dependent upon powerful acting, script and dialog delivery. Jonathan Pryce has turned in a very subtle but excellent performance as a hapless common man who fall prey to these aggressive sellers.

Overall a very great movie that you should not miss.

I dont know what the fuss is all about
15 November 2003
After seeing this movie after all those rave reviews, just one thing struck me, "Some body has to shout the king is naked". And I dont understand why this movie is in top 250 and has got rave reviews.

The movie is gripping no doubt and has a lot of unexpected turns which I totally agree (like pulp fiction), but there is nothing more to it. Naomi Watts has a great body which she shows off in her skirt and there is a very hot rehearsal scene which she performs with a old man (Blame it on Rio!!) and there are a couple of great lesbo scenes and thats it.

Looks like nobody could understand the movie, but if you question they say dont use logic and this movie appears directly to emotions!!. Looks like an amateur shot a home video and linked all up without any logic. But all this movie is just unexpected turns, beautiful women and some hot scenes I will give a 5 for that!!!

Intelligent Natural Comedy
28 August 2003
Well I am really out of words to explain about this wonderful intelligent comedy. Though both "pinkies" look old in this movie, the intellegent comedy behind this movie is excellent. It is definitely a must watch who wants a natural well scripted comedy. Makes me wonder why people spend billions of dollar to make crap and how people were able to make such good movies with so less money and such an excellent script.

Hooked to it
9 February 2003
When I took the DVD of this film along with a couple of other movies from library, I postponed seeing this one after reading about the movie in the back cover of DVD. It had been mentioned that all but 3 minutes of the movie has been shot in a room. The movie was black and white and there was no female cast!!. Finally when I found some time when there was no other thing to do, I watched this movie, my god I was hooked. This movie is a great lesson to new directors and screen play writers as to how a great movie can be made without all the gorgeous locations, millions of dolllars, graphic special effects etc. Infact once the cast get into the jury room there is not even a back ground score. All natural sound recorded at the set. As some body else had mentioned Lee J cobb steals most of the scenes, but Henry Fonda's performance is great as a soft sell/submissive player. He carefully releases one card after other from his hand at precise moments.

For example he does not tell any one he has a switch blade knife untill others really push him and challenge him about the rarity of the knife. That is a genius.

Infact I watched the movie two times back to back and I could not help but marvel where all this talent nowadays. I was tempted to watch it third successive time but did not do it because it was late.

A must watch. Don't miss it

The Sting (1973)
9/10
Intelligent Entertainer
29 January 2003
I took the Sting DVD from the local library. What first attracted me to the DVD was the fact that it has won 7 Oscar awards. The movie is worth every minute of it and is a thorough entertainer. The first turn comes within 10 minutes of the movie where the run man finds out he has been conned by Robert Redford. The twists are all through the movie untill the unexpected climax. The screen play is very tight and all characters have played their part very well. THe way Paul Newman cons Robert shaw in the poker and the way everytime he calls him with a wrong name is worth watching and is very hilarious.

The movie has a very intellegent plot. The only hole I saw in the movie was if the assasin "Salino" knows who Hooker was (Robert Redford) how he is able to con her boss Lonnegan (Robert shaw) as Kelly. I doubt whether I missed something.

This movie sets a great precedent to movies like Oceans Eleven and is a must watch to everyone who likes this type of movies

Forrest Gump (1994)

It is so difficult being a Forrest Gump
25 September 2001
I recently saw `Forrest Gump' and was amazed. I could not understand, whether it is a family drama or a philosophical movie. As I felt that the movie is much more than a family drama, I am not discussing the story of the movie here.

I am trying to analyze the movie from a philosophical/ psychological angle. Is there a message the movie is trying to convey? Does this movie laugh at people who are supposedly very intelligent, rich but never satisfied or happy? Does intelligence above a certain level really makes people feel unhappy about every thing? Is Emotional Quotient (EQ) more important than Intelligent Quotient (IQ)?

Every body knows that focus in so important for success. Yet we are so distracted in life that we are unable to concentrate all our energy in a single thing. Forrest Gump does this so effortlessly. When he runs he runs , when he plays ping pong (Table tennis) he does just that. Is it because of his below average IQ? Or is it because of the very high level of mental maturity he has achieved?

The way Forrest handles all his successes is unbelievable. We see people who become head strong for such trivial things, and Forrest wins again and again without even bothering about the level of success he has achieved. There is a particular scene in which Forrest says to his bench mate in the bust stop ` I went to Washington again, met the president again' the statement sounds so naturally innocent. The actor and the director deserve a special congratulation in this particular scene for making it sound so natural and do not look like a egoistic boast.

The director also captures the way Forrest handles defeat. Forrest never gives up being a Shrimp boat captain and he is never bogged down by a failure. This finally makes him a millionaire.

It is quoted in Bhagavad-Gita that `Treating pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat alike, engage yourself in your duty'. The statement though it may look so simple is extremely difficult to implement in real life. Now researchers have found that Emotional Quotient (EQ) is more important than IQ. Forrest scores so high in EQ, that his IQ becomes irrelevant for all his successes. I really don't know whether the director conveyed this message intentionally.

This movie also has some incredible acting, where you do not realize that Tom Hanks has really acted. I guess he has become Forrest Gump himself. The scene where he shows some sort of emotional outburst is when he discovers about his child. I am sure even a robot will be moved by the scene where he asks his girl friend whether the child is dump or intelligent and asks her permission to talk to his child. He does not ask permission in words, but his facial expression speaks thousand words. Every body else in the film has done excellent support acting.

A brilliant movie and a must see.

A very good TV serial
19 August 2001
A great movie with a series of murders, a subtle sense of humor and some great acting. It of course lacks great locations, any great cinematography or anything. But is is made up by a tight screen play and good acting. No wonder this came as a TV series because when you watch the movie you get a feeling of watching a TV serial.

But I would recommend it for any intelligent viewer who likes intelligent movies

Mysterious mystery
13 August 2001
The movie is about stealing a very valuable process which can fetch millions of dollars (how much is also mysterious as the director cleverly hides the value). The story starts slowly but take tremendous twists and turns as it moves on. The movie is intelligently directed and the punch line trust no one is well kept on. You will really enjoy the movie when you see more than once. The downside of the movie though is the expressionless face of the hero. Even we the viewers show better expressions with each twists and turns the hero just holds his head for everything. But a must see for a mystery lover
