Toni Erdmann (2016)
Chewbacca doesn't die
A very creepy old man, sparse dialogue, and mainly random occurrences do not make for a good movie. I understand that the film was about loneliness and a father's concern for his daughter's workaholic life style. However, it played out in unbelievably bizarre behaviors and circumstances. The film's pace and pathos reminded me of "Lost In Translation", but without any of the latter's charm and charisma. Some of my problems with the film could be due to my lack of understanding of German perspectives and sense of humor. Perhaps the planned American remake will solve this problem for me. In the meantime, I'll go into my own thousand yard stare.
Fargo: Somebody to Love (2017)
Storyline not up to the standards of seasons 1&2.
The actors were excellent even when you didn't always understand the reasoning behind their actions. The character of V.M. Varga, superbly played by David Thewlis, was apparently bulimic. This seems a bit ironic for someone who stated that he could not tolerate waste. As for the ending, well David Thewlis (Remus Lupin) is, after all, a wizard.
The Leftovers (2014)
The title of this series should be "The Phquedovers".
If the writers didn't use the word f**k or some variation thereof the script would be bereft most of its dialog. The only time in my life when this word was used so frequently was in boot camp for the U. S. Air Force. I don't know how the writers got it into their heads that the word "f**k" is used so often by seemingly everyone. However, in my experience it is mainly used by high school boys, in HBO productions and ubiquitously by military basic training instructors. It can't even be used to write an f-ing review on IMDb.
Passengers (2016)
A completely beautiful sci-fi love story
Most of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes were not fresh in their reviews of this film. They were dead wrong on this one. It has a great story, beautiful cinematography, the most elegantly designed spacecraft I have seen in any sci-fi film and award worthy performances from the entire cast. The story was a bit formulaic but the formula worked in this film because of the way it was revealed.
Grandma's Boy (2006)
Naughty, nasty, vulgar; brilliantly cast and acted and funny as hell.
"Grandma's Boy" is a comedy in the truest sense of the genre, there is only one serious plot line in the whole movie and it is immediately transformed into one of the funniest scenes in the film.
I didn't see the movie in a theater, so I don't know how a large audience reaction would have been. However, all of 5 adults in my household - ranging in age from 18 to 59 - laughed 'til it hurt at least 6 or 7 times when we watched the DVD.
But just a few names in the supporting cast shows that this was a film brimming with gifted comedic talent. Among others, they include: Doris Roberts, Shirley Jones, Shirley Knight, Kevin Nealon, David Spade and Rob Schneider. Great talent, great writing, great performances make for a great bawdy comedy.
I'd put "Grandma's Boy" the same category as "Animal House". To me it is just as funny. It won't achieve the classic status of the latter because it is neither the first nor the best of its kind. But it is very funny and, for non-prudes, well worth the rental price
