Fast n' Loud (2012)
Russell J. Holmes ruins yet another show
I have a lot of respect for Richard and what he actually achieved on his own. He went bankrupt several times while he tried to get the brand up and running, and it paid off in the end,
The show is not bad in the beginning, but with every season it got exponentially worse, and the last seasons are just hour long ads for various parts they use on the car, some dealership, "charity" events or anything else that uses every ounce of fame Gas Monkey had gotten over the years to their own gain.
It is the same with the people in it too. They had some decent and sometimes even fun moments in the beginning, but it did not take long until it all got scripted and boring. And the introduction of the most obnoxious and incompetent person in tv's history, Russell J. Holmes does not help either.
Everything is more or less the same in the later seasons. Richard drives to see a car, uses a couple of catchphrases, test drives it, haggles, buys it, get it to the garage, repair it, some more phrases, make a huge point out of where the new part are from, to get some name and ad's in, then they get close to some scripted deadline, more catchphrases, car is of course always finished and often shown with the crew in some sort of costumes, with a few more catchphrases and then it fades out.
Not what i was expecting
I love music.
When I was eight years old, I saved my allowance for what seemed like an eternity before I finally got enough to buy my very first cassette. It was Moody Blue.
Today I have 186243 albums but I still find time to listen to my very first every now and then. What fascinates me most about music is the power it have over us, how It makes us feel and remember in ways nothing else comes close to. If you want to reminisce about your first love, put on the songs you listened to when you where together, and the memories come flooding. It can lift your spirt just as easily as it can break you. It can calm you or make you aggressive depending on what you play. And it have been used for both by billions of people trough the ages for just that purpose.
And that brings me to the movie. Yes, it uses some of his work, but it is also supplemented with modern music that only came to be decades after his death. And why is that ? Even today his music lives on, though not to the extent it once did of course, but the man is in no way forgotten. And there are over 200 albums not including studio and live, but remixes and posthumous compilations to prove it. So why is his and the music that influenced him not enough ?
When I listen to my albums, I don't jump from classical to death metal. I play according to mood, and listen to anything that fits it. The soundtrack here feels like that kind of jumping. It is so random that to me it kills the spirit in the movie.
The story is ok but very messy, and a lot is never told. Austin Butler's acting is very good, while Tom Hanks in a fat suit is not. And the music choices in a movie about one of the most recognizable icons that have ever lived brings it severely down.
Night Teeth (2021)
Just another Netflix miss
Ten points for having Sydney Sweeney in it, and minus ten for absolutely anything else, but since this is IMDb and it is not possible to give zero as it deserves, it gets one.
It may have been a good idea from the start, but when it is badly written, poorly executed, slow, tedious, boring, pretentious and deceitful there is not much left to praise.
It pretends to be seductive and sexy but is in reality just another pg movie that uses it as a substitute and camouflage for the lack of any real story.
If you are a boy, girl or something else that just entered your teenage years and gets excited by anything with a pulse, I'm sure you will love it. Anyone else should stay clear.
Oh yay (yawn) another one
Netflix's stock plunged over 35% in early April if I remember correctly. And what spooked the investors was that they lost over 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter alone.
I am not surprised. At all.
Yes, some probably left over increased competition from rival platforms, but with the exception of a few monster hits like Squid Game the vast majority of everything they have released the last years, is of this calibre. Pretty boring, very predictable, and as so often before, miscast actors that got the job in an attempt of drawing in more viewers on their name alone.
Awesome, IMDB in their infinite wisdom have now decided that you need a minimum of 600 characters to explain why this dribble is bad.
Well then, how about the lack of prescription glasses for one ? Is it really that hard to get a pair of plus 0.10 ? Or minus for that matter, I don't care if he has myopia or hyperopia, but I do care that he uses clear lenses, as it makes realism fade at the same speed of Netflix subscriber base.
The Core (2003)
So bad it's good
Yes, it is yet another movie where the mighty Americans saves the planet. And yes, it is just as predictable as the four million others where they save the day.
It is also right up there with creationism when it comes to creative solutions littered with pseudo science designed to give the arguments validity in covering up the flawed logic, and I imagine it would be an absolute nightmare of a movie if you where to take it seriously, but why would you ?
The scene where they exit the vehicle and strolls around 700 miles beneath the surface of the earth is enough to make you chuckle for days, so watch it for a good laugh instead.
"And now for something completely different"
It felt right when Monty Pythons famous quote fell into my head when i started writing. Not because it is funny, though it is in a very good way, but because they where both lightyears ahead of their time.
It is hard to find words to describe it, as it is so different from anything i have ever seen and probably ever will again. Every single sentence and setting feels real and surreal at the same time due to the excellent acting of everyone involved and the exuberant behaviour of the people they portray. It is heart warming and heart breaking in the same beat, and the only thing i can think of that even comes close to describing it would be kissing someone you love right after they have broken up with you.
It is absolutely phenomenal. One of the very best series i have ever seen, and i have seen my fair share, and then some.
Better Call Saul (2015)
"A leopard cannot change it's spots"
I liked it up to the last season when the writers turns to altruism to wrap it up.
In the real world it takes time between entering a plea bargain and appearing before a judge for sentencing. It is not something that is done in an afternoon. Time that in this case would be spent behind bars, since there was no effort on Saul's side to post bail. Most likely also spent in a New Mexico jail since he was extradited there. Jails that according to ACLU-NMI where so overcrowded and financially strained at the time that it caused it's prisoners to routinely suffer abuse and inadequate care.
I get that it seems like a nice way to wrap up the show, and one of the reasons why Saul convinces Lalo to let Kim go instead of him is to let us know that he still have a heart. Just as they did when he is on the bus and proclaims that he is not Saul, he is Jimmy, and we are spoon-fed to believe that he has gone back to being Jimmy, the good guy he was in the beginning.
It is how ever highly implausible that someone doing the things he did during both shows, suddenly throws themselves under the bus after being incarcerated in such a place, even for only a couple of days, let alone months, to suddenly "do the right thing" knowing full well it meant he would stay in a similar or even worse place not only for seven more years, but the rest of his life.
Mannen fra Snåsa (2016)
The question is why
A movie about a man with "healing hands" that refused to be tested by anyone. Norwegian scientists and researchers expressed scepticism over his claims and leading sceptic James Randi offered Gjerstad a million dollar prize if he could demonstrate his abilities under controlled conditions. He never did.
I have no doubt that he was a warm, kind and exaptational man, but I also know that the power of suggestion can be a healing force on it's own.
It is correct that he never made money from what he did, but according to the economics journal Kapital, publishers bookstores, authors, directors, and moviemakers made around 120 million Nkr associated with the brand "Snåsamannen" as he was called in Norway. That should be enough to make you think why this movie was made in the first place.
Metal Lords (2022)
It is not bad if you don't take it serious
It does have really terrible writing, ( but what can you expect from half of the dumb and dumber duo that destroyed GoT, DB Weiss ?) It's loaded with clichés and of course the usual non prescription glasses, but it also have a heart, the coolest cameo's in at least 20 years, and a killer soundtrack.
Love, Death & Robots (2019)
Business as usual
Season 1 is simply amazing. It is a true masterpiece in every way but of course this is Netflix so as usual they messed it up with sub par sequels.
Season 2 is the parasitic twin. It is missing absolutely everything that made the first season so good in the pursuit of milking the cash cow fast.
Season 3 has one slightly redeeming episode but when the rest consist of unoriginal, uninspiring, moralistic and plain boring fart " humour" it seems like a futile attempt to get this once epic show back on track again.
Car Masters: Rust to Riches (2018)
When I was 14
We cut the roof of my car 'cause it was summer and it seemed like a good idea. What we did not know is that the roof is load bearing, so of course the car started to sag as soon as we opened the doors, but we just jacked it up, welded all the doors shut and drove it for giggles.
That is pretty much the same type of "workmanship" you see here, and without Constance I could care less about the whole show.
The Card Counter (2021)
I actually liked it
I liked the pacing, and the characters though I feel there is a lot more that could have been done with the telling of their stories. You get the where, what and who but not the why, and are left with a lot of questions.
I liked the duality and layering in it. Take the casinos for example, fun, active, full of hopes and dreams but also shown as a depressing and lonely place to be more often than not.
It is not bad at all, but it could easily have been better.
House of the Dragon (2022)
The end of an era
They say you can never go back, and in this case it feels very true. This is not the world I fell in love with all those years ago.
Maybe it's the waiting, anticipating, hoping, fantasising, dreaming ... but I was expecting more from the start than just introductions, talk of politics and some random nipples. Maybe because it seems cheaper in many ways. That the sound is all over the place and the CGI often feel as fake as the high ratings. Or maybe it is as simple as hitching it all to the woke wagon. I honestly don't know ... I only know that the world I miss seem further away than ever before.
It is not really a bad show on it's own, I have seen worse, a lot worse. It is just so immensely boring compared to the hype and what it originated from. You have to watch 34 minutes of talk in the second episode before a sword is drawn, and even then the dispute is resolved with ... yes you guessed it, more talk.
It is miles away compared to it's predecessor that had a nice balance of everything, and became a real cash cow for it, but it is understandable. HBO is a company. It is not a fan service that does this out of the goodness of their heart. They do it to make a profit, and to do so they follow the trends they believe will ensure a return on the hundreds of millions already invested. And if you factor in that they already decided to give it a second season, which in turn means an additional loss if the milk turns sour, it is even easier to see why they made a black man in a blonde wig the richest in the land, and so many of the reviews in here seems fake and highly overrated.
It's just milking the success
Take the original, then remove all the unique and clever parts, and replace them with clichés and so exaggerated action scenes that it just becomes boring, and you get this.
The fact that the one trick pony Asia Kate Dillon is "acting" in it does not help either.
"Can't find a negative anywhere"
Well I can.
The lack of realism for a start. From completely dry new born calves to shooting a horse in the wrong place for a mercy kill, letting a student that hit a teacher so hard she almost died go scott free. Branding of workers at the ranch, killing workers, killing random molesters, set them on fire, bury them in the wilderness, and when the cops arrive they switch guns with the killer so he won't get in trouble... And it goes on and on and on.
It is just another overhyped, paid for review series that gets more and more exaggerated and unrealistic in every episode.
If you want abused animals, bad writing and overacting in a nice scenery, it got that, if you want mafia and realism, watch Gomorrah instead.
Another great show ruined
Season 1 and 2 are really good. Season 3 is not so good as it started to get stale, and season 4 is not good at all. Season 5 is the most boring season i have seen in any show, it is just talk, talk, talk with obscure pop culture and food references in almost every sentence, and season 6 is even worse.
Young Sheldon (2017)
Ok but flawed
If you watch it as a light comedy it is fine, but if you watch it and pay attention, it is rather flawed logically.
As an example, the acting lessons Sheldon got from Penny in Big Bang Theory, was because he did not know how to act. Well he does learn it here, and since have an an eidetic memory he should really remember it.
There are quite a few of those, and even more when it comes to his germaphobia, and the fact that all he said about his childhood in big bang is a lie, since none of it is happening here, but if you look past that, it is an ok first season.
I would rather
Have strobe lights glued to my eyeballs, and eat my toe nails for dinner every day while sitting naked on a car battery for the rest of my life than to watch a second more of this.
Technically a documentary, in reality one sided propaganda
While interviewing a former drug addict she asks him why he started, the man answers " truthfully, because they feel good ... out of boredom ... depression " and she replies "but you're a white man, the world is set up for you "
Irma Vep (2022)
I love French movies
But there is always an exception to the rule.
There are 61 replicas of the Eiffel tower around the world in various scales. If you visit one, even he best ones, you are still miles away from the original.
I have that exact feeling with this series.
There is none of the intelligent writing, intrigues, humour, style, the cavalier attitude or sensuality French movies are known for. It just feels like a bad copy of something else.
Gomorra: La serie (2014)
An absolute masterpiece
In the beginning you get interested in the characters and then start to like and cheer some of them on just as you do in any show with decent writing.
What makes Gomorra so special is that after a few episodes you stop cheering and start to think.
Then the doubt comes. And the feelings change.
Now you want the people you liked to suffer. To suffer and maybe even die.
And then it changes back ... again ... and again ... and again but when the ending comes you are left with the feeling of fulfilment, and everything is just as it should be.
It is superb in absolutely every way.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
To quote Cartman :
Screw you guys !
That is all I have to say, since everything I felt about this sorry excuse for a show already have been said so well by others that also hated the ending.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
I really hope it ends now
Great casting, solid actors with chemistry and a script about an idea that reality may not be what we believe, is some of the reasons the original movie is so good as it is.
It is also lack of the same that make this seem like a "made for tv" B movie.
It does not help that it explains it self during the play, like some badly written "who did it" show. That it tries to cater to all, and is as woke as almost anything else made these days.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
Of course it is good when you are paid to say so
I checked 50 random reviewers that gave it 10, and 46 of them only have one review. This one.
The rest is most likely blind. It is hard to imagine anyone else giving this garbage ten.
Game of Thrones (2011)
An absolute legend
I am about to watch it again again for the fifth time now, but I have learned my lesson. The heartaches I got from season 8 is not worth it, so I only watch 1-7 and then simply make up my own ending.
Just like they did, but a good one.
