How to Make a Monster (2001 TV Movie)
Entertaining
1 April 2003
Warning: Spoilers
small insignificant spoiler

This, by no means, seems to be intended to be a great movie, but it's fun to watch and fun to laugh at. It's not to be taken seriously, so what if the technical stuff is wrong, we are talking about a movie that gets a quick laugh from a woman jumping up and down naked...buy it for a cheap price and crack it out when you need a quick laugh, or a good Clea DuVall fill (that is, if you don't watch But I'm a Cheerleader, Wildflowers, the Faculty, or the Slaughter Rule first)

Genius
12 January 2003
An acquaintance of mine saw this movie and told me, with a negative connotation, "that movie was about a bunch of lesbians!" This was a while ago and I had forgotten about the movie but I picked up the box at the rental store the other day and decided to make my own judgments. This story was a stroke of genius! A cheerleader who thinks she is straight, talked into being a lesbian by a bunch of people trying to make her straight, well, they talked her into the realization that she was, in fact, homosexual, although, I don't think I'd enjoy kissing Megan's boyfriend either, I thought he'd drown her in his salava.

This movie was in the spirit of some John Waters' films I hold close to my heart. Mink Stole (Cry-Baby) must smell a great movie from a mile away. The casting was great. Cathy Moriarty was so funny as the spokesperson for the kind of "normalcy" preached in the 1950's. RuPaul was hilarious as the reformed closet homosexual, Julie Delpy (Before Sunrise) proves again to be the mysterious and beautiful European type character. Lastly, but most importantly, Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall. These two women, who are spectacular actors in themselves, had strong and intense chemistry. Their portrayals of Megan and Graham were up to perfection and I truly believed in their characters, in short, they just really got me.

This movie is perfect for anyone who wants to see two people, who were meant for each other, overcoming obstacles to be together. And their obstacles were hilarious. I almost died during the "sexual simulation"

"You know who you are and you know who you want. Aint nothin' gonna change that, s***!" Everyone should have a friend like Andre.

Original Sin (2001)
Terrible script-good acting
19 December 2002
Warning: Spoilers
*contains a spoiler*

I guess MGM overestimated the movie-goers desire for this type of love story. It is made very clear that this, in no way, was a love story, but a story about love. It seems that the main point of the movie was to show how love gets into your every pore, where it makes a person incapable of being outside the intoxication of their complement. Although this idea is both romantic and great in theory, seeing it on screen was a bit sickening. Even the summary on the back of the dvd made me feel uncomfortable and nauseated. Angelina Jolie does an excellent job with this monstrosity. She delivered my favorite line in the movie *SPOILER* Jolie: He needs a doctor! cop: what about him? ::bang:: Jolie: he's dead, now get him a doctor!

Thinking about successful movies, Original Sin should have been great because it included, plot twists, sex, beautiful women, beautiful men, great acting, and love. Somehow, I think is was just too over-the-top. I guess the "mail order bride" idea should have been abandoned after Nicole Kidman's "Birthday Girl" --with Original Sin, I felt the same twinge of hatred as I did for Birthday Girl. But movies that are so terrible at first glance permeate throughout my body being the only thought in my mind, until I have to watch again and again, forcing movies I hate to transform into some of my most treasured pieces of entertainment. I love Birthday Girl and I'm sure I will love Original Sin.

For those who I have completely confused, just watch the movie. Even if you don't like it you should be able to say at least you tried. Plus, Angelina Jolie is brilliant (even though she got the razzie award for worst actress-don't ask me where that came from-whoever nominated her needs to take a good look at the brilliance it takes to turn a terrible script and terrible characters into tangible people.) Just watch it and find out for yourself.

Skipped Parts (2000)
Redefining the Family-Skipped Parts a Must See!
15 December 2002
Jennifer Jason Leigh knows her stuff. After picking up Skipped Parts off the shelf, my choice based solely on the interest in Jennifer Jason Leigh movies, I was not disappointed by Skipped Parts. A coming of age story of the American family. You can call it dysfunctional but through all of the problems and obstacles this family saw, it seemed to have more love and happiness than the stereotypical suburban, white picket fence family we are so used to seeing in every movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh is spectacular, yet again, and anyone who loves off-beat movies with a heartwarming feeling from a different direction (compared to other movies) this is a must see and ace on my list. Watch it twice then buy it (as I will do shortly)

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
10/10
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
9 January 2002
I picked up Moulin Rouge at the rental store thinking "What the heck? At least I can say I saw it," thinking it wouldn't be that good. Boy was I wrong! I should have known I would fall hopelessly in love with the movie. Baz Luhrman(director, most well known for his direction of Romeo and Juliet) is a genius seeing scenes and putting them together in a way that no one else would have done. The editing is fantastic and really brings out so much emotion whether it is happy, sad, or hilarious. I have never really seen many Nicole Kidman films but this has given me a whole new respect for her and I am a fan for life. She is a remarkably talented actress from every word to every blink. Her facial expressions can stir emotions inside you that you never knew were there. You could always tell what she was feeling and she made it very apparent when she was Satine the actress and Satine the woman in love. I was so surprised to hear how wonderfully she sings and never thought I would have a "Nicole Kidman CD" I can't say enough good things about her performance. I have seen a few films starring Ewan McGregor and loved every one of them, this one tops the cake. As the naive man in love with a woman everyone wants, he is so wonderful and his voice makes him that much more. (if I say anything else great about his performance I will spoil the movie) Kidman and McGregor have fantastic on-screen chemistry causing that wonderful warm fuzzy feeling ("it's a little bit funny this feeling inside") whenever they are together in the scenes. This is a picture you never want to end but it does and all you can do is rewind and watch it over and over again. Any film that does a music mix of "Lady Marmalade" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" gets a 10+ in my book. This isn't a movie for everyone, but for those of you who love great music, true love, and an all around craziness complete with a new cover of "Like a Virgin" you will be happily surprised with the masterpiece of Moulin Rouge! which in my opinion will be a classic that people will be enjoying for a million years to come. "It's spectacular spectacular, no word from your vernacular... So exc-i-ting the audience will stop and cheer, so de-light-ing it will run for 50 years!"
