Very Small Business (2008)
very small business, very big humour
Amongst all the terrible reality and lackluster drama shows of Australian television came a little gem called 'Very Small Business'. This should come as no surprise as Australia knows how to do comedy,(some other countries may not get it sometimes), but this show is strong evidence.
Don Angel likes to think he has the gift of the gab, the only problem is he can't sell ice to Eskimos and his business has so many loose ends that the loose ends have loose ends. This makes for one entertaining character who makes you constantly cringe as he digs himself deeper and deeper into a hole every episode.
Ray Leonard on the other hand is the polar opposite of Don (his Boss) as they share an office space that is home to some very funny scenes. Cleverly written, superbly acted and well filmed there has only been one series of this show filmed. Even though i thoroughly enjoyed the six episodes i saw and would be happy to leave it there, i can't help but itch for more.
Lost on Shrooms
You know those films where as hard as you try to watch it, you find your mind drifting away, because it has no brain glue? That was Shrooms for me. Another pack of American teenage friends(who don't really act like friends, yet they are traveling to another country together to try hallucinogenic mushrooms) set off to Ireland in search of Shrooms. They are led by their Irish(laughs at the accent)guide into the woods, where they will camp, fight, take Shrooms, fight, be haunted by inbred locals and a ghost, fight and...well you've probably seen it all before. Nicely shot, special effects are good, acting is fine, however the script follows the some old run of the mill stupid teenagers in over their heads horror story. If thats your cup of tea, put the kettle on. Oh and one of the girls in the group takes a funky mushroom which allows her to have premonitions. I only wish she could have warned me.
Trailer Park of Terror (2008)
Small budget, big heart
Now i do realize this film does follow the same old slasher flick premise where a group of teenagers(including the cliché characters e.g. the cool chick, horny boys and a goth)are pitted against all odds to survive the sadistic events of a situation they don't understand. But this film knows it and has fun it with. I could explain the plot but you've heard it all before, what i can tell you is the cinematography is excellent, the make up is fantastic, the special effects are well done and the acting is solid. I forgot to mention the script, it doesn't take itself seriously, good. Thats the point of the film, have a good time and watch some blood fly. You don't need a big budget to make an entertaining film. Just a big heart.
Dying Breed (2008)
Australia is a beautiful country, the people and the land, however it has a dark history and 'Dying breed' is a small piece of that nostalgic pie. Two couples head into the Tasmanian wilderness in search of the extinct Tasmanian tiger and soon find themselves in unforgiving country populated by unforgiving locals. The direction and acting is steady with no real stand out performance and the characters seem a bit flat at times but the shots of Tasmania's isolated country side are fantastic and set a haunting tale. This formula has been applied countless times so there's nothing new here but its done well serving up some good blood and guts and proves along with Wolf creek that Aussie film can do horror. If your Austalian make it tradition to go see Australian films!
